WHATS THE PRICE? WORKSHOP FOR SMALL BUSINESSES. Price-setting is the most ticklish part of starting a business. Whether your enterprise is full or part time, the price is the key to success. Paying customers are your lifeblood, but beware the danger of impressive gross receipts hiding a very dinky net profit until it’s too late. We’ll discuss what goes into a full burden hourly rate, different pricing strategies, the impact of fixed vs. variable costs on profitability, and how to time price breaks to ratchet your customer base to higher levels. We’ll look at market niche and matching the competition. Finally, after all is done, the bill: what you write on the bill can endear or annoy customers. Because it’s retained, it can be part of your marketing strategy. This class is perfect for sole proprietorships in home repairs, Craigslist services, craft sales and anyone between 15 and 80 who sells their time and talents for a profit.

ESSENTIALS OF CORPORATE FUNDRAISING“If you build it, they will come…” How do you build a simple corporate partnership plan that fits the mission, size, and vision of your nonprofit? Build with intention! Although the objectives of the for-profit corporate world and nonprofits appear to be diametrically opposed, the instinct to improve the quality of life for human development provides a platform for pursuing mutual partnerships with long-term value. Many companies have a certain percentage of profits earmarked for corporate social responsibility and sponsorship projects. It is to their advantage that this amount is expensed by year-end, and nonprofits that are able to make a good case for support can find a good fit for the impact that they want to make in their communities.

Join me for a conversation about the swirl of exchange that binds the nonprofit and business communities in making social impacts. In this course, participants will learn how to develop and maintain a simple plan for building and negotiating enduring ties that bind your intention with the corporate world. Begin from a position of strength and develop a marketable plan with a depth in approach that identifies a mission and programmatic fit, framework with clear valuation and recognition objectives and negotiable naming opportunities. Offer potential branding opportunities to institutions willing to embrace your organization as an extension of its corporate culture, and employees who support your annual events as volunteers. Continue to clarify the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN… and HOW questions as in tandem with your organization’s vision and options for scalability. From STARBUCKS to the neighborhood florist, you will discover how the range of corporate opportunities – in cash and kind – all help your organization to achieve its fundraising goals.

GRANTWRITING & FOUNDATION RELATIONS Donors with buy-in will go beyond writing a check and deeply invest in the success of your organization if you understand “the art of the cultivation,” and fundraising becomes – “friendraising!” Being part of the fundraising, grantseeking process also relies on the ability to build and sustain relationships after the prospect research, program design, and budgeting phase. This course will teach you the step-by-step elements of a well-developed proposal, large or small, for your local, regional, or international project. You will learn the tips and tricks for building the effective grantmaker relationship; how do you engage your funder from the program assessment/ feasibility phase through the grant lifecycle? You will learn how to align your mission and programmatic needs to fit funders of that universe and to evaluate funder guidelines. You will learn to adapt proposals to individual grantmaker requirements and respond to what they expect from their nonprofit partners. You will learn the critical role your budget plays in developing your proposal narrative. You will learn to evaluate your program and incorporate important aspects of your organizational budge in the grantseeking process in making a cogent case for support in your proposal. In this workshop,we will also consider other tasks such as prospect research, letter of intent, and impact reports. We will discuss some of the examples you have brought to class for clarifications, and absent of that, we will do a class exercise by writing the executive summary to a proposal. This is a course for everyone who is interested in the grantwriting process and those who are trying to refine their grantseeking skills. Bring projects at any level of development for review and discussion. No prior experience is needed.
