What’s the longest running show on Broad-way? Think you know the answer? Are yousure? Well, it’s actually the Macy’s Thanksgiv-ing Day Parade®! Since 1924, the Parade haskicked off the holiday season with gloriousbands, balloons and floats. For a complete his-tory of the parade, check out Macy’s ParadeHistory website.

It all started in 1924 as Macy’s employeestreated Manhattan to the city’s first Macy’sThanksgiving Day Parade®. The response wasso overwhelming that the founders declared itwould be an annual event.

It was in 1928 that the famous helium-filledballoons were first released at the end of theparade. The following year, the balloons werefitted with safety values allowing them toremain airborne for several days. And, as anadded feature, a return address was placed onthe balloons. If you were lucky enough to findone and return it to Macy’s, you received aprize!

In 1934 the Parade saw the first collabora-tion between Macy’s and the now famousWalt Disney Productions. It was that year thatsaw the introduction of the Parade’s firstMickey Mouse balloon.

As time went on and the popularity of theparade increased, viewers now show up atCentral Park on Wednesday night before thebig event. It’s there that the Macy’s employeesand volunteers finish blowing up the big bal-

loons and the spectators come out for a close-up view of the event. Warning, you now haveto get there early as well, because more andmore spectators show up each year for thisspecial occasion.

What should you bring to view the parade?Dress warm! Even if the weather reports arefor warmer temperatures, you have to get toyour favorite location early to view theparade. And you will be standing for a longtime at that location. And the wind is alwaysblowing in the canyons of New York Citybetween the tall skyscrapers, so bundle upand wear the extra woolen socks. You canalways remove layers if the sun warms you up.

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade kicks offthe holidays with unparalleled pomp andpageantry. The scale of the Macy's Thanksgiv-ing Day Parade is immense: more than 3.5 mil-lion people view the parade live along theparade route, and more than 50 million view-ers tune in to the television broadcast. Specta-tors watch in awe as 10,000 participants —including the nation's best marching bands, performance groups, giant helium balloons, breathtaking floats and the one-and-onlySanta Claus — pass before their eyes.

If you'd like to get a chance to see the bal-loons as they get blown up, on Wednesday,Nov. 25, 2009 you can observe the inflation ofthe 25 balloons from 3 - 10 p.m. near theAmerican Museum of Natural History just off

Central Park West between 77th St. and 81stSt. This has become a great spectator event aswell so plan on getting there early.

Each unit includes a liv-ing room, dining room, full kitchen and bed-rooms on the second floor. Cable TV is in theliving room and master bedroom. Contact theMWR Office for reservations.

If the Coast Guard Lodging is full, there is aNavy Lodge co-located at Fort Wadsworth.Their direct number is 718-442-0413.

Coast Guard. There are overflow hotels thatmilitary friendly and can make your stay veryenjoyable.
