MANY of you may haveheard the name John Hick, whether it is for his involve-ment in tall ships visitingFalmouth, as the newlyelected chairman of the Fal-mouth BID or as a bubblycharacter seen around thetown.

Personally, what I did not knowabout this fascinating man is howmuch he has shaped our town intosomething that passing visitorslook at in wonder.

The true pleasure in meetingJohn was discovering his uncannysense of humour and infectiouslaugh, something that I’m sure isthe reason why he is such a hit inFalmouth.

John was born in the town beforethe Second World War. After ashort period in London, John re-turned to Falmouth were his dadwent on to set up the family busi-ness.

He attended the local schools butadmitted: “I wasn’t very good atschool, and I always preferred togo sailing or fishing.”

Eventually he wenton to Cornwall Techand landed a jobworking in avionicsfor seven years.

Soon enough prior-ities changed for Johnand he decided to getmarried and start afamily.

John was fortunateenough to receive joboffers from all overthe world, includingGermany.

He first discoveredhis passion for squarerig ships when he was 12.

The day finally came when Fal-mouth was offered to host a race in1982; unfortunately the councilcould not fund the project, so Johnand his ‘band of brothers’ in Fal-mouth managed to organise therace with more than 100 vessels

taking part. “I have always keptmy link with the ships since then,so I would go off and sail on Pol-ish, Russian, all sorts of ships, nor-mally in the warm – I am not verygood at cold weather.”

Keeping in good contact with thebig ships was very important toJohn, especially when the oppor-tunity rose for these magnificentvessels to visit Falmouth once

again. After a prompt

visit to Bulgaria,John got chattingto a commanderin the RussianNavy. He added:“The conversa-tion ended upwith me inviting aRussian sail train-ing ship to comeover here andhave a Cornishtea.

“I went homeand forgot aboutit really, then inaround February

time the phone rang and it was theRussian Commander calling meup on my offer!

“We managed to pull everythingtogether for their arrival in July, however, in May I had anothercall, this time from a Russian sail-

ing ship also sharing the desire tocome to tea.

“I have to say this is when a smalltown really co-operates, it waswonderful. In the end we endedup with 800 cadets coming to Fal-mouth and 4 huge sailing ships, the whole town mucked in tomake it what it was”.

After the tripssuccess withsome of thew o r l d ’ sbiggest sail-ing names,John andhis teamput a bid into host arace in 1998.

John was thechairman of therace which in totalincluded 108 vessels.“It was bloody fantastic andin the mean time we formed acommittee called The FalmouthTall ships Association.

“In 2008 Falmouth hosted an-other tall ships event,” We ran arace in 2008 to celebrate The Fun-chal 500 Tall Ships Regatta andFestival do Mar 2008. This was thecentrepiece of year-long celebra-tions of the 500th anniversary ofthe first settlement on the Por-tuguese island of Madeira, we did

it in conjunction with the Por-tuguese in Lisbon, big and smallwe had around 20 vessels.”

The next race will be taking placein August, 2014. Falmouth is goingto be paired up with Greenwich(London). Twenty ships are againexpected to join the race.

“Our job here is to lookafter the birthing, a fa-

cility for the press,a facility for race

volunteers, acaptain’s re-ception, a pa-rade, a prizegiving cere-mony and allsorts of other

functions. “So you basi-

cally have any-thing from 60-70,000

additional visitors com-ing to the town, which is bril-

liant.” Another achievement for John is

his new role as chairman of theFalmouth BID.

It is no secret that John likes tokeep himself busy within thetown, but on top of that he has fourdaughters (Alison, Sarah, Mandyand Lizzie), four sons-in-law andnine grandchildren. He says: “Asfar as I’m aware we all like eachother, I have a wonderful family.”

The Studio, Hurlingburrow Farm, Sevenmilestone, St Agnes, Cornwall, TR5 0PG

WHAT are the first signs that someclients are nervous about visiting you?

Most patients tell Lucy that they are nerv-ous or embarrassed about their dental situa-tion during their initial call to arrange anappointment.

This usually transpires during conversa-tion about previous bad experiences andabout how it has taken a lot of courage tohave actually made the phone call to makethe appointment in the first place.

Patients often arrive early for their ap-pointment and then sit in their cars until theallotted appointment time, this ensures thatthey are less likely to see or have to talk toanyone while waiting in reception. Patientsare often very anxious and self-conscious,their body language is to bow their head orturn slightly away. Some patients talk a lotwhile some like to sit in silence and justwatch the DVD or flick through a magazine.

I would like to point out that reception isvery small and you are usually the only pa-tient waiting, plenty of time is allowed foreach appointment so the last patient has usu-ally left before you arrive, you will be greetedby Lucy who will offer you a cup of tea orcoffee.

The Dental Laboratory is within the samebuilding as the clinic so you may hear somemachinery – this is used ONLY to constructdental prosthesis (dentures, crowns andbridges). You may also see one or two tech-nicians moving through the building whileyou are here.

During the consultation I can physically seethe patient beginning to relax as they realisethat we are here to help and that there is a so-lution to what they perceived to be an im-possible situation.

Can you outline some of your experienceswith nervous patients?

Some patients like to sit and chat for almostthe entire hour of their consultation, being soconcerned about allowing someone to lookinto their mouth. It can take some convinc-ing that it is completely pain free; the only in-strument I use is a mirror.

We often chat about anything but teeth; it ismy means of catching up with various real-ity shows, soaps and the local gossip in var-ious local villages! Some patients burst intotears, often a combination of overcomingtheir fears and a relief that we can do some-thing to improve their dental situation anddental health. It really doesn’t surprise mewhen this happens; I understand their anxi-eties and how it affects their life, to the extentthat they are uncomfortable to communicate, socialise, eat, smile or even look at someone.

I have known patients to arrive with a scarfwrapped around their mouth during thesummer, one patient described how he hadbeen out with friends for dinner, he just satand had a coffee, lots of patients bring me a

bag of assorted dentures they have had madethat do not fit or are so uncomfortable or lookdreadful. Most have a story to tell about theirdental history

What differences can you see in patients oncethey have had a new denture fitted?

We can start to see a difference in people long

before their denture treatment is complete. Theyfeel more confident when coming to visit us,they begin to build a relationship with us andfeel more relaxed. Everybody is excited aboutthe final fit day – you really can see how someones life can change, they walk out of the cliniclooking different and feeling confident and farremoved from their first day of consultation.

WHAT can be done to en-courage more women intobusiness?

I was asked recently how easy is itto be an entrepreneurial woman? And my answer was that I firmlybelieve there is no reason why awoman shouldn’t be successful atrunning a business or entrepre-neurial within the organisation inwhich they work – I have alwayssaid that the barriers in front of usare only in our way if we choose notto climb over them.

As many will tell you, self-beliefand determination are key to mak-ing a business work and self-beliefcan be a huge factor in the successof a business or personal growth, particularly in the early days of es-tablishing a new business or grow-ing within your chosen career.

I truly believe during a tough eco-nomic, climate it is essential we taketime out of our business or place ofwork to network, listen and be in-spired, in order to grow ourselvesand gain the confidence that if oth-ers can do it, so can we. It is essentialnot to be afraid to ask for help if wewant to grow.

A mentor once said that no matterhow many close people you have inyour network, if you want to betruly great, you must have three es-sential people in your life at alltimes:

• A person who is older than andmore successful than you to learnfrom

• A person who is equal to you toexchange ideas with

• A person below you to coachand keep you energised

A great figure of history who em-bodied this principal was Aristotle– one of the greatest minds to evergrace this Earth. This was only sobecause he was constantly chal-lenging himself and working to re-fine his talents. He exchanged ideaswith other Greek Philosophers inthe ‘Academy’, learned from hismentor Plato, and taught a youngboy named Alexander... who wouldlater become ‘Alexander the Great’

If you want to be remarkable, youmust constantly challenge yourselfand surround yourself with re-markable people.

What can be done to encouragemore women into business or togrow within business?

In the past, taking time out of ourcareers to have children had alwaysbeen seen as one of the things thatholds women back. Howeverwhether due to the current eco-nomic climate or more womenwanting to achieve, I have seen achange - and I feel the support avail-able to working women now hasled to this change and could become

a significant reason for increasedwomen entrepreneurship here inCornwall in the coming year.

Getting back into employmentafter having a baby has always beenchallenging – it is extremely difficultto juggle our lives, changing our hatsfrom wife to mother to business-woman to educator to nurturer andprotector can bring its challenges.

With changes in technology andthe way we work, it is much easier toget a business started from home orwork remotely and this can bring

great benefits. Starting a new busi-ness is now a realistic and a moreflexible alternative to going back intoemployment.

Remote working can help find theright work life balance for you andbring great dividends to employersbut it is also important to be awarethat working from home can alsolead to the death of an entrepreneur– face to face contact and peer to peersupport is vital for personal growthand networking can support this.

Does your dad follow the in-structions?

Dads are notorious for not fol-lowing instructions, especiallywhen it comes to looking after theirown bodies.

Father’s Day is a great time forconsidering how you can improveyour health so that you can be fitand active enough to enjoy life withyour family. The Core and it’s teammay well be the answer.

A surprising number of new fa-thers appear in Helyn Morris’ Chi-ropractic clinic at Restore in TheCore after hours awake in the nighthelping to rock baby back to sleep, lifting car seats or playing boister-ous games.

Perfect

If your baby is three weeks, threeyears or 30! It’s great to be fitenough to enjoy your time withthem to the full.

If you’re a father you’re also in theperfect position to act as a rolemodel when it comes to your fam-ily’s health, not by being brave andsoldiering on, but by being open tonew ideas and positive ways tomaintain your health.

A well-balanced, pain-free body isa great start, and the services of achiropractor could be just whatyour body needs to get you back ontrack, with The Core’s team keep-ing you there.

One of the best ways to ensurethat your family has a positivehealth-related outlook is to ensurethat they are focused on prevention, taking a natural proactive approachto health, rather than simply a reac-tive one – eating healthily, exercis-ing and looking after your musclesand joints so that they support youwell now and in the future.

Instructors

Fortunately, waiting until the painbecomes unbearable is fast becom-ing a less common way of thinking.

Many doctors and fitness instruc-tors of all kinds now refer people tochiropractors and more people arediscovering the benefits of combin-ing this therapy with healthy exer-cise.

If you haven’t taken the step to-wards prevention and well-beingand your aches and pains are be-coming a pain in the neck, giveyourself a sporting chance. Father’sDay is the perfect time to make thatchange and become an even betterDad.

The Core provides a whole rangeof ways to help you or your fatherstart on the right road to fitness andhealth.

We have a full team of experi-

enced instructors who can guideyou towards your fitness goals, ei-ther through gym membership ofour PreCor gym –housing the latestequipment – through 1-2-1 personaltraining sessions; attending fitnessclasses from our vast studiotimetable or making the most of theoutdoors with our bootcamps,Nordic walking and beach zumba.

If you are looking to overhaulyour lifestyle and have been wait-ing for the right time, make Father’sDay the start of a new chapter.

The Core’s owner Helen Tite runsthe Kick Start Fat Loss club (KSFL)which combines diet and fitness, with the focus on clean eating andexercise, both at home and in theKSFL club meetings. Make thatchange for life and have the healthand energy to go out and makememories together.

As your father gave the gift of lifeto you, what better gift could yougive back than the gift of health, wellbeing and fitness?

After many years of working in higher andfurther education I was unexpectedly maderedundant.

I had to re-invent myself, like a lot of peoplehave to when nose-diving into a dark cloud ofpurposelessness. So, for good or bad, I'vewritten this book of short stories in the hope ofengaging the imagination of the reader, takingthem through a hilariously unsettling voyage offour misfits, who find themselves knee-deep indodgy karma, brought on by chemically inducedreality shifts.

You can buy Crooked Pathways on Amazon as an e-book for £1.98 or on paperbackfor £4.50. My future writing projects will work as sequels to these short stories. Readfree samples here: http://www.charlienewlands.com/Congratulations! I sense you thinking. Hyperventilation and panic ensues at the verythought of you, or anyone reading my work. Is it a worthy read? I’ve asked myself over and over again. Sometimes I worry about all those clevercynics out there. You know, the ones who love to hurl psychological grenades oflethargy at any form of self-driven creativity. Writing is a competitive business these days, which can make a new author (likemyself) feel like a deluded cyber wimp, jostling for position among a mob of established,self-published authors and, indeed, published authors with a loyal following of readers. Yes, I am human; I worry about such stuff. In fact, I worry about my lifetimehabit of absorbing everyday-ness and recording it in little notepads and on bits of scrappaper. It’s almost like I’m constantly trying to capture the moment in an attempt topreserve it forever or indeed, for whatever. Truth is, I don't know why I do this, but I'mstrangely driven to do it.

WHAT happens when you leave yourpet at the vets?

Many clients will bring their pet to their vetsfor routine surgical procedures (eg: neutering)but have little understanding of what happensto their beloved pet when they leave.

We find this lack of understanding andinformation can lead to anxiety and worry forthe owner as they wait for the telephone callsaying their pet is awake and recovering fromits anaesthetic.

I thought it would be useful to explain whathappens. Not all vets will do it exactly as wedo at Rosemullion, and I will explain how wedo it below, but for almost all vets the systemwill be similar.

Step One – Admittance

Animals booked in for surgery have anappointment with a nurse, usually between 8and 9 in the morning. The nurse will examinethe animal, making sure they are well and fitfor surgery, and check that they have notbeen fed overnight – the client will have beenadvised of this, but that water has not beenwithheld. The nurse will then discuss theoperation and ensure that the client has readand understands the consent form that allowners must sign prior to surgery.

Step Two – Pre-surgery

Once the owner has signed the consentform, the pet will be taken through to thekennelling area. All admitted pets are giventheir own kennel with bedding in to wait inprior to surgery.

We have separate cat and dog wards sothat stress is kept to a minimum ie: a catdoesn’t have to sit in a ward full of barkingdogs! If you wanted blood tests to check thehealth of your pet prior to surgery, those willbe taken now. We have an in houselaboratory, so the results are available within15 minutes.

Step Three – Pre-medication

Approximately 30 minutes before surgery, your pet will be checked by the operating vetand an appropriate pre-med given. This pre-med, normally given by injection under theskin, involves a mild sedative and pain relief. We do this to minimise the amount ofanaesthetic required which helps to keep yourpet relaxed as well as to provide a smoothrecovery.

Step Four – Anaesthesia

The majority of anaesthetics areadministered by injection into the vein runningdown the front leg of your pet.

Hair will need to be clipped off the leg to dothis, so don’t be surprised if you see a baldpatch when your pet goes home at the end ofthe day!

Once your pet’s asleep, a tube is passeddown the windpipe to enable oxygen and agas anaesthetic to be administered – this willkeep your pet anaesthetised while theoperation takes place.

Step Five – Patient Preparation

Once your pet is asleep, a nurse willprepare them for surgery.

This usually involves clipping aconsiderable amount of hair off!

Owners are often surprised at the amountthat needs to be clipped off for even a smalloperation but it is important that the skinsurrounding the operation site can bethoroughly cleaned and that hair doesn’t getin the way during the operation.

Once the hair has been removed, thesurgical site is cleaned and sterilised.

The operation will not start until we aresatisfied that it has been sufficiently preparedfor surgery.

Step Six – Surgery

Once prepared, your pet will be taken fromthe prep area into theatre where the operationwill take place. This is a sterile area and vetsand nurses working in this area will besuitably gowned to prevent dirt and infectiongetting into the theatre.

From the point where your pet wasanaesthetised, and throughout the surgicalprocedure, their heart and respiratory ratesare monitored by a nurse who remains withyour pet the whole time. These rates arerecorded so that any changes are notedinstantly and levels of anaesthesia can beadjusted. Intravenous fluids are oftenadministered, even during routine procedures,as they help maintain an efficient bloodcirculation.

Step Seven – Recovery

Once surgery is completed, your pet willhave the anaesthetic gas turned off but thetube in their windpipe remains in placedelivering oxygen until your pet has comeround sufficiently to allow it to be removed.

Your pet is then moved back into the preparea where a nurse will remain with them untilthey are fully awake and aware of theirsurroundings.

Once we are happy they have fullyrecovered, they’re taken back to their kennelarea to rest.

It is usually at this point that the owner isphoned to let them know everything is OK,and their pet is recovering from surgery.

Step Eight – Discharge

In the afternoon, an appointment will bemade with a nurse (or sometimes the vet) todischarge your pet.

We now take time to discuss with you anypost-operative care needed eg: care of anydressings, preventing your pet from lickingany stitches, what level of exercise and foodto give in the next few days.

Any post-operative treatment like antibioticsor pain relief are also discussed anddispensed.

Step Nine – Post-operative Checks

Depending on what the operation was for, apost-operative check is usually arranged for

3-4 days’ time – usually with the nurse. Herewe can discuss any problems you are havingand wounds and stitches checked to ensurethey are healing well.

Step Ten – Stitches Out

Usually 10-14 days post-surgery. A nursewill remove the stitches and check thesurgical site.

Any further worries or advice about theoperation can be discussed.

We find if a client knows what is happeningto their pet, they are much happier and itcauses them less anxiety.

If you are ever worried about what willhappen to your pet once they pass throughthe “big door to the back”, you should ask asmany questions as you want so your vet canput your mind at rest.

At Rosemullion Vets we are happy toarrange for clients to view the preparation and operating area before theirpet comes in if they are particularly worried, although this needs to be arranged inadvance and will be in the afternoon when the theatres are less likely to be in use.

Your pet is in good hands!

How it works! The Pro-Cut lathe works on the

vehicle, by attaching itself directly to

the hub.

The technology includes an

automatic, electronically

controlled, gyroscope system which

measures run-out in the hub and

corrects for this to an accuracy of

better than 0.05mm.

The automatic surface machining

of a disc is completed in around 4

minutes.

The complete process takes lessthen 9 minutes per disc.
