CLARINET EXCERPTS

(Excerpts marked with an asterisk * are for all clarinet majors, minors, and non-majors; clarinet majors – or anyone else wishing to be considered for Wind Ensemble or Symphony Orchestra – are required to perform ALL

excerpts) *Excerpt 1: Cyrille Rose, 32 Etudes for Clarinet, #17 Please stop at the double bar line/at the a tempo marking (do not play the last two measures!) This excerpt should demonstrate your cantabile legato style, as well as your accuracy of playing in a slow subdivision. Think about the big picture of your dynamics throughout and plan where to take your best breaths within the excerpt.

* Excerpt 2: Cyrille Rose, 32 Etudes for Clarinet, #10 (marked Allegro)

Please start at the a tempo marking (do not play the first two measures!) This excerpt should highlight your light staccato-articulation style (this is not legato articulation despite the absence of a “.” over the non-slurred notes) and your ability to play mixed articulations accurately. Please note that you should consider adding some dynamic interest to this excerpt; it should not all be played at a piano dynamic level! Consider the natural shaping of the lines to help you determine how you wish to make this musically interesting!
