“The Early Days of Radio in Michigan” presents the history of the first commercial radio stations and the programs of that era. As the public interest increased and radio sales sky rocketed, radio soon became an all-American past time. From the mid-1920’s to the 1950’s, several hundred network radio programs were created. Some of the best shows originated from Detroit, Chicago and New York City. Deadly Outbreaks: Epidemics that Changed the WorldInvisible enemies have changed the course of history and killed more people than wars or natural disasters. With names like Black Plague, Malaria, Typhoid, Cholera, “Spanish Lady”, Tuberculosis and Polio, they attack their unaware victims, leaving behind horror, death and chaos. What were some of the bizarre

“remedies” employed (exploding frogs, drinking mercury)? With what weapons have some of them been controlled and what other deadly enemies might we face in the future? Fun with Metal DetectingHave you ever considered trying metal detecting, but were not sure where to start? Join President of the West Michigan Detector Club, John Dudley, as he leads you through the uses and techniques of metal detecting. You will learn how to use a metal detector and where the best places are to do a ground search for some great finds. You will also have an opportunity for a “hands-on” chance to see what’s found under the very ground that you walk on. Please wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Experience Mackinac Island and the Grand Hotel The Grand Hotel is often described as the crown jewel of Mackinac Island. You will explore its beginning as a Victorian resort, the role it played during Prohibition and why it is known as America’s summer place today. You will discover how it is decorated, its dining experiences and the “themed packages” it offers, why Architectural Digest named it the “Most Beautiful Hotel in Michigan,” and what it's like to be a year-round resident of Mackinac Island. If you have a favorite Mackinac Island memory, we would love to hear about it in class. Vera-Ellen: The Magic and the MysteryJoin Terry Dennison for an in-depth study of the life and career of the most versatile female dancer during the glorious “Golden Age of the Hollywood Musical”. Vera-Ellen has been Terry’s all-time favorite movie star since childhood; in fact, Terry is often called her number one fan! He was even asked to assist David Soren with the one and only Vera-Ellen biography, “The Magic and the Mystery”. Copies of the book will be used extensively in class. Vera-Ellen could do it all: tap, ballet, ballroom, acrobatic and lyrical. In this class, you will enjoy watching clips from her films, including White Christmas – her most famous film – and enjoy her dancing with Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, and Danny Kaye. Items from Vera-Ellen’s estate will be shown, as well as movie costumes and many other pieces of memorabilia. Come feel Terry’s excitement as he shares his mission of helping people remember Vera-Ellen; she was too good to be forgotten! Police Dog Handling 101 One of the most fascinating aspects of law enforcement is the K9 unit. Police dog handlers and their canine counterparts cover many responsibilities in the law enforcement world, including apprehending criminals and detecting explosives, contraband, and drugs. These dogs have the drive and intelligence that put them ahead of the rest of the pack due to the training and the bond with their handlers. Operation Barbarossa Germany’s 1941 Invasion of Russia during World War IIOperation Barbarossa – code name for the German Invasion of the Soviet Union – was one of the most significant moments in the first years of WWII. Learn how Hitler and Stalin were positioning prior to the 1941 invasion, including the signing of a “Non-Aggression Pact” between the two countries. You will examine the immediate run-up to the invasion, the three major German armies and their key Russian targets, and how the initial phases of the war were fought. The Myth of Empire: Imperial Spain and its LegacyThis class explores the expansionist adventure of Spain from the 1400’s through the Peace of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years War in 1648 A.D. The focus will be on how colonist states impose their culture upon a new land, only to have that new culture intermingle with the old ways of the indigenous peoples. Vera-Ellen: The Magic and the MysteryJoin Terry Dennison for an in-depth study of the life and career of the most versatile female dancer during the glorious “Golden Age of the Hollywood Musical”. Vera-Ellen has been Terry’s all-time favorite movie star since childhood; in fact, Terry is often called her number one fan! He was even asked to assist David Soren with the one and only Vera-Ellen biography, “The Magic and the Mystery”. Copies of the book will be used extensively in class. Safe Sitter Essentials: Skills for Babysitting & Staying Home AloneDo you feel ready to stay home alone, watch your younger siblings, or babysit for younger children? Then this class is for you! Join us to learn the skills you need to care for yourself and younger children. We’ll teach you how to prevent unsafe situations, and what to do when faced with dangers (such as power failures) or weather emergencies. We’ll also provide tips to help manage behavior, learn about the ages and stages of child development, and practice diapering. In addition, we’ll cover how to screen jobs and discuss fees. At the end of the class you will receive a certificate of completion, a babysitting tool-kit, and the skills you need to be prepared, be responsible, and be considerate, whether you are babysitting for family, friends or the neighbors. CPR & First AidDo you babysit or plan to become a babysitter? Are you a Boy Scout or Girl Scout looking to earn a new badge? Do you want to be prepared to help anyone that may need it when a medical emergency arises? Then this hands-on class is for you! This American Heart Association (AHA) Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED camp will teach the basics of first aid, CPR, and AED (automatic external defibrillator) skills. We’ll cover treatments for medical emergencies, injuries, and environmental emergencies, as well as CPR skills, with a special focus on child and infant CPR and obstructed airway techniques. You will have the opportunity to learn from KCC EMS instructor and train on the College’s state of the art equipment. Plus, you will receive an AHA Certificate of Completion at the end of camp. Additional Information Each semester we cancel courses due to low enrollment, only to find out that several of you intended to come! Enrollments are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis; however, we will add you to our waiting list if the class is full.
