Shortly after arriving in Davis late lastsummer, I found myself facing TVcameras and reporters in a researchfield that had been vandalized byantibiotech terrorists. I was trying toexplain why well meaning people findthemselves at odds regarding agricul-tural biotechnology.

Biotechnology has revolutionizedthe pharmaceutical industry and offersour best hope for developing the envi-ronmentally benign food productionmethods needed to keep pace with theworld’s growing population. Equallyimportant, this technology can helpsolve the world’s continuing healthproblems that remain linked to whatpeople eat.

Despite the promise of this tech-nology, some are so opposed to it thatthey use physical intimidation toattempt to stop research. While weabhor the methods of terrorists, it isour responsibility to assure thatknowledge gaps that feed their fearsdo not persist. We must explore thepotential of this new technology andalso must assess the risks associatedwith it.

The terms ‘genomics’ and ‘biotech-nology’ often are used interchangeably,but they have different meanings.Genomics research seeks to unlock thenature and function of genes. As welearn more about how information isstored by organisms and passed totheir progeny, we will possess theinformation necessary to improve thenutritional quality of our food andgrow crops and livestock in environ-mentally friendly ways. Applying thisknowledge of genomics to these endscan be described as biotechnology.

As scientists, we are proud of whatwe have learned about life and ourplanet during the past few decades,but we are humbled by constantreminders of how little we reallyknow. For instance, the microbial

processes of soil are critical to lifebeing sustained on land; yet, we prob-ably know fewer than 10 percent ofthe microbes that inhabit soil. Ourability to unravel the language of lifethrough genomics research willenlarge the peephole through whichwe are trying to understand life and itsprocesses.

The language of life contained inour DNA is a universal language, soknowledge of how genes function inhumans, mice, rice, or almonds oftenis interchangeable.

Our college has many facultyengaged in genomics research.Portions of Robbins Hall are slated tobecome home to an agricultural andenvironmental genomics facility thatwill allow us to cluster programs andcentralize equipment. Together, thecollege and the Division of BiologicalSciences are recruiting four new plantgenomics scientists to further stimu-late this area of research.

UC Davis has made significantcommitments and investments ingenomics research. A large genomicsbuilding will be erected near the med-ical sciences complex on the westernedge of campus. Although our collegewill have a relatively minor role in thisbuilding, we will benefit greatly fromthis campus investment.

The College of Agricultural andEnvironmental Sciences is planning anagricultural biotechnology researchcomplex on land adjacent to the PlantSciences Teaching Center. The aca-demic planning process of our collegeidentified agricultural and environ-mental genomics as one of its top tworesearch priorities, and these invest-ments in facilities and faculty assurethat UC Davis leads the world in theapplication of genomics research tosolve problems in agriculture and theenvironment.

UC Davis and the college areuniquely positioned to take the lead inapplication of genomics research. Our

historical strengths in genetics, pro-duction agriculture, and food and fiberresearch capabilities are unrivaled.

The recent move of USDA’sWestern Human Nutrition ResearchCenter to campus adds to our world-class nutrition and health programs.These and other similar partnershipswill help foster the research continu-um that we have among agricultureproduction, food processing and nutri-tion research.

Our considerable strength in eco-logical research also will play animportant role in assessing the poten-tial risks associated with the develop-ment of genetically unique crops andanimals.

Having a strong human scienceresearch capability in the collegeassures that we focus on the econom-ic, policy and social issues related todevelopment and adoption of the newtechnology that comes from ourgenomics research.

As in the past, UC Davis andCA&ES are committed to leading inthe discovery and development oftechnology that can benefit Californiaagriculture and the environment. Keyto the adoption of new technology isthe research to assess any risks thatthe technology presents. As a publicinstitution, it is our responsibility tocarefully examine both the benefitsand the potential risks of agriculturalbiotechnology. While some seek tostop such free inquiry by methods ofintimidation, they will not succeed instopping the discovery process.

The age-old field of genetics isundergoing a transformation. Newtechnology makes it possible toquickly break apart whole genomesand analyze thousands of genes atone time. Computers then make itpossible to map the order of thosegenes.

The tools of genomics analysisand bioinformatics together makepossible what once was thoughtimpossible -- unlocking not only thesequences but also the specific func-tions of genes for all plant and ani-mal species. Understanding both iskey. As one UC Davis researcherexplains, it is equivalent to knowingthe individual words in the sentenceand what the sentence says.

Discovering the genetic ‘sen-tences’ and their meanings for all theearth’s species is not likely withinour lifetimes, but it is likely formany of them. Small genetic differ-ences account for the entire range oforganisms that exist on our planet.The genetic sequence of one can fillin at least some of the holes in thegenetic sequence of another. Theflood of new knowledge about genes,how they are influenced and whatthey do could be leading us into anew social revolution.

MartinaMcGloughlin,director of the UCDavis Biotechnol-ogy Program andthe UC system-wide Life SciencesInformation

Program, says “changes that willhave effects comparable to those ofthe Industrial Revolution are nowbeginning.” While this new revolu-tion is still in its infancy – “we’reworking on the functions of genesone gene at a time” – the discoveryprocess is definitely speeding up.

Outcomes of that discoveryprocess touch every corner of ourculture, including advances in themanagement, quality, safety andunderstanding of our agriculture andenvironment. The College ofAgricultural and EnvironmentalSciences is contributing significantlyto these advances.

Researchers throughout the college are involved in the full rangeof genomics discovery and theirapplications, including marker-assist-ed selection, transgenics, geneticmodification and cloning. Some pos-sible outcomes of their inquiries arepesticide-free, wrinkle-free cotton,cleaner groundwater, healthier cow’smilk and the increased availability oforgans for human transplant.

To enlighten you on the scope ofthe college’s uses of and contributionsto genomics tools and knowledge,here is an overview of some of ourfaculty’s current research -- and howthat research can improve our lives.

Reducing Pesticide UseThe SeedBiotechnologyCenter supportsthe fundamentalrole of seeds asgenetic deliverysystems for agri-culture. Kent

Bradford, center director and professor in the Department of Vege-table Crops, notes that biotechnolo-gy techniques can be applied in conjunction with standard breedingtechniques to speed the incorpora-tion of specific beneficial traits intocrop plants. In addition, biotechnol-ogy allows traits to be moved amongspecies that otherwise would not beable to cross.

According to Bradford, protectionfrom pests and diseases will be deliv-ered to farmers increasingly throughgenetically improved seeds rather

than through pesticide applications.This is much like how humans relyon vaccinations whenever possible toprevent disease, instead of trying tocure disease once it occurs.

The nutritional quality and valueof fruits and seeds also can beenhanced by biotechnology. There-fore, as a delivery system and com-modity, seeds are key components intransferring the benefits of biotech-nology to farmers and consumers.

Supporting DevelopingNations

Professor PaulGepts, Departmentof Agronomy andRange Science, isinterested in whybean seeds inMexico contain aprotein that is nat-

urally toxic to the destructive seedweevil, while its wild ancestor in theAndes does not. His goal is to identi-fy the specific genes that express theprotein, then encourage their expres-sion in similar bean crops.

Gepts’ research is significant formany reasons. It aids our under-standing of how the same crop canevolve differently in separate loca-tions. It is another example of howgenetics can reduce reliance on pes-ticides. And it is extremely impor-tant for people in developing nationswho rely on bean crops but do nothave resources for the safest methodsof food storage.

Making Cotton Even BetterOur most popular clothing fabric isbecoming even better. Thea Wilkins,associate professor, Department ofAgronomy and Range Science, islooking at the genetic basis of cottonin existing and evolutionary con-texts. The goals are first to find outhow specific cotton genes areexpressed in different growing condi-

tions and then use the informationto support selective plant breedingprocesses. California, which alreadyproduces a highly valued crop andgrows 20 to 23 percent of the coun-try’s cotton, could then grow cottonwith longer, stronger yarns for aneven higher quality textile product.Given the speed current technologiesbring to the process, Wilkins pre-dicts that wrinkle-free and naturallycolored cottons are not far behind.

Developing Unique Databases

Professor BruceHammock of theDepartment ofEntomology thinksUC Davis’ leader-ship in genomicscan be significant,especially if the

broadest range of data is available. Hammock is participating on a

committee to develop the campus-wide infrastructure necessary for a‘technology center’ of databases ongenetic expression in its entirety -from DNA to proteins to metabolitesto phenotypes. According to Ham-mock, extensive information is avail-able on the structural gene level, butbuilding knowledge beyond that iswhere the campus can make a uniquecontribution.

In addition to his commitment toinformation sharing and a broaderapproach to genomics, his own stud-ies have assisted pest-control efforts.His lab is conducting research ongenetically engineered viruses thattarget crop-hungry caterpillars,essentially using biological insecti-cides in place of chemical pesticides.

Cloning and XenotransplantationThe Department of Animal Scienceworks in many areas of genomics,including the disruption or modifica-tion of gene expression in order toproduce a genetically refined animal.This may seem relatively common,since there is a 20-year history ofdoing this with mice. However, pro-

fessor and depart-ment chair GaryAnderson advisesthat the campuswas awarded apatent for modify-ing cells - theembryonic germ

cells in pigs - in species other thanthe mouse. “The significance isgreat, since altering these cells is thefirst step toward producing pigs withorgans that can be used in humantransplants,” Anderson said.

Another area is cloning, muchlike Dolly the sheep but with cattle.This summer department researchersattempted one of the first clonedcows. According to Anderson, veryfew universities are doing this, withUC Davis the first in the WesternUnited States. Anderson adds thatcloning is the best hope for savinganimal breeds that may otherwisedisappear due to losses in geneticdiversity or breeding competency.

In collaboration with ProfessorJames Murray and professionalresearcher Elizabeth Maga, Andersonis working on developing cows thatproduce healthier milk by introduc-ing the anti-microbial protein foundin human milk. The team has

accomplished thiswith mice andgoats; the nextstep is to intro-duce the generesponsible forthe beneficial pro-tein to cows. This

improves the milk that humans consume and also could decreaseantibiotic use in dairy cows, sincethe protein may reduce the occur-rence of mammory gland infections.

Helping horses – and humans,Murray also is working with AnnBowling, executive associate directorof the Veterinary Genetics Laboratoryin the School of Veterinary Medicine,to produce a genetic map of thehorse. This has a comparative benefitto human genomics, since, accordingto Murray, “big pieces of horse chro-mosomes are in the same order ashuman chromosomes. The horse is amedically important model.”

Their work also has relevance forthe country’s $25 billion horseindustry. A gene that causes a condi-tion known as hyperkalemic periodicparalysis (HYPP) – resulting inparalysis in quarter horses – is nowidentified and breeders can selectagainst it. “We can predict the muta-

tion and do something about it,”says Murray.

The HYPP discovery also showshow comparative genomics worksboth ways, since it was based oninformation derived from geneticresearch on a similar human disorder.

Improving Dairy ProductionProfessor JuanMedrano, Depart-ment of AnimalScience, is usinggenomics to studyspecific genetictraits. His inter-ests focus on two

distinct areas: animal growth andmilk composition.

Using mice, Medrano is lookingat a mutation that increases growthrate and body size. The applicationsof his research are numerous. Forinstance, understanding how tomanipulate growth can lead to thedevelopment of domestic animalsthat grow and utilize food more effi-ciently. In human medicine, thisunderstanding may lead to strategiesfor treating growth disorders.

Collaborating with animal scienceprofessor Edward DePeters, Medranois studying how to select and breeddairy cattle for higher content ofcasein, the protein that increasesmilk solids and cheese yield.Processors could produce five toeight percent more cheese fromselected cows, resulting in large economic benefits without alteringquality. Similar techniques are beingexamined to breed cows that producemilk with a higher concentration ofunsaturated fatty acids, resulting in ahealthier and softer butter.

Preserving Fish PopulationsGenomics also hasan important rolein wildlife conser-vation. ProfessorBernie May,Department ofAnimal Science,uses it to unlock

the genetic life history of certainaquatic populations. That history

can tell him if those populationshave reached a point of low geneticvariability due to inbreeding, makingthem prone to disease and evenextinction. “Genomic variation isimportant to long-term species sur-vival. You can’t rebuild it if you loseit,” says May.

His work has many applications.The white sturgeon, for instance, is asource of caviar, a delicacy importantto the food industry. The blue whaleis of interest to ocean ecologistsseeking to influence regulation of thewhale hunting industry. The goldentrout has special relevance toCalifornians interested in preservingstate fish.

In two current studies, May islooking at whether or not humanintervention results in the hybridiza-tion of two species - one endangeredand one more common. The Modoc(endangered) and Sacramento suck-ers in the Pitt River drainage and theOwens (endangered) and Lahontantui chubs in Owens River drainagenow overlap in their distributions.“We could be losing one speciescompletely and creating somethingelse,” he says. Results of these stud-ies could alter the management ofCalifornia’s state waterways.

Improving Groundwater and Air Quality

Kate Scow, profes-sor in the Depart-ment of Land, Airand WaterResources, isdetermined to getthe toxic fueladditive MTBE

out of our groundwater. At one con-taminated site, she added a bacteri-um isolated from compost that rap-idly breaks down MTBE. At anothersite, she is studying the naturallyoccurring organisms that breakdown MTBE, then creating condi-tions that encourage those organismsto thrive. Using DNA sequencingtechniques, she can tell if the addedorganism survives, and she learnsabout the composition of naturallyoccurring microbial communities.

The same techniques aid anotherof Scow’s concerns - dust. She isinterested in the airborne dust thatcontributes to disease and reducesair quality. As in forensics, ‘finger-prints’ of potential sources of thisdust (from soil, feedlots and roadsfor instance) are taken by sequenc-ing the DNA of microorganisms living in these materials. The finger-prints then are compared to dust fingerprints to help identify wherethey came from. Scow’s analyses areimportant to regulatory agenciesresponsible for controlling thesources of harmful dust.

Treating, Preventing DiseaseThe next decadeholds manyopportunities for our under-standing of nutrition, and thatunderstanding ispowered by

genetic advances. Carl Keen, professor and chair of

the Department of Nutrition, is aspecialist on how nutrients influenceembryonic and fetal development.His work also addresses the interac-tions among genetics, nutrition anda number of health concerns inadults, including cardiovascular dis-ease, hypertension and diabetes. Ithas been understood for a while thatthere are genetic predispositions tothese conditions.

According to Keen, we now canbetter understand these predisposi-tions in terms of nutritional triggers.Understanding these triggers pro-vides new insights into disease treat-ment and prevention. “In the nearfuture, we should be able to begin todefine how select genes can be influ-enced by subtle changes in diet.”

Keen adds that the union ofgenomics and nutrition opens thedoors to understanding disease onan individual level. There may be atime when physicians can developgenetic profiles and recommendnutritional programs for eachpatient. “No longer will diet advicebe about what the public should do,

but about what each individualshould do,” Keen says.

Understanding ConsumerAttitudesWhere does thepublic receive scientific informa-tion? What infor-mation do theytrust? How dothey perceive thebenefits? These

are some of the questions that con-cern Christine Bruhn, food market-ing specialist in the Department ofFood Science and Technology anddirector of the Center for ConsumerResearch. Bruhn is dedicated toensuring that the public receivesuseful and accurate informationabout biotechnology, including itsfull benefits and potential risks.

Bruhn explains that studies showa decreased acceptance of technology

in California, due in part to howsome media reports have focused onharms that can be misrepresented oroverstated. However, the public isnow asking very good questionsabout biotechnology and food safety,which Bruhn encourages. She iscommitted to ongoing and meaning-ful “dialogue between scientists andthe public.”

“Scientists should talk aboutwhat they do and the social out-comes,” Bruhn says. “We need totalk about the questions that newtechnology raises and compare themto current practices, like the use ofbroad-spectrum pesticides.”

Bruhn facilitates this dialogue inpart through a Web site on genomicsresearch and issues. Take a look athttp://ccr.ucdavis.edu. She also isinvolved in consumer research andeducation to ensure that food labelstatements are truthful and not misleading.

ConclusionWhile this overview does not repre-sent the college’s genomics work inits entirety, it does represent therange and likely benefits of ourresearch in this area. A month fromnow, even a week from now, thescope of that research may be evengreater, given how quickly geneticinformation is being compiled.

McGloughlin says that “the post-genome era in biological researchwill take for granted ready access tohuge amounts of genomic data. Thechallenge will be understandingthose data and using the understand-ing to solve real-world problems.”

The college is clearly committedto that challenge.

Two new positions have been created inthe CA&ES Dean’s Office to supportrecruitment and outreach efforts.

DeeDee Kitter-man came to theDean’s Office inJuly to fill theredefined positionof executive direc-tor, research andoutreach pro-grams. She previ-

ously served as management servicesofficer in the Department ofEntomology.

“Opportunities were being missedin the college because there wasn’t aperson to keep all the balls in theair,” Kitterman said. “My job is tokeep all the balls in the air!”

Kitterman’s responsibility fallsinto three primary areas:

1. Provide analysis and leadershipin developing partnerships amongthe college, DANR - the Division ofAgriculture and Natural Resources,targeted clientele, and industry andcommodity groups.

2. Provide leadership for coordi-nation of research initiatives, datamanagement and research collaboration through centers.

3. Provide management oversightand expertise for administrative andcomputing resources and functions ofthe Dean’s Office, including steamlin-ing processes and initiating changes.

Kitterman brings a strong institu-tional memory to her new position.She has worked on campus 23 years,the last 15 years in entomology.Previously, she worked in theDepartment of Land, Air and WaterResources and in VeterinaryPharmocology and Toxicology.

“I’m excited about this positionbecause of the broad scope of activi-ty,” Kitterman said. “It’s enticing,exciting and definitely challenging.”

Kitterman describes her style as‘open door,’ hoping that others willinvolve her so that can assist with

their projects. “I like the feeling ofbeing a part of the finished product,”she explains. “I like making thingshappen.”

Kitterman has been active in col-lege and campus-wide committeesfor many years. When she isn’t atwork, she is home with her husbandon 23 acres outside Winters wherethey raise navel oranges. Kittermanwas born and raised on a farm inNorth Central Illinois, so farming iscomfortable to her.

Richard Engel(’90, AgriculturalEducation; ’91,EducationCredential) joinedthe Dean’s Officein July as directorof student recruit-ment and out-

reach. He came to the college fromthe California Foundation forAgriculture in the Classroom where,for five years, his work focused onagricultural literacy programsthroughout the state.

A native of Bishop, California, Engel taught agriculture at Wood-land High School before beingrecruited to run a farmer/ranchereducation program for the YoloCounty Resource ConservationDistrict.

Today, Engel and his wife live inWoodland with their two sons, agestwo and four. He is a member ofClass XXVIII of the CaliforniaAgricultural Leadership Program, amember of the board of directors ofAlpha Gamma Rho and an associatedirector of Yolo County ResourceConservation District. He has bigplans for his new position.

“In terms of recruitment,” Engelsaid, “I will determine the needs of

our departments and what recruit-ment programs they have in place. Iplan to utilize a portion of our schol-arship pool to recruit the top incom-ing and transfer students and willwork closely with the four other agri-cultural and environmental collegesin California, doing my best to keepthe top students in agricultural andenvironmental studies - regardless ofwhat campus they attend.”

Engel plans to broaden the AggieAmbassador Program, maximizingpeer relationships as a recruitmenttool, and utilize the college’s alumninetwork to find quality students.He’ll work closely with industry contacts through California’s 53 coun-ty Farm Bureaus to identify top agri-cultural and environmental students.

Engel also will assist in rebuildingthe Agricultural Education Programwithin the Division of Education andwill spearhead efforts in the Dean’sOffice to direct the Summer ScienceInstitute. He believes the collegeshould be playing a role in providingM.S. and Ph.D. programs in agricul-tural education.

“Most students leave California toget their degrees in Ag Ed,” Engelsaid. “I believe the campus shouldtake a leadership role in curriculumdevelopment for agricultural educa-tion, as well as in-service and pre-service for teachers.

“I want to let students in bothpublic and private schools aroundthe state know about opportunities inthe College of Agricultural andEnvironmental Sciences,” Engel said.“I’ll work with recruiters and coun-selors on high school and junior col-lege campuses. I want to do a goodjob of linking with the educationalsector and with the general public.”

Olsen Scores...EveryoneWins!By Rick Swantz

On May 22, 2000, quarterback MelOlsen threw a short pass to teamcaptain Dave Hills to cap a seven-year scoring drive that put the JoeA. Heidrick, Sr. Western Center forAgricultural Equipment fund-raisingcampaign in the end zone. Olsen’spass enables the Department ofBiological and Agricultural Engine-ering to start classes in the 18,000-square-foot structure this fall.

Located on 40 acres near theintersection of Hutchison Drive andHighway 113, the center will accom-modate teaching, research andextension activities associated withthe mission of the department.

Indoor teaching related to the latest advances in field equipmentfollowed by field demonstrations,will be provided to students, grow-ers, farm advisors and industry personnel. A wing of the center willbe devoted to the equipment indus-try for conducting service and salestraining of dealer personnel.

At times, the offense stalled; butbig plays from several All-Stars ledto eventual victory.

In the first half, fans formed anoutside charitable trust for fundingconstruction of the facility.Engineering staff developed the construction drawings; then a consortium of contractors beganconstruction of the facility usingfunds from the charitable trust,donated labor and building materi-als at trade prices.

After the kickoff, the family ofJoe A. Heidrick, Sr. ran for a biggain with the naming opportunity

for the entire building. The New Holland Equipment

Company tackled the demonstrationlab, the Far Western EquipmentDealers pounced on the trainingwing while the Regnar and BeverlyPaulsen Foundation ran interferencefor the lecture room.

As the clock was running downfor the begining of this school year atUC Davis, it was Olsen - with thepass protection of his fellow mem-bers of the Alpha Gamma Rho frater-nity - who made the deciding play. Inrecognition of Mel’s generous contri-bution of $100,000, the teaching lab-oratory at the WCAE will be namedthe Mel and Dorothy Olsen/AlphaGamma Rho Teaching Laboratory.

Olsen has a long association withthe Davis Alpha Gamma Rho alumnichapter and recently received thegroup’s Alumni Achievement Award.

Olsen attended UC Davis in the1930s and completed a two-year certificate in the Dairy Industries Program. This course of studyallowed him a good deal of latitudein the career course he took, and heattributes the skills gained in his general education at Davis for hissuccessful career as a state sanitarian.

Commenting on the impressiveoutcome of this campaign, Neal VanAlfen, dean of the College of Agri-cultural and Environmental Sciences,commented: “This is a great victoryfor everyone involved. How nice tohave Mel throw a perfect spiral toend this campaign. GO AGS!”

* The disposition of the Kay A.Devine Trust Estate includes a gift ofover $80,000 to the College ofAgricultural and EnvironmentalSciences to establish the Kay A.Devine Fund. The fund will be usedto advance, support and maintainthe Equine Teaching and ResearchProgram in the Department ofAnimal Science.

* Raindrip, Inc. donated drip irrigation products valued at over$46,000 to the Department ofBiological and AgriculturalEngineering for use at the Joe A.Heidrick, Sr. Western Center forAgricultural Equipment, the UCDavis Arboretum and at other areason campus.

* When Albert DeFreitas passedaway last December, his attorneynotified the university that 20 per-cent of the residue of his estate wasleft “to the School of Agriculture atthe University of California, Davis,for research in tomatoes or dairy sci-ence.” He also provided for scholar-ships for Hilmar High School gradu-ating seniors majoring in engineer-ing at any California college and forresearch in diabetes or heart disease.

DeFreitas’ gift exceeded $40,000.

* Professor emeritus Robert Labenand his wife Dorothy contributed$10,000 to establish the Departmentof Animal Science UndergraduateEducational Enhancement Fund.Income from the fund will be usedto help students participate ininternships, special meetings, programs or activities supplementalto their regular academic program.

The UC Davis Arboretum won alandslide victory over other propos-als submitted by the Senior GiftCommittee for the coveted UCDavis Class of 2000 Senior Gift.The Arboretum’s proposal outlinedrestoration of the T. Elliot WeierRedwood Grove alongside PutahCreek on the south end of campus.

The gift, provided solely by con-tributions from the class of 2000, isexpected to exceed $25,000. It willbe spent on planting more red-woods, upgrading the grove’s irriga-tion system and improving paths.

Arboretum director KathleenSocolofsky said, “The Arboretum isreally honored. The gift makes usfeel like an important part of stu-dents’ lives.”

Nearly 4000 seniors participatedin the election.

In my first week on campus, I wasasked at least a dozen times why adirector of student recruitment andoutreach position was established ata time when the level of competitionfor admission is at an historic high.My response is simple.

With fewer resources available tothe College of Agricultural andEnvironmental Sciences and areduced number of incoming andtransfer openings available to ourrecruits, we must work harder thanever to expand our applicant pool inorder to maintain the diversity andlevel of academic excellence that ourcollege has come to expect.

My job in student recruitment isto create a map of CA&ES character-istics that will help attract top stu-dents into our 40 majors. As alumniand friends of the college, you are animportant part of this map.

During my undergraduate yearsas a member of Alpha Gamma Rho(AGR) fraternity here at UC Davis,our alumni repeatedly stressed,“Recruitment is the lifeblood of ourorganization.” Many students joinedAGR as a direct result of alumni con-tact and referrals.

We need that same help to identi-fy and contact potential students forthe college.

Through referrals, participationin Cal Aggie Alumni Association(CAAA) student receptions and UCDavis Decision Day, you can assist us

in linking the programs and opportu-nities available through CA&ES withCalifornia’s outstanding secondaryand community college students.

My goal is to identify studentsearly in their junior high and highschool careers to assist them in meet-ing UC admissions requirements andprovide students and their parentsinformation about UC Davis.

Here are some of the recruitmenttools we use to maintain our base oftalented incoming students.

ScholarshipsThe college awarded over $1.2 mil-lion in scholarships during the 1999-2000 academic year. In addition,many departments have scholarshipsavailable for incoming students. I willwork with the scholarship office andour departments to develop a planfor sharing scholarship informationwith students interested in applyingto UC Davis.

Outreach EventsNumerous opportunities existeach year - such as conferences,teacher in-services, and educationaland recreational events - to promotethe programs available in the college’senvironmental, human and agricultur-al science divisions. I will work witheach of the divisions to match recruit-ment opportunities with faculty andstaff interests.

A seminar titled“Genetic Engineering: The Promise,Practice and Controversy” providedteachers practical laboratory skills inDNA extraction, restriction enzymeanalysis and bacterial transforma-tion. Teachers gained insight intointegrating practical skills and ethi-cal-issue discussions of genetic engi-neering into high school classrooms.

In a separate project, Rousso’s“Turned Inside Out #2” was acceptedinto Basketry Turning Points: TheFuture Contains the Past atConvergence 2000 Cincinnati. Thepiece, inspired by her research trip toNew Zealand, is a twined raffia bas-

ket lined with porcupine quills. Herpaper, “Betel Nut, Beads and Beliefsin Atoni Society,” was accepted forpublication in Arts of Asia magazine.

Design studentMary Testareceived a $500scholarship fromthe SacramentoChapter for theTextile Arts. Whilefinishing her stud-

ies and cramming for finals justbefore commencement last June, sheworked as a student intern in theDean’s Office, helping to keep thecollege’s Web site up-to-date andassisting in designing new pages.

Testa entered the MFA program intextile arts and costume design inSeptember.

Michelle MarieLeinfelder wasselected by theboard of the Cali-fornia Chapter,American Societyof Agronomy toreceive a $500

scholarship. She was selected for“work in agriculture, an essay, anddemonstrated leadership andextracurricular activities.”

Leinfelder is a fourth-year cropscience and management major, along-distance runner on the UCDavis Track Team and team captain,as well as a peer adviser.

Leinfelder was Block and BridleClub treasurer, Aggie Ambassadorsvice president, Dean’s StudentAdvisory Committee member andIndividual Major Committee tabula-tions coordinator for Agricultural andEnvironmental Science Field Day.

Michael Chan and Rungsinee“Pearl” Sothomvit won first and second place, respectively, in thePackaging Division Student PaperCompetition at the recent Institute ofFood Science and Technology (IFT)meeting in Dallas.

In a weekly gardening program, 30 fourth-grade students from Pioneer ElementarySchool in Davis learned about soils, plants, soil animals and composting from MarjaKoivunen, graduate student in soils from Finland and volunteer ‘garden parent.’When she brought the students to campus on a field trip, it was the culmination of aproblem-solving activity to find out ...“What is wrong with the soil?”

There is one spot in the elementary school garden where it was difficult to growplants. Students took soil samples and made hypotheses about possible reasonsplants in that area might die. When they visited a lab in the Department of Land,Air and Water Resources, they had a chance to do hands-on science. They tested theproblem soil in a real soil science laboratory. And they were thrilled!

Under Koivunen’s direction, the nine-year-olds looked at soil texture and color,measured pH, electrical conductivity and the soil nitrogen content. Based on theresults, the group will continue its problem-solving activities and hopes to find aremedy for the soil.

“Everyone in this group - students, parents and teachers - enjoyed the visit toHoagland Hall,” said Koivunen. “The kids learned a lot. They learned that soils aremuch more than dirt!”

Landon Scarlett isn’t a typicalstudent. By the time she came toUC Davis, she’d already earnedbachelor’s and master’s degrees inart history and an M.B.A. Sheworked toward her M.B.A. whileworking full time.

Following graduation, Scarlettworked in horticultural display gar-dens for DuPont and later as direc-tor of the Dallas Arboretum for fiveyears. She reached a point in hercareer where she wanted to dosomething outside gardening, nurs-ery work and horticulture. Sheasked herself: “What do I want todo more than anything else?”

She decided that she wanted tohave a small vineyard on a hillsidewith a nice house and a lovely view.Therefore, she reasoned, she need-ed to find out about vineyards.

Scarlett was living in Nashvilleand decided to come to UC Davisbecause she heard it had the bestclasses in viticulture and enology of

any school in the country. Did she write letters and

arrange appointments? No. Did she make phone calls and

set up contacts for her visit? No.Scarlett just traveled to Davis

and went to the Department ofViticulture and Enology. She foundassociate professor Andrew Walkerand, after they talked about hergoals and the possibilities beforeher, she made a plan. She returnedto Nashville and enrolled in back-ground courses at the University of Tennessee. Later she transferred toUC Davis, and her husband trans-ferred to his company’s Sacramentooffice. She spent a year workingwith a grape farm advisor inMendocino County, doing winegrape variety trials.

“This is the most fun I’ve everhad when it comes to education,”Scarlett said. “I didn’t really knowhow to study, how to concentrateor how to prioritize my work thefirst time I went to college. I camehere with a wonderful educationand lots of experience behind me.”

Scarlett couldn’t say enoughabout her mentor. “Andy Walkerhas been wonderful. He is passion-ate and enthusiastic about hiswork, and he didn’t burden mewith junk. He’s a fabulous teacher.”

Asked what she would like people to understand about her as are-entry student, she replied, “I amnot a natural student. I workedvery, very hard at Davis. Some peo-ple believe that it was easierbecause I’m older. That’s not so.

“The other thing is that I’mgrateful for all the support I’ve got-ten here. I’ve had a good time.”

Smith is completing a thesisexamining the biological and eco-nomic implications of marinereserves.

Animal science major Kelly Templinis recipient of the Alpha ZetaFreshman Award recognizing themost outstanding freshman studentbased on demonstrated excellence inscholarship, leadership, and campusand community activities.

Templin attended Boston LatinSchool from seventh to twelfth grade.She came to California to attend UCDavis and begin a path leadingtoward a Ph.D. degree in animalbehavior. She hopes to have a equineveterinary practice.

Gwain Evans, former student assis-tant in the Dean’s Office, received theJC Penney Golden Rule Award forwork with Court-appointed SpecialAdvocates (CASA) in Woodland. Shewas selected because of her workwith two young sisters who lived inseparate foster homes. Evans madecertain the sisters saw one anotherand maintained a strong bond.According to a program coordinator,volunteers usually take on only oneyoung person at a time.

The Undergraduate AcademicPrograms (UAP) unit functions as thehub of academic advising for stu-dents in the College of Agriculturaland Environmental Sciences. It is thecentral contact for college faculty onmatters pertaining to curriculardevelopment, college executive andadvisory committees, for otherundergraduate units on the campusand for all student affairs offices.

UAP staff include the associatedean, executive assistant to the associate dean, office manager, fivecounselors, two counseling assistants,staff assistant to the college ExecutiveCommittee and its sub-committees,outreach program coordinator, college graduation coordinator andstudent peer advisers and assistants.

UAP counselors provide informa-tion about college/campus require-ments; specific knowledge on univer-sity-wide or campus procedures/regu-lations, petitions and deadlines;advice on scheduling of classes; guid-ance concerning academic perform-ance; and referrals to campus servicesfor personal situations affecting aca-demic performance. Quick, front-lineservice is available from two front-counter counseling assistants andstudent peer advisers, or a private,30-minute session may be requested.

The UAP unit interacts with de-partmental advising associates andmaster advisers from the departmentsand the Dean’s Office through an e-mail bulletin board, CAESCounselors, monthly meetings andthe CA&ES Fall AdvisingConference.

Counselors also have specificresponsibilities related to undergrad-uates or graduate students:u Coordination of Exploratory pro-grams for students who have notchosen a majoru Coordination of degree certificationu Coordination of summer advisingfor transfer students, freshmen andparents

u Support for transfer students fromcommunity colleges and other four-year institutionsu Support for students seeking a sec-ond baccalaureate and those over 25years of age re-entering the collegeu Engagement of students in equalopportunity programs u Maintenance of undergraduate andgraduate scholarships

Counselors often confer with cam-pus personnel who can aid in ongo-ing, successful management of theirspecific college responsibilities. Theyparticipate in the annual advisingconferences for UC Davis and for theUC system.

The unit keeps abreast of presentinterpretations of old and new poli-cies and helps establish general cam-pus policy relevant to undergraduateacademic programs.

The associate dean and/or officemanager meet regularly with associatedeans/assistant deans of the Collegeof Letters and Science; School ofEngineering and Division ofBiological Sciences; the vice provostof undergraduate studies; the vicechancellor of student affairs and student affairs office personnel.

The associate dean often meetswith counterparts of the western andnational academic programs sectionsof the National Association of StateUniversities and Land Grant Colleges.

Several CA&ES ExecutiveCommittee sub-committee memberswork closely with the UAP unit aspart of the college’s teaching andresearch mission. For example, theMajors and Courses Subcommitteeapproves/reviews all majors andcourses for the college and seeksinput on college regulations/policiesand emerging trends.

The Graduate Education Subcom-mittee works extensively with theunit to clarify policies surroundingdistribution of the Jastro-ShieldsAwards to graduate research assistants.

The Teaching WorkloadCommittee recently participated withthe associate dean in developing rec-

ommended principles, policies andguidelines for instructional workloadin the college.

In keeping with its commitmentto help educate various segments ofCalifornia’s population, the collegesupports outreach programs forpotential and actual undergraduates.

Two college programs are coordi-nated in the UAP unit. The JuniorAcademic Science Research Achieve-ment Program (JASRAP) andCollegiate Academic PreparatoryScience Research AchievementProgram (CAPSRAP) are summerresearch experiences for high schoolstudents.

A related activity, the SummerUndergraduate Program for Researchin Science and Engineering, seeks tointroduce undergraduates from UCDavis and state/national institutionsto the full range of research opportu-nities, including those in the agricul-tural and environmental sciences.

In addition, the unit particpates incampus outreach events such asPreview Day, Get Acquainted Day, UCDavis Welcome and spring tours.

Coordination of commencementbegins in late February and culmi-nates in June. Over 1,200 studentsand approximately 12,000 familymembers and friends attended twocommencement celebrations in 2000.

Following commencement, unitpersonnel prepare for summer advis-ing of incoming transfer students andfreshmen and look forward to a newacademic year.

Peter Meserve is a presidentialresearch professor at Northern IllinoisUniversity, studying the ecology andbiogeography of mammals with astrong emphasis in temperate SouthAmerica. He has been working inChile since 1974.

Currently, Meserve and DouglasKelt, associate professor, Departmentof Wildlife, Fish and ConservationBiology, are collaborating withChilean ecologist Julio Gutierrez on along-term study of an arid region inNorthern Chile. Meserve andGutierrez began the project 11 yearsago; Kelt joined the project in 1998.

The trio is assessing the relativeimportance of biotic and abiotic fac-tors on small mammal and plantecology. Because of ongoing interac-tions in Chile with Kelt, Meserveselected Davis as a home for hiswork. He spent three months oncampus, and they produced one synthetic manuscript that they willsubmit for publication.

“Visiting scholars clearly are animportant and fundamental facet ofuniversity life,” said Kelt. “We are inthe business of sharing and extendingknowledge, and it is via interactionswith colleagues - both near and far -that such interactions are best pur-sued. Although UC Davis revels in thetremendous number and diversity ofits academic faculty, no university cancover all bases.

“As a geographical ecologist withextensive field experience, Peter’spresence was useful. My graduate stu-dents benefited by his presence duringlab meetings when he contributedanother seasoned approach to ongo-ing research. Peter has a broad back-ground that provided useful insights.”

Jung-Sup Choiarrived at UCDavis from theKorea RuralEconomic Instituteas a FulbrightFellow to workwith Daniel A.

Sumner, professor, Department ofAgricultural and ResourceEconomics. They met at several aca-demic meetings and found that theyshared research interests in agricultur-al policy, trade and rice.

During his two-year stay, Choiworked with Sumner on severalresearch projects in the areas of trade,exotic pests and the economics ofresearch. On several occasions, otherCA&ES faculty worked with them.Choi sat in on graduate classes, updat-ing his knowledge and developing aclose relationship with faculty and

graduate students. At several academ-ic meetings held in the U.S., Choisuccessfully represented both UCDavis and his institute in Korea.

Reflecting on his time here, Choisaid, “I think I spent a productivestay. Professor Sumner did the keyrole, connecting me to UC. Throughhim, it was possible to establish aninternational network of faculty andgraduate students. We have accom-plished [several] projects and nowhave a long-term research plan. Ihope to have a chance to pay backwhat I owe to UC.”

Hiroshi Hasegawa from Japan andImma Farre from Spain successfullyapplied for grants from their homegovernments to work for two yearswith Long-Term Research on Agricul-tural Systems Facility (LTRAS).

CA&ES Visiting Scholars

The laboratory of Professor Michael Reid in the Department of EnvironmentalHorticulture has frequently hosted visiting scholars who, Reid said, “add a multicul-tural dimension to the department and the laboratory and often are the best andbrightest minds from their home countries.”

According to Reid, “The value to us of having visiting scholars here lies not only inthe opportunity to work with bright and energetic scholars from around the world butalso in the chance to provide them with skills they can use to improve agricultural pro-duction in their home countries.”

Don Hunter arrived at UC Davis from New Zealand in early 1999. AntonioFerrante arrived from Italy in January 2000, and Mohamed Abd Allah Eraki arrivedfrom Egypt in March 2000. “These scholars came to campus because of the reputationof the college and its postharvest program,” Reid said.

Reid believes that the postharvest ornamentals program is enriched by scholars’research and background and hopes that their experience at Davis expands their scien-tific horizons.

Shinji Shimada of Japan spenteight months researching legume nod-ule physiology in Denison’s laboratory.Their research was featured on thecover of the Journal of ExperimentalBotany. The following year, Shimadaobtained funding for an exchangevisit, so Denison spent a week lectur-ing and visiting laboratories inTsukuba, Japan.

Graduate student Marinda Visser camefrom South Africa to work for one yearin the laboratory of Professor ThomasGordon, Department of PlantPathology.

Five visiting scholars are working inthe lab of Clarence Kado,Department of Plant Pathology.

Kenji Terashima of Toyota City,Japan, is studying novel delivery sys-tems in the biological control of plantroot diseases; Naima Bouhouche ofMorocco is a postdoctoral visitingscholar studying the application of anovel gene for controlling crown galldisease; Laurence Leloup of Paris,France, is studying the application ofnovel genes useful in promotingtransformation; Helen Rawsthorne of

Norwich, U.K., is studying the designof novel gene exchange vectors forgram-positive bacteria; and Shaw-JyeWu of Taipei, Taiwan, is working onmicrobial array technologies.

In 1999, Professor Marian McKennacame to the 4-H Center for YouthDevelopment as a visiting scholar.While here, she worked withCooperative Extension specialist anddirector Richard Ponzio and his staff.She shared her research findings onthe impacts of academic service learn-ing, wrote a monograph published bythe center and presented a workshopat the California 4-H annual meeting.

Ponzio became familiar withMcKenna’s work through theNorthern Rocky MountainEducational Research Association. Hewanted to incorporate some of theprinciples of her work into the 4-HCenter at Davis, so he invited her towork at the center.

McKenna and Ponzio worked on amodel for incorporating academicservice learning into non-educationalsettings for students thinking of enter-ing fields in addition to education.They are continuing investigation intothe impacts of various models to dothis and to disseminate findings tointerested agencies and communities.

“I cannot begin to tell you howmuch I enjoyed my time on the UCDavis campus,” McKenna wrote. “Thestaff and students with whom I inter-acted were absolutely wonderful!They were kind, supportive, intelli-gent and interested.”

McKenna taught one session onthe use of Ethnograph software forqualitative research methods anddeveloped a collaborative projectbetween UC Davis and UC Berkeley.

“I am very grateful for the oppor-tunity to work at the 4-H Center forYouth Development at UC Davis,” shesaid. “It has inspired my research withmy community and students. It is myhope that I have contributed some-thing to the dynamic work being doneat the center. I look forward to areturn visit.”

DistinguishedCanadian scientistDonald McKay vis-ited theDepartment ofEnvironmentalToxicology duringthe winter quarter.

Professor McKay is director of theEnvironmental Modeling Center atTrent University, Peterborough,Ontario. His primary research interestis the development, application, vali-dation and dissemination of mass bal-ance models describing the fate ofchemicals in the environment.

This is McKay’s second sabbaticalwith the department, and he regularlyvisits when he is in California.

On this visit, undergraduateslearned about environmental model-ing from McKay. He also delivered thekeynote address, “ManagingChemicals in the New Millennium,”before the meeting of the NorthernCalifornia Chapter of the Society ofEnvironmental Toxicology andChemistry.

McKay worked with professor anddepartment chair Marion Miller onthe development of a physiologicallybased pharmacokinetic model. Healso used his time to do the final edit-ing of the second edition of his book,Multimedia Environmental Models, andto write several papers.

“Having Dr. McKay visit ourdepartment was a real pleasure,” saidMiller. “He contributed to the depart-ment culture - not only because of hisexpertise - but because he brought afresh perspective to the role that envi-ronmental toxicology plays in dealingwith chemicals in the environment.

Reichman’s principal research areais related to chemical volatilizationfrom porous media. While at UCDavis, she is working on the collectionof field and laboratory data on thevolatilization of pesticides from soiland comparing model simulationswith the data.

The compa-ny wanted to form a collaborationwith UC Davis focused on tomato processing, one of its primary inter-ests. Recently, professor Kate Scowinvited Dr. Amos Hadas to the UCDavis campus to conduct jointresearch on vineyard soils in her lab.His interest in the physical attributesof terrior not only complementsScow’s interests but provides impor-tant data on a topic that virtually hasgone unexplored in California. LAWR assistant professor WilliamHorwath invited Senior scientist AvivaHadas of the Volcani Center, Instituteof Soil, Water & EnvironmentalSciences in Israel, to conduct researchin his laboratory for one year. Herinterest is in soil fertility evaluationsof organic amendments.

While on campus, her focus hasbeen studying the wetting propertiesof fibrous materials with non-ionicsurfactants and microemulsions. Thefirst paper generated from this collab-oration was presented at an interna-tional conference at Princeton in June.

Magda Lopez Barajas came to theDepartment of Viticulture andEnology from Barcelona, Spain. Sheworked with professor and Amerinechairholder Linda Bisson. Here is herstory in her own words:

“I always thought that it is verygood for every person to stay for atime outside of his/her own townbecause it opens the mind. Meetingdifferent people from different coun-tries-cultures shows that there areother good ways to think and towork, mainly when the new peopleyou meet think and work very well.

received the Outstanding YoungRange Professional Award at theSociety for Range Management’s53rd annual meeting in Boise,Idaho. The award was presented tothe member demonstrating extraor-dinary potential and promise as arange management professional.

Tate’s leadership rallied a team ofresearchers to focus on water qualityin grazed watersheds. His researchand education programs helped toresolve conflict in highly visiblewatersheds, resulting in changes inpractices on rangelands throughoutthe state and protecting the qualityof drinking water for millions ofurban Californians.

“We have been working on thisabout four years,” Famula said.“We’re currently at the stage of col-lecting mouth swabs from 500 dogswith and without epilepsy fromwhich we will extract DNA. We’reassembling pedigrees and genotyp-ing dogs at 103 microsatellite mark-ers. We’ll try to see if some DNAmarkers associate with the disease.That test of association is the heartof statistical genomics.”

faculty member to win the UC-wideConstantine Panunzio DistinguishedEmeriti Award given seven timesover the past 16 years. The awardrecognizes UC emeritus faculty forscholarship or educational service“of outstanding character” in anyyear following retirement.

An internationally recognizeddevelopment psychologist, Wernerspent a lifetime studying how chil-dren cope when confronted withadversity. Since her retirement, she

providing leadership and vision tothe discipline in insect nematology.

Kaya established insect nematol-ogy as a viable sub-discipline, giv-ing nematology a critical focal pointthat led to such breakthroughs asthe exemption of nematodes fromEPA registration. As the result of hisefforts, nematode pathogens ofinsects have been elevated to thesame status as protozoan and bacte-rial pathogens.

Professor Thomas Famula, Depart-ment of Animal Science, recentlyput together the college’s firstcourse on statistical genomics. Itbegins in spring 2001. Graduatestudents, undergraduate students inbiotechnology and statisticians areexpected to enroll.

In 1999, Werner publishedThrough the Eyes of Innocents:Children Witness World War II. Herbook, Reluctant Witnesses: Children’sVoices from the Civil War, wasreleased in paperback last year, andshe had six book chapters and onejournal article published or acceptedfor publication. Werner also present-ed six research papers at national orinternational conferences during1999.

Werner is a 1995 Award ofDistinction recipient.

Professor Thomas Adams, Depart-ment of Animal Science, was pre-sented the Distinguished TeachingAward by the campus division of theAcademic Senate. The award recog-nizes “remarkable teaching ability.”

A UC Davis faculty member for19 years, Adams teaches courses inreproductive physiology. His researchprogram focuses on reproductiveissues of livestock. According to Professor GaryAnderson, chair of the Departmentof Animal Science, Adams is thethird animal science faculty toreceive the award in as many years.Professor Edward DePetersreceived the award in 1998, andProfessor Thomas Famula received

the award in 1999. “Since recipients of the

Distinguished Teaching Award areselected campuswide, this speakswell of the importance that the col-lege and the department put onteaching,” said Anderson.

Associate professor Scott Rozelle,Department of Agricultural andResource Economics, was presentedthe Excellence in Economic andSector Award from The World Bankfor exemplary leadership and per-sonal contribution. Rozelle’s work

on the China Rural DevelopmentProject was selected from among100 projects completed during fiscalyear 1998-99 and noted for out-standing quality.

In presenting the award, SvenSandstrom, managing director ofThe World Bank, said, “...your per-sonal contribution has been identi-fied by your managers and col-leagues as having had a majorimpact. Your accomplishment setsan important example for your col-leagues...and demonstrates thathigh-quality [projects] can make amajor contribution toward helpingclients and stakeholders.”

Professor Christine Bruhn, directorof the Center for ConsumerResearch, Department of FoodScience and Technology, waskeynote speaker at the three-dayBritish Crop Protection Conferencein Brighton, England, attended by1,200 delegates. She presented the26th Bawden Lecture, making adetailed analysis of the differencesin North American and Europeanconsumer attitudes regardingbiotechnolgy and food productionand how these attitudes haveevolved. Bruhn believes that lack oftrust and misinformation are themain impediments to consumeracceptance of new technologies.

Bruhn encourages the scientificcommunity to increase communica-tion with non-scientists, especiallyconsumers, retailers and farmers.She believes that new plant produc-tion and processing techniquesserve no value if they are misunder-stood or rejected at any stage of thefood cycle.

“If the avenues of communica-tion are not used by the scientists,”Bruhn said, “they can become domi-nated by special-interest groupswho may, or may not, share science-based information.”

Professor Joy Mench, Departmentof Animal Science, was elected pres-ident of the International Society forApplied Ethology at the group’smeeting in Norway. She also serves

on the Council on Accreditation ofthe Association for the Assessmentand Accreditation of LaboratoryAnimal Care.

“Dolph has expanded publicawareness and appreciation of visualcommunication, cultural heritageand the creative spirits of people,”said Patricia Harrison, chair of thedesign program.

Design professor Barbara Shawcroft,Department of Environmental Design,is one of two American artists select-ed to compete for the Betonac Prizein Belgium. Shawcroft’s work is athree-dimentional, large-scale struc-ture created in steel wire.

Shawcroft has created public site-specific works for the Bay Area RapidTransit Embarcadero Station andThree Embarcadero Center, both inSan Francisco. She has conductedworkshops in Japan, Finland,England, Switzerland, Austria, Italyand Hawaii, as well as in the U.S.

Shawcroft currently is investigat-ing visual expressions of bubble for-mations and their mathematical com-ponents. In 1994, she was awardedthe Gold Medal Prize in Italy for abubble formation prototype.

King commented that studentsoften shy away from agriculture. “Iwas taught by my parents who weresharecroppers that working on theland or with products from the landis an honorable profession. Butmany parents and grandparentstoday tell young people about thegreat hardship associated with slav-ery or they speak about dirty, hardwork with low pay or even the lossof family-owned farms.

“Students bring these stories for-ward with them into high schooland college, thus missing many new,rewarding experiences and careers.”

Over the past few decades, greatwhite shark attacks have increased,partly because there are more diversand swimmers using the water;however, fatal attacks havedecreased. Years ago, half of thepeople attacked died; today, fourout of five of them survive.

While it is thought thatimprovements in community andemergency medical care have savedmany lives, Klimley commentedthat in some cases, the sharkschange their minds. “These sharks

Professor Serge Doroshov,Department of Animal Science,received the World AquacultureSociety Lifetime AchievementAward. It was presented at theWorld Aquaculture 2000 Conferencein Nice, France.

Doroshov was recognized forcontributions in sturgeon biologyresearch, graduate student trainingand establishing international com-mercial sturgeon aquaculture.

Doroshov joined the departmentin 1977 and has served on numer-ous state, regional and nationalcommittees. He was director of theAquaculture and Fisheries Programfrom 1995 through 1998, recentlyreorganized as the Center forAquatic Biology and Aquaculture.

In 1998, Doroshov received theDistinguished Service Award fromthe California AquacultureAssociation.

Assistant researcher Peter Havel,Department of Nutrition, wasnamed recipient of the 2000American Physiological SocietyShih-Chun Wang Young InvestigatorAward, recognizing outstandingpromise in the field of physiologicalsciences research.

Havel’s research is focused ondiabetes and obesity. He studies therole of the autonomic nervous sys-tem in regulating pancreatic hor-mone (insulin and glucagon) secre-tion and intermediary metabolism,and examines the mechanismsresponsible for impaired defensesagainst hypoglycemia in humansand animals with diabetes.

Havel’s laboratory also is investi-gating the regulation of secretionand the actions of leptin, a hormonemade by adipose tissue (fat) that isinvolved in modifying energymetabolism via its effects on feedingbehavior and energy expenditure.

This research examines the molecu-lar and biochemical mechanismsregulating leptin production and theeffects of endocrine, metabolic anddietary factors in the regulation ofleptin in animals and humans, aswell as the function of leptin in theoverall regulation of energy balanceand its role in the pathophysiologyof obesity and type-2 diabetes.

Lecturer Linda Whent (B.S., ’78,Animal Science; M.Ed., ’87,Education), Department ofAgronomy and Range Science, wasawarded the Honorary State FFADegree by the state ExecutiveCommittee for the CaliforniaAssociation of Future Farmers ofAmerica, it’s highest honor.

Whent also received the goldTeacher-of-Teachers Award from theCalifornia Association of Agricul-tural Teachers at the group’s stateconvention in June. She served onthe state committee to establishstandards of quality and effective-ness for subject matter in agricultureeducation.

In 1997, Whent received theAmerican Association of Agricul-tural Educators western region Out-standing Young Member Award. Shewas the first woman to serve asAAAE western region vice president.

Professor MikalSaltveit, Depart-ment of VegetableCrops, was electeda fellow of theAmerican Societyfor HorticulturalScience (ASHS)

for contributions in his area of specialization and to the society.

She was acknowl-edged for service to the institute atlocal and national levels and exten-sion work providing information toindustry and consumers in thefields of seafood technology, con-sumer food marketing, and fruitand vegetable processing.

Tom collects and analyzes datafor seafood research presentations,plans and coordinates workshopsand conferences, helps write exten-sion leaflets on seafood processingand food safety issues, and designsand produces visual aids forExtension specialists.

Tom supervises the only seafoodtechnology training video lendinglibrary in the U.S. and maintains aseafood technology e-mail mailinglist and Internet database on seafoodtechnology to more widely promotethe international exchange ofseafood technology.

Soils and biogeochemistry professorKate Scow, Department of Land,Air and Water Resources, was elect-ed a Fellow of the Soil ScienceSociety of America, the group’s high-est award. She also was appointed toan editorial board for the AmericanSociety for Microbiology journalApplied and EnvironmentalMicrobiology. Board members areselected on the basis of demonstrat-ed competence and achievement intheir scientific discipline, evidencedby quality of research accomplish-ments, publications in scientificjournals and national reputation.

Scow’s work in coupling physical

and microbiological processes insoil is unique in the soil microbiolo-gy community. Her research isfocused on the kinetics of biodegra-dation, interactions of sorption, dif-fusion and biodegradation of pol-yaromatic hydrocarbons, andbolatile organic chemicals andbioremediation of MTBE.

Professor Robert Flocchini, Depart-ment of Land, Air and WaterResources, was appointed to a stateair quality and agriculture advisorycommittee that will identify andpromote clean air strategies for agriculture. His area of research isthe transport of airborne particu-lates and air pollution meteorology.

Flocchini is director of theCrocker Nuclear Laboratory.

Extension poultry specialist DonaldBell, Department of Animal Science,was elected fellow of the PoultryScience Association in recognitionof his internationally knownresearch in cage layer management,flock recycling, beak trimming, egg quality and egg marketing, as wellas for service to the industry. Theassociation bestowed the honorarytitle fellow upon only two U.S. citizens this year.

Bell has contributed to educa-tional programs throughout theworld. He co-authored the fourthedition of the Commerical ChickenProduction Manual.

Alexandra Navrotsky, interdiscipli-nary professor of ceramic, Earth andenvironmental materials chemistry,is the 2000 Calorimetry ConferenceHugh M. Huffman MemorialAwardee. She was selected based onher contributions to thermodynam-ics and calorimetry. She presentedthe Huffman Memorial Award lec-ture at the conference in August.

Cooperative Extension educationresearch specialist Joan Wright,Department of Human andCommunity Development, receivedthe 2000 Distinguished ServiceAward for Outstanding Teaching -

Professor Patricia Harrison explainsdesign as “standing on the bridgebetween science and art.” She is chairof the Design Program, and she is pas-sionate about her work and the workof her colleagues.

“At a professional level, design isabout structuring our environment,”Harrison said. “To live the life or phi-losophy that we believe in, we musttake a comprehensive look at shapingour world to express our ideas.”

One way that Harrison sees theworld is through design students. “Ithink our students are very special.They see at a very profound level andwant to make a difference. The thingsthey see may be economic, social orpolitical, but their interpretation has avery strong visual complement. Theymay see social injustice and interpretit in terms of buildings or landscapeor color. Someone else may see socialinjustice and interpret it in terms ofdisease or medicine.”

According to Harrison, design isabout space, and space always hasbeen a big issue with the DesignProgram. “Our dilemma is that to seeand understand space, we need space.We need space in order to recreatespace. Our alumni rate us as an excel-lent program - all except for ourspace. It’s an ongoing problem for us.”

Harrison said that alumni keep inclose touch with the program andwith one another. Some come back toteach. Others send suggestions orideas for program improvement. “It’sthe nature of designers,” she said.“They look at our program the waythey look at everything - analyzing,thinking, considering how it could bedifferent or better.”

Harrison hopes to build strongerties with industrial and professionalcommunities and to add younger fac-ulty who will create contemporary,future-oriented linkages.

Faculty are talented and diverse,according to Harrison. “We cover abroad range of interests, includingfurniture design, textile structures,costume design, graphics, and digitalcomputing and visual presentation.

“Handcraft is still a very importantpart of design,” Harrison said, “andyet, the new medium of digital com-puters is so pervasive that it is causingsome interesting programmatic shifts.We are engaged in shifting emphasisto address the new world of digitalcomputers – working to find the rightbalance.

“As society gets more and moresophisticated and educated, the thingswe use and see become increasinglyimportant as icons of quality of life. Ifour program can keep strong intellec-tual, theoretical focus and keep mov-ing along with technological change,we will continue to turn out cutting-edge designers.

Our goal is to retain our strongdesign tradition and keep up withnew technology.”

Harrison explains that professorsin design are the individuals in acade-mia who interpret science for the larg-er public. They utilize the products ofscientific research to fabricate theobjects we use in human activities.

For many years, the Landscape Architecture Program was a part of the Department of Environmental Design; however, in1994, the two units separated, and chairs were named for each program. CA&ES Outlook interviewed program chairs PatHarrison and Dean MacCannell to find out about these two strong, independent programs that function within one department.

Professor Dean MacCannell trans-ferred to the Landscape ArchitectureProgram in 1994 from AppliedBehavioral Sciences. He always hasknown the program as an independ-ent unit. Today, he serves as chair andits biggest cheerleader.

“We share the computer lab andMSO with Environmental Design,”MacCannell said, “however, we haveour own program representative andindependent research and teachingfacilities. Our subsidiary units includethe Center for Design Research direct-ed by Mark Francis and CommunityDesign & Planning Services directedby Randall Fleming and PatsyEubanks Owens. These units supportour research and outreach activities.”

Faculty are involved in basic andapplied work at all levels of landscapearchitecture - from micro-level proj-ects (residential redesign) to major,large-scale projects (regional parks).Portfolios reflect quality contributionsin California and nationally.

“Our faculty is extraordinary,”MacCannall said passionately. “Ourphilosophy is based on three majorcomponents of design: process, envi-ronment - the impact of design onnature, and culture - the understand-ing that landscapes are created bypeople for people. We are concernedabout environmentally sustainabledesign practices and emphasize thatin our teaching and research. Ourwork is very diverse. Our facultyreflect that.”

Nigel Allan, professor – specializ-ing in mountain geography. He isinterested in nature-society relations,especially in the South Asia mountainrimland. His latest book is titledKarakorum Himalaya: A Bibliography.

MacCannell, professor and chairof the Landscape ArchitectureProgram – focused on critique andanalysis. He has done critical studiesof the Statue of Liberty, Disneylandand the Vietnam Memorial inWashington, D.C. Landscape archi-tects and planners use his work asbackground analysis for design work.

Stephen McNeil, lecturer – focus-ing on restoration work for state andnational parks. He built a statewidegeographic information system of his-toric recreational homes and evaluat-ed thousands of them for NationalRegister of Historical Places eligibility.

Patsy Eubanks Owens, associateprofessor – focused on the socialaspects of design, particularly userneeds and preferences, and participa-tion. Her research reveals how skateboard parks and shopping mallsmight be more user-friendly.

Heath Schenker, associate profes-sor – engaged in the fine arts aspectsof landscape architecture. Her CentralValley show and book is titledPicturing California’s Other Landscape:The Great Central Valley.

Rob Thayer, professor – workingon the Putah Creek-Cache CreekBioregional Project. He authored GrayWorld, Green Heart and is writing LifePlace: A Bioregional Approach toPlanning, Education and Stewardship.

“Our part-time faculty do impres-sive work,” MacCannell said withpride. “One has been contacted toremodel Union Square in SanFrancisco. Another redesigned thetrails leading to Mt. Fuji in Japan.They enjoy working with our stu-dents and often, our students movedirectly out of our programs into theirprofessional offices.”

MacCannell has three specificgoals for the next five years:

1. “We rank fourth nationally,”according to what MacCannell said.“Our space is critically important ifwe are to maintain our accreditation.I believe our program will rise in

the ranking once new facilities arerealized.”

2. “I’d like to establish a Ph.D. pro-gram in landscape architecture,” MacCannell said. “A joint Ph.D. pro-gram has been proposed with thelandscape architecture faculty at UCBerkeley. We hope to see the ideamove forward within the next three to five years.

3. The program has petitioned forfull departmental status. “This willnot necessarily disrupt our currentrelationship with design,” MacCannellexplains. “It merely makes officialwhat already is true administratively.”

The Landscape ArchitectureProgram admits students into it’smajor by portfolio review. There ishigh quality control; students literallyare hand picked. Given size and stu-dio space, the program can handleonly 100 majors. Students who justmiss the cut are encouraged to applyin the second year, and many of themare admitted.

“The level of collegiality, trust andrespect among faculty, staff and stu-dents in this program is as high as I’veever seen anywhere,” MacCannellsaid. “I am successful at my job andthis program is successful in its mis-sion because we are secure in whatwe do and in the support we receivefrom one another.”

Professor James Wilen, Departmentof Agricultural and ResourceEconomics, is a committee memberof the National Research Counciladvising the federal government onmarine reserves. His work involvesanalyzing the economic benefits andcosts of marine reserves. His col-leagues’ work is on the biologicalbenefits and costs.

Wilen recently completed astudy of marine reserves in theGalapagos Islands with assistantprofessor David Layton of TheDepartment of EnvironmentalScience and Policy and graduatestudent Micki Stewart. They con-cluded that if 20 percent of theGalapagos marine ecosystem wereset aside in a reserve, the benefit-to-cost ratio would be 10 to 1.

“We’re doing multidisciplinarywork between social and biologicalscientists focused on solving policyproblems,” Wilen said. “UC Davishas the capacity and talent to do thisand to influence state, national andworld policies.”

Hydrology professor Jan Hopmans,Department of Land, Air andWater Resources, was awarded aLand and Water Resources Researchand Development CorporationFellowship that made it possible forhim take a one-year sabbatical withCSIRO Land and Water in Towns-ville, Queensland, Australia, and

work in the CSIRO DaviesLaboratory.

During his sabbatical, Hopmansis focusing on improving the generalunderstanding of differences in deepdrainage between natural and agri-cultural systems (complex rootingsystems, e.g., tropical rainforest vs.relatively simple rooting systems;e.g., sugarcane).

Particular attention is given tothe development of methods forquantifying water and nutrientuptake by different rooting systemsand differences in quantity and qual-ity of drainage water leaving therootzone. A key aim is to developmore appropriate root uptake algo-rithms for use in crop-soil simula-tion models being used to explorelong-term sustainability of alterna-tive cropping system designs.

Hopmans resides on the PacificOcean coast. “This region ofAustralia is fantastic with its tropicalislands, tropical rain forests andGreat Barrier Reef National Park,”he wrote. “Living in Townsville is easy-going, and my family is in-volved in a range of activities in-cluding school, touring and soccer.”

A comprehensive national system ofmarine-protected areas was estab-lished by President Clinton thissummer. One of the key recommen-dations that led to the president’sorder came from a workshop heldunder the auspices of the MarineConservation Biology Institute andThe Cousteau Society.

At that workshop, 15 leadingsocial and natural scientists fromaround the world wrote a letter tothe White House calling for the cre-ation of a comprehensive nationalsystem of protected marine areasand recommending criteria for thedesign and management of the sys-tem. Professor Louis Botsford,Department of Wildlife, Fish andConservation Biology, was one ofthose scientists.

An authority on ecological mod-eling, Botsford builds mathematicalmodels of natural systems and, bymaking certain assumptions, tests

what would happen if certain thingsoccurred. He can model what theeffect of many small marine reserveswould be opposed to a small num-ber of large ones. He determineswhich would be more effective atprotecting the organisms insidethem and which would be moreeffective in producing surplusorganisms for fisherman to catch.

Professor Alan Hastings,Department of EnvironmentalScience and Policy, believes thatUC Davis is one of the places centralto the formulation of general princi-ples for the design of marinereserves. An authority on the model-ing of spatially distributed popula-tions, Hastings was co-author of aninfluential paper that appeared inthe journal Science in January 1999.With Botsford, Hastings reportedthat ‘no-take zones’ in coastal waterscould reduce the effects of fishingand better preserve biodiversity inthe world’s oceans and actually yieldthe same industry harvest as currentfishing-control methods.

Hastings and Botsford concludedthat managing through reserves cannet the fishing industry a sustain-able catch identical to the maximumyield under traditional management.

Professor Michael Reid, Departmentof Environmental Horticulture,and his group are using moleculartools to examine the genes involvedin the senescence of short-livedflowers such as daylily, daffodil andfour o’clocks. Their goal is to usegenomic tools to interfere with thesenescence process, thus providinggardeners and florists with beautifulflowers that last longer.

Department of EnvironmentalScience and Policy professorBenjamin Orlove was featured in arecent issue of the British journalNature in an article showing howindigenous or traditional knowledgehas been found to have sound scien-tific basis. According to an article inthe New York Times, modernresearch shows why people maintaintheir traditions in agriculture, nutri-tion, medicine and other fields.

One example takes place inmountain villages in Peru andBolivia where for about a week eachJune over the last four centuries,farmers have observed the stars inthe Pleiades constellation to deter-mine when they should plant theirpotato crops. If the stars are big and

bright, the farmers know to planttheir potato crops at the usual timefour months later. If the stars aredim, they know to delay plantingseveral weeks.

By pouring over reams of satel-lite data on cloud cover and watervapor, Orlove and colleagues discov-ered that these star-gazing farmersare accurate, long-range weather forcasters. High wisps of cirrusclouds dim the stars in El Ninoyears, bringing reduced rainfall tothat part of the Andes. In suchdrought conditions, it makes senseto plant potatoes as late as possible.

Orlove’s research would havebeen impossible even 10 years agobecause the type of satellite data heneeds did not exist.

The Western Center for UrbanForest Research and Education ispartnering with the Department ofLand, Air and Water Resources todevelop a computerized decisionsupport tool for urban watershedmanagement in Los Angeles.

The three-year project developedand tested a computer-based toolthat watershed managers can use inthe field to evaluate the cost effec-tiveness of environmentally friendlylandscape practices. Such a tool isneeded to implement best manage-ment practices (BMP) aimed atreducing stormwater runoff andlandscape irrigation water use, con-serving energy and recycling greenwaste.

Associate professor Susan Ustinand postgraduate researcher QingfuXiao of the Department of Land, Airand Water Resources will monitorthe effectiveness of BMPs alreadyinstalled at a South Central LA residence and develop the model’shydrologic component. Research scientists Jim Simpson and GregMcPherson of the Western Centerare working with graduate studentVirak Dee to model impacts of treeshade on building energy use.

Studies in assistant professor MaryDelany’s lab in the Department ofAnimal Science focus on poultry -such as chicken, turkey and quail - and other species of birds - such as parrots, raptors andcranes. They have been studyingaspects of avian telomere biology.

Delany describes telomeres asthe ends of linear chromosomes thatcontain a specialized repeatsequence. Telomeres are importantfor chromosome stability andrecently have been shown to be afactor controlling regulation of cellular senescence in vitro andaging in vivo.

Many animal models for cellaging have relatively shortened lifespans, whereas birds exhibit anamazing array of longevity expecta-tions, with some birds achievinglifespans similar to that of humans.Prior to Delany’s study, little infor-

Students from Cloverdale High School visited UC Davis for a glimpse of college life,and many of them left inspired and rethinking their plans for the future. For some ofthem, it was the first time they seriously thought about going on to college or abouta career in science.

The visit centered around a visit to the Department of EnvironmentalToxicology. Chair Marion Miller (back row on right) organized the day: an intro-duction to the department, an overview of avian sciences by Professor Barry Wilsonof the Department of Animal Science, a trip to the California Raptor Center, a lec-ture by Professor Ron Tjeedema who talked about acid rain, and a visit to the Centerfor Aquatic Biology and Aquaculture where facility manager Paul Lutes talked aboutresearch projects currently underway and showed the exotic fish stored at the facility.

The trip to campus gave students a chance to glimpse college life and, hopefully,inspired them to consider studying science in the future. According to trip organizer,Susan Melton-Piper, Cloverdale High School chemistry and physical science teacher,students found the day informative, enlightening and inspirational.

“I can’t wait to come to UC Davis,” one student said. “It’s going to be a greatlearning experience.”

“We have a strong group of ani-mal genomicists in our department,”Delaney said. “A positive spin-off ofthis is that our undergraduate stu-dents in the animal science majorare getting good exposure to thisnew area through courses andresearch experience.”

Department of EnvironmentalHorticulture affiliates David Nealeand Claire Kinlaw received a $1 mil-lion award from the NationalScience Foundation for pinegenomics research. The PlantGenome Research Project award isthrough a sub-contract from NorthCarolina State University. The titleof the proposal is “Wood Formationin Loblolly Pine.”

Neale and Kinlaw will contributetowards development of anexpressed sequence tagged (EST)database for genes expressed inwood-forming tissues and will con-struct genetic maps and identifycandidate genes for commerciallyimportant wood-property traits.

The mission of the Seed Biotech-nology Center is to mobilize theresearch, educational and outreachresources of UC Davis in partner-ship with the seed industry to facilitate discovery and commercial-ization of new seed technologies foragricultural and consumer benefit.

The College of Agricultural andEnvironmental Sciences was awarded a$2.5 million grant from the W .K.Kellogg Foundation to support theCalifornia Food and Fiber FuturesProject (CF3).

CF3 consists of a consortium ofhigher education institutions andstakeholder groups led by the Daviscampus. Over the next five years, CF3will conduct a set of model projectsaddressing key issues in ways that willhelp the college and its partners learnmore about how best to engage withthe many segments of the public.

UC Davis’ current challenge as aleading land grant university is toorganize resources and expertise andthen bring them to bear on local prob-lems in coherent ways.

“With this support, CF3 can con-tribute to an ongoing national dialogabout how public universities can bestengage with their constituencies in the21st century,” notes project directorRoss MacDonald, director of special

projects for the college’s Dean’s Office. A report authored by the President’sCommission, a national consortium ofland grant university chancellors andpresidents, challenges land grant universities to go beyond an outreachand service function to achieveengagement. According to the report, ‘engagement’ is based in two-way communication and is characterizedby sharing and reciprocity.

The CF3 Project is creating engage-ment through multiple partnerships,leadership, resources and a focus onconcrete actions.

The CF3 Steering Committee iscomprised of deans and associatedeans from nine institutions of highereducation and representatives from anumber of business, industry andcommunity groups. Under SteeringCommittee’s supervision, four actionteams are developing model projectsaround four key issues: sustainableagriculture and sustainable communi-ties; food, health and nutrition; stewardship of natural resources; and agricultural literacy.

Each action team, comprised ofcommunity, UC, state college andcommunity college representatives, isdesigning a set of model projects

focused on one of these issues. Eachmodel project experiments with waysto create engagement.

Model projects are designed to becarried out in cycles punctuated byannual touchstone conferences atwhich what has been learned is summarized and applied to the development of new projects and,simultaneously, new or adapted models for engagement.

CF3 will report on findingsthrough a series of annual reports, theWeb and a quarterly newsletter.

Since graduating,she has worked at the Rand Corpo-ration, co-founded a tutorial agencycalled Positive Education, Inc., back-packed through Europe and theMiddle East, was a marketing manag-er for Pacific Bell, married and gavebirth to son Jeffrey.

Wayland taught at UCLAExtension and lectured at over 275schools across the country. She alsolectured for the USC Writing Project,for Music-Center-on-Tour, and atAmerican military base schools inGermany and France. Wayland leftthe corporate world in 1985 to writefull time. Her tape, “It’s Not My Turnto Look for Grandma and OtherStories,” won the 1998 Award forStorytelling from National ParentingPublication Awards.

Ann Wilson Warner (’78, Zoology)is director of conservation at TheOakland Zoo. She enjoys coordinat-ing the zoo’s conservation projects,leading ecotours and working withteens. Erik C. Andersen (’87, Agriculturaland Managerial Economics) ofOrinda, California, recently joinedPeopleSoft in Pleasanton after work-ing 10 years with Federal Expressand Hewlett Packard. He and wifeHeather are raising two daughters,ages five and six.

Andersen reports that a favoriteUC Davis memory is working as ateaching assistant for Jim Rumsey inAg Practices 49 [tractor driving]. “Iunderstand he is still doing a greatjob,” Andersen said.

April Kangas(’89, Textiles andClothing), formeradvising associatein the college’sDivision ofTextiles andClothing, was pre-

sented the Walker Award at a formalceremony attended by awardfounder Harry Walker, Dean NealVan Alfen, co-workers and friends.Kangas was a staff adviser in thedivision for six years.

Candidates are nominated bystudents and interviewed by a committee including peer advis-ers, faculty advisers and administra-tors. Students acknowledged Kangasfor her active role in networkingstudents with UC Davis alumni.

The Walker Award was estab-lished in 1991 to honor staff advis-ers in the college who assist stu-dents with decisions regardingmajors, career options and academicdirection. Before he retired, Walkerwas a master adviser for the col-lege’s Exploratory Program.

MichaelMiramontes (’89,Agricultural andManagerialEconomics) ofVolcano,California, gradu-ated from Harvard

Dany Doueiri (’91, InternationalAgricultural Development) of CulverCity, California, is vice president ofIslamiCity in Cyberspace. She previously was vice president ofHuman Assistance and DevelopmentInternational where she trained people in alternative and low-costhousing. She also has done relief workfor refugees in Bosnia, Chechnya,Sudan and other countries.

After receiving her Ph.D. degreein Islamic studies and agriculturalpolicy from UCLA, Doueiri workedas senior policy analyst for TEAMInternational, a management anddevelopment consulting company.Her studies related to rural develop-ment, agricultural sector restructur-ing, price policy and tobacco indus-try restructuring.

Doueiri is married and expectingher first child.

Rebecca Marchant Elkins (’91,Design) of Gold River, California, isa graphic designer for OberthurGaming Technologies in SanAntonio, Texas. She is an on-sitecontractor at the California Lottery,designing instant-ticket Scratchers.Son Brock was born in February;daughter Sydney was born in 1997.

Brianna Cutts (’92, Design) recentlycompleted her master’s thesis inexhibition design at John F. KennedyUniversity in Orinda, California. Sheis working at The Sibbett Group inSan Francisco, an exhibit design firmspecializing in museums and visitorcenters. Her specialty is children’sexhibitions.

Cutts published Children’sMuseums and Serious Exhibit Topics:Guidelines for exhibit developers.The book is based on a hypotheticalplan for an exhibit focused on thedanger of guns.

Jennifer Howse (’93, HumanDevelopment) of Santa Rosa,California, is co-founder and CEOof Everything Computers Referral

Agency. She also is a professionaldog trainer and is raising four gold-en retrievers.Lucinda Shellito (B.S., ’93; M.S.,’98, Atmospheric Science) is a Ph.D.student in the Department of EarthSciences at UC Santa Cruz.

Heidi Katherine Stosick Fox (’94,Design) is marketing coordinatorwith Er&HDR in Los Altos. She pre-viously worked on historic preserva-tion projects with Carey & Co., Inc.Architecture in San Francisco.

Fox received her master’s degreefrom Texas A&M University in 1997.She married Matthew Fox in 1999.

Sunil Dutta (Ph.D., ’94, PlantBiology) is a patrol officer in theWest Valley division of the LosAngeles Police Department. He isco-author of The Lightning ShouldHave Fallen on Ghalib, a translationof the poetry of Ghalib. He collabo-rated with poet Robert Bly to writethe English version of Ghalib’spoems.

Dutta lives in the hills just northof the Santa Monica mountains. Heenjoys hiking and is helping to pre-serve the ancient Indian classicalmusic called Dhrupad. His secondbook is underway.

“I enjoyed my time in VegetableCrops,” he wrote to CA&ES Outlookrecently, “especially the research. I was fortunate to have excellent colleagues and department staff.”

Sid England (Ph.D., ’95, Ecology),UC Davis campus environmentalplanner, is a member of the stateboard of the National AudubonSociety. He was elected by theCentral Valley chapters of theAudubon Society. England is conser-vation chair for the Yolo AudubonSociety and active in the CentralValley Audubon Council.

Brayton and wife Debra WilsonBrayton (’94, Design) have onedaughter, Jasmine, born in 1999.

Diana Coss (’95, Design) recentlyjoined Pottery Barn as a full-timedesigner in product development forchildren’s products. Her “JungleIsland Rug” for Pottery Barn Kids’winter 2000 catalog was the bestseller in all divisions.

Coss previously worked forMulberry Neckwear and as a free-lance designer.

Maia Dock (’95, Applied BehavioralScience) is a member of the adminis-trative staff to HIV Services PlanningCouncil in Portland, Oregon. Narges Kamali (’99, Design) is inthe graduate program in appareldesign at Cornell University. She isrefining her ideas for her master’sthesis which she hopes to finish inspring 2001. The frozen landscapesof the East Coast are subject matterfor her “black-and-white-white-white” photography. Over the summer, she traveled to Iran to

visit her parent’s native country.Michael Inaba (’99, EnvironmentalHorticulture) of Santa Cruz is apropagator at the Monterey BayNursery in Aremas, California.

Mark Miller (’99, Design) is study-ing industrial design at Rhode IslandSchool of Design. He works pri-marly with woods and metal, areflection of his continuing interestin furniture.

Joe Borges (’00, ManagerialEconomics), a senior track and fieldAll-American, was named 1999-2000 California Collegiate AthleticAssociation Male Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year by CCAA faculty athleticsrepresentatives. While attending UCDavis, he earned three All-Americahonors.

He also has been named a finalistfor the inaugural NCAA Division IIConference Commissioners’Association Male Scholar Athlete ofthe Year Award.

In 1999, Borges won the NCAAdivision championship in the ham-mer throw. He was named co-winnerof the 2000 W. P. Lindley Award,recognizing outstanding achieve-ment in athletics, scholastics andcommunity leadership. He wasnamed to the GTE/CoSIDA academ-ic All-America college divisionspring at-large second team bysports information directors.

Barrett explains that the companyfully funded the scientists whoworked in her laboratory on a projectof mutual interest. Nippon Del Montepaid laboratory fees, visa costs andrelated incidental expenses.

“This was an excellent opportunityfor my laboratory group to work withtrained, experienced scientists whomade significant contributions to ourresearch program,” Barrett said.

Yukio Sekine worked in Barrett’slab from May 1999 through March2000 on kinetics of inactivation oftwo softening enzymes in tomatoes.He has an M.S. degree in food micro-biology and 15 years experience atNippon Del Monte.

Nobuo Watanabe, with an M.S.degree in food microbiology and 20years experience with Nippon DelMonte, began working in Barrett’s lab in May 2000. He also is workingon kinetics on inactivating tomatosoftening enzymes. He will be oncampus for seven months.

“Mr. Sekine and Mr. Watanabehave been hard working, pleasant andextremely productive,” Barrett said.“The experience has been excellent,and I highly recommend similar inter-actions to colleagues.”
