INTRODUCING TED SZAL!

ABWK - SEEKING APPLICANTS

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S CHAIRMost volunteers, donors, and the general public, would not list advocacy

as a top descriptor of Habitat’s work. Yet this year advocacy has been a very important part of our work in the community and in Oregon.

Habitat joined 7 other organizations to form a coalition to advocate for affordable housing at the state and local level. A Meyer Memorial Trust grant has supported the coalition’s work. Trainings were conducted to teach affordable housing residents, homeowners, staff, board members, and others how to advocate for affordable housing initiatives. Coalition members were active at the

State Capitol advocating for initiatives.

Habitat for Humanity of Oregon led the effort in advocating for House Bill 2690, creating property tax exemptions for non-profit housing developers (like Habitat) who purchase property for the purpose of building low-income homes. Many Habitat supporters took part in Habitat’s special housing advocacy day at the Capitol in February.

In July, our efforts paid off when Governor Brown signed the bill into law. Now, Habitat will receive property tax exemption for seven years or until the house is sold. The exemption saves thousands of dollars,

enabling us to develop properties more quickly, serving more families in need.

We’re excited about our advocacy efforts and grateful for the collaboration among affordable housing organizations throughout the community and around the state. If you’d like to become more involved in this aspect of our work, I invite you to contact me personally.

-DonGriffin,ExecutiveDirector

Habitat is delighted to welcome Ted Szal, our new Site Supervisor for our home repair program, A Brush With Kindness. Ted has over 40 years of construction experience. He is looking forward to utilizing his skills working with volunteers on projects where a minor repair can make a major difference!

Do you know someone who would benefit from a minor exterior home repair? We are seeking homeowners who are elderly, disabled, and/or veterans, and need assistance in maintaining their home. Eligible repairs include exterior painting, accessibility ramps, gutter and fence repair, deck and stair repair, and overgrown brush removal. Call (541) 741-1707 for an application.

VOLUNTEER CELEBRATION

HABITAT HAPPENINGS

Summer fundraisers a huge success! Thanks to Ninkasi, Hop Valley, The Bier Stein, and our local Woodcraft Store, we raised $1,800.00 to help families live in safe, decent housing. Join us again at Hop Valley on October 27 for Hops for Hope!

Annual Fundraising Campaign is now underway. Your support is more important now than ever. Our goal is to raise $25,000 to celebrate 25 years of helping families realize their dream of living in a home of their own. Your donation will change lives, strengthen neighborhoods, and build better communities for the next 25 years and beyond. Please make a gift today!

Order Your Holiday Poinsettias Now! Place your order soon to reserve these beautiful holiday classics. Last year’s event sold out, so don’t delay, as supply is limited. The gorgeous flowers, locally grown by Johnson Brothers Greenhouses, have extraordinary quality, size and color. Add holiday cheer to your home and office, or give them as gifts. Also available are $25 gift cards - a perfect gift for the gardener on your list! Give the gift of hope by ordering several poinsettias and gift cards today.

Download the order form at www.sehabitat.org, then email to [email protected], call the office at (541) 741-1707, or bring to the ReStore. Orders must be pre-paid with check or credit card. Order by November 2 for best selection. Flowers will be available for pick up in the ReStore in late November. Tip - bring a box for easy transportation!

On September 13, Habitat celebrated our many dedicated volunteers, and our 25-year anniversary of serving the Springfield/Eugene community! Volunteers came out for a family-friendly event at Island Park. They enjoyed live music from Slightly Retro Jazz, games, prizes, Habitat history, and more.

With 51 new homes and 11 home repairs completed since 1990, there is a lot to celebrate at Habitat this year! Volunteers were recognized for their contributions of time and talent, which have made this all possible. Mayor Christine Lundberg spoke about her involvement as a Women Build volunteer and at other Habitat events,

and pledged her ongoing support for homeownership programs. Habitat homeowner and volunteer, Misty Mainville, spoke about the joy of interacting with volunteers during the construction of her home - volunteers who were always thrilled to be on the build site!

Thank you to all Habitat volunteers - in the ReStore, on the build site, in the office, at events, on our Board of Directors and committees, and beyond. You make an incredible impact on affordable housing every day!
