take 2…and 3! We asked three designers to work with our cover photo and, because they all did such a fabulous job, we just had to share them with you!

A beautiful base of blue makes everything pop from Charity’s colourful, autumn page! Layers of curved pattern pa-per create a home for her hand-cut pumpkins, which she parked in front of weathered sign that holds her single strip journaling.

Mary captured the colours of the darling sweater and hat set that our cover girl is sporting in the photo, resulting in a clean, simple design. The hints of blue are the perfect touch to this bright and cheerful page.

G one are the days when travel-themed products

no longer are we limited to these two modes of

Always up for a challenge, our design team welcomed this latest opportunity

Rub-ons are very much like stamps, but without the

mess (or potential mishaps). They can be applied

demystifying misting From sheer mists to opaque finishes, spray inks and misters come in a wide range of

colours and hues. What they all have in common is that they provide your projects with

the perfect amount of shimmery sparkle and shine. For my layout, I applied a light coat

of mist to the chipboard trees, and multiple coats of mist to my chipboard title to

achieve a deep shade of rust. The scallop details you see one the layout were created

you’re not just a scrapbooker anymore! —digital workflow with stacy julian (part two)

We cannot expect ourselves to manage our current

load of digital images the same way we

approached our pictures when we used film. Why?

Because with digital photography the eight rolls of film has

become 800 digital images! The good news is there are a

myriad of options for preserving, using and sharing the

hundreds of photos we take. And guess what? Diversifying

(or choosing to use your collection of photos in several

different ways) is smart. It increases the likelihood that

others will stumble upon and enjoy your memories and it’s a

lot of guilt-free fun. Since scrapbooking is about preserving

and sharing memories, you get “points” for anything you do

that accomplishes that goal—I promise.

If you’re like me, you return from a vacation with hundreds

of photos. While your caught up in the experience and

snapping photos, you’re no doubt absolutely sure that you

will create a big, beautiful scrapbook complete with pictures,

maps, brochures and your insightful reflections. By the time

you return, unpack and eventually upload images to your

computer, your enthusiasm, while less determined, is still

hopeful that someday you’ll get around to this overwhelming

project. The more I practice diversifying my vacation

memories, the better I’ve gotten at taking the kinds of

vacation pictures I know I’ll want to use.

Digital workflow I’m going to be honest with you. Most people who browse your scrapbooks are happy with one or two pages that are a good representation of your vacation.

In 2007, I spent two weekends teaching at

scrapbooking events in Sydney, Australia and

Wellington, New Zealand. I spent the week in

between traversing the north island of New

Zealand with my husband. Follow along as I

illustrate, step-by-step, how I diversify (and

document) one trip in several meaningful ways.

Purge unwanted photos. Generally, I scroll

through images immediately after

uploading them to my computer. I make

quick decisions about which ones I most

want to keep. Most of the images I delete

are duplicates of other pictures or images

that are really not good or worth saving.

Upload images for archive and sharing.

Since I use Shutterfly to archive and print

most of my pictures, I can easily create a

Share Site for displaying and sharing my

photos online. This alone lifts that initial

burden I feel to “do something” with all of

my best vacation photos. Learn more about

Shutterfly Share Sites by clicking on the

“Share” button at shutterfly.com.

Print your favourites. After I’ve been home

awhile, I like to revisit a vacation by

scrolling through images in my photo

library. I rate or tag my most favourite

photos and then print them in a 4x6 size

and keep them in a large photo album for

viewing. From there, I can pull pictures to

create pages and projects.

Create a layout (or two!) As I browse my

favourite prints over and over I come to

realize what it is I most want to remember

about a particular trip. With this story in

mind, I create a layout for our family album

that summarizes my feelings. Even though

I have dozens of pictures to choose from, I

generally only use a handful of pictures on

these layouts.

1

2

When you start a new project like a photo album, gather the materials you will use and store them together until the project is completed.

I use generic photo albums as a foundation for building a simple scrapbook that displays lots of vacation pictures and easily highlights people I travelled with and places we visited.

Rather than feeling obligated to use all of my vacation photos, I spend time determining which are my most favourite.

Use digital frames and gifts to display

vacation images. There are numerous ways

to highlight shared vacation memories.

While digital frames can be pricey, I found

they are worth every penny. For gift-giving,

almost any online developer has great

options like mugs, mouse pads and magnets.

Create a quickie album. After I’ve lived with

my favourite vacation photos for a year or

more, I like to compile them into a quick

theme album that becomes part of our

growing collection of family scrapbooks.

These albums tend to be about displaying

the photos more than anything else, so I

keep the design simple and shift into a

creative ‘get it done’ mode.

I’ll never forget the feeling of seeing the Sydney Opera House in person and witnessing a New Zealand rainbow at dusk—probably my two favourite reminders of my trip “down under” to teach scrapbooking.

To display my best New Zealand pictures in this way, I covered four, 4” mini books with portions of the map that we used to navigate our explorations and added a few thoughts to each book.

Sometimes we feel anxious about the time and effort

we’ve invested in scrapbooking. We ask ourselves, “Will

these pages and projects I’ve created really stand the test

of time?” In my opinion, this might not even be the

question to ask. The real question is how will the next

generation want to interact with the memories we’ve

preserved? I have a hunch (while watching my four-year-

old with my iPhone) that she will be completely savvy

online and likely be drawn to a more diversified collection

of digitally-documented memories.

I say, let go of any pressure you feel to fully utilize one

avenue of scrapbooking and start playing with some of the

amazing and emerging technologies that will carry our

stories into the future.

easy, detailed, expert Whatever level of difficulty appeals to you, our easy, detailed, expert column has fantastic elements to try today!

Each year, as soon as the calendar flips over to October, my two boys start asking to

go to the farmer’s market to pick out pumpkins. And, of course, while they search for

the perfect pumpkin, I’m on the hunt for the perfect photo to document our annual

excursion. For each of my fall-inspired layouts, I started with the same three photos and

then brought in a fun mix of patterns, colours, and textures (in the form of paper, lettering,

and embellishments) to complement the photos.

by L I sA TruesdeLL

For my easy layout, I kept the design clean and simple by lining up my photos across the

page. Layered strips of patterned paper worked to create borders above and below my

photographs. I mixed mostly smaller scale patterns to keep the combination from being

too busy, but incorporated a few scraps with a larger scale pattern (the letters, numbers,

and apples) as embellishments for my page. After struggling for a title for a few minutes, I

found myself relying on one of my favourite tried and true tricks—pulling a few important

words from my journaling to create a meaningful title.

For my expert layout, I wanted to kick

things up a notch by adding in some of my

favourite techniques. First, I masked off a

rectangle in the middle of the page and

misted the background paper green. next,

I enlarged one photo and printed it without

a border before matting it on yellow fabric

paper—this gave the page a clear focal

point. stamped journaling lines gave me

more room to add handwritten journaling

and helped to balance out the additional

photos on the right side of the page. next, I

added a die-cut title and a small grouping

of embellishments to the top left corner.

Finally, I created a visual triangle of rub-

and incorporated a yellow patterned

paper underneath to tie them all

together. I added a “spritz” of green

to some corrugated alphas to help

them coordinate with the other page

elements, and then mixed them with

letter stickers to add interest to the title.

Taking a cue from my son’s jacket in the

photos, I brought in a bit of dark blue

patterned paper—it added a fun bit of

contrast to the autumn colour scheme.

I finished the page with a trio of rub-on

My daily walk provided the inspiration for this layout, stopping to photograph all of our favourite shops and destinations on our regular route. I often wonder how many times these shops have changed over the years, and how different the main street might look when our girls are grown up.

I love my neighbourhood in downtown Toronto. A block

from the quiet shores of Lake Ontario, and a thirty

minute streetcar ride to the heart of the city, I feel like

we have the best of both worlds. Most days I am out of the

house early for a walk with the kids in the stroller. I often

have my camera with me, and I’ll stop to take a few shots—

not only to document our favourite stops along the way, but

also as inspiration for my scrapbook pages. Did you know

that right outside your door there is a wealth of scrapbook

inspiration? From layout topics, to design, to colour

palettes—taking time to photograph the world outside your

front door can become a treasure trove of ideas.

start at the beginning

I have a challenge for you. Bring your camera with you

wherever you go on a typical day, and take a dozen

photographs. Shoot whatever catches your eye—a street

sign, a storefront, an ad on a city bus—and then later on

have a look at the batch. What do you love about these

images? What details made each subject something you

wanted to photograph? Was it the lettering on the sign above

the bookstore, or the colour combo in the ad on the side of a

city bus? Recognizing what pleases your eye is the first step

to creating a layout you love.

Lisa loves her city life and the fact that so much

urban culture is within walking distance from her home. She played up her love of sushi on this layout with her choice of colour scheme, her fun title and, of course, the complementary photos that drive the theme of her page.

This theory doesn’t just apply to city folk

like me. A rural landscape can be just as

inspiring, if not more so. For this article,

I asked design team member, Davinie

Fiero, to play “country mouse” to my “city

mouse.” Davinie lives with her husband and

two children on two acres in Redmond,

Oregon, and her layouts perfectly

embody that country inspiration.

Davinie thanks the local pumpkin farmer for providing the rich and vibrant colour palette for her “Pumpkin Patch” layout. She chose a subtly patterned shade of green to mimic the sky, picked up the dark roof of the barn with her title, and pulled various other “earthy” shades for her creatively layered vertical border.

Putting it into practice

Now that you’ve looked through your photos and identified what it is that

appeals to you, here are some practical ways to apply those details to

your layout design:

Once you’ve discovered a pleasing colour palette in your photos, find

similar tones in your cardstock and pattern paper for an interesting

combination. For digital artists, use the eye dropper tool to sample

each colour

Flowers, trees and butterflies continue to be hot trends, so why not

take a photograph of something organic and indigenous to your

locale, such as a flower. Print the photo onto cardstock and cut the

image out for an instant, custom embellishment

I love architectural details. Study a building that you love—

interesting adornments on its facade such as corbels, brick work and

inlaid glass, are all patterns that can be reflected in paper design

Store signs are often straight forward and to the point—an

excellent source of inspiration for a good title area

I hope that you will take the challenge and give

it a try. If you do, be sure to share your layouts

with us at [email protected]

We’d love to see what you come up with!

here’s your topic

Now that we’ve covered how to find design

inspiration within your images, let’s use those

photos you took on your walkabout and scrap

them! A “day in the life” style layout is always a

pleasure to look back on. Some topics you might

want to consider include:

The places and people that you meet

each day

A favourite restaurant

A list of errands about town—the good, the

bad and the ugly.

How your neighbourhood has changed

over time

If you’ve moved, how your new

neighbourhood differs from the old

Why you’ve chosen to live in the city or

country, and how it colours your everyday

experiences

A photo of our local bakery provided the structure for this layout. My title mimics the shape and style of the bakery’s sign, and the photos are placed roughly in the spaces where the doors and windows are found on the facade.

We’ve all done it. You’ve gripped

that 3” scrap of paper in your

hand, silently asking yourself, “Do

I save it or do I toss it?” Or looked at that

sheet of alpha stickers with so many empty

spaces that you are quite certain you could

not possibly spell another word. Or the 12”

leftover border sticker that you chopped

off 4” from for another project. Whether it

is for economic reasons or because you

simply cannot part with that gorgeous

leftover morsel, scraps can be an abundant

resource in your arsenal of supplies.

September’s sketchIn a warm palette of autumn splendour, Danielle put leftover

letter stickers, a stray journaling sticker and loads of paper scraps

to great use. By breaking up the main photo into three smaller

photos, she created a nice, open space to tumble paper leaves

down the center of her beautiful, fall page.

October’s sketchWith this sketch, Becky was able to use a wide

range of small paper scraps, orphan stickers

and even the edges of a leftover bracket

die-cut. A tip from Becky: “With pieces this

small, you don’t have to be concerned that all

of the colours match perfectly. Once your

page is assembled, you’ll be surprised how

well everything blends together.”

November’s sketchThis sketch is perfect to use up just about any

size scrap of paper or border sticker in your

stash. For the owl card, Becky’s scraps went

even further to cover some of the chipboard

pieces on the owl as well. For the thank you

card, she used an eclectic mix of scraps, all

resting on a neutral background of kraft

paper. Although the strips are varied in both

colour and pattern, a light piece of ledger

paper through the center allows her flowers

to stand front and center.

The word “special” can be defined as something that is just a little bit unique and that is made with a specific purpose in mind. This issue’s project meets those criteria and will undoubtedly be treasured for years to come.

something special

The moment I saw the Pasta Fagioli! Jillibean Soup

collection, I knew I wanted to make this trio of Live,

Love and Laugh frames for my home. With small

strips of paper, I was able to use the entire collection of

beautiful patterns. I chose simple shapes (the butterfly,

flower and heart images) that I could repeat and layer to

create added dimension inside the frames, and the bold,

corrugated alphas were the perfect choice for the titles.
