Why Dental Health During Pregnancy Maers Pregnancy can be an incredible experience and such a precious time in your life! It can also be over- whelming with the multitude of prenatal visits, the never ending to-do lists and the not-to-do lists. While there are so many things to juggle to maintain a healthy pregnancy, it’s imperative to visit your dentist and to keep your gums healthy. It’s especially important to have a dental checkup, dental cleaning, and any necessary treatment while pregnant. The best time to have dental work done is during your second trimester, which is typically the most comfortable of the three trimesters. Delaying necessary treatment for oral health problems during pregnancy could result in significant risk to you and your baby. During pregnancy, there is an increase in progesterone hormone levels that can cause a weakened response to plaque bacteria, causing more plaque buildup than normal, puffiness, redness and bleed- ing when you brush or floss. If pregnancy gingivitis isn't treated, it may lead to more serious gum (periodontal) disease and even tooth loss. Several research studies have suggested that women with periodontal disease may be more likely to deliver babies prematurely or with low-birth weight than mothers with healthy gums. Roger Hart, a professor of Reproductive Medicine at the University of Western Australia published a study that associates periodontal disease with infertility. The study found that women with gum dis- ease took on average two months longer to conceive than women without gum disease. This was the first report to suggest that gum disease may be one of several factors that could be modified to im- prove the chances of a pregnancy. So what is your best defense mechanism? It's simple. In addition to scheduling regular dentist ap- pointments, brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily. And, enjoy your pregnancy!! It’s all absolutely worth it! On a sunny Sunday of August, everyone

gathered at the Nottoway Park in Vienna

for our 2nd Annual Patient Appreciation

Summer BBQ to celebrate our strong

relationship with our patients, and thank

them for their trust and loyalty.

All enjoyed the food catered by Dickey’s

Barbecue, and the amazing hamburgers

and hot dogs grilled by Dr. Elgeddawi.

Children and adults loved the ice cream truck (the kids started running to it as soon as

they saw it pulling up), and the balloon artist and face painter distributed happiness to

all.

The balloon artist made swords, bow and arrows and other characters like Elmo or the

little mermaid shaped balloons, and the face painter painted butterflies and super

heroes on the children’s faces.

We had a raffle with three winners for an electric toothbrush, a teeth whitening kit,

and $100 gift card.

Everyone had a great time, and we are looking forward to the 3rd edition next year!

Patient Referral Contest

During three months we held a referral contest at our office. The patient referring the most new patients to our office was going to win a 43” 4K Toshiba TV. Dr. Barakat recently had the pleasure to give the TV to our winner, Garrett Coble, who referred new patients to us! Thank you to all who participated, we appreciate your trust by referring your family and friends to our practice. Congratulations Mr. Coble!
