FALLS: INCREASE YOUR AWARENESS, ASSESSMENT AND INTERVENTION Workshop No: F14-10 Date: Friday, October 10, 2014 Time: Registration: 7:45 a.m., Workshop: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Location: Best Western Plus, Bloomington, MN Contact Hours: 7 Presenter: Shani T. Johnson, MPT, DScPT, CMPT Designed for: PT/PTA/OTR/COTA Workshop Fee: Early: $188; Regular: $208; call for group rates Description: As health care providers, we need to be able to readily identify an individual at risk of falls. For many, falls can be fatal and early identification can prevent injury. Fortunately, most who have decreased balance and instability can be treated successfully, reducing the overall risk of falls and resultant injury.

This course is designed to take the clinician to a higher level of identification for risk of falls, to expedite the process of evaluation and effective treatment interventions and assist in injury prevention. The course content is intended to meet the needs of those individuals seeking to sharpen their screening and evaluative skills and to learn specific ideas for immediate intervention.

Shani Johnson, MPT, DScPT, CMPT, an experienced outpatient orthopedic physical therapist who has practiced under direct access for a number of years, will share her knowledge in many of the screening tests that will help readily identify individuals at risk of falls. Her enthusiasm for physical therapy and her desire to enhance critical thinking skills as a physical therapist make her presentation interesting, enjoyable and beneficial…with immediate clinical applicability.

As a result of this presentation, you will gain a deeper understanding of risk identification and intervention options for individuals who may fall. Objectives: At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to: • Readily identify risk factors of falls • Understand the current concepts of balance and control for fall prevention • Identify and demonstrate the rationale and strategies for fall prevention • Develop a screening/examination process for the patient at risk of falls • Understand systems that can contribute to a fall • Utilize various types of functional balance tests • Develop and integrate functional balance tests for outcomes measures and treatment planning • Differentiate various types of treatment interventions, and apply to patient care • Identify red flags that may be contributing to risk of falls Agenda: 7:45 a.m. Registration 8:00 Introduction to course content 8:15 Systems review 9:45 break 10:00 Systems review continued (with case

Objectives for Superficial Physical Agent Modalities and Ultrasound are: Theoretical Training:

1. Explain the rationale, clinical indications, and physical properties for use. 2. Describe physics and physiology related information for physical agents; includes

a. types of heat and cold transference; thermal conductivity of tissues, matter and air b. factors affecting tissue responses to heat and cold c. biophysical effects in normal and abnormal tissues

3. Explain the advantages and disadvantages, and precautions and contraindications. 4. Explain the precautions and contraindications.

CRITICAL EVALUATIVE AND ASSESSMENT SKILLS TO DETERMINE THE MUSCULO-SKELETAL VS. MEDICAL PATIENT – RED FLAGS Workshop No: F14-40 Date: Friday, November 7, 2014 Time: Registration: 7:45 a.m.; Workshop: 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Location: Best Western Plus, Bloomington, MN Contact Hours: 6 Presenter: Shani T. Johnson, MPT, DScPT, CMPT Designed for: PT/PTA Workshop Cost: Early: $188; Regular: $208; call for group rates Description: As rehabilitative and wellness clinicians, we are often the first medical professional an individual encounters, especially with the success of direct access implementation. As a team PT, OT and additional health care professionals, we spend a significant amount of time with patients, and the objective findings discovered are often very important in the total picture of a diagnosis. This course is designed to take you to a higher level of red flag identification, to expedite the process of evaluation and effective treatment interventions and to improve critical thinking. The course content is intended to meet the needs of those individuals seeking to sharpen their evaluative skills to decipher musculo-skeletal versus serious medical conditions. Shani Johnson, MPT, an experienced outpatient orthopedic physical therapist who has practiced under direct access for a number of years, will share her knowledge of many of the systemic diseases that may initially present themselves to the evaluating therapist as musculo-skeletal dysfunctions. Her enthusiasm for physical therapy and her desire to enhance critical thinking skills as a physical therapist make her presentation interesting, enjoyable and beneficial…with immediate clinical applicability. As a result of this workshop, you will gain a deeper understanding of specific assessment skills and clinical differential diagnosis. This will allow you to readily identify serious pathology that may need medical attention rather than, or in conjunction with, therapy intervention. Objectives: At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to: • Understand which type of tissue can produce pain, and the type of pain it produces • Perform a complete subjective evaluation to assist in identifying the nature and severity of patient’s problem • Identify potential red flags provided in the patient’s subjective history • Decipher whether pain/symptom pattern is visceral in nature or musculo-skeletal • Perform basic system scan that can help identify musculo-skeletal dysfunctions and/or red flags of systemic

pathology • Understand selective tissue tension examination principles • Recognize when a patient should be referred back to his/her primary care physical or referring specialist • Recognize patterns associated with autoimmune diseases, and readily identify the potential need for further

medical diagnostics • Recognize and decipher basic pain patterns that may demonstrate systemic pathology • Identify an impending stroke • Identify an impending cardiac event
