C.A. Johnson Class of 1968 C.A. Johnson Class of 1968

I’m at rest now, so don’t cry;

It’ll get easier as time goes by.

I’ve done my best to live a good life,

For I knew, if I did, I would be with

God and have no more strife.

As my body lies there, it’s only a shell.

God has called me home, and my job I’ve done well.

Now I’m happy and very content,

For the things I’ve done wrong, I repent.

As I see your faces, that makes me sad,

But I have made it, and for that I am glad!

You know and I know that it’s hard on earth —

So you shouldn’t cry at death, but a birth.

I have no worries, pain or fears,

Because I’m with God, so dry your tears,

I love you all, and this is what I want you to do:

Put God first in your life,

And I’ll be seeing you.

The Walker Family would like to thank each of you for the many prayers and

loving acts of kindness rendered during the illness and passing of our loved one.

May God bless each of you with His grace and mercy.

Mr. Johnny L. Walker, affectionately

known as “Tex”, was born August 27,

1948 in Orangeburg County, South

Carolina. He was the seventh of eight

children of the late Woodrow and

Josephine Golson Walker. He passed

away on September 24, 2017 at

Providence Hospital.

He was married to the love of his life,

Daisy McCoy, for 38 years.

Johnny was a proud 1968 graduate of C.A. Johnson High School in Richland District

One. Always a standout athlete, Johnny lettered in football and basketball. During his

athletic career, he served as co-captain of the C.A Johnson’s Hornet football team and

captain of the basketball team. His talent and athletic abilities were recognized and

rewarded at the culmination of his high school years. Accolades he received to

hallmark his talents included both football and basketball scholarship offers to attend

Savannah State University, Tennessee State University, and South Carolina State

University. He ultimately accepted a scholarship offer to attend Savannah State

University. His devotion was perpetual to the Hornets and C. A. Johnson as he actively

supported his beloved class and worked diligently to assist them in fundraising efforts.

Johnny possessed outstanding people skills, and his desire to assist and serve nurtured

his desire in choosing a career path to compliment his talents. He successfully

completed training at the Charlotte Diesel School of Trucking, and enjoyed a career

that took him throughout the lower 48 states, Canada, and Mexico for over thirty years.

Johnny was a member of the South Carolina and the National Trucking Associations.

He was proud of his perfect driving record. Because of this track record, he earned

numerous awards and bonuses for safe driving.

Mr. Walker accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior and joined the Ebenezer Baptist

Church of Orangeburg County where he was baptized. He later moved his membership

to Chappelle Memorial A.M.E. Church and served as a member and chaplain of the

Gospel Choir, Usher Board, and the Adult Church School Class Two. He cheerfully and

persistently worked wherever he was needed at Chappelle Memorial. Johnny practiced

his belief that no job was too minimal or belittling when working in the vineyard of the

Shepherd. This was evident by his willingness to park cars during St. Patrick’s Day

activities, the constant encouragement of his nephews and nieces to be successful,

assisting senior church members when needed, giving sports pointers to young

athletes, as well as serving meals during Thanksgiving and Vacation Bible School. In

2014, Johnny was selected as the Chappelle Memorial A.M.E. Church Man of the Year.

Johnny’s favorite scripture was Philippians 4:13 (NKJV): “I can do all things through

Christ who strengthens me.”

In addition to his parents, Johnny was predeceased by five sisters: Emma Walker Bell,

Julia Walker Billie, Louise “Leila” Walker Epps, Marjorie “Mutt” Walker and JoAnn

Walker, and two brothers, Phillip Golson and Woodrow Wilson Walker, Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife, Daisy McCoy Walker; his brother, Reverend Dr. James

E. Walker (Francie); his sister-in-law, Palenthia McCoy; his faithful dog, Major; and a

host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Please don’t say that I gave up,

just say that I gave in.

Don’t say I lost the battle,

for it was God’s war to lose or win.

Please don’t say how good I was,

but that I did my best.

Just say that I tried to do what was right,

to give the most I could, not do less.

Please don’t give me wings or halos,

that’s for God to do.

I want no more than I deserve, no extras, just my due.

Please don’t give flowers, or talk in hushed tones.

Don’t be concerned about me now,

I’m well with God; I’ve made it home.

Don’t talk about what could have been,

it’s over and it’s done.

Just see to all my family’s needs, the battle has been won.

When you draw a picture of me,

don’t draw me as a saint.

I’ve done some good, I’ve done some wrong,

so use all your paint —

the bright and light tones, some gray and some dark.

In fact, don’t put me down on canvas,

paint me in your heart.

Don’t just remember good times,

but remember all the times we had.

For life is full of many things,

some happy and some sad.

But if you must do something,

then I have one last request:

Miss me, then let me go,

and praise God for now my soul’s at rest.

I thank God for I’ve been blessed.

I thank God for all who loved me,

and I praise God, for it is He who loved me best.
