Fall 2018 Alpha Mu Tau Fraternity
Transcript of Fall 2018 Alpha Mu Tau Fraternity
Greetings to All!
I hope this time of year finds everyone with a
little cooler weather. I know in South Texas we
are finally rid of the 90-95-degree tempera-
tures we had experienced since last June.
I want to thank Suzanne Butch for initiating the
project of creating endowments for all our
scholarships. The Scholarship Committee,
along with the Treasurer, Finance Committee
and our Executive Secretary, will need to work
out the details for the allotment given to each
of the Scholarship recipients. By creating endowments for each of the
scholarships, the Alpha Mu Tau Fraternity will always have monies for
our students.
I am looking forward to the ASCLS Annual meeting in Charlotte, North
Carolina. Our organization has teamed with the American Association for Clinical Chemistry for
many years, and our move away from AACC will certainly change the atmosphere of the meet-
ing. The location should provide the membership with a less expensive venue, thus allowing us
to contribute more dollars to our various scholarships. Our President Elect, J.R. Constance, will
be working with several people in the Charlotte area to look for a venue for the AMTF dinner.
More details to follow as we get closer to our meeting in June.
I want to remind everyone that if you have a candidate in mind for membership in AMTF please
have them fill out the AMTF membership application and forward to J.R. Constance our Member-
ship Chairman.
See everyone in Charlotte or perhaps at the ASCLS Clinical Laboratory Educators Conference in
Baltimore, MD.

I began my laboratory adventure at Michigan State University (MSU), completing my under-
graduate degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, followed by and internship at Henry Ford Hos-
pital. Thereafter, I accepted a position as a generalist at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michi-
gan. I worked in all sections of the lab and across all shifts. Throughout this time, my level of in-
volvement in ASCLS increased by attending meetings and acting as a moderator during the
state spring meeting. During one of these meetings, I was introduced to the new Biomedical La-
boratory Diagnostics Masters Program at MSU. After completion of the Masters Program, I took a
position at the University of Michigan Pathology Department as the Specimen Processing Super-
visor. Several years into that role, a new position was created within the department. I stepped
into this new role, and have been in that position as the Clinical Pathology Operations Manager
for almost 8 years. Over this time, I have taken several leadership roles in ASCLS-Michigan, in-
cluding the position of President. I’ve supported legislative efforts lead by ASCLS and organized
Lab Week at my institution to promote the profession. When I’m not in the lab, I enjoy various
activities such as triathlons, vintage baseball and coaching “Girls on the Run”. My love for rec-
reation has also let to starting a non-profit for my local community.

I have been active in ASCLS since 2001 serving the ASCLS-Wisconsin board as a director, secre-
tary and president. I have served the national ASCLS organization as the Education Scientific As-
sembly vice-chair and chair. I am currently serving as the national coordinator of the ASCLS Sci-
entific Assemblies and as vice-chair of a newly formed Body of Knowledge Committee. Of the
service I have offered ASCLS, the most significant to me is the ASCLS-Wisconsin student poster
event, which I have coordinated since 2003. Over 100 students present posters related to labor-
atory science practice and research at the ASCLS-Wisconsin annual convention. It has been my
great pleasure and reward to meet future laboratory professionals through this activity.
Community service and giving back are also important to me I served twelve years as a mem-
ber of the board of education in my Milwaukee areas school district and continue to serve the
Village of West Milwaukee as a member of the local plan commission. Professionally, I worked
for twenty years in medical laboratories in the Milwaukee area, including supervising a heavy
metals testing lab with accreditations in industrial hygiene and NIST. My medical laboratory
background set me up well to manage these specialty accreditations. Today, I am the Director
for Academic Initiatives and Planning in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Wis-
consin-Milwaukee, where I manage eLearning and Flex Option Competency program and in-
struct future medical laboratory scientists in the UWM MLS program.

I received a BS degree in Medical Technology from the University of Louisville in 1979. We had a
guest lecture in Immunology that year, who inspired me to pursue a Ph.D. after graduation. I
worked in Special Chemistry and Hematology while in graduate school. After receiving my
Ph.D., I was the Technical Supervisor in Immunology. When my husband finished his degree, we
went to Cornell University for Post-doctoral work. There was no clinical laboratory opportunity
there as Cornell’s Medical School is not at the main campus. I held research faculty positions at
the School of Veterinary Medicine for 14 years while doing research in immunotoxicology and
nutritional immunology. I returned to Louisville as my parent’s health declines, I taught at a
medical magnet high school prior to taking the position as MLS Program Director at Bellarmine
University in 2004. Since then, I have renewed my involvement with the profession and with AS-
CLS. Much of my professional activity has centered around my work with the Patient Safety Com-
mittee.
