Happy New Year to all!

What a wonderful thing—to be able to say Happy New Year, and for you to be able to receive my best wishes for this New Year. As we proclaim our wishes to family, friends, and even strangers, we have already acknowledged that this will be a happy new year, so lets embrace it with the blessings of just that— A Happy New Year!

The community of early childhood professionals (providers, programs, agencies, associations, etc.) in our county has worked hard and made wonderful strives to improve the quality of child care and education received by the many children and families served. I am proud to be a part of those community partners and to witness first hand the passion and commitment that compliments these “intentional professionals.”

You should acknowledge your past year’s accomplishments. I personally thank you for your commitment to our youngest and most deserving citizens—our children. From this point on, we should all look for new opportunities that will allow early childhood professionals in our county to move to the next level of quality that will enhance the services we provide to children and families of Hillsborough County.

As we move forward in 2012, continue to follow best practices in whatever you do and don’t forget to follow-up, follow through, and be thorough.

PROFESSIONALISM

Frank Tyger was a nationally published cartoonist, editor, and writer. He was quoted saying, “Professionalism is knowing how to do it, when to do it, and doing it.” Tyger also believed that when you like your work every day is a holiday. Thus, Tyger remained employed by the Trenton Times (New Jersey’s newspaper) from the 1960’s through the 1990’s.

What does it mean to be a professional? The Webster dictionary defines professional as being characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethical standards of a profession. In other words, in every field or profession, there are basic moral standards that the employed individuals are expected to embrace and adhere to. In so doing, they are building their professional identities.

A true professional learns early on that success comes from complete dedication and a right attitude towards their field of choice. This dedication, much like faith, must be firm and sincere. Therefore, an individual must be willing to continuously learn about their field in order to remain professional.

As in the childcare field, providers must be knowledgeable of the skills and resources needed to remain professional. For example, childcare providers must be willing to attend training sessions, conferences, and support group meetings in order to be cognizant of changes in the field. This is especially true for individuals who are new to the childcare profession. It is also helpful to collaborate with other professionals in the field to help promote respect, loyalty, teamwork, discipline, integrity, and trust. Even as professionals, it is impossible for us to know it all. It is also important for childcare professionals to be mentored by another trusted professional in the field. If these individuals talk at least once a week, new ideas can be explored and shared.

There are also a number of benefits to professionalism. For instance, the chance to know you make a difference in the world and feeling good about yourself. Professionals also have the ability to stay in their chosen professions. This is because of the support systems and continuing education available to them. Professionals also gain respect from their community and society and have a better public image. Moreover, professionalism can lead to quality clients and job security.

Lastly, a provider should first take care of themselves, manage their anger, and rediscover the joy of being a provider. They should be licensed and accredited, be creative when caring for children, network with other child care providers, promote their program, and show professional growth. They should always be planning, partnering, and balancing.

Curriculum for Early Childhood Programs

A curriculum serves as blueprint for planning and implementing a quality program that addresses the global development of each individual child enrolled in the program (Diane Twister Dodge, 2004).

Quality early learning environments are essential for preparing children to be successful learners as they leave your program and move forward through elementary school programs. Curriculum plays an important role in helping children become lifelong learners. One characteristic of a high quality program is the existence of an all inclusive curriculum that reflect the programs philosophy, goals and objectives for each child and focus on areas such as physical, cognitive, social-emotional and language skills.

Early childhood programs should have a curriculum for each age group served in their program. Most Family Child Care Homes (FCCH) providers use the “Creative Curriculum for Family Child Care.” One reason may be because a FCCH serves different age groups and this is one curriculum that includes a variety of age groups.

An age appropriate curriculum aid with strategies and ideas for assessing children’s proper development. Without a curriculum in place, the program may lack the appropriate tools for providing each child the proper knowledge, skills and opportunities to learn to their full potential.

The curriculum provides the framework for how and what to use during learning and interacting among the children and their peers, and adults. Because curriculum is developed through much research and studies, it offers more advantages over do-it-yourself methods.

When selecting curricula for your program do your research and before you decide, make sure that the material you choose is an approved one and will be appropriate for the children (each individual child) enrolled in your program.

*DID YOU KNOW?* Did you know that bulletin boards are a great teaching tool?

They can be used for a variety of things; the most important teacher-parent communication. Post your daily schedules, menus, important tips, reminders, and events for parents. This keeps parents up to date and always informed.

Bulletin boards are also a great way to decorate your classroom and teach children about the seasons, holidays, monthly topics, valuable lessons, and history. Most children already know the basic holidays (Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc.) This gives you the opportunity to teach the children about other important holidays like, Martin Luther King JR day, Earth day, Saint Patrick’s Day, Presidents day, Groundhogs day, and much more.

They can be very inexpensive, all you need is a blank wall and a border. The border can be made-up of children’s art work, construction paper, or paper borders from the store. No need to buy fancy decorations, just decorate with topic related artwork made by the children and voilá! A beautiful handcrafted board made with lots of love.

Some helpful bulletin board ideas:

February - Black History Month

Border- Multi-cultural construction paper hand print cut-outs

Topics- African American inventors or heroes

Artwork- Multi-cultural collage with magazine cut-outs or Unity Wreath using multi-color hand prints cut-outs

March - National Nutrition Month

Border– Fruit cut-outs colored by the children

Topics– Eating healthy or different types of fruits and vegetables

Artwork– Fruit and vegetable cut-outs colored by the children then glued on paper plates. Print out some helpful tips for eating right and staying healthy

April - Earth Day

Border- Green or blue construction paper

Topic- Recycling, Planting trees, or keeping the earth clean

Artwork- Coffee filter earth- Color coffee filter with blue and green marker, spray with water bottle and let it dry or

pictures of the children planting trees or flowers.

About the CDA

The Child Development Associate® (CDA) is the most widely recognized credential in early childhood education (ECE) and is a key

stepping stone on the path of career advancement in ECE.

The CDA credential is based on a core set of competency standards, which guide early care professionals as they work toward

becoming qualified teachers of young children. The Council works to ensure that the nationally-transferable CDA is a credible and

valid credential, recognized by the profession as a vital part of professional development.

CDAs have knowledge of how to put the CDA Competency Standards into practice and understanding of why those standards help

children move with success from one developmental stage to another. Put simply, CDAs know how to nurture the emotional,

physical, intellectual, and social development of children.

Earning the CDA Credential has many advantages, including exposure to the larger community of early childhood educators. Over

275,000 educators have received their CDA to date!

Becoming a CDA is a big commitment, but one that creates confident practitioners with command of today’s best practices for

teaching young children.

Benefits of a CDA

• Advance your career

• Meet job requirements

• Reinforce your commitment to early childhood education

• Provide parents with peace of mind

• Understand developmentally appropriate practice

• Increase your confidence
