THE NEW ENGLAND TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH COMPANY endeaVORto provide:

A capacity for effective service, by the installation and maintenance 01a well-constructed plant, with such provision for future extensions asprudent foresight directs. .

.~ capacity for eflident service by the trained ability of over 14,000employees.

It serves the four northern New England States, which, although a closely aWedcommunity, are developed on a wide variety of manufacturing, mercantile and agrl-cultural Interests, and a diversity of social requirements. Comprehensive telephoneservice is determined by a Variety of factors, therefore, and by a regard for the require-ments of the community as a whole, rather than of any detached part.

On January 1,1917, this Company had attached to Its system,ln the four north .. nNew Eniliand States, 622,000 telephones, an average of approximately one telephone toeach ten Inhabitants. There is hardly a community In its territory which cannot bereached by telephone over its lines or over the lines of its connecting companies. Itsassociation with the American Telephone & Telegraph Company enables it to givethis community long· distance service to any part of the United States or Canada, within the rante of telephone transmission.

Don't"Jiggle"TheHook

When you take the receiver off the switchhook of your tele-phone, a small electric lamp is Ughted on the switchboard infront of the operator. To that signal she responds with thefamiliar "Number, please?"

After your connection has been made with the other person, the lights go out and do not reappear until the receivers areplaced on the sWitchhooks again; which signals then indicateto the operator that the conversation has ended.

If you desire. to get the operator's attention, you may do soby moving the receiver hook down and up, but IT MUST BEDONE SLOWLY, or the little lamp will not have time to glowand the operator will not get any signal. Your observance ofthis method of signaling will insure more prompt attentionby the operator and will help to make the service better.
