Some may think of the winter season as a slow period. Not so at the Sedona Golf Resort Community Association. The community swells with part time owner residents returning to enjoy the milder climate Sedona experiences versus Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Canada and more. With more than 40% of SGR property owners listing an alternate billing address, old acquaintances are renewed and new ones made. Many came back in time to attend the SGR Annual SGRCA Social Mixer which enjoyed a 48% increase in attendance over last year. Everyone enjoyed themselves with networking, a full buffet and live entertainment. From a landscape perspective within SGR what we see this year is drastically different than years past. Phase 1 of the comprehensive landscape plan is complete. Phase 2 & 3 are well underway. The rock walls have been built. Irrigation is in the ground. Planting holes are prepped. And the stone and boulders have been installed. All that remains is to complete the seating benches and install the trees, shrubs, and groundcover. With more than 700 plants, 100 red rock boulders, and many tons of crushed red rock, our community landscaping has been revitalized for all. From a financial perspective all of the landscaping is funded and both our operating budget and reserve funds are healthy. There is no change in property owner dues. We've even gotten some pleasant surprises for 2014. Due to aggressive competitive bidding some of our biggest recurring expenditures are going down. Our second largest contract, Trash Collection, was reopened and we negotiated a 13% reduction. We let out bids for the 2014 common wall painting and bids were up to 35% below reserve allocation. This is a result of the highly competitive bidding process overseen by our Hoamco Community Manager Paul Frieder and the volunteer paint committee. Great job by all. A final financial note, this community newsletter is now 100% paid for by community advertisers. Spring will bring the annual SGR meeting and election of directors. Look for more info on the meeting within the newsletter and mail notifications. In conclusion, the winter season has brought all the community's residents together again. ARCHITECTURE TIP:

1. Paint your home every 5-10 years to help prevent water intrusion and subsequent damage from freezing and cracking.

2. Painting satellite TV dishes will not interfere with signal reception.

3. Consider replacing outside dusk to dawn lighting with energy efficient LED bulbs which last up to 17 years.

It was a busy year in 2013 for the Architectural Committee (AC) volunteers. The AC reviewed new home construction, solar electric panels, landscaping, painting, driveway replacements, swimming pools, water fountains, and much more. There were more than 70 applications. While many were easily approved, several required extended communication to ensure what the homeowner envisioned and desired could ultimately be built by their contractor or themselves and fit it within the community guidelines. All 70+ applications were approved with the exception of two. As we look forward to 2014 we expect several more homes to be constructed. Preliminary inquiries on building new homes have been received on 2 vacant lots recently purchased. The common wall painting will begin sometime in March or April depending upon the weather. It's been 8 years since the prior painting. Phase 1 wall painting will be approximately 50% of the association walls and includes lower Crown Ridge, Bent Tree, Heritage, Kaibab and Ridge Rock Roads. The walls on the remaining streets are in much better shape and are Phase 2 which will be done in either 2015 or 2016 the 8 year interval as well. Over the next few months be sure to prune and clear any plants growing over the walls and impeding the wall painting which will include painting the top/cap of the walls. You are encouraged to contact the painting firm and take advantage of the great pricing they are offering to do the walls inside your lot. Many homeowners took advantage of this during the last wall painting cycle and were very happy with the uniform look as well as competitive price. Contact information will be provided by Hoamco in an email once we're closer to start date. In closing, the AC thanks everyone for their diligence in submitting applications and patience awaiting a response. In most cases the applications are turned around in 2 weeks or less. Remember a simple 1 page submittal form can keep harmony with your neighbors and the entire community while saving you time and money learning from the AC's experience.

ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE NEWS contr ibuted by Gayle Burns

LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE NEWS contr ibuted by Barbara Otter

What's with the stakes and pink ribbons all along our common ground roadways? Yavapai County Public Works Department has surveyed the areas where our landscape improvement installations must comply with road safety standards. Yes, as you may have noticed Phases 2 and 3 are well underway. The rocks and rock dressing are essentially done and the holes for the plants are ready. The native evergreen trees will be installed this month per grower recommendation. Other trees and plants will go in with warmer weather. The committee and the Board are re-addressing the material used for the 5 rock seating areas located on Diamond Sky, Upper and Lower Crown Ridge and Heritage Circle so they are more accommodative for seating. Stay Tuned! The regular landscape maintenance proceeds with dormant tree trimming and scheduled overgrowth removal. Line cutting of weeds and dead-heading of wildflowers will begin next month. Normal irrigation will resume in March. Our community needs your help addressing the ongoing problem of dog walkers who are not "policing" their dog's "business." Any stroll along our newly beautified roadways presents numerous unsightly and unhealthy piles of dog poop. Some of us were surprised that the change to a groomed landscape didn't inspire those dog lovers to respect the common good. Bad habits and bad manners don't have to prevail. Anything from E. coli to tapeworms can be present in the waste. Any suggestions for a solution...? The committee has several projects in mind for 2014 and continues to look for opportunities to enhance the beauty and safety of our community. We welcome your feedback and suggestions. We won't deny "the squeaky wheel often gets the grease," but our overarching guides are the consensus of the community and the Budget. So, we won't promise what we can't deliver, but we will give every suggestion due consideration. Thanks for your support.

White Tail Block Party Three new owners on White Tail Drive hosted a block party September 21 to welcome their new neighbors. Beverages were provided by George and Debbie Frahm at 235 White Tail. An appetizer table was provided by Doug and Pam Ayres at 220 White Tail. Followed by desserts at Lance and Rosemary Mays at 230 White Tail. Approximately 55 people attended. It was a thoughtful and fun gathering. Welcome to the neighborhood new neighbors and welcome to Sedona Golf Resort!

9th Annual Bighorn Court Potluck Block Party

Visiting, eating and meeting new people – that is what the East and West Big Horn Court and Stone Creek block party was all about. Mary Dove and Paula Potter did a wonderful job coordinating this annual event, which was held on Sunday evening, October 6th, 2013. Everyone brought a dish to share and a beverage of choice to this fun event. The party has been held in the East Big Horn Court cul-de-sac for nine years thanks to the initial efforts of Mara Stephens, Joanne Barron and Janis Hoeschele but will begin to move next year with Stone Creek hosting and then West Big Horn Court will do the honors in fall of 2015. A fun time was had by all!

Sedona Trails — Continued from page 1 The following websites provide excellent overviews of local hikes: www.trailpeak.com (search AZ, Sedona) and www.greatsedonahikes.com. If you are interested in hiking with a group you should contact the Sedona Westerners Hiking group. The exclusive purpose of the Sedona Westerners is to offer its members hiking opportunities, monthly meetings, and social events — in order to facilitate among them the development of closer and friendlier personal acquaintance. (www.sedonawesterners.org). Remember when you hike to choose the hike that is best suited to your fitness level, interest and seasonal appropriateness, carry plenty of water, bring a snack for fuel, protect yourself from the sun, and follow trail etiquette — stay on the trails. Study the trail guide before you head out. Bring a map so you can keep track of where you are going. Keep landmarks in sight. Bring a fully charged cell phone and a first-aid kit. Most importantly, be sure to tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return. Should you get lost or run into trouble, this will speed rescue efforts.

Pam and Doug Ayres were married in Sedona at Church of the Red Rocks in 1985 and lived in the Village part time since 1986 and full time since 1993. Doug completed his life career in local and international government by teaching Public Administration for 15 years at the University of Southern California, and owning three successful businesses. After Pam was elected to public office in 1972, she enjoyed 20 years employment in California local government jurisdictions and owning her own election administration business for 10 years. Putting all that behind them to retire and enjoy Sedona also found them cruising the oceans and waterways of North America for 15 years on their 54 foot power boat. Scaling back to enjoy international travel, they recently relocated to White Tail Drive in the Sedona Golf Resort Community Association where they plan to stay a very long time. Please welcome Pam and Doug to our community.
