Newsletter Issue 2 2015-2016 October 2015
Fall Greetings What a glorious autumn. We hope you have been
able to enjoy this beautiful weather!
UNOWC is off to a great start. Our first event,
the Scholarship Award Dinner, was absolutely
wonderful. The setting was lovely, the food delicious,
the companionship delightful, and the scholarship
winners grateful. This evening was possible thanks to
the hard work and efforts of Jennifer Katz, Amy
Schlinder, and Janet Pol and her scholarship
committee. Sincere thanks are also extended to
Chancellor John and Honorary UNOWC President
Jan Christensen. It was a memorable event to
celebrate our ten scholarship winners, who each
received a $1000 toward their tuition. These awards
are made possible because of your generosity.
Our interest groups are also up and running. The
General Book Group met in October, and so did the
Lunch Bunch. The Mystery Book Club, led by Karen
Garver, is also looking for new members to join. For
those of you who like crafts, especially knitting,
Angelika will be starting a new interest group; all
crafts and skill levels are welcome. Angelika can also
provide basic knitting lessons or instruction if you are
interested in learning. Contact her
[email protected] if you are interested in
joining. If you
have a special
interest and would
like to establish a
new interest group
within UNOWC,
please let either of
us know so that
we can initiate it at our next meeting.
Hopefully you have received an email invitation
to our next meeting: a tour of UNO's new Baxter
Arena on Thursday, November 5th. Another copy of
the invitation is enclosed on page 3 of this issue. On
page 4 is another copy of our Membership Form, in
case you haven’t sent in your dues yet.
Looking forward to seeing you in November,
Laraine and Angelika

UNO Thompson Alumni Center
The evening was opened by Co-Presidents, Laraine
Conway and Angelika Walker, offering a welcome back to
the new school and club year.
Honorary President, Jan Christensen was introduced
and she offered a welcome from Chancellor Christensen as
well. She mentioned the importance of UNO to her family
and hoped that the scholarship recipients attending would
feel the same warmth and family feeling that UNO offers.
Co-President Conway thanked Chancellor and Mrs.
Christensen for hosting the reception and dinner.
Following the dinner, committee reports included:
Scholarship Chairman Janet Pol introduced and
thanked the committee that selected this year’s recipients.
The student recipients attending the dinner were introduced
and presented certificates. Each woman offered thanks to
those attending. Each scholarship was for $1000.
Co-President Walker introduced this year’s officers
and committee chairman and thanked them for their service
to the club.
Program: Co-Chair Amy Schindler reviewed the
upcoming programs for the year and reminded members
that invitations would be sent for each meeting by email.
Treasurer Anne Carroll presented the budget that was
recommended by the club’s executive committee. It was
moved and seconded to approve the budget as presented.
Communications Chair Elaine Allen announced that
a newsletter would be sent before each large membership
event and any notices
from special interest
groups can be sent to
her to include in the
newsletter. She is also
working on
reestablishing the club
webpage and new
Facebook page with her committee.
Membership: Mary Bernier reported the club is
interested in expanding membership and will extend
membership to female UNO alumni on a trial basis to
gauge interest.
Courtesy: Inez Petrie requested any information that
might be important for her to know about club members be
sent to her at [email protected].
Ladies Lunch Mob: Janine Brooks said she will offer

Please read the following before writing your check(s)! The main mission of the UNOWC is to support scholarships for non-traditional students. The UNOWC
would like all funds to pass through its account. Writing two checks and sending both to the UNOWC box allows the treasurer to give credit to the club for donations made to the NU Foundation.
If you want to claim the donation on your income tax, you should write one check for dues to the UNOWC and another for scholarship to the NU Foundation. Please send both checks to the UNOWC mailbox. The treasurer will send the scholarship checks written to the Foundation for processing, which will allow you to claim your donation on your income tax. If you write ONE check to the UNOWC for dues and a scholarship donation, you should not claim it on your income tax. The UNOWC is not a 501(c)(3) entity, but the Foundation is.
Make membership check payable to UNOWC and, if donating to a scholarship, another check payable to the NU Foundation. Mail to address below:
