Our RootsWHO IS OSPREY?

Since Osprey was founded in 1974, every single product design has passed through the hands of owner and founder Mike Pfotenhauer,who created his first backpack at age 16.

In Santa Cruz, California, the young entrepreneur opened a retail shopin the front of his rental house where backpackers and travelers came for custom-fit, made-to-order packs constructed over several days by Mike himself. As the demand for the great-fitting packs increased, Osprey found itself relocating to its current home in Southwest Colorado.

Today, Osprey is a melting pot of diverse personalities, backgrounds and abilities. All share the common belief that adventure is open to everyone and found anywhere.

AMGWARRANTY AND REPAIR

Osprey will repair any damage or defect for any reason free of charge—whether it was purchased in 1974 or yesterday. If we are unable to perform a functional repair on your pack, we will happily replace it. We proudly stand behind this guarantee, so much so that it bears the signature of company founder and head designer, Mike Pfotenhauer.

Custom or decorated products may be eligible for AMG; however, Osprey will replace any unrepairable pack with an in-line equivalent, un-decorated pack.

RENEWAL WORKSHOP

Since 2018, Osprey has been working with Renewal Workshop to extend our product end-of-use timeframe and

keep products out of the landfill. When products are returned and are not deemed repairable, we send them to

the Renewal Workshop to “renew” and sell them either as repaired packs or as new products. This partnership

reduces the amount of non-repairable products that go to the landfill by up to 800 pounds per month.

REPAIR TO SHARE

Through our Repair Outreach Specialist, select packs that are returned and not covered under the AMG policy

are collected, repaired and donated to youth programs, schools and groups focused on providing education or

outdoor opportunities for underserved populations.

BLUESIGN®-APPROVED MATERIALS

Used worldwide, bluesign® is a system that manages the impact textile production has on chemicals, people,

factories and our environment. Materials carrying the bluesign®-approved label meet strict ecological

and toxicological requirements. We are incorporating as many bluesign®-approved fabrics as possible and

submitting materials to third-party labs for analysis and spot checking.

RECYCLED MATERIALS

We use the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), an international voluntary product standard, for third-party

verification of our high-quality, durable recycled content. The GRS establishes requirements to guarantee

truthful content claims as well as fair working conditions and reduced negative environmental and chemical

consequences. In Spring 2021 and beyond, we will be using recycled materials that meet GRS certification,

including recycled high-tenacity nylon—a first of its kind in a major commercial form.
