A Message from the PrincipalThe months of November and December are filled with absolute beauty in and of themselves. The changing leaves, the falling snow, the time of year when families come together – all gifts of beauty. However, the true joy of experiencing “things” of such beauty become exponentially more so in the realm of a Catholic school. Day in and day out our students and faculty are engaged in conversa-tions and authentic relationships that build upon the exploration and discovery of such beautiful gifts. The ultimate gift that resides in this process

of discovery is that which directs every detail of every gift back to its point of origin – God.

As we prepare for the gifts of the month of November, such as the change in seasons, the gather-ings around bountiful meals, and the sharing of companionship with friends and family, we offer thanks and gratitude as a Catholic school community that finds the origin of all things pointing us towards God. I personally would like to express gratitude for our students and families, our dedicated faculty and staff, and the tremendous efforts and stewardship of our benefactors and stakeholders. There are countless occasions throughout the course of each school year where I have the opportunity to personally witness the prayerfully discerned and sacrificial investments offered to our community in order for our students to have the opportunity to encounter Christ in such an intimate and loving way.

Additionally, as we near the end of November and move into December, we are again blessed with many gifts of the Spirit. This year in particular, beginning on the first Sunday of Advent, we will be the recipients of the fruitful work of so many who have labored to bring us the New Roman Missal. These changes that you will see in the mass promise to enrich our experience as a faithful community in our celebration of the Eucharist. We will be able to experience the mass through the new translations that truly bring us back to a more accurate translation and under-standing through the use of language that reflects the Gospels and the Word of God.

In preparation for this Advent, I would like to ask that you please continue to pray for the suc-cess of Bishop Machebeuf High School and its work to form the hearts, minds and souls of our students in the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are truly blessed as an academic commu-nity of faith to continue the traditions of the truth of our faith which have stood the test of time for the past two millennia. Catholic schools today are charged with a very specific vocation that is necessary for the future of our children and the future of the Catholic Church. Thank you for your partnership in creating sound Catholic citizens for our future world who love and seek God in all things, striving to live their lives as saints!

Approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 56th annual National Merit Scholarship Program were announced this month by officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Joshua Napierkowski has been selected as one of the nearly 16,000 semifinalists. He will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some of the 8,400 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $36 million that will be offered next spring. Nicholas Suhr has been recognized as a Commended Student – placing in the top 5% in the 2012 competition.

To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn competitive SAT scores. National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the Spring of 2012.

God is here.The seniors will be college students soon. One Machebeuf Senior made a remark recently that she didn’t feel as if she had been pre-pared to go into the real world. What is the most important thing that anyone going into the real world should know when leaving Machebeuf?

God is here.

Here.Not here, in the sense that God is at Machebeuf. God is here. Right here. He’s here at Machebeuf because He is here… with US. He is here.

This class has heard it all. At Machebeuf, they’ve heard from us about the teachings about morality, ethics and justice. They constantly hear from us that God loves them and that Christ died for them, but soon they will not be hearing from us at all. So, what could we give them their senior retreat that they needed the most?

God is here.

He will be there, also.For three days, the senior class gathered at St. Malo retreat center for their final retreat. In addition to fun together, crazy games and lots of sentimental and touching mom- ents, the seniors once again encountered the Lord right where they were.

The Machebeuf community celebrated our annual Home-coming game and dance in style this year. To start things off, our football team recorded a homecoming game victory with a win over Denver West. Before the game, alumni gath-ered in the stadium parking lot for our annual alumni tailgate party. During half-time, wewere treated to a special performance by the Air Force Academy Marching band and the presentation of the Golden Buffalo Awards to our alumni of the year. The Homecoming dance was held at Machebeuf with the James Bond theme, “007 - License to Thrill”. Thank you to those who made this another thrilling and successful Homecoming!

Golden Buffalo AwardsAlumni of the Year

Young Alumni of the YearWhile attending Machebeuf Danny Young’s life changed completely. While attending Machebeuf, Danny was a student in the Learning Strategies Program. Danny is grateful to the LSP program, which not only taught him how to study, but taught him how to take control of his own decisions and create his own direction in life.

At Machebeuf, Danny competed in golf, basketball and baseball. He was fortunate enough to take part in many winning seasons in both baseball and basketball and he was a member of the 2005

State Championship Baseball Team!

After graduation, he attended Benedictine College in Atchi- son, KS where he earned a double major in Business Administration with an emphasis in management, and Phys- ical Education with an emphasis in Sports Management.

He now serves his Machebeuf community as a Varsity Assistant Basketball coach, is engaged to his fiance Alex, and currently works as a liability claim adjuster with CAN Insurance Company.

BMHS Honors Veteran of “Black Hawk Down”.

Alumni of the YearMatthew Cosby enlisted in the Army Infantry after graduating and served as an Army Ranger in combat during Operation Desert Storm. In 1993, Matthew was in The Battle of Mogadishu, more popularly known as Black Hawk Down and was part of Operation Gothic Serpent. During this operation, Matthew was shot twice. He then served in Bosnia from 1994-1995. He received a medical retirement from the Army in 1996, and was awarded 2 Purple Hearts, and the Silver Star Medal. He is currently a Lieutenant with the San Antonio Police Department serving in the Gang and Narcotics unit. Matthew has been married for 15 years and has 6 children.

In his memories of Machebeuf, Matthew stated, “I learned more at Machebeuf than anywhere else.” He had great teachers here, and remembers Mr. Jaster as his favorite. “Mr. Jaster helped me get over my fear of public speaking. It’s because of him that I can teach classes at the Police Academy.” Matthew played on the championship football team at Machebeuf, and he still is in contact with his “Big Brother” Alan Tamendong and recalls going out for breakfast in his pajamas on the first day of school.

We are honored to call Matthew a Machebeuf Buffalo!

Robotics, Robotics, Robotics!Bishop Machebeuf High School participated in the 2nd annual Rocky Mountain BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science, and Tech-nology) Robotics competition on October 23rd.

The BEST organization provides participating school teams with identical kits containing all ma-terials and equipment necessary to construct a robot for the BEST competition, at no cost to the schools. The BEST competition isheld annually only 6 weeks after the schools receive the materials. Twenty- four schools throughout the Denver Metro area competed this year along with hundreds of schools nationally. Our goal is to motivate kids for studies and careers in engineering, science, and technology. We introduced them to engineering/scientific methods through mentoring by two Metro State College of Denver students and actual hands-on experience. Students experienced real-world engineering while participating in an exciting and fun competition with their peers.

On Saturday, September 17th at 7:30 am, members of the Machebeuf Boys Soccer Team volunteered for the annual Hands for Hope Day with Hope Communities. Despite the fact that it was the morning after the Homecoming dance, there were 27 soccer players, parents, and coaches there to help out! Hope Communities is a Christian organization that assists people in need with housing and other basic needs.

Because we had such a great turnout, Hope Communities was able to divide up our group to work on three separate projects. Three players, with the assistance of Brother James, helped to clean out a residence. Another large group of players and parents worked to paint a rail on a handicap ramp and to paint the back side of a building used for meetings and offices. The third group of players, parents, and Coach Brian helped to pull weeds and spread mulch in a lot that is being converted into a park. The players worked hard and the people from Hope Communities continually complemented their work ethic and dedication. Thank you for your service to others!
