For the friends of the Independent Cat Society, a no-kill cat shelter Fall 2014 #143 Volunteers Make the Difference! Adoptable Cats, Upcoming Events, and more inside! If you’ve spent any time at our shelter or our events, you may have noticed that there are a lot of people involved with the Independent Cat Society. Many different people help do things like answer phone calls and emails, counsel new adopters, comfort and play with our cats, run our fundraising events, and manage the general business of the shelter. Our volunteers work hard to make sure our shelter is the best it can be for our cats and kittens, and it takes many people to ensure that everything is operating as it should. Depending on the day you come to visit, you may never see the same smiling face twice! Even though we do have a small paid staff of wonderful people who clean the shelter as well as feed and medicate the cats, volunteers help us in all aspects of what we do. These invaluable people serve vital roles to ICS. In fact, our shelter would not exist without them. In this issue, we would like to thank all of our volunteers for their service over the years. Without them, we cannot do what we do to help cats in our community. We would also ask others to consider donating their time and talents. Believe it or not, even an hour or two a month can make the difference in the lives of our cats and in the smooth functioning of our shelter organization! Why volunteer with ICS? Your time and commitment helps build the organizational strength of the ICS. You extend our resources as you complete the hands-on “to do” tasks and activities that might not otherwise get completed. You learn new skills and become knowledgeable through networking and using your talents within the organization, and you provide valuable input to the ICS Leadership, While many of our volunteer roles ask that you be over 18 years of age, young people who wish to help can still get in on the act as well! Minors aged 13-18 can definitely assist with fundraisers, baking, crafts, groundskeeping and maintenance, and grooming and socializing our kitties, and we welcome volunteers of all ages to join in wherever they can. Volunteers as young as 10 can enjoy something as simple as coming in and talking with and petting the cats which can make an amazing difference in their lives, and they will most definitely make sure you know how appreciative they are! Interested in pitching in for a great cause? You can use our convenient online form to register as a volunteer: http://zelda23publishing.com/indcatsociety/volunteer-application/. Our volunteer chairperson will get in touch with you, orient you to the shelter and volunteer roles, and help you find the best fit for your talents and available time. President’s Message

Let some of the tranquility of the cat curl into me.

– David Harold Rowbothom

The hectic holiday rush is nearly upon us, and with it comes shorter days, longer nights, colder weather, and of course, snow. And last winter, we certainly saw our share! This year,we may see similar weather patterns of cold and snow develop, according to weatherexperts, so it certainly pays to be prepared. As you make sure that your snowblower isworking properly, that your roof and insulation are sufficient, and that you have enough rocksalt to keep your walk free of ice, consider the animals that you may share yourneighborhood with.

Caring for a feral cat colony has many benefits to both the cats and to the people aroundthem. While community cats are quite resourceful, when you serve as a caretaker you canhelp ensure that they are safe, healthy, and good “neighbors” in your community.

Basic care for feral cats includes providing them with food, water, and shelter, in addition tomonitoring the members and ensuring that all cats are spayed and neutered. This ensuresthat the colony will not become too large, making the cats healthier, helping them live longer, and preventing disease and other issues that can come from overpopulation. Socializedhomeless cats may even be able to be adopted into loving new homes.

We invite you to visit our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Squad Facebook page athttps://www.facebook.com/icstnr to learn more about humane trapping, spay/neuter, andeven building warm, cozy shelters for the feral cats in your community. ICS also offersassisted spay/neuter vouchers to families in need of low-cost care for community cats, andyou can find out more information in the pages of this newsletter, or athttp://www.catsociety.org/about-ics/spay-neuterprogram/.

Want to learn more about feral cat care, including how to build a simple, low-cost shelter?Review the Alley Cat Allies website at http://www.alleycat.org/page.aspx?pid=293 for all ofthe details and a great deal of useful information.

We hope that you will remember the “shadowcats” in your area during the cold winter months, and help them get the help they need to livecomfortably amongst your neighbors.

Sincerely, Staci Trekles, ICS Board President

Hi, I’m Corky, your ICS spokescat! I recently got a letter in my condo from a sponsor who was concernedthat the expenditures for birthday and Christmas cards that we send might be an excessive andunnecessary expense. I assured her that 100% of any gift goes directly, as always, to the cats’ care. Allof the cards and postage are donated by the fabulous volunteers that help me run the SAC program, and we do like to keep in touch with our sponsors to tell them how much they are appreciated!Sponsors’ monthly gifts are the most dependable source of income for ICS. As the prices of food, medicine, vet care, and building maintenance continue to rise, the need for more sponsors is asessential as when the program was first set in motion many years ago.

We always have cats who need people to sponsor them with their generous gifts while they wait fortheir forever homes here at ICS. If you want a sponsor cat of your own, please fill out the coupon at thebottom of this page and tell us what cat would be special to you – male or female, long- or short-haired,tabby, tortie, tuxedo, orange, white, grey, or black. We’ll pick a cat for you, or better yet, you can come tothe shelter, meet our cats and pick your favorite. Sometimes it’s hard to pick just one!

Here are pictures of some of my friends waiting for their forever homes. Won’t you please sponsor oneuntil they are adopted? Half of the cats featured on this page in our last newsletter have already gotten adopted, which means you just mightbe the good luck charm that one of these kitties is waiting for!

Emery Beignet A handsome buff kitty, he was named forthe color of the New Orleans sugary, friedpastry. He loves playing with a toy on astick when he’s not cuddling with hisroomates. He could get along with othercats or blaze his own trail in a forever homeof his own.

Whitey is a top cat in all respects, according to hisroom mom. You can find him perched ontop of a cage in Boppers. An adorablecouch potato, he’s a stunning ragdoll mixwho loves to be cuddled and brushed.Come admire him – he’ll steal your heart!

Gus came to Disco recently when he and hiscompanion Jazz couldn’t adjust to the dogin their new home. At the shelter theyspend time playing with the many kittensthat have recently moved in, but Gus andJazz would love a sponsor to make themtheir special cats.

Holly is a friendly tortie who came to us in thebitter cold of last winter when the womanwho had been feeding her in her garagebrought her to a home that could keep hersafe and warm. Holly would love to haveyou sponsor her until she finds the rightperson to give her a forever home.

Myrtle and Turtle are sister and brother, and they make quite a pair! It was hard for their foster mother togive up this loving duo, but they have adjusted well in Disco because of all the attentionthey got in foster care. Turtle will jump on your lap and purr while Myrtle will often hover, keeping watch from a nearby shelter to be sure her brother is all right. Come meet thisadorable pair soon!
