Stagecoach is Britain’s largest part time theatre school, offering quality training in

Drama, Dance and Singing to young performers from 4 – 18. The aim is to catch both talent and enthusiasm at an early age, and provide opportunities for budding young performers to express themselves by giving them a good basic education in the three major performance disciplines of drama, dance and singing, activities that can help enormously with self-development.

Students are taught by professional staff who are able to draw upon a vast selection of material to stretch children’s imagination beyond the confines of any traditional school syllabus. Classes rotate so that each student gets an hour each of drama, dance and singing at every session. Shorter

90-minute sessions for the 4-6 year olds run alongside the main school and activities take place under one roof and classes are deliberately kept small, no more than15 in each.

Twice a year parents and friends get the chance to see the students work and parents are kept in touch with their child’s progress through written reports. There is no pressure of an audition to join, enthusiasm and commitment are all that’s needed.

Bilingual BenefitsThe Gaelic Parent and Child Group, Croileagan Clach Mhanainn, meet in Menstrie every Tuesday morning and cater for children from 0 – 5.

The children (and parents) are introduced to the Gaelic language through the medium of song and play in an informal and friendly atmosphere. Donaldson’s Opens Its Doors Donaldson’s School in Linlithgow is offering an opportunity for parents of deaf children, or children with communication difficulties, to take a tour of the school, meet the staff and experience for themselves the state of the art facilities.

Taking place on Saturday, 7th May 2011 from 10am to 1pm, prospective parents and education professionals will be welcome to join this informal Information Day. The school’s experienced team will be on hand to show how their specialist teaching methods are helping children and students from nursery to 19 years old. Donaldson’s is a national Grant Aided Special School and pupil placements are jointly funded by the

Scottish Government and local authorities across Scotland. Placements are subject to approval from your local authority; there are no fees for parents to pay. Mary O’Brien, head teacher, said: “Previous Information Days have been well received by prospective parents, particularly those who feel they will benefit from additional support and understanding of their children’s needs. We understand the challenges that face such families and this is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate, through informal meetings and workshops, the range of services that are available to help them.”

An exhibition of contemporary children’s book illustration curated by Julia Donaldson. Julia Donaldson is the

author of over 150 books for children and her 1999 book The Gruffalo, illustrated by AxelScheffler,isnowachildren’sclassicandpublishing phenomenon; selling 3 million copies worldwide. She is also the Patron of Artlink Central - a charity which puts artists, musicians and storytellers into schools, hospitals, prisons and community spaces to work with children and adults and help them develop their talent and creativity. As interest in the art of illustration for children has grown considerably in recent years the Park Gallery is delighted to collaborate with Artlink Central

and invite Julia Donaldson to curate ‘The Illustrators’ - an exhibition which presents an overview of contemporary children’s illustration.

The exhibition aims to highlight the diverse range of approaches to illustration and focuses on a number of illustrators who have worked with Julia over the years. Featuring original illustrations by, Axel Scheffler, amongst others and sketches, ideas and film, the exhibition will provide an insight into the illustrator’s working methods. Foster Carers NeededFalkirk council are currently recruiting for full time foster carers for young people aged 10 – 18 years. We will be having an information evening on the 22nd March at The Park Hotel, Falkirk from 7pm – 9pm. There will be foster carers and qualified social workers there on the night able to answer any questions that you may have. Please come along and join us. Falkirk Library Service runs a series of sessions for parents and babies which promote bonding with children and encourage parents to share stories, songs and rhymes with babies and toddlers in a fun and exciting way. For babies 0-18 months, we have our monthly Bounce and Tickle and Baby RhymeTime sessions, in which babies are introduced to nursery rhymes and songs.

For toddlers aged 18 months to 3yrs we have Toddleround or Toddle Rhyme Time sessions where we use more action based rhymes and songs to stimulate both parent and child. Again these sessions are once a month. These sessions can last up to 30 minutes and numbers for sessions are limited, with some libraries operating a ticketing scheme. For older children, 3+, we have weekly storytelling sessions where the children are introduced to popular storybooks.

Enjoy quality time with your kids this EasterWhether you’re a working parent

looking to spend time with your brood over the Easter

weekend, or a full-time mum desperate tofillalongschoolholiday,hereareafewideas to try out with your children. With a bit of planning and a few inspired ideas, you can avoid the tantrums and arguments and tear your darlings away from the TV and the Wii and enjoy the Easter break, rather thanfindingyourselfcountingdownthedays until school starts again!

Plan the day The holidays are a great time to bring back some of the old fashioned games and spend real time with your kids. It can be hard atfirst,throwingyourselfintogamesand

activities, but this is the stuff that childhood memories are made of. It is important to plan your day. If you let them drift from one cartoon to the other they’ll get frustrated very soon!

Activities at home With a little thought, you can come up with dozens of fun things to do at home, from building castles out of rubbish to dens in the garden, but when you run out of ideas, here are a few more. • invest in some Play-Doh, art supplies

and face paints and get creative• hardboil some eggs and paint with

food colouring. When they are dry they are great for egg rolling - if you haven’t got a hill, a slide will do!

• water painting - paint with a clean paintbrush and a pot of water outside on walls, paving slabs, fences. It’s very effective and the sun removes the evidence!

• home camping – hang a tablecloth over furniture, add a torch and a sleeping bag and have some fun!

• decorate biscuits by mixing icing sugar and water in a bowl to make runny icing and decorate with sprinkles or smarties.• pass the parcel. Why save it for parties? Your kids can do the wrapping too using old newspaper, with prizes as simple as a sticker or packet of raisins.• make pasta jewellery • roll a sheet of newspaper into a ball and

play volleyball over a washing line.• make salt dough with 3 cups of plain

flour,1cupsaltand1cupwater.Modelitlikeplaydoughanddryoutfinishedmodels in a cool oven. Then paint and varnish.

• treasure hunt - hide toys or sweets around the home and give your kids cluestofindthem.Kidslikesettingthehunts too. Alternatively, devise a nature trailwheretheyhavetofindaseriesofitems such as different coloured leaves.

• set up a home cinema in your living room: close the curtains, rearrange the furniture, make tickets and prepare snacks before putting on your favourite DVD.

• hit the park and get active. Borrow the nearest friendly dog and go for a walk, or set up an obstacle course in the garden with buckets, chairs, tables, garden rakes…anything goes really!

• encourage your kids to dig a vegetable patch of their own in your garden. If you don’t have any outside space, make aminigardenbyfillingaplanttraywith

earth and arranging small sprigs of leaves, daisies and grass over the soil. Try small pebbles for paths and foil for a pond.

Invite their friends over When you’ve run out of ideas, invite your children’s friends over to play. You may think double the children means double trouble, but it’s often

easier for them to have playmates around to entertain each other. It also means they will get invited back, giving you a

much-needed break!

Give them some jobs to do for pocket money Children like to earn their own money and to get a bit of responsibility – they will often jump at the chance to do a chore that you have been putting off for ages.

Easter Exercise Fun in Falkirk Falkirk Active Schools are offering another Easter Holiday packed with free activities to keep the children of Falkirk active. The programme will run from the 4th – 8th April and the 11th – 15th April in various venues throughout Falkirk. The holiday programme is open to all children who live within the Falkirk Council area and will include activities such as free running, ultimate frisbee, street dance, nursery Zumba, basketball, cheerleading and much more. Free Activities There are many free activities going on if you know where to look. Check out your local library that often has a range of Easter activities for all ages. Remember that the Smith Gallery in Stirling is free, as is Callendar House in Falkirk. Both have kids corners with activities or dressing up as well as the all-important café. There are loads of great parks in the area and miles of cycle paths suitable for kids. Our favourites include cycling along the canals (particularly from Polmont to Linlithgow) and from Dunblane to Doune on the cycle path. Childcare comes in a range

of shapes and sizes, including willing relatives, nurseries, childminders and playgroups Apart from you of course, do nurseries offer the best

childcare? That depends on what would suit your child – andfindingagoodnursery.Ifyourchildwould thrive on the constant stimulation of other children and adults they trust, using a wide range of toys and outdoor facilities then the answer is probably yes. Other advantages include year-round care andtheexperienceofqualifiedstaff,whichcanbeparticularlyreassuringforfirst-timeparents.

When and where to start? Nurseries with the best reputations tend to be hot property, and baby units are more scarce than places for 2-5 year-olds, so start looking well ahead of the time you’ll need a place, and join a waiting list if necessary. Some mothers start while they are still pregnant; others wait until their child is a babe in arms and they have a better idea of what they need.

Your child’s needs Once you’ve drawn up a shortlist of the nurseries you are considering, go and look around and ask lots of questions to see if they would suit your child.

Consider issues such as your child’s daily

routine (nap times, type of food provided etc),staffqualificationsandexperience,staffto child ratios and what the staff turnover is like. Check that you are happy with the cleanliness of the premises, security, the policy on discipline and late collections. Ask to see the latest Care Commission report or read it online www.carecommission.com Find out if there are any extra charges for nappies, meals, certain activities and the cost of the deposit to go on the waiting list. Factor in the time it will take you to travel to and from the nursery, probably during rush hour. After all this, the most important thing is to absorb the atmosphere and look at whether the children are relaxed and happy, and members of staff are responsive and caring.

Nurseries in a nutshell Private Nursery• A useful option for working parents,

day nurseries are typically open from 8am to early evening and children can stay for all or part of the day.

• Some parents feel uneasy about leaving their baby in sole care, no matter howwell-qualifiedthatpersonis.It’sreassuring to know that nursery staff can safely take breaks, and that you are covered if a member of staff is off sick.

• Consistency - your child can stay in the same environment from the day you go back to work until they start school.

• Social environment - children who attendnurseryfinditeasiertosettleinto routines when they start primary school.

Nursery classes in schools • Afirststepintoschool,although

a school nursery place does not automatically guarantee a place at that school.

• Convenient if you are already dropping siblings at the school.

• Stimulation - some children are ready for school earlier than others and readily take to structured, educational play.

• Age-specificactivitiesaregearedtothe school children they are becoming rather than the babies they used to be.

The cons: • Sessions tend to be just 2 hours

which is not practical for many families. Fulltime places are few and far between.

Out of School Clubs• Out of school clubs are for school-age

children to play, learn and have fun in groups.

• Usually based in or near schools, and are mostly used by families where parents work.

• Playworkers will often pick children up from local schools where the club is separate from the school.

• Most out of school clubs provide places for between 10 and 40 children although some are smaller and others are larger.

• Some clubs also provide places for threeandfouryearoldstofitaroundnursery or preschool education.

• There are breakfast clubs, after-school clubs and holiday playschemes. These services are regulated by the Care Commission and are subject to annual inspection (unless they are caring for children for under 2 hours a day and fewer than 6 days a year).

Help with the costsNursery fees vary greatly, depending on location, demand and what is offered, but can be from around £100 to over £200 per week.1. Local authorities receive government

funding so they can offer 12 hours a week of early years education to all three and four year olds from the term after their third birthday. If you choose a nursery which costs more than the funding or need more hours, you top up the difference.

2. Child tax credits and working tax credits are available to help with childcare costs. From April 2011, the ‘child’ element of the child tax credit will be increased for families earning up to £16,190 a year with an above-inflationincrease.Atthesametimethough, families earning over £41,400 will no longer be eligible for the full tax credit.

3. Some employers offer childcare vouchers which staff can opt to receive instead of part of their salary. Parents can save up to £1000 a year by reducing their income tax and national insurance contributions.

Hummingbird House NurseryHummingbird House Nursery and Out of School Care Service is situated in the beautiful city of Dunblane, with its calm and peaceful community. Bright Beginnings NurseriesBright Beginnings Nurseries have been established in the Stirling area for over a decade operating from sites in both Stirling and Bridge of Allan.

The Stirling nursery is housed in a stunning two storey property in the Kings Park area. Why you like living where you do?I have always found Falkirk such a friendly andwelcomingplace.Ialwaysfindmyselfchatting to complete strangers, and have met so many interesting people since living here - many are now friends!!!

Favourite shop:Scarlett Ribbons on Glebe Street - I love alltheunusualandquirkygiftsyoucanfindin this shop, and the ladies that work there are always so helpful and friendly.

Favourite Park:The kids always love going to Zetland Park in Grangemouth. There is something there for kids of all ages and abilities so its great if you have kids of different age groups to all be in the one place and keep everyone happy and entertained.

Favourite day out:We love going to Briarlands Farm just outside Stirling. On a nice sunny day its great to meet up with the other mums, take a picnic and sit and let the day go by while the kids are running about, jumping on the giant bouncy pillows and climbing on the giant haystacks. It’s great value for money and the kids love it.

Favourite Child Friendly Restaurant:I love Behind the Wall, even though its not specificallytargetedatpeoplewithkids,the staff are always more than happy to accommodate you, and the kids love the food there. When my daughter was at the

school nursery in the afternoon session, all the mums used to meet there for lunch on a Friday and take the toddlers with us too....The staff welcomed us back every week and gave the kids crayons and things to draw on so the mums could all relax.

No parent should be without:Some ‘me’ time! I think everyone should treat themselves to a break away from the kids on a regular basis and not feel the slightest bit guilty about it! Everyone needs to re-charge batteries to be better equipped to deal with what family life throws at you, and if you are happier, the family is happier! I always try and organise a regular ‘mums night out’ so we can all let our hair down together! All I can say on those nights is Falkirk, watch out!!!!

Parenting pet hates:Books that tell you how to bring up your children and tell you that you are doing it wrong if you don’t follow them! Having had 2 children I totally know that what works for one does not work for the other as they are 2 totally different personalities. I’m thinking of writing my own book called the alternative guide to parenting and giving tips like changing the clocks forward in the house to make the kids think it’s bedtime already when I’ve had enough (then setting them back an hour so I get a long lie in the morning! ) Most embarassing moment:We went to an ABBA tribute night about 5 years ago up at The Three Kings...now I thought EVERYONE would be dressed up...how wrong was I!!!! I turned up with myblondewig,flares,falseeyelashes...thelot....onlytofindeveryoneelsedressedinformal evening wear! I had the best night out of everyone there and got crowned the dancing queen by the band!

Best Childrens book:The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. The kids love me doing all the silly voices of the different characters. I went in to read it to all the primary one classes at Erin’s school last year and it went down a treat!

Best DVD:Toy Story or Finding Nemo...in fact any of the Disney Pixar ones!

Most played with Toys:We all love playing the Wii especially Mario Cart ...we’re all very competitive!

Most successful food:If you want a quick easy sweet treat to make up and take anywhere and you don’t have much time on your hands then try making Mars Bar Cake and you are sure to impress. Isn’t life hard enough without having to live on very little sleep? Sleep deprivation has been named as a torture technique

because that is exactly what it is. If your child doesn’t sleep, you become a living zombie; you are probably sleeping in different beds, snapping at everyone, getting over emotional at everything. YoustartlookingatthefloorinthesupermarketandthinkifIcanjustfindaquiet corner, I’ll have a quick nap... There are parents everywhere reading this and thinking yes that’s me - HELP! Well, don’t worry, help has arrived, and whatever problem you may be having and however yougotthere,itcanbefixed.

Many parents start off one of two ways with their delicious newborn; they will either have an angelic baby who sleeps all the time, anywhere, or a baby who is very alert and doesn’t seem to want to sleep. Most babies, including the seemingly angelic ones, may well become the baby that doesn’t want to sleep.

The reason this happens, so that you can be forewarned,isinthefirsttwoweeksyourbaby is sleepy and after this they will wake up and will be hungry. Most parents are told to feed on demand and so by the time your baby is able to sleep for 12 hours through the night (yes it is possible!) he or she will be used to being fed to sleep and that is what they will continue to do.

When you aren’t getting any sleep, you will do anything to get some. So out of desperation your baby will be picking up bad habits on how to get to sleep. Rocking your baby and using a dummy all contribute to your baby’s inability to go to sleep by themselves.

Firstly, don’t panic. There is always a way to re-teach them. It’s certainly harder as your baby gets older, especially after a year, but it’s still achievable. Setting up a good bedtime routine will reassure your baby, and for younger babies, a dream feed before you go to bed also helps them to sleep longer in the night. Making sure your baby has lots of daytime naps will stop your baby becoming

overtired. For example, a newborn will need to sleep every hour and a 6 month-old every 2 hours. Overtiredness is one ofthemainreasonsthatyourbabyfindsitdifficulttogointoadeepsleep.Youneedtobe consistent with whichever routine you choose, and also realise that it took time for this to become a habit so it may take time for it to work, but be strong, encourage your baby and it will work. Your baby craves some sleep as much as you do and what better lesson for them to learn, and for you to teach them…how to go to sleep!

10 Top tips from the experts 1. Start a simple bedtime routine as soon as

possible. A bath, massage and feed in the bedroom will help relax your baby.

2. Unless they had a low birth weight, don’t wake your baby up in the night to feed. Let them sleep – and you can too. Instead, give them a dream feed at 11pm.

3. Don’t change nappies in the night after 11pm unless dirty.

4. Try not to rock your baby or feed them to sleep. Cuddle them until they’re calm, then put them in the cot while they’re awake, but drowsy.

5. Your baby should always be awake when put in the cot so they know what is happening.

6. The room should be very dark for all sleeps but not pitch black.

7. Remember you only have a sleep issue if you are not getting enough sleep. Don’t compare yourself to all your friends.

8. When planning to put a sleep routine in place always start your day and end your day at the same time.

9. Be prepared to persevere, allow yourself four nights of the same routine and approach and then reassess.

10. Do not let your baby or child become overtired, they will be even harder to settle.
