As a company invests in the community by giving of their resources, whether it be expertise, volunteer time, product donations or philanthropic dollars, they begin to see benefits such as increased visibility, araction of new talent and a positive reputation in the community. However, corporations frequently find there are challenges to ensuring their philanthropy is strategic, value enhancing and cost effective. There are important concerns such as the amount of staff time needed to manage the program, the knowledge of government relegations and tax implications associated with giving and the cost of managing a grant process. A 2010 report from The Commiee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (a project of the Goldman Sachs Public Service Program) states, “To realize meaningful benefits, philanthropy cannot be just another ‘check in the box,’ but rather must be executed no less professionally, proactively and strategically than other core business activities.” Sonoco Products Company, a global provider of innovative packaging solutions, wanted to take their growing corporate philanthropy program to the next level and found the solution in Central Carolina Community Foundation. During its 115 year history beginning in Hartsville, South Carolina, Sonoco has always made giving back to their local community a priority. In 1999, the Sonoco Foundation was formed as the company’s philanthropic arm. The goal of the foundation was to improve the communities where the company has operations with a focus on the areas of education, health and wellness, arts and culture, environment and community development. In 2013, the Sonoco Foundation made cash contributions of more than $2.5 million to 65 nonprofit organizations. 2014 Scholarship Funds and Awards

During the past 30 years, the Community Foundation has inspired generosity by talking about giving. We have grown from a family of 10 funds in 1989 to over 400 funds today. The newest members of our fund family are listed in this publication. They are a diverse lot, ranging from arms collectors to musicians and families to corporations, yet they all share a common philosophy, as stated by Winston Churchill, “We make a living by

what we get; but we make a life by what we give.” Perhaps this is why generosity is so utterly contagious and incredibly fun to celebrate. And, celebrate we will at our annual Best of Philanthropy award celebration on November 13th. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us for an energizing, fun-filled evening.

Our 30 year conversation has been inspired by you – folks whose gifts to Midlands

Gives were contagious and inspired over 5,000 gifts that totaled more than $704,000; folks whose acts of kindness are making a difference every day; folks whose lives are enriched by giving. I look forward to continuing the conversation across the Midlands. I hope you’ll join me.

Cheers! JoAnn

group. These realizations led to the selection of the Community Foundation to manage their grants administration, evaluation, outreach and distribution in March of this year.

Establishing their corporate donor advised fund at the Community Foundation has allowed Sonoco to strengthen their philanthropic efforts. “Our partnership with Central Carolina Community has allowed us to focus on our company’s core business while also positively impacting the communities where we operate, “states Roger Schrum, Vice President of Investor Relations and Corporate Affairs. “Our trust in the Foundation’s expertise in financial performance and management of the philanthropic grants process ensures that our philanthropic resources are distributed where they will have the most impact.” The Community Foundation acts as a centralized point of contact for all requests to the corporation. The requests are compiled, due diligence is conducted and the applications are prepared for review by the Sonoco Grants Committee. Once grant awards have been selected, the Foundation prepares grant agreements, issues checks and conducts ongoing review of the dollars’ expenditure and impact. The Sonoco staff spends less time on paperwork and more time making the decisions that make the community stronger.

Sonoco looks forward to continuing to make an impact in South Carolina in the future. They hope other businesses will follow their example of selecting the Foundation to manage their corporate philanthropy.
