FROM THE GARDENER

The Pleasant Hill Shakers were leaders in agricultural sciences and advancing livestock breeding techniques. In an effort to share this story, the farm is increasing its small herd of Red Durham Shorthorn cattle, a breed first brought to Kentucky by the Pleasant Hill Shakers. Three new heifers have arrived and are expecting calves early next year, just in time for spring!

DAVID PARIS Livestock Supervisor

FROM THE FARMER

The summer harvest was good to us this year! We picked bushels of green beans, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, onions, okra and a variety of tomatoes that were served in the Dining Room. We even rounded up some wild blackberries that were used in a cobbler for our first Garden Supper of the season. The fall harvest looks to be just as abundant!

FROM THE NATURALIST

FROM THE SUSTAINABILITY SPECIALISTOur first low-waste event, Well Crafted–Local Brews + Local Bands, kicked off our new Village-wide recycling program. We collected paper programs, glass bottles, aluminum cans, cardboard, plastic bottles and cups, and submitted them to the Harrodsburg/Mercer County Recycling Center. We’re placing more recycling bins around the Village, and we’re having a greater recycling presence at catered events on-site. We look forward to continuing our expansion of the recycling program and sharing Shaker sustainability lessons.

If you haven’t visited Pleasant Hill in the fall, we encourage you to do so. The fall foliage peaks around the last two weeks of October, but from the time the leaves begin to turn until they fall, the Nature Preserve is full of gorgeous views. It’s also a great time to see the geological features around the property. We’re leading several new programs this fall, including Owl Prowls, a challenging Backwoods Hike and a Geology Hike in November. We’d be glad to point out the highlights if you have plans to hike, run, bike or ride along the trails this autumn.
