Happy Birthday Big Bird!Big Bird celebrates his birthday on March 20theach year. However, theres some debate as tohow old he really is! Although he was 4 yearsold when be first appeared in 1969, whenhe celebrated his birthday in the star-studded 1991 film Let Me Eat Cake, hewas celebrating his 6th birthday!
Some interesting facts: Big Bird has beenperformed by Caroll Spinney since 1969, with very fewexceptions. He lives in a large nest behind the 123 SesamStreet brownstone and has a teddy bear named Radar, whicis a nod to Walter "Radar" O'Reilly of M*A*S*H, who had teddy bear and was also lovably naive and innocent. Radawas given to Big Bird by Gary Burghoff (who played Radar oM*A*S*H) when he guest starred on the show. Big Bird alshas a private jet called "The Bigger Bird."

Meet & Greet The Troops
Family eGuide 20090320 6 In This Iss
Meet and Greet the TroopsDFW Airport, Terminal D, Gate 22
Daily - Usually between 7:00 - 9:00am (Call to Confirm)
(972) 574-0392 or www.ntc-dfw.org
Anywhere from 150 to 250 troops come through DFWairport each day on their way home for a two-week R&R
(Rest and Recuperation). One flight arrivesdaily at DFW and one departs each day. Asmall portion meets their families herebut the majority will catch connectingflights home. Volunteers gather eachday to welcome these troops off their
flight, thanking and encouraging them fortheir service to our great nation.
There are many faithful individuals whocome almost every day and deem it a
privilege to be there; yet still, many more are needed tomake this program even better.
All are welcome to come and participate in the R&RProgram. To learn of expected flight arrivals, call (972)574-0392 for a recorded message. You may call after 8:30pm the evening before, or up until the flight arrives the next
morning. Though most flights are expected to arrivebetween 7:00 am and 9:00 am, the key is to be flexible asthis does change, sometimes even at the last minute. Youwill want to check the recording several times in themorning before coming to the airport.
The troops arrive at Terminal D, Gate 22. You may park inthe lot located on the ground level. You will walk across to
greet the troops in the ArrivalHall. Parking passes will beissued as you arrive so there is
no parking fee or charge toyour toll tag (toll tags must betaken down before enteringthe airport, since we areunable to reimburse toll tags).
For additional needed help, you may call Donna Cranston, the on-si te coordinator at (972) 948-7059 [email protected].
Thank You For Supporting Our Troops!
Do you know of a groupinterested in this activity? If you have a group of 15 or more--business, club, civic organization orchamber and need further information, please e-mail [email protected] orcall Christene Wheeler. Your group canadopt a day, week or more!
Tips:
Signs: Homemade signs are welcome! Youcan even leave them, and the onsitecoordinator will see that theyre displayed!
Food: Welcome treats are permissible(phone cards and gum are great!). Simple is
best. NO home baked items are allowed -only prepackaged items!
Water: Bottled water is a big hit! You dontneed to bring ice or coolers. Bring yourwater and give it to the onsite coordinatorand she will ice it down for the following day.
Clothes: Wear patriotic colors!
Flags: There are some flags availableonsite, but please return them for later use(or bring some flags with you).
Line-up: Families of troops and Veteransline up in front of the greeting area. All othervolunteers will go behind them.
Cell Phones: Youre welcome to offertroops the use of your cell phone to callhome as they arrive. The best place to dothis is outside, as they wait for their buses.
Scheduling: You should plan 2 hours out ofyour day (driving, parking, greeting & return)- a small price compared with those of oursoldiers.

Taking Care of the Earth as a Family
(or FOR your family):Disposing of Compact Fluorescent Bulbs
Weve all heard about usingcompact fluorescent bulbs (CFL
bulbs). They use up to 75
percent less energy (electricity)
than incandescent light bulbs,
last up to 10 times longer, cost
little up front, and provide a quick
return on investment. They also
reduce greenhouse gas emissions
that lead to global climate change.
But they also contain mercury, a
harmful element in our environment.
So how do you dispose of these bulbs?Take your bulbs to any local Home Depot o
IKEA store. Theyll accept your old CFL bulb
and recycle them.
