March 30, 1893 issue of Scott Co. Chronicle - Mrs. Julia A. Christie died at the residence of her son, John Christie,near Wesley Chapel, Jenning Twp. Tuesday morning of last week, aged 92 yrs., 6 mos. & 10 days. Her remainswere interred Tuesday afternoon at the Wesley Chapel Cemetery.

Juliana is a ancestor of Sue Henry (Mrs. Donald) from Scott County, Indiana. I think I have a letter from her or anaddress in another letter.

The above is my great grandfather, Andrew Christie and H.E. is my grandfather.

I have copies of Andrew Christie military records from 1883 to 1910. It's his papers trying to get a pension from theArmy. He was a private of company K 39th Regiment Indiana 8th Cavalry Volunteers, and was enrolled on the 18thday of September, 1861 at Indianapolis, Ind. for 3 yrs. and is expected: on rolls to Aug. 31/62 Present. Sept. &Oct/62. Absent. Paroled prisoner. Captured at Lawrenceburg. Subsequent rolls to Feb. 2 of 63. same report rollsto Oct 31/63. Present. Returned ?? - 11/63. Nov. & Dec./63. Absent. Detached service since Dec. 2/63.Subsequent rolls to June 30/65. Present. He re-enlisted as Vet. Vol. Feb. 28, 1864. He was mustered out withCompany, July 20, 1865. Company rolls and Regt.. Returns furnish no evidence of company in actionLawrenceburg Ky. October 9, 1862. Company at Durham Station, N.C. April 20/65. The name Andrew Christie isnot borne upon Co. Rolls. No evidence of Service in company K 8th Ind. Cav. (30th Inf.) Vols. prior to Sept. 1861.

Family Group Sheet Prisoner of War Records show him captured near Lawrenceburg, Ky. Oct. 8 or 9, 562 by Gen. E. Kirby Smith withthe remark since paroled. No further information on said records. Name does not appear on Regimental Hospital records on file.No evidence of alleged disability or injury. Signed by ?? Assistant Adjutant General. Next is a paper saying Andrew Christie was disabled and his physician was now dead. He was 45 years old at thetime and had rheumatism.

There was a story about Andrew Christie having two horses shot out from under him during the Civil War. Thisseems to be the true story in an affidavit given by James D. Thompson, Lieut., 60 K, 39th Ind Calvary. There is alsoa story about Andrew Christie being on the march to the sea with General Sherman and Sherman cut up the flag andgave each troop a piece of it. There's a picture of the piece of flag in Andrew's scrapbook.

"I was a member of the same Company and Reg. with applicant (meaning Andrew Christie) and knew him well that Iwas present at a place called Durham Station in the State of North Carolina on or about April, 1865 that said soldierwas riding his horse and in line of duty when his horse stumbled and fell on said soldier so disabling him (saidsoldier) that he was unfit for duty from said injury. His injuries were internal said soldier complained of his backand abdomen said injury cause rupture."

Another affidavit by John D. Sanders about his disability after the war and how he was very ill and disabled.

Declaration for an Original Invalid Pension - March 18, 1881. (The poor guy still didn't have his pension it soundslike.)State of Indiana, County of Scott. On this 18 day of march, 1881 personally appeared before me Clerk of the Circuit Court of Record within and forthe county and State aforesaid, Andrew Christie, aged 43 years, who being duly sworn according to law, declaresthat he is the identical Andrew Christie who was ENROLLED on the 176th day of September, 1861, in Company Rof the 39th regiment of Ind. Inf. Vols. commanded by Capt. Chas. A. Gordon and was honorable DISCHARGED atIndianapolis, Ind. on the 28th day of February 1864; that his personal description is as follows: Age 43 years, height5 feet, 8 1/2 inches; complexion dark, hair, dark, eyes, dark. That while a member of the organization aforesaid, inthe service and in the line of his duty at Durham Station in the State of North Carolina on or about the 26th day ofApril,, 1865 he contracted Rheumatism, caused by exposure, also, about Hate same time while in the line of duty atDurham Station he was disabled, by the falling of a horse upon which he was riding, injuring his hips and back.

that he was treated in hospitals as follows: Was treat at Lexington, N.C. by Dr. M. Connett. except in ?? monthslicense previous to this enlistment above ??. That he has not been employed in the military or naval serviceotherwise than as stated above Co. "R". 8th Reg't. Ind. Cavalry. Said I can't read it.

He has reside in the town of Austin, Indiana and his occupation is a farmer. Prior to his entry into the service he wasa farmer. That he is now partially disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reason of his injuries,.He has not receive a pension. signed by Andrew Christie and an attorney.

Affidavit by doctor who treated him for irritation of bowels at various times - March 6, 1893.

Affidavit by Robert J. Gillspy who served with Andrew Christie from 1861 to 1863. Mentioned they were inBridgeport, Alabama. March 20, 1893.

Affidavit by P. A. Kendall, M.D. on March 22, 1897."That I have known the claimant for 15 years or more and see him quite frequently. On examination find followingpulse 68 Temp 97 3/5 Resp 35. Tongue flabby, fisssund brown cont. indicating torpid liver. Heart . Rheumaticcondition. Mitral regurgitation, Cardiac dysynosa, Epigastic pulsation, Arterio catheromative Lumbago andTonsillitis very severe. Loss of movement in elbow, shoulder, hip and knee joints. Showing extension of rheumaticcondition to these points. Liver enlarged and tender. Tenderness over eipgastric ?? over both eyes especially theleft. Rheumatic Istics. Bowels constipated alternating with diarrhea. Pain back of neck ?? out. Vertigo, Blindnesson assuming upright position. Biles and rectal cata?? umbilical hemorrhoids. Extension of Rheumatism and Diseaseof Rectum and Piles resulting in disease of liver and stomach have almost totally disabled the claimant. Thisaffidavit is in my own hand writing and I certify that in its preparation I was not aided or prompted by any written or

Sir:

I am claimant above named and my said claim was rejected march 19, 1903 on the ground that $17 per month isfully commensurate with degree of disability from pensioned causes ?? Injury of head and hips and resultinglumbago and chronic diarrhea and resulting disease of rectum and liver. I claim that I am now totally incapacitatedfor performance of manual skillful or mechanical labor and justly entitled under the law to $30 per month and Iherewith respectfully request a rehearing and a reexamination in accordance with Rule 13 Rules and RegulationsPension office. and ask that I be ordered before a board o of Examining Surgeons to whom special instructions maybe given to the end that justice may be done me under the law and that I be placed upon an equality with otherpensioners pensioned fro same or equivalent disabilities. That I have this day carefully examined the above named and I find him suffering with chronic diarrhea & disease ofrectum, very bad case of piles both external & internal, he also has rheumatism of muscles of back & shoulders &heck, has dissense of left Lung, and an umbilical rupture, also has heart disease resulting from rheumatism, from allof his disabilities the applicant is certainly totally disabled from manual labor.

Upon his death he was paid $24.

June 28, 1891 issue of Scott Co. Chronicle - Andy Christie, of Jennings Twp. who had a stroke of paralysis, a shorttime ago was reported better Tuesday.

Feb., 1884 - Andrew Christie of Jennings Twp. has been granted a pension of four dollars per month with arrearagesamounting to $188.00.

May 19, 1910 issue of Chronicle - Andrew Christie, died at ten o'clock Tuesday nite at the home of his son, Elvin, 4miles east of Austin, from a complication of diseases. His remains were interred Tuesday afternoon at the WesleyChapel Cemetery. He leaves several children and other relatives to mourn his death. The deceased was a veteran ofthe Civil War. He was 72 yrs. of age and had made his home n Jennings Twp., this county, the greater portion of hislife.
