Upon winning her election to the Assembly last year. Ms. Persaud held the distinction of being the first Guyanese American and female assernblymember for th1: 59th A.O .. Should she win her State Senate scat this year, she will also hold the disti nction of becoming the first woman state senator for the 191h S.D ..

The general election will be hdd on Tuesday. NoYcmber 3rd. Ms. Persaud wi ll have a Republ ican challenger, so it i~ essential for Democrats to , otc on that Jay to keep the State Senate scat in Democratic hands. □

JAI1\1E WILLIAMS Jaime Williams has been an active member of her

community for 0\'Cr 12 years. She has played a role in many orga111zat10ns m Canar~ie and Mill 13asm. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago. she came to the United States 111 1999. settling m New York City. A mother of three children. Ms. Williams has been mvolved m their educational need-; through her participation in their school PT As and parent's orga111zat1ons. Her youngest daughter. Cayenne. is a student at PS 203. her middle daughter Yvette currently attends Murrow High School and her oldest daughter, Brithney. 1s in her second year of Hunter College.

Jaime joined the Thomas Jefferson Club in 2006. As a student at Kingsborough College. she met our illustrious president. Henry Bolus who invited her to participate in the political process by involving her in our organization's many activities. Jamie has been a constant force in the affairs of our Democratic Club.

She has worked on every major political campaign we have been a part of since she joined us and has been chairperson of our Dinner/Dance committee. She has been involved in our membership drives and has always been a,ailable, even while raising three kids and attending college, eventually graduating with a Master's degree in Social Work from Fordham University.

Jamie has organized food drives for the College Opportunity to Prepare for Employment Program (COPE), an organization that assists battered women. who arc in shelters, gain their GEDs and employment. This program makes them better equipped to deal with their difficult situations. She has also planned and organized domestic v101cnce awareness programs and volunteered her time at battered women 's shelters, using her talents as a social worker to benefit these most unfortunate individuals.

Jamie Will iams is truly the epitome of what it means to be an active member of her community. She is a

member of the Canarsie Lions Club, and the 69tl' Precinct Community Council. She is a graduate and participant in the City's CERT program, which is a volunteer program to prepare for emergencies by aiding the police and fire departments when a crisis occurs in our community. She is also a member of the Mill Basin Civic Association and Community Board 18.

In 2007. Jaime founded Empowerment = Courage to Heal Inc., an organization devoted to raising awareness against domestic violence in the community. Jaime ·s experience includes over 8 years of counseling women and children victims of domestic violence. Her experience has allowed her to collaborate with faith-based. community and civic organizations to promote awareness about domestic violence. Jaime functioned as a liaison between the shelters and the community.

Following Super Stom1 Sandy. Jaime was employed by Catholic Charities to work in Brooklyn with disaster victims, particularly in Canarsie, Bergen Beach. Gerritsen Beach and Coney Island. Her perfonnance was so exceptional that her supervisors promoted her to area director for south Brooklyn catholic churches to assist pastors in providing outreach programs for their parishioners.

T J Club's 60th Annual Dinner

The Thomas Jefferson Club ·s 60th Annual Dinner Dance will be held on Sunday, November I st. 6:00 PM. at the El Caribc in Mill Basin. This year's honorees are Howard Fenstennan, Ingrid Lewis Martin. and our editor, Ian Gaynor. State Assemblyman Joseph Lento! wi ll receive the Bernard Catcher Memorial Award. The ticket price is S 130 per person and includes a cocktail hour and dinner. dessert. a live band, dancing, and brief speeches from some of your elected officials.
