MIKE TOMARO has been the Director of JazzStudies at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh,PA since 1997. Prior to his appointment atDuquesne, he lived in the Washington, D.C.area for seventeen years as a member of theArmy Blues Jazz Ensemble, a unit of theprestigious "Pershing's Own" U.S. ArmyBand. While a member of this group, heserved as its Enlisted Musical Director andperformed for Presidents Reagan, Bush andClinton as well as heads of state from aroundthe world. Mike is a Yamaha PerformingArtist and endorses Vandoren reeds, mouth-pieces and ligatures.

As a composer and arranger, Mike's music has been performed by thelikes of jazz greats Nancy Wilson, Randy Brecker, Mike Stern, ErnieWatts, Bobby Shew, Claudio Roditi, New York Voices, Al Vizzutti, andmany more, as well as high schools, colleges and universities around theworld. Over eighty of his compositions and arrangements are published byDoug Beach Music, Hal Leonard Publications, and Walrus Music.

As a performer, Mike has worked with such diverse artists and groups asNancy Wilson, Rosemary Clooney, Ray Charles, Michael Feinstein, LindaRonstadt, Johnny Mathis, Terence Blanchard, Louis Bellson, Terry Gibbs,Dizzy Gillespie Tribute Big Band, New York Voices, Woody HermanOrchestra and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. In hishometown, he has performed with guitarist Joe Negri, the PittsburghSymphony, Pittsburgh Ballet and Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble inaddition to leading his own small groups.

In addition to all these activities, Mike is currently working on a textbookon jazz arranging and orchestration with his long-time mentor, Dr. JohnWilson, who was Director of Jazz Studies at Duquesne University from1972-1996. The book is scheduled for publication by Kendor Music. Mikeis a long-time associate of the International Association for Jazz Educationwhere he is a member of its prestigious resource team in the area ofarranging and composition. He is also affiliated with the American Societyof Composers, Authors and Publishers where he has received an ASCAPPlus award for the past four years, the National Academy of RecordingArts and Sciences, and the Pittsburgh Jazz Society, where he is memberof its board of directors. Mike is in great demand both nationally andinternationally as a guest soloist, adjudicator, and clinician.

It is being simulcast instereo on WNTH (88.1 FM). The concert will be rebroadcast on television onlyon Friday, January 20, at 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., and Monday, January 23, at10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Tonight’s performance will be replayed 15 minutesafter the concert ends on cable television and the Internet. Tickets are on sale tonight in the lobby for the evening concert of this year'sFrank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier High School. The festival is Saturday,February 4. The evening concert will open with our Jazz Ensemble I presentingthe "World Premier" of a piece conducted by its composer, Matt Harris. Thefeatured ensemble of the evening is the all female band from New York City...DIVA. Tickets are $25 each and there are great seats still available.
