“Abandoning the Traditional Presentation

Mode” Teaching Workshop

The Australian College of Kuwait in

collaboration with the Australian Academy

launched workshops for high school

students and teachers. On 5th of December

2020, Dr. Mirna Safi – Assistant Professor in

School of Business - Management,

participated in presenting an online

workshop titled the “Virtual Teaching:

Abandoning the Traditional Presentation

Mode”. The workshop was open to all

teachers especially those who are currently

conducting online classes with their

students. The objective of the workshop

was first learn how to retain students’

attention while simultaneously offering

them an enjoyable and inspiring

experience. In addition, the workshop

intended to uncover valuable tips and

icebreakers to keep students engaged and

alert through sessions.

Page 16: Fall ì î (NovFeb í) Online Semester

16

Therefore, the presenter brainstormed with the audience on training tactics they

currently use, to unearth fresh new ideas. Dr. Mirna commenced the workshop by

noting that online teaching is taking off, but for teachers who are used to the

classroom, teaching from home can be a bit challenging. In fact, connecting via

webcam isn't always easy and it takes creativity to keep the students’ brains

stimulated!

As such, she introduced the audience to ways that can break down the lesson and

make it digestible. Then, she moved on to discussing means of adapting in-class

activities to the virtual classroom through activities and icebreakers. In addition to

that, Dr. Safi brainstormed with the audience ways to make students feel valued

and discussed the importance of setting goals and helping students stick to them.

Furthermore, the idea of presenting a person’s best (online) self was discussed and

finally she ended with engaging and untraditional ways that could bring fun into

the classroom.

The workshop was inspiring and engaging, the audience gave great feedback after

the workshop was over (see some of the messages and feedback). As a matter of

fact, Dr. Safi concluded the lecture saying that “teaching is an art form; it doesn’t

matter if you’re teaching online or in person. Great teachers hold our attention,

make us laugh, help us understand the subject matter, and, most of all, inspire us.

Therefore, achieving engagement from your students, especially online, takes

creativity, skill, practice and experience”.

Indeed, a lively, memorable presentation is worth a thousand words!
