Advent/Christmas Tree of Love

Bring the parish Christmas tree in to the parish for the first Sunday of Advent but rather than decorating it with ornaments have large coloured gift tags naming gifts that are needed for a family in need…this is a project you might discuss with the St Vincent de Paul Society in your parish – they will know families who are in need.  After the gospel of the Mass introduce the idea of the tree and invite the parishioners to come forward after Mass or sometime during the coming week and take one of the gift tags from the tree. In doing this they undertake to provide the gift.   They are asked to buy the gift, wrap it and attach the gift tag to the gift and then on the third Sunday of Advent bring the gift to the church and place it under the tree – it might be nice to include this bringing of gifts as part of the offertory procession on the third Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday)  The organising group – or the Saint Vincent de Paul – then have two weeks to distribute the gifts to those who requested them/are in need.  A good way to live out the Christmas message of the giving of the greatest gift…the gift of love!

Advent for children  The Jesse Tree Invite children from the parish to gather to make and colour the symbols for the Jesse Tree which will help in our parish preparations for Christmas.  Each week  then you can  invite children  to come  forward at  the beginning of Mass  to hang the symbols on the tree  For list of symbols contact the Pastoral Development Office   The Advent Wreath Invite a parent and child to come forward at the opening of the Mass each week and the parent can lead the prayer for the lighting of the candle as the child lights the candle to mark the beginning of each of the 4 weeks of Advent.  Encourage families to make an Advent wreath for their homes and each Sunday as they gather for a family meal say the prayer and light the candle as a family   Advent Calendar Many  children  love  to  open  the window  on  their Advent  calendar  during  the  days leading up to Christmas – encourage families to buy religious calendars from Veritas or from Trócaire.    You might even choose to make them available to buy from your Church/Parish Office

Altar Servers  September is a good time to invite last May’s First Holy Communion children to consider becoming Altar Servers team in your parish.    Invite them at Sunday Mass and through the schools, hold your meeting for parents and invite the Parish Safeguarding officer to talk to them and begin the training.  It’s a good way to establish a pattern of new Altar Servers joining in September

Blessing of Expectant Parents  Welcoming a child, through birth or adoption, is an act of faith, as well as an act of love.  Why not offer a special blessing for parents expecting a child, whether through birth or adoption on two occasions during the year at one of your parish’s Sunday Eucharist celebration or have a special time set aside in the evening of the feast day chosen…  The Book of Blessings offers suggested texts for the occasions. (Priests usually have a copy – if not, contact the Pastoral Development Office)  For some parents the waiting time is often an anxious time, as well as for prospective grandparents and other family members. This is an opportunity for the wider parish community of faith to pray especially for these expectant parents and offer them their love and support in this time of waiting.  Suggested days or seasons to offer such a blessing would be: - March 25th – Feast of the Annunciation - November 21st – Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Season of Advent – our time of waiting  Make sure your invitation is extended to the wider community as blessings often draw people to the church who may not usually connect with the faith community on a regular basis.

Blessing of Mothers and Fathers on their ‘days’

During the year we are all aware of Mothers’ Day (4th Sunday of Lent) and Fathers’ Day (3rd Sunday of June) and many lament the commercialisation of these two special days.  These two days offer the Christian community opportunities to mark the role of mothers and fathers as the first teachers of the faith to their children.  The Book of Blessings offers special prayers for these two days that could be used as blessings for mothers and fathers at one of the Sunday Eucharistic celebrations.  You might invite mothers/fathers to come forward or to stand in the pews for the rite of blessing.  Again you might use this as an opportunity to connect with the wider Christian community – send special invitations the parents of children receiving the sacraments this year or post invitations in the local community inviting families to attend. Include a prayer of the faithful for Mothers and fathers on these days  You might consider offering a cup of tea as a social gathering after Mass this Sunday.  NB. a copy of the Book of Blessings is usually in each parish – if not contact the Pastoral Development Office for copies of texts.

Candlemas  Feast of the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple  The Blessing of candles takes place today – invite families to bring candles they will use for prayer in their homes during the coming year to bring them to the Church for the blessing today.  Today Simeon and Anna welcomed Jesus into the world at the Temple when his parents presented him to God – as was the tradition of the day.  Why not… invite parents, grandparents and pre‐school children to join together for Mass today with a special blessing for the children.  Then gather after Mass for tea/coffee and chat!

Catholic Schools Week  The Catholic Bishops ask us to join with them at the end of January each year for Catholic Schools Week when they ask us to link up with our local parish schools to celebrate and highlight the contribution of Catholic Schools in our local communities.  You can involve pupils, parents, staff, boards of management, trustees, past pupils and extended families in a parish celebration this week.    This is a great opportunity to bridge the gap between parish and school communities  For ideas, resources and publicity materials see www.catholicbishops.ie/education

Celebrating and welcoming those who were baptised into the Christian community during the year

 “The Christian community welcomes you with great joy”  These words are taken from the opening of the Rite of Baptism – and yet in many parishes the Christian community is not present to offer this welcome personally. The priest or perhaps members of the parish Baptism team (if your parish has one) often represent the community at the celebration.  You might consider a few options around how the Christian community might welcome this new member… 

- on the feast of the Baptism of the Lord in January – you might consider inviting to one of the Sunday Eucharist’s all the parents and children who celebrated baptism in the parish during the past year 

- host a special Prayer Service for the families who had children baptised during the year on a day during the year – resource available from Sr Karen in the Pastoral Development Office 

- at Christmas why not take in procession to the crib the names of all the babies who were baptised in the parish during the year and place in/near the crib for the Christmas season 

- ask each family to give a photograph of their child’s baptism for display in the church at one of the above times 

- create a tree of life in your parish church and after each baptism add the name or even a photograph of the child who is welcomed into the community 

 The Book of Blessings offers texts for these occasions – the clergy will have a copy or you may contact the Pastoral Development Office  Try to involve the families in a variety of ways in the liturgical celebration  You might consider a social gathering after the Mass… a good way to build connections with new families.

Children Helping Children  

An initiative towards Mission Sunday in October  Missionary Children was established in France as part of the Pontifical Mission Society and has spread across the globe inviting children in parishes and schools to get involved in Mission Month in October leading up to Mission Sunday – last Sunday of October.  Children are invited to say a prayer and to make a small sacrifice to give a small donation to Missionaries working with children.  Today resources are prepared that can be used in parishes, children’s liturgy groups, schools, and families to tell children about the work of the Missions such as:  

‐ Mission prayer in English and Irish ‐ Activity calendar ‐ Advent resources ‐ First Communion friends ‐ Missionary Rosary ‐ Mass Book ‐ Prayer service for the special day dedicated to Children helping children with

Easter for Children

Easter Egg Hunt Why not set up an Easter egg hunt for the children of the parish in the grounds/garden around the church   Combine this with a colouring/art competition for different ages at the same time – a useful way of coping with large numbers!  Ask some parishioners to be the judges and give away Easter eggs as prizes  Giving Easter Eggs… Why not ask the children of the parish to give an Easter egg to a child who may not be so lucky as them and receive lots of eggs…  Ask them to bring an Easter egg to Mass the Sunday before Palm Sunday and to bring it up to the altar as part of the offertory procession. The eggs are then distributed to needy causes…perhaps ask your local parish St Vincent de Paul society…local hospital…

Encouraging Prayer for Vocations

Creating a chain of prayer for vocations is one way of raising awareness and inviting all members of the faith community to become involved in praying…  Ideas that are tried and tested… 

- Choose two symbols of vocation – cross, chalice, bible, candle… Invite families or individuals to commit to one week in the year to placing these symbols on display in their home and praying for vocations each day as a family or alone The family/individual comes forward at the end of one of the Sunday masses to receive the symbols to take home and returns them to the sacristy on Saturday ready for the next family. 

- Set aside an hour of Eucharistic adoration each month – or each week – and invite people to gather in silence before the Blessed sacrament to pray in their own way for vocations to the priesthood and religious life 

- 31 days of prayer Set up a calendar for each month and invite families or individuals to commit to pray on one day each month for vocations – as each new month comes highlight the calendar and ask new people to make a commitment 

  Cork and Ross Prayer for Vocations  Heavenly Father, We praise you and thank you for all you have done for us. We thank you especially for sending your Son, Jesus Christ, to visit and save us. We ask you to bless our family and all the people of our parish, especially those who are suffering in any way. Encourage those in our parish whom you invite to become priests and religious, and grant them the generosity of mind and heart to follow your call. May they bring good news to our world today. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Family Rosary  Encourage families to reintroduce the praying of the Rosary together – a good time to start is October – the month of the Holy Rosary  You could prepare and distribute prayer cards encouraging families to pray a decade each day together   Resources are available from the office

First Days at School  In September many families experience taking their child to school for the first time and it can be a difficult time for parents as well as children.   So why not…  Host a coffee morning for all the new parents who are coming to your parish school for the first time. It will help them to get to know each other and to get to know the parish community too…  Work with the school parents association – they are often glad of the contact and the offer of help

Grandparents Day  Today many grandparents play a significant part in the nurturing of children…and especially in the handing of our faith to them…  Celebrate their important role in the life of the family on Grandparents day in September – invite them and their grandchildren to come to Mass on this day and offer a special blessing for them  The Catholic Grandparents Association seeks to support the role of grandparents in handing on faith in their families see their website at:  www.catholicgrandparentsassociation.com  They have their own pilgrimage to Knock on the second Sunday of September each year and they have their own office in Knock where you can call any weekend

Ice cream Fun days  Every year  in May and June Down Sydrome Ireland invites us to join with them in hosting an ice cream fun day in our parish…many parishes have over the last few days said this has been one of the most successful events for their parish assembly!  To get involved register your parish with them…  HB will then send you vouchers to provide your with the ice cream –they also provide promotional materials too!  You get volunteers from the parish assembly and beyond to offer ice cream to everyone as they leave the Church after Mass  Parishioners, if they wish, are invited to make a donation to the work of Down Syndrome Ireland in exchange for their ice cream  For more information see:  www.downsyndrome.ie

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Some parishes are thinking about a separate children’s liturgy of the word for Sundays…Is this you?  You need a group of adults – preferably some parents of young children – who will take leadership particularly in getting the group started.  After the Penitential Rite of the Mass the celebrant invites the children to come forward and hands the children’s lectionary to one of them – they then lead all the children (those who are 7 and under – when they begin the Do this in Memory programme for 1st Holy Communion they should remain in the church) to a separate room in the church building.  Here they listen to the readings adapted for children and are helped to understand the message for today by the leaders – this can include art, music, symbols etc…  At the offertory they process back into the church and show the celebrant what they have been learning about Jesus.  Activity sheets are also provided for children to take home and parents are encouraged to share again the story and message of Sunday at home with their children.   Resources available are:  The book used for childrensʹ liturgy is:  ʺThe Liturgy of the Word with Childrenʺ by Katie Thompson. Published by Kevin Mayhew in  2004  ISBN 1844171884   Also used is ʺFaith Map ‐ Resources for Children based on Sunday Readingsʺ  Published by Redemptorist Press 2005. ISBN 0 85231 3047.   The Childrensʹ Lectionaries used are: ʺSunday Book of Readings ‐ The Lectionary Adapted for Childrenʺ by Sr Paula Freeburg D.C.  ISBN 0 929496 547 4th Edition 2008

Lollipop Day  “a little lolly goes a long way!”  Every year on the last Tuesday in February the group responsible for research into oesophageal cancer holds its Lollipop Day to raise much needed funds for its work.    Could your parish be part of this? And join patron golfer Padraig Harrington in supporting this cause  You might host a lollipop day party in the parish… You could sell lollipops in the parish… You could link up with local schools to offer lollipops for a donation towards their work…  For more details on this fun event see:   www.lollipopday.ie

Operation Christmas Child

Giving the gift of love across the globe

Since the early 1990’s Operation Christmas Child has been sending “shoe boxes” at Christmas to children across the world.  In 2006 over one and half million children received one of these gifts.  Many of these children are living in orphanages, hospitals, homes, in the street or in families stuck in the poverty trap.  Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes focus on the true meaning of Christmas bringing hope, joy and a little of God’s love from far away into difficult situations.  Taking part is easy.  Fill a shoe box with a range of small items (see web site for list) suitable for your chosen gender and age group – then you can send a “box of love” to Eastern Europe or Southern Africa. There are local collection points across the diocese. Why not organise this Christmas project with the children and families in your parish?

Parish Baptism Preparation Teams

What is it? A group of people who visit families in their homes or host meetings in the parish for parents who are requesting Baptism for their child. They are trained in all aspects of preparing families for the celebration and also to answer any questions the parents might have about the ceremony. They usually attend the ceremony and organise readers etc…  Training… is provided by the Pastoral Development Office over four sessions – three delivered in common with a number of parishes and the final session in your local parish for your own team.  Why? The team plays a significant role in meeting new parents who may be new to the parish or it may be their first time making any connection with the parish. You, as a team member, often become the welcoming face of the parish community ‐ the central element of the rite of Baptism being “The Christian community welcomes you with great joy”.    Members of the parish Baptism team bring this phrase to life in the parish as they meet with parents, children and families.  If you are interested in setting up such a team in your parish contact Karen at the PPD office 021 4537601 or email karen.kent@corkandross.org

Parish Picnic

Many parishes today are seeking to build connections with younger families, newcomers, immigrants…sometimes a social occasion is a way forward. Offering a space where people can gather, meet, mix, get to know each other is a new opportunity in the parish to build community together…  You might consider focussing on inviting families of children who received First Eucharist, celebrated baptism, Confirmation during the year…  You might offer special invitations to those who have moved into new housing developments in the parish…  You might have a family celebration for all who serve the parish in ministry in some way…Ministers of Word and Eucharist, Choirs, musicians, servers, cleaners, sacristans, altar society, V de P, St Joseph’s Young Priests Society, parish assembly/pastoral council…and many more…  Ask them to come and to invite others to come… 

 - It is a good way of meeting a wider group who minister within the community…  - Ask some volunteers to organise activities for youngsters… 

music…entertainment…face painting…games…  

- Try to make it a celebration of family and community  

- Ask everyone to bring food to share  - Make a point of meeting and greeting those who come…

Pentecost and celebrating Confirmation children

Every year in our parishes children from our parish receive the sacrament of Confirmation – many of us while we are aware of this are not able to be present to share in this celebration when our children confirm for themselves their commitment to the Christian community…  Why not on this day when we mark the coming of the Holy Spirit on the first apostles gathered in the Upper Room invite the newly confirmed children and their parents to join the parish community for one of the Sunday masses…  During the celebration of mass the parish assembly could offer special prayers during the prayer of the faithful, offer congratulations and encouragement, you could even design and give a certificate to mark this special day to them.  Texts of special prayers/blessings are available from the Pastoral Development Office And perhaps invite the young people and their parents to join the community for a cup of coffee after mass…a great way to build connections in your local parish!

Praying the Angelus  Each  day  at  12noon  and  6:00pm  the  bells  of  the Angelus  are  rung  in many  of  our Churches and RTE pauses on radio and television for one minute to reflect and pray…  Encourage parishioners  to remember  to stop, pause  in  their daily activities and  to say this prayer…  Why not prepare and distribute a prayer card with the prayer on  it in your parish – a good  starting place might  be  families preparing  for  the  sacraments  of Baptism,  First Holy Communion, Confirmation and Marriage

Saint Brigid’s Feast Day: 1st February  Celebrate one of Ireland’s Patron Saints by inviting the families, parents, children, grandparents…to gather and hear the story of Brigid; participate in her traditions and prayers and make Brigid’s crosses together for your homes.  Conclude the evening with the Blessing of the Crosses which will hang in the homes of the parish for the coming year…  A great activity for all ages!

Saint Francis of Assisi: October 4th  Blessing of animals  Invite families and especially the children to bring their pets, small farm animals to the church grounds today for a service of blessing of the animals.   Gather around a large picture or statue of saint Francis with the animals…  Tell the story of Saint Francis and his love of all of God’s creation, sing hymns, and pray together – celebrating the love we have for animals and the companionship we enjoy from family pets…

Send a card

We all love to receive cards and greetings as we celebrate special days throughout the year.  The card as well as sending greetings lets us know as an individual that we are in the thoughts of another at this time.  Every year our parish is host to many special occasions in the lives of parishioners – but often we are not present at the celebrations in the church.  Why not let others know that the parish assembly members are praying for them and sharing their joy as they celebrate these special moments in their lives…  

- Send a card to families as they celebrate the Baptism of their child - Send a card to each of the children as they receive their First Holy Communion - Send a card to each of the young people as they receive the sacrament of 

Confirmation - Send a card to the couples who celebrate the sacrament of Marriage in your parish   Receiving the card lets them know they belong to the family of the church and to your parish   You might design a special parish card for these occasions…  – ask an artistic parishioner/s to design the card and get it printed or have competition to design the card…get more parishioners involved

Talent Exchange  Every parishioner  in  your parish has  a gift,  skill,  talent  or  expertise  in  some  area  or other…whether  its  music,  languages,  gardening,  knitting,  sewing,  woodwork…and much more…  What  if you were  to match  those with  skills with  those wanting  to  learn…match  the knitter with  someone who wants  to  learn…match  the  Italian  speaker with  someone wanting  to  learn phrases  to go on holiday, match  the  experienced gardener with  the novice….  Set  up  an  exchange  database  for  your  parish…new  friendships may  be  formed  as talents are exchanged…

Temperance Sunday  In February on a designated Sunday the Church celebrates Temperance Sunday – check the liturgical calendar for the exact date.  On this day…  ‐ Highlight the work of the Pioneer Society  ‐ Invite new members to consider joining the society – you could invite new 

members in preparation for today and then enrol them during one of your Sunday Masses 

‐ Include prayers today for all who suffer from addictions and for their families  ‐ Tell the story of the well‐known Cork man – Fr Matthew – in your parish

The Gathering  2013 sees the island of Ireland celebrate The Gathering!  During this year we are encouraged to invite people to gather – especially those who have moved away from their home land…  All over the country groups, communities and families are preparing for this special event – inviting the people to gather in many different ways…as a parish how can you link into this national event – be part of The Gathering…  Some ideas… ‐ Invite all those who were Baptised in your parish to our special celebration 

 ‐ Invite all those who were married in your Church to come for a  celebration and 

blessing – why not link it to Saint Valentine’s Day  

‐ Invite all those who received First Holy Communion or Confirmation to return to a celebration of faith  

 ‐ Research all those from the parish who gave their lives as priests, sisters, nuns, 

brothers, missionaries at home and abroad, make a display, invite them to come for a prayerful celebration of vocation – a good time for this is Vocation Sunday (4th Sunday of Eastertide) 

 ‐ Have one special celebration of Parish inviting all families in the parish to invite 

family members who have moved away from the parish to return ‐  time for prayer and party! 

 ‐ Link the gathering with the Year of Faith – host a gathering a local monastic ruin, 

Holy Well, Mass Rock, old Church…invite religious orders who have been part of your parish history of faith to join you…celebrate the handing on faith through the years

Welcoming Immigrants to our parishes

An invitation to representatives from parishes to come to meet with Dr Helen Young of the Episcopal Council for Immigrants to discuss resources available to parishes to assist you in connecting with people from other countries who make their home in Ireland.   This gathering will take place on:  Thursday 9th February 11:00am to 12:30pm Turner’s Cross Parish Centre (hosted by Pastoral Area 17: Ss Peter & Paul; South Parish; Turner’s Cross; St Augustine’s; Holy Trinity; St Francis)  Resources in several languages will be available to take home to your parishes… such as… Sacramental certificates; Pre‐nuptial enquiry forms & Letters of freedom; Mass responses; prayers for unity; welcome messages; seasonal greetings; prayers on lighting a candle; information about cultural and sacramental norms in other countries… and more…  It is also an opportunity to ask questions and suggest resources that you need in parishes…  To book a place a this resource session please contact Sr Karen 021 4537601 or email karen.kent@corkandross.org

World Chocolate Day: September 4th

Why not join in on World Chocolate Day on September 4th. World chocolate day is an annual event, with various events organised in different countries.  

The world day started first in 2003 and now events are organised annually on September 4th. The day itself was chosen because it is the birth date of the World Chocolate Day founder, the Italian, Valeria Lo Iacono. 

Easter and Christmas have always in their own way, been unofficial days when chocolate is sold on a mass scale, but they are not times of the year when people buy and eat chocolate for the chocolate itself.  

Three specific things we suggest you on September 4th are: 

- Take a box of chocolates to work for your colleagues - Take a box of chocolates to the local old people’s home. - Enjoy a special box of chocolates at home with the family 

Or in the parish 

Why not share a box of chocolates after Mass today – chocolate will always bring a smile to the face of the recipient!
