C.L.A.S.S. Registration Requirements & Information:

Registration is required for ALL classes 1 week in advance. Call 864-4167 or online at www.ca.uky.edu/laurel.

Class fees must be paid in advance. Please make checks payable to Laurel County Cooperative Extension. Credit cards are accepted in person and when registering online.

When registering online or by phone, Extension will hold your spot for two weeks until payment is received. If payment is not received 1 week prior to class, your registration will be forfeited.

Please be considerate of others. If you cannot attend please notify the Extension Office so others can participate in the program.

Refunds will only be given if the class is canceled by the Extension Office or if participant requests a refund one week prior to class—unless advertised differently.

Registration is required to receive notification of class changes or cancellation.

In the event that insufficient registration requires cancellation of a class, participants will be notified prior to the class by phone. We only notify those that have registered.

If Laurel County Schools are canceled due to inclement weather all C.L.A.S.S. programs will be canceled. If in doubt, please call the Extension Office at 864-4167 for confirmation or follow us on FACEBOOK at laurelcountyfcs.

Our classes are designed for adults 18 years and older unless advertised differently.

All classes are held at the Laurel County Extension Office, 200 County Extension Rd., London, KY unless noted otherwise.

Learn the basics of food preservation from drying, pressure canning, water bath canning and freezing in this hands on class.

Attention young ladies! Could you effectively defend yourself if attacked? This two session physical defense program for women offers no-nonsense, practical techniques of defense through awareness, prevention, risk reduction, avoidance, and hands-on defense training. Please note that R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. Students will learn to take an active role in their own self-defense and psychological well being. This class is for females age 13 - 19. Those under 18 will need to have a parent at the first session to sign a consent form. You must be able to attend both classes for a total of 9 hours.

Extension Homemakers are people, like you, who learn together. More than 200 Laurel County residents belong to the Laurel County Extension Homemakers. Local members receive a monthly lesson, a monthly newsletter and other opportunities to learn through special interest lessons. Members gather together to promote their common goal of education in such areas as family/

home life, family resource management and nutrition. Community involvement is encouraged through the giving of: high school scholarships, support of the Ovarian Cancer Research Program at the UK Medical Center, community events and much more. Extension Homemaker clubs are open to everyone without regard to race, color, age, sex, religion or national origin.

Specialty Homemaker Clubs focus on learning, developing and preserving a specific skill, interest or activity. Our

Just in time for back to school and our busy schedules, join this class and learn how to create meals that can literally be dumped into your slow cooker and be ready when you get home. Students will make and take home a meal ready to cook.

Come join us as students learn to create this large beautiful basket that is big enough to tote your stuff, impress your friends and yet is easy to make. An optional kit is available or students may bring their own project supplies. Optional kits are $80 and must be prepaid by Friday, August 12th. No supplies will be available the day of class. All participants will need basic basket making supplies. Class size is limited to 6 students.

One of the new trends is the use of paper for decorative items within the home. Paper decorations can add artful whimsy to interiors and are inexpensive. Following the informational lesson, we will experiment with a 3D paper folding project appropriate for the holiday season.

During this four session class, students will quickly learn how easy it is to create that special decorated dessert for any and all occasions. Students will learn to ice and decorate a cake and other sweet treats, make several different buttercream icing flowers, pipe lines and make simple borders, letters and shapes on your cake; transfer images to a cake to decorate, make icing the right consistency to decorate; fill and use a decorating bag, and much more.

Bring your paints and paper and learn how to reproduce a print in watercolor. Students may bring a landscape photo of their choice or may choose a design from a variety of art books during class. Our experienced instructor will teach various painting techniques as you work.

Join the new trend in quilting and learn how to make a mug rug. Beginners, intermediate and skilled quilters will enjoy designing, piecing, appliqueing, quilting and binding their own miniature masterpiece. Students will bring their mug, matching fabrics, basic sewing supplies and a sewing machine if desired. This project can be sewn by hand if preferred.

Students will learn how to needle punch while creating this adorable lamb. Needle punching is an art technique of looping yarn, floss or ribbon in a pattern through fabric. The special punch needle creates a looping that gives the pattern a rug like appearance. Needle punching is used to embroider items, create wall hangings, and other decor items. The class fee includes the tools and materials required for the project. To provide us time to purchase class tools, the class fee must be paid 9/2/16.

This class will teach you how to personalize your Smartphone and make it more user-friendly for the things you want to learn about your phone. Attend this 2 session class to learn how to change settings, download apps, take quality photographs, access emails, upload items, delete unwanted items, and figure out how to access help when you get stuck (besides just asking someone younger than you.) Start at the beginning and learn about your sewing machine and continue through to beginning your own project. This 10 part "Learn To Sew" series will cover a different topic in each class. Students will need to bring their sewing machines, manuals, attachments, and basic sewing supplies. As we work through the topics some small additional supplies may be identified for the following class. Please note this class will meet every two weeks October - February. Looking for a way to recycle some denim jeans? Join us as we teach how to make a tote or pillow using "faux" cathedral windows blocks. You can use completely recycled clothing from your closet for a one-of-a-kind memory quilt, or select a charm pack and jeans from a yard sale. Your choices will determine the finished look. Learn to make this fabric covered coiled rope bowl, using scrap fabric and a rope. Participants need to bring basic sewing supplies, a sewing machine that will sew a zig-zag stitch, 3/4" strips of scrap fabric (you will need 30 - 40 strips), thread that will either blend, contrast or read as a neutral, and a sack lunch.

Jabez Quilt Seminar—2017 January 17—21st

This year, our featured teacher is Mickey Depre. Mickey is a quilt artist, teacher, lecturer, and author. Mickey’s work mixes traditional quilting techniques with bold, innovative machine applique and thread work. Her quilts

have been described as whirlwinds of color, with oranges residing next to purples of all shades in harmony. Mickey states “There is more than enough fabric in the studio to be both an Art Quilter and a Traditional
