A Note From Bob -

So much more than we could have planned for! This month’s story is not only an example of how God has worked through Sheridan House to permanently change lives; but it is also a picture of a life come full circle.

In the mid 1970’s Richard was one of our first graduates. Back then he was a boy searching for direction for his life. Today he and his wife are the ones pointing children in the right direction. Richard and his wife serve as house parents at Baptist Children’s Homes in North Carolina.

After his career in the Navy, Richard is taking advantage of his military pension to help other children find the direction that was given to him … all in the name of Christ.

At Sheridan House we want to do more than point children and families to Christ. It is our mission to help them learn to reach past themselves and their own needs to help others know that God has a plan for their lives.

Richard stands as an example of an individual who “got it” while he was at Sheridan House as a teenager. He has continued letting God direct his path into his 50’s. Thank you for helping us reach these children and families. Together God is using us to change lives and change the future. Yes … It works!

Dear Dr. Barnes,

This is an update to let you know what Jesus has been

doing in my life. I am now 53 years old with a son and a daughter.

I have been a member of the Gideon’s International for the past couple of years

and I participate in the local jail ministry. I also assist with teaching adult Sunday school.

My wife and I have been child care workers in a long term residential cottage for fifteen years with

Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina Broyhill Campus in Clyde, North Carolina. We work

with up to twelve young ladies in Haywood Cottage and the Lord has used my time that I spent at

Sheridan House for his glory. Some of my fondest memories are those that I had with Mom and Pop

Dean Davis, of you and your friends lifting weights, and you being our mentor while we sat in church

listening to Pastor Billingsley.

I reflect back a lot on those times at Sheridan House and on some of the lessons that I learned.

Those same lessons I try to pass on to the troubled teens that we work with. Being at Sheridan

House was one of the brightest spots of my childhood which I will always treasure.

I see that you are still “the man.” I guess you can’t find the word “retirement” in the Bible either;

I guess I will be a child care worker until the Lord calls me home or elsewhere.

The joy I have working with children is better than anything else. It’s hard, trying, and tiresome at

times, but oh the blessings! Thank you, “Mr. Barnes;” if you’re ever

up this way, stop by and say “hello.”
