November 3, 2011 at a reception at 6:30 PM at Plano East Senior High. Before asking for announcements, Prince John was heard to sigh and wonder if anything would ever be

named for him? He thanked Jessica Jackson for her Birthday check and called on Mark Johnson, who announced that the free Dental Clinic will be held again for the second year on March 30, 2012. In 2010, three

hundred people were served at the free clinic. Mark guaranteed that we would be hearing a lot more from him about the clinic in the near future. City Manager Bruce Glasscock reminded Rotary Club members that Early voting had begun and that there were three very important proposals on the ballot to which a member asked how we should vote. The very prompt answer was to vote properly. Another attempt made to determine which way to vote failed also.

Scary Bob Epstein, who spurns using the microphone and, indeed, never needs one, announced that Movie Night would be November 17th, noting, however, that the movie to be shown was not one of his favorites. Asking if there

were any other announcements, commercials, etc., Prince John invited Earnest Burke to introduce the program. Approaching the podium, Earnest Burke pointed out that the wheel in the center of the Rotary banner has rungs and that the third rung on the wheel is for Community Service. Using this as a lead in,

he proceeded to introduce the speaker, relying on his 4th grade “mentee”, Amare Mason-Moore, at his side to give the name of the guest speaker, Memorial Elementary

Principal Sarika Pride. Much to Earnest’s surprise and chagrin, his “mentee” came up with another name whether from nervousness or perhaps from a lack of mentoring? It would be hard to say who was the most discomfited. Earnest quickly recovered his aplomb, saying “Our speaker today has a passion for learning new things and helping others achieve success.” Her experience includes 16 years in Education,

9th year in Administration as Principal at a Title I Elementary School in North Carolina. Before becoming the Principal at Memorial Elementary, she was an AP at Huffman Elementary, Plano Independent School District. While in North Carolina , after receiving certification training, she was selected to train other colleagues on evaluation and learning techniques that allow increased knowledge and control of the learning process. She received the Crystal Ruler award while in North Carolina for her work in developing Professional Learning Communities and was honored with the “Woman on the Move Award” for making positive changes in the teaching profession.” Principa Pride xpressed her sincere thanks to Plano Rotary Club members for their assistance in mentoring children at Memorial Elementary. She thanked Susan Shuler for mentoring Marlen

Mayorga, who has five siblings and benefits from the attention she gets from Susan, who initially had difficulty understanding the child’s name and thought it was Marlene. As an example of the students at

Memorial Elementary, she called upon 5th grader, Mikaila Barberiz, to read an essay she had written. Mikaila began by reading, “Have you ever lived before? Memorial Elementary is such an amazing school; it makes people feel as if they belong.”….. such an important concept for children.

Principal Pride shared a video on Partnerships , the best thing is opportunity to connect, an amazing honor… the partnership between Plano Rotary and the Memorial Elementary School. In the video various students participated,

pretending to be a doctor, a chef, a skate border, a ballerina. All were asked what they appreciated about the partnership with Rotary. One said the donation of money for equipment. Another said someone to talk to about life, and another mentioned time and money for art. Asked about words that they thought of in describing the partnership between Rotary and Memorial, they mentioned “Friendship, Generous, Family, Awesome, Fantastico, Reliable. The video included pictures of mentors and mentees

and their activities. Principal Pride said one of the many things provided through the partnership with Plano Rotary Club that the students greatly appreciated was a Year Book donated by Mr. Wilson of Alpha Graphics. “We could not do it without you!” Closing the program were two songs sung by 4th and 5th grade students under the direction of Ms. Rachel Keen, Music/Choir Teacher. The first song was “For Your Generous Blessing: Thanks to You”. The second was the Memorial Bobcat Song to which all Rotary members were invited to “roar” or to act as if they were whirling a lasso or to raise hands and yell “Yeah” at the proper time in the song. The enthusiasm was certainly shared. Prince John pronounced “We were as much entertainment for you!” and told the students a pair of shoes would be donated in their name. Closing with the recital of the Four Way Test, the meeting was adjourned at 1:00 PM.
