“Some changes look negative on the surface but you will soon realize that space is being created in your life for something new to emerge.”

~ Eckhart Tolle

In June 2013, Southern Alberta

experienced record amounts of heavy rain, causing catastrophic flooding described by the provincial government as the worst in Alberta’s history. My husband

and I happened to be in Calgary when the banks of the Bow River began to overflow. We had some business meetings in the city and planned to attend a family wedding near Swift Current, Saskatchewan, on the weekend of June 22.

The intense energy of the rain was distracting as it beat against the windows of our RV on Thursday afternoon, June 20. Our two youngest sons arrived safely in the city later that evening to join us for the weekend.

The saying “We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it” gained a whole new meaning for us on Friday morning, with many of the city’s major roadways and bridges closed down. But we were able to make our way out of the city and retrieve my mother from the Calgary airport. We crossed several bridges as floodwaters threatened closures en route to Swift Current.

Thankfully, my cousin had a beautiful wedding ceremony, without incident, at the Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park on the bank of the South Saskatchewan River on Saturday afternoon.

Areas along the Bow, Elbow, Highwood, Red Deer, Sheep, Little Bow and South Saskatchewan rivers and their tributaries were affected. According to reports from the Government of Alberta and the Calgary Herald, a total of 32 local states of emergency were declared and 28 emergency operations centers were activated as water levels rose and numerous communities were placed under evacuation orders.

Four people were confirmed dead as a direct result of the flooding and over 100,000 people were displaced throughout the region. Some 2,200 Canadian Armed Forces troops were deployed to help in the flooded areas. Preliminary estimates suggest damage from the flood could be between $3 billion and $5 billion. The emotional, social and economic effects of the June floods were felt in these southern Alberta communities, across our beautiful province and even across the country.

In the end, the Calgary Stampede came together with serious conviction only a few short weeks later. Receding waters gave way to a massive cleanup, spontaneously aided by dozens of volunteers and complete strangers who assisted affected homeowners and businesses.

A few short weeks before the flooding occurred, our journalist Jennifer Worley met Grande Prairie businessman Dave Doyle in a Calgary arena, where Dave’s son was playing in a hockey tournament. In her interview with Doyle for this issue’s cover story, Jennifer relates Doyle’s personal mantra: “Be good. Do good. Always.”

Dave states, “When I say ‘be good,’ I’m putting an energy or a vibe out there to people to be good. For me it means to be good in everything you do. You do good things, you think good things and you’ll just be a good person.”

Sometimes when we face disruptions on our journey, we may initially feel overwhelmed. No doubt some of us get stuck holding on to the drama and misfortune of our circumstances, while countless others, people like Dave Doyle, persevere, think positively, get stuff done and then pay it forward. Having the conviction to see past life’s hurdles and to continue being good and doing good is what creates better tomorrows—in our own lives and for those around us, too.

The Fall 2013 issue—our biggest ever!—is dedicated to our men: our friends and loved ones. Inside you will find our special Men’s Health feature, for which Guided Synergy staff interviewed five men who live and work in Western Canada. We hope their stories and the articles in this issue inspire our readers, male and female, on their journey to living a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

Many thanks to our loyal advertisers, readers and contributing writers for their continued support and encouragement as we expand into new regions across Alberta and British Columbia, increasing from three to four issues annually in 2014!

In the past, spas were predominantly a women’s domain. But over the past

several years, we have seen many men turn from macho culture to the metro movement, and the stigma attached to men’s spa treatments has decreased significantly. And just as men are discovering the benefits of spas, spas are realizing the importance of appealing to the modern man who is looking for a no-nonsense approach.

So, what can you expect during your visit to the spa? What is appropriate and what should be avoided? Start by arriving early for your appointment to avoid frustration and anxiety. This also allows you time to complete any necessary consultation forms, which will ensure that you receive targeted therapy and a customized approach.

Arriving early gives you the opportunity to prepare not only mentally but also physically. A warm shower combined with steam will facilitate muscle relaxation and prepare your skin for rejuvenation. Cleansing your skin before waxing treatments will yield better results. If you’re receiving any kind of facial therapy, shave prior to the session, leaving your skin a blank canvas, receptive to treatment.

Feeling comfortable is important for a relaxing experience. Spas offer plush robes, which allow you to move easily between therapies. Undergarments are optional; your therapist will ensure that you modesty is protected and your dignity remains intact.

Before settling in, ensure that you have silenced all your electronic devices or, ideally, turned them off. And use your “spa voice.” Your fellow spa goers are trying to detox from technology, unwind and find calm. Behind each closed door is someone indulging in me-time.

Remember that each therapy is unique and tailored according to your needs, so don’t hesitate to communicate with your therapist. He or she will offer high-quality therapies based on the information you provide, be it about health concerns or your preferences in pressure or product selection.

The male skin-care industry is growing rapidly. As a therapist might say, men

are starting to see the light! Spas offer numerous options for targeted, results-driven treatments that improve skin fitness, from cleansers to sunscreens. Ask your therapist for recommendations and start with something you feel comfortable with.

Spas focus not only on pampering but also on wellness. Your spa might have a private workout area with exercise equipment and free weights—and a calmer environment than most gyms. Hoping to find inner peace? Enquire whether your spa offers yoga. If you are planning to work out, remember to bring appropriate fitness clothes and shoes.

Body therapies manage stress and promote healing. Relax with a massage after a long day at the office or an intensive workout. Infrared sauna therapy can detoxify the body, increase circulation and induce relaxation.

You like to put their best foot forward, but when was the last time that foot had a

good buff? Foot therapies are a great way of relieve stress and detect possible health issues. Don’t be embarrassed about the condition of your feet—your therapist is there to help transform them. If you have sensitive feet or are extremely ticklish, inform you therapist and he or she will adjust the treatment. Distraction, such as reading, watching television or indulging in a treat from the wellness bar, might take the edge off.

Before you leave, book your next visit so that you can reserve the date, time and therapist of your choice. Get in the habit of scheduling regular time for yourself. Both men and women experience a great deal of stress in their everyday lives, and spas can help you manage that stress and take care of yourself. Now that you know the ins and outs, the dos and don’ts, what’s stopping you?

Recently I spent a week in the Pacific Northwest, alternating between walks

along the ocean and hikes through the rainforests. As it was the first week of September, with everyone heading back to school, it was quite secluded.

My accommodation was a rustic cabin with a woodstove—no television, no telephone (not even cell phone reception) and no Internet access. The only sound was the gentle crashing of the waves upon the shore.

As there were often no people in sight, the experience, at times, felt surreal. Walking along the beach in the morning mist, the vast sea on one side and towering spruce trees on the other, I imagined what it must have been like for the earliest people who settled there.

It is not surprising, I mused, that the Native peoples were so spiritual. This kind of land is infused with spirit. One cannot help but feel immense awe, regardless of the direction to which the eyes are cast. Breathing in the clear, moist air feels like breathing in the spirit of the earth.

Entering the rainforest is like entering a sacred realm. It is so quiet. The tall trees, hundreds of years old, reach up to the sky. The sunlight filters through, illuminating the forest floor, which is a world unto itself. Green life sprouts everywhere, be it mosses, ferns, or new little trees, often growing out of nurse logs—huge trees that have fallen to the ground. These massive trunks, even in death, nurture new life. The forest continually renews itself.

It also renews those who venture there, for it is the original natural habitat of humans. I also believe it speaks to us, infusing us with deep wisdom. I look forward, in the weeks and months ahead, to decoding its messages. And, of course, I shall return

Trauma is not a common topic of discussion. It hurts. That alone is a big enough reason, but it isn’t the

only one.

Most of us associate trauma with events like 9/11 or tsunamis or wars in the Middle East. We are less likely to talk about the loss of a pet or a move to a new home or a divorce as a trauma— especially if that move or that divorce was a life change that we chose for ourselves.

The fact is this: There are no rules about which life events will or won’t have a deep impact on us. Anything that signifies a change in our sense of self or a change in life as we know it can be traumatic.

A trauma is any circumstance, situation or incident where we perceive both a threat and our inability to overcome that threat. This element of helplessness, or powerlessness, is key to an event’s being traumatizing. We are never traumatized by the things we think we can handle.

The saddest part is that, though we all experience trauma in life, many of us continue to struggle with past experiences. We flounder around on our own, in a state of “I’ve come into contact with unbearable pain and am doing my best to cope, putting one foot in front of the other to get through the day.” Not knowing what help is available to us, we are stuck in a state of desperation. We know we can’t go on like this anymore, but we have no idea what else to do. Nothing we’ve tried has really helped and, despite how much time has passed, we still can’t “just get over it.”

But wait! There is so much more to learn and understand about trauma and our natural responses to danger. Most of us are taught little about what is going on in our bodies—in our nervous systems and in our physiology—that affects our behaviour, memory, mindset and emotional state. We might learn a bit about stress and our fight-or-flight response, but few of us know about the freeze response that is activated when

we perceive that we can’t effectively get away or fight back.

Both the fight-or-flight response and the freeze response originate in our nervous system. Both are subconscious; they are reflexes, rather than something we choose to do. And both are viable defense mechanisms—not weaknesses. They are meant to be short-term responses to danger, not a way of life.

The fight-or-flight response is a reaction to a perceived threat. Chemicals released during this response increase energy and power. The physical reaction includes high arousal and elevated heart and breathing rates. Blood flow is diverted away from

your extremities and toward your core. Your vision narrows to focus on the threat.

Contrast this with the freeze response, which is a reaction to the perceived inability to overcome a threat. Released chemicals inhibit pain and memory. The physical response can be dramatic—you might physically freeze or collapse—or can be more subtle, taking place only internally. You might shut down and become numb, or disassociate from what is going on around you.

Most definitely, we aren’t taught the very important fact that we are each born with natural mechanisms for discharging the energy that has been mobilized and then frozen during a trauma. When the trauma is fully processed, through our

bodies, the message that the perceived threat has been overcome finally gets relayed throughout our entire system. However, until that time—as long as the trauma remains unresolved—our tissues carry around the message that danger still exists and we are not yet safe.

Pause for a moment to consider what this signifies. If your body is telling your brain that you are in danger, you are primed to search for the source of threat—and you will always find one. Even benign events will become sources of stress, and you will overreact to stimuli that otherwise wouldn’t phase you.

However, once the freeze of trauma has been dissipated, this sends a message all through you not only that you are now safe and no longer need to be in defensive mode, but also that you have overcome a threat that you once perceived as meaning imminent death. This gets interpreted on a cellular or organic level, by your body and your self, as evidence that you are now stronger and more resilient than this awful thing that had such great power over you.

It is only through a willingness to approach our deepest wounds that we are finally able to resolve them. All it takes is conversation. The more we talk about trauma, the more we learn and understand, and the safer we feel around our own internal and external experiences in life

Cora Rennie of Cold Lake, Alberta, is the creator of the Feeling Better campaign and the author of Touching Trauma: Healing Life’s Deepest Wounds. She believes that feeling better is about becoming better at feeling. This is accomplished by learning to feel safe in any feeling, and the first step toward safety is resolving past traumas.

Have you ever noticed that little voice in your head? “What little voice? Is

she crazy?” Yep—there it is! We all have that voice, and it drones on all day long! It’s the voice that says, “You’re too fat”; “You can’t do that!”; “Who do you think you are?”; “It won’t work anyway, so why bother?”

We wouldn’t put up with a friend or staff member talking to us like this. Yet we live with this constant chatter, and it keeps us from having a healthy, love-filled life. Now here’s the catch: That little voice also keeps us alive. This is important to acknowledge and respect.

The voice comes from a pair of small, almond-shaped groups of nuclei in your brain called amygdala (a-mig-duh-luh). They are part of what is sometimes referred to as our lizard brain or reptilian brain, as it is programmed from our primitive days and triggers our fight-or-flight response to danger: “Run! You could be eaten by a saber-toothed tiger!” When that tiger approaches, the fear your amygdala triggers is your most efficient means of survival.

Guess what? In our modern lives, few of us face tigers. The car that cut you off in traffic is not a tiger. Your relationship breakdown is not a tiger. Your struggles with health and weight are not tigers. The presentation you are about to make is not a tiger. Yet the fear response is still triggered in your amygdala, deep inside your brain.

So if we’re not living with tigers anymore, how do we break free of this automatic response of fear and anxiety? By engaging the front part of our brain, the prefrontal cortex (right behind the forehead). To bypass fear and move on to bliss, hang out in the prefrontal cortex, where we think, problem solve, create, imagine and ponder abstract notions like freedom, love, community responsibility and self-awareness.

Here’s how to let go of anxiety and fear to create the life you want:

Face the fear. What are you afraid of? Simply recognizing, honouring and respecting that your amygdala is responding to keep you alive gives you power to choose to step out of fear. It also engages your prefrontal cortex so that your energy is focused in your powerful thinking centre, not

in your primitive amygdala.

Keep sucking air. Breathing deeply not only brings oxygen to your brain to help with problem solving, it also allows you to be fully present in the moment. When you focus on your breathing, you enter into a meditative state that increases the activity in the prefrontal cortex.

Focus your thoughts. Stimulate your prefrontal cortex by standing strong for what you desire and focusing uninterrupted thought on how you exist inside your desired outcome. This allows helpful answers, people and serendipitous events to come to you easily.

Be thankful. Appreciation and gratitude stimulate the prefrontal cortex. Thinking positively is a renewing type of energy and it takes you out of victim mode and into an empowering perspective. Move from “He’s an *@%$Y#! for cutting me off in traffic” to “Hey, thanks for the extra time I get to spend in the car listening to music.”

Keep a journal. When something distressing happens, use a blue pen (not the computer) to write a detailed description of what happened and, specifically, how you felt. (The colour blue stimulates the pleasure parts of your brain—specifically around safety and security. Just think of how many banks use blue in their logos.) Later, review what you’ve written to see the reality of what occurred compared to how you interpreted it. This will help when the next wave of fear starts up. You may not be able to prevent the fear just yet, but you will have new insight on managing it.

Talk to someone. I often joke about not being able to see the alien plastered to your own face. Other people can see almost immediately what is going on. Simply talking to someone with another perspective (choose wisely!) can help you to find an empowering view and a path into health, bliss, joy, love—and, of course, weight loss.

Try hypnotherapy. When you are relaxed you can access your subconscious mind to see what is disempowering you. Uncovering what was holding you back in life allows you to break free of it and create what you want:

health, energy, happiness, love, financial freedom. Hypnotherapy is highly effective in training your mind to your benefit. You are in complete control and will remember the entire experience.

We want our amygdala to kick in when we really need it. But most of the challenges we face in our everyday lives don’t warrant a tiger-level response. Neurologically, the social stressors in our lives are triggering the same response as if a tiger were attacking. We can train ourselves to see that these stressors are not real—they are only created inside our mind—giving us the freedom and energy to pursue what we truly want and to live a life we really love.

Jill Fischer is an advanced hypnotherapist who uses hypnotherapy, neuroscience technology devices and stress assessments to help clients reach their goals with weight loss, smoking cessation, sleep, public speaking, posttraumatic stress disorder and more. She teaches them how the brain and the conscious and subconscious minds work together to achieve those goals. An international speaker, she has been featured on several TV networks and has shared the stage and teleseminars with Neale Donald Walsch, don Miguel Ruiz, Harrison Klein and Shawne Duperon.

hen Dave Doyle was a teenager, he knew what he wanted to be when he grew up: a business owner. What kind of business

wasn’t on his radar yet, but there was no doubt in his young, determined mind that he would one day own his own business.

Nearly thirty jobs later, including stints as a private investigator, door-to-door salesman and oil rig worker, Doyle, 39, is the owner of two Pita Pit franchises in Grande Prairie. Since opening more than a decade ago, they have become two of the top revenue performers among the company’s three hundred locations in Canada and the United States.

Doyle saw many parts of Peace Country when he was growing up, as his family—parents Celine and Ed and three younger siblings—lived in Donnelly, Peace River, Manning and Dawson Creek. He spoke only French until the age of 5, when he was introduced to English-speaking communities and schools. In 1987 his father, a United Grain Growers district manager for southern Alberta, was transferred to Calgary, where Doyle attended middle and high school.

His youth also included a variety of jobs, beginning at age 12 when he had his first paper route. He enjoyed the freedom that came with a paycheque and was open to new opportunities.

“In all my jobs, growing up, I’d really tried to put myself in the positions of my managers, supervisors and the owners, and it was just natural,” says Doyle. “My

wheels were always turning. I just call it the entrepreneurial spirit.”

After graduating from high school, Doyle still wasn’t certain where his career path would lead, but he knew post-secondary education was the next step. He enrolled at Mount Royal College (now University) and completed a two-year program in criminology, followed by jobs in security and private investigation.

Then a girl led him to Edmonton. Although the personal relationship didn’t last, the move did lead to the next chapter in his career and his life.

Around this time, Doyle also learned something about himself. One day, as he watched talk show host Maury Povich interview individuals with Tourette syndrome, the high energy, fidgeting and unusual tics he had experienced his entire life—which his father referred to as his “habits”—suddenly made sense.

“Without a shadow of a doubt, it explained my life,” says Doyle, who did further research on the condition at the University of Alberta and went in search of experts and doctors. Although the two specialists he spoke to on the phone would not see him, they agreed with his self-diagnosis.

“Everything changed for me. This gave me a way to understand why I seemed to be different from everyone else,” Doyle says. “It felt good to know I wasn’t alone and there was a reason for the weird tics and annoying habits that had plagued me every waking minute of every day of my life, ever since I could remember.”

He continues, “Since then, I’ve seen my successes as accomplishing something in spite of dealing with Tourette’s. It’s the extra challenge that I have to go through that most people don’t. Having said that, I believe everyone has an extra challenge to overcome and a powerful story that can help others. This just happens to be mine.”

Doyle appreciates the role his supportive mother has played in his success: “My mom is one of my best friends. She is my biggest fan and has, for my whole life, always been my best support. She’s been there for me through the good, the bad and the ugly.”

Doyle walked into his first Pita Pit, on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton, thirteen years ago. He was impressed by the fresh concept and the delicious pita. He also noticed how busy the manager was and offered to work part time after he finished his day job at Totem Building Supplies. It was the beginning of his Pita Pit story, one that soon saw him managing the Whyte Avenue location and later a second store in downtown Edmonton.

Always observing and absorbing the way the business ran, Doyle knew there was opportunity for him here, although just what it was wasn’t clear to him yet. Then one day, one of the owners commented that a Pita Pit would soon

be opening in Grande Prairie but did not yet have a franchisee.

“I didn’t say a word. I went home and couldn’t sleep all that night. I went into work the next day, pulled the two owners that were there at the time into the office and gave them my notice,” says Doyle. He confidently informed them, “I’m moving to Grande Prairie—and I’m opening that location.”

Doyle then began calling every relative and friend he had to raise the money he needed. But before anyone could commit, his Edmonton owners made a proposition. They would buy the franchise and Doyle would run it as a managing partner, earning shares and buying them out when the time came. Within two years, he owned 25 percent of the franchise and, with help from his parents, he bought the remaining 75 percent. A year later he opened his second location in downtown Grande Prairie.

As he was succeeding in business, Doyle also met the girl of his dreams, Amanda, 33, while watching the 2002 Olympic gold-medal hockey game between Canada and the United States. The loonie sunk into the ice for good luck worked: the Canadian team won and the couple fell in love. They have been married for eight years and

have two boys, Ashton, 10, and Rhys, 9.

Reflecting on his quick decision to move to Grande Prairie and open the Pita Pit, Doyle says it was a defining point in his life. He calls it his think-and-grow-rich moment, referring to the 1937 book by Napoleon Hill. For Doyle—who is inspired by many authors, including motivational speaker and writer Earl Nightingale; Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad Poor Dad; and Ken Blanchard, author of Raving Fans—there was more at play than just a good head for business.

“There’s a lot working outside of us that we do not understand. Whether or not we see it or our peers and society choose to believe it, it is there. It’s working all the time and it’s all based on energy and thought,” says Doyle. “As Earl Nightingale says, what you truly think about most of the time is what you become.”

Making the right choice is something Doyle has turned into a personal mantra: Be good. Do good. Always. Known as the “high-five guy”—he prefers this to a handshake because it’s fun, energetic and memorable—he’s also known for his parting words: Be good. On the surface, this may sound like a suggestion to be on one’s best behaviour, but that’s not what he means.

"You do good things, you think good things and you’ll just be a good person.”

“When I say ‘be good,’ I’m putting an energy or a vibe out there to people to be good. For me it means to be good in everything you do. You do good things, you think good things and you’ll just be a good person.”

He shares this philosophy with his employees to help them realize their own potential, as well as with Grande Prairie’s holistic community. He’s been nurturing a relationship with this community since he brought the Pita Pit concept to the first health and wellness expo in the city more than a decade ago.

“Obviously I have a very strong belief in my products because of the health aspects. Because of that, I’ve always felt that anything I do, I want it to be something that’s good for people,” says Doyle.

At the expos, where he’s become a regular, Doyle has met many holistic practitioners and experienced some of the modalities they offer, including Reiki, reflexology and energy healing. He is intrigued by the numerous quality products offered by practitioners and by the business model many of them use: network marketing. Equally fascinating is their approach to doing business, which centers on the product rather than on profit.

“They’re so focused on the product, and not the business. It’s kind of a shift, because they truly believe in the products,” says Doyle. “That started really shifting me into this point of view as well. So now I’m thinking, you’ve got this great business model and you’ve got these amazing products. Now to combine the two would be really cool.”

That is precisely what he has done with his latest business venture, selling Organo Gold coffee and

tea products. Ironically, the product he is now most passionate about was something he initially shunned because of how it was introduced to him by a friend and business colleague.

“It came to me on the business side of things, and I completely resisted and rejected it until I experienced the health and wellness benefits,” says Doyle. After his friend made several failed pleas, he finally agreed to help her win a sales contest and bought a box of the instant coffee, made from Brazilian arabica bean and containing ganoderma. Much to his surprise, it tasted good and left him feeling energized and sleeping better, without the side effects of his usual cups of coffee. He hasn’t had a regular cup of coffee since. In the four and a half years he has been selling the product, he’s seen many examples of people improving their health.

“That’s why I do what I do, combining health and wellness with business, like I did—organically I guess—with Pita Pit. I just saw the concept, knew it was good and ran with it because I believed in it. And selling Organo Gold is the same kind of thing. This has become my driving passion.”

Doyle’s connections with the holistic community and his business experiences continue to inspire him to work on his own health and wellness.

“I think the very first thing to take care of is mental health, emotional and spiritual, which I

think all fits together, because if you don’t feel right in your head and your heart, you can’t do anything with your body anyway,” says Doyle, a hockey dad who also plays the sport to keep in shape.

Doyle has also connected with a local support group for people with Tourette syndrome and hopes that he can inspire anyone in his shoes, particularly youth, to reach their potential.

“I know that kids growing up with Tourette’s, especially with verbal or obvious physical tics, deal with a lot of stuff, internally and often externally. So if I can help even a handful of people do something beyond what they thought they could, or be a source of motivation or inspiration by sharing my story and successes, I’m doing my part to make the world better for someone else.”

Make-Ahead Vegetarian Moroccan StewINGREDIENTS Original recipe makes 6 servings

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cumin ½ teaspoon ground ginger ¼ teaspoon ground cloves ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric 1/8 teaspoon curry powder 1 teaspoon kosher salt

1 tablespoon butter 1 sweet onion, chopped 2 cups finely shredded kale 4 (14 ounce) cans organic vegetable broth 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained 1 tablespoon honey 4 large carrots, chopped 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and diced 3 large potatoes, peeled and diced 1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained ½ cup chopped dried apricots 1 cup dried lentils, rinsed 1 teaspoon ground black pepper, to taste 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional)

1 tablespoon water (optional)

DIRECTIONSCombine cinnamon, cumin, ginger, cloves, nutmeg, turmeric, curry powder, and salt in a large bowl; reserve.

Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Cook the onion in the butter until soft and just beginning to brown, 5 to 10 minutes. Stir in the shredded kale and reserved spice mixture. Cook for 2 minutes or until kale begins to wilt and spices are fragrant.

Pour the vegetable broth into the pot. Stir in the tomatoes, honey, carrots, sweet potatoes, potatoes, garbanzo beans, dried apricots, and lentils. Bring to boil; reduce heat to low.

Simmer stew for 30 minutes or until the vegetables and lentils are cooked and tender. Season with black pepper to taste. If desired, combine optional cornstarch and water; stir into stew. Simmer until stew has thickened, about 5 minutes.

Make-Ahead Tip: If making ahead or freezing, prepare stew through Step 3. Simmer for 5 minutes over low heat; remove from heat and cool in the pot or in freezer-safe container. Transfer to the fridge (store for up to 3 days) or freezer. The vegetables store better if not fully-cooked prior to refrigeration or freezing. When ready to eat, (if frozen) thaw in refrigerator for 24 to 48 hours; pour into a pot, bring to a boil, and simmer until heated through.

What do you do for a living and where do you work?I’m a licensed heavy duty mechanic, but I currently work as a shop foreman for Precision Well Servicing.

Describe what a healthy lifestyle looks like to you. To me, health includes the physical, emotional and spiritual. The less stress you have, the better—and it’s important to learn how to manage the stress you have. Eating properly and taking time to enjoy the important stuff, like family, are both part of a healthy lifestyle.

Describe a defining moment in your life.deciding to take on my drinking problem started me on the journey I’m on now. That was over twenty years ago now!

Have you had any health challenges? Not really. I wrecked the rotator cuff in my shoulder, when I took a misstep and fell off my truck. I waited six months for surgery and then had six months of recovery. I used quantum touch and other energy work with the help of my wife, Leanne, and friends. I have learned to stay active and watch my diet.

What advice would you pass on to other men who may be looking for a more balanced, healthier lifestyle?don’t let your pride get in your way. Look beyond that male ego and that macho BS! don’t be afraid to explore; you don’t have to jump on every bandwagon—find one you like that works for you! Talk to the women—they like to help!

Where do you see yourself ten years from now?Travelling and motorbiking, getting back into photography and playing my guitar, which currently has cobwebs on it.

I’m looking forward to having the time to do all this and to being carefree!

I never met, died penniless and alone from an alcohol overdose. Scares like this keep me from an unbalanced lifestyle. yoga with katie is so much fun! Being on my mat is like being a kid—a balance of depth, fun and lightness.

How have you overcome your health challenges? What I’ve been through, as well as asthma, allergies, addictions and skin cancer, has been a huge challenge. yoga saved my butt! Meditation, cleanses, counselling, guide cards, acupuncture, twelve-step groups, journalling, books, being open and honest, making light of situations, and my profound, beautiful friends have been invaluable.

What advice would you pass on to other men who may be looking for a more balanced, healthier lifestyle? don’t pretend you’re better or worse than you are. Describe what a healthy lifestyle looks like to you.Having a balance of work, exercise, eating well and getting lots of sleep. Also, making sure you get personal time.

Describe a defining moment in your life.Becoming a father. After my wife Jaime’s C-section, I got to carry my daughter down the hallway to the maternity ward. Holding her for the first time was a very defining

moment, knowing she would look up to me as she grew up.

Have you had any health challenges? No, just a couple of sports injuries. However, I did realize that I needed to change my habits. I started doing the P90X home fitness program about two years ago. Learning how to live healthy was not an overnight decision. I started with P90X and then learned how to follow their healthy eating guide. I did a lot of research online and in Guided synergy Magazine, which I found very interesting. P90X has a yoga segment that I started doing, and then I researched mediation and relaxation to incorporate mind, body and soul.

What advice would you pass on to other men who may be looking for a more balanced, healthier lifestyle?Make it a priority to live this way. Exercise every day—work it into your daily routine, like brushing your teeth. Make sure you do it and don’t make excuses for why you can’t. Planning is very important, whether it’s planning meals or workouts or whatever. It’s good to have a plan but to stay flexible and be willing to change.

Where do you see yourself ten years from now?I’m not sure where I’ll be living or whether I’ll be working outside the home again, but I see myself still being actively involved with my girls and living the same way, with regular exercise. Going with the flow!

What do you do for a living and where do you work?My wife, Marla, and I own Self Connection Books in Calgary. I focus on business development,

marketing and our use of technology.

Describe what a healthy lifestyle looks like to you. Since my heart attack last year, I have dramatically decreased my intake of sugar and manufactured foods. I consume fewer preservatives and breads and more leafy greens, vegetables, fruits and smoothies. I eat small meals throughout the day, instead of a couple of large meals. I walk my dog a lot and do some running to keep my heart rate in a moderate zone, get proper sleep and take supplements. I also have at least a half hour of quiet time first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

Do you feel that you have balance in your life? No, and I feel that this is a major issue for many men. I work too many hours. I don’t do things for myself, spend enough time outdoors or pay enough attention to my personal life or my family.

How have you overcome your health challenges?I’ve had kidney stones twice, two hernia surgeries and a heart attack. I realized the correlation between emotions and my beliefs and how they affect my body. I did a lot of reading to educate myself and made many changes.

What advice would you pass on to other men who may be looking for a more balanced, healthier lifestyle? Be aware of what your inner voice is telling you. If you’re feeling unwell, seek help to find out what’s wrong before it’s too late. It’s a choice—age doesn’t matter. deal with stress, since it’s a real killer and you may not like its consequences. Describe what a healthy lifestyle looks like to you.Growing organic food; having a morning ritual, including meditating and doing the five Tibetan rites; chopping wood and carrying water; smiling.

Describe a defining moment in your life. In my 20s, I lived on a trap line with the Cree in Northern Alberta. Early one spring morning, we went to check some beaver traps far in the bush. We had to build a bridge over thin ice to get to them. Native people have the greatest respect for all of nature, including the animals that feed them. We would retrieve our catch even if it took us until dusk—and it did. We had to spend the night, with not even a blanket and the temperature well below freezing. We made a shelter from some low-hanging fir branches. The next morning, Charlie discovered that a beaver he was skinning was pregnant. Although there was no water coming from his eyes, he was crying big time. He said, “I do not know how to read or write. This is all I know how to do. But you do not have to do this.” So I walked out of that life that day.

Where do you see yourself ten years from now? Living in the moment.

What advice would you pass on to other men who may be looking for a more balanced, healthier lifestyle? Spend as much time as you can in nature, and grow your own food.

What’s your idea of a perfect day? After waking up early beside my lover, I do my morning

ritual and have a healthy breakfast. Then I let the chickens out, collect eggs, and check on the greenhouse. After that I work on some sort of creative project.

Q: How did you go from living in a small apartment, practically broke, to the successful and fulfilled person you are today? How did you get yourself to wake up and start taking action?

AR: I got pissed off, plain and simple. That’s what turned it around for me because the anger of who I was becoming forced me to change my life. The fact is it really wasn’t too long ago when I was living in a stark, 400-square-foot apartment and reduced to washing my dishes in the bathtub. I was 30 pounds overweight, had a dead-end job, and was in relationships that weren’t working. I was extremely unhappy and couldn’t stand who I was because I knew I had the potential to be so much more. I think there are many people who can relate to what I was experiencing, the pain of being in a rut and feeling like there’s no way out. That pain forced me to take action.

There are many people who live in what I call “No-man’s Land,” a place where you’re not really happy, but you’re not unhappy enough to do anything about it. No-man’s Land is a dangerous place. It’s a place where people numb themselves to their dreams. It’s where they dismiss hope and accept what’s in front of them instead of driving toward what they really want in life. I know because I lived there for a time, but I eventually hit rock bottom, and I’m glad I did because it

forced me to take action. My only option for survival was to take action—to summon my courage, determination, faith, compassion, and commitment to transform my life. Only then did I have a future. I learned so much from that experience because I used those negative feelings to fuel my change. For me, I had no choice. I had to change.

I soon started having small successes and used those as building blocks to create more magnified ones. Before long, I was unstoppable. Along the way, I learned there is nothing you can’t accomplish if you effectively tap into your personal power. First, you need to decide what you want. The clearer you are about what you want, the more you empower your brain to come up with answers. Second, take action. Many people tell me they don’t know what to do or they ask “What if I try and it doesn’t work?” All I can say is this: If you try and it doesn’t work, you’re better off than before because you now know what doesn’t work. Next, it’s important to notice what’s working and what’s not. I truly believe that not reaching a goal is part of the game plan because it forces you to dig deeper and really use your full capacity as a human being. The final step is to change your approach until you achieve what you want. How many

times do you need to change your approach? The answer is, until you get it right.

Q: You’ve traveled around the world and worked with millions of people. What are the commonalities you find in the challenges that people face?

AR: For most of my life I’ve always been fascinated with the reasons why people do what they do. Some people may think that it’s different for everyone. I mean, what could a superstar athlete who has thousands of fans chanting his or her name possibly have in common with a mid-level manager at a manufacturing plant? While it’s true they lead very different lives, both have similar needs driving them forward each day. Over the last three decades, I’ve had the privilege of working with over 3 million people in more than 100 countries from virtually every walk of life—everyone from presidents of countries to professional athletes, from managers to moms, from gang members to Fortune 500 CEOs.

What I’ve learned from spending time with people is that no matter what your background or the success you may have had or not had, there are six fundamental needs that we all share in common to get us through our daily lives. The first is a need for certainty—to feel comfortable with your surroundings. Some people reach this need by trying to control every aspect of

their lives, while others may obtain certainty by giving up control and putting every ounce of themselves into their faith. There’s also a need for uncertainty or variety, creating an element of surprise and excitement in one’s life. There’s also a need for significance—a belief that one’s life has meaning and importance. I know this sounds extreme, but some people feel significant pointing a gun in someone’s face. On the other hand, someone else feels the same thing by giving back to their community in a meaningful way. There’s also a need for love and connection, to feel a part of something and share with those close to you.

I believe that the force of life is the drive for fulfillment, and that all human beings share this need to experience a life of meaning. Ultimately, fulfillment comes from the need to continuously grow and the need to contribute beyond ourselves. Those are the other two human needs—growth and contribution. How we get these needs met is unlimited. The only question

is whether people will meet these human needs by acting in a way that is destructive or empowering to themselves and others.

Q: You talk about people living an extraordinary life. What is your definition of an extraordinary life?

AR: I think the answer is different for everyone. For some it may be to make a million dollars. For others it may be to make a million dollars and give it away to charity. Some may get ultimate satisfaction from being a great father or a loving mother. Whatever it is, I believe that an extraordinary life is a life on your terms.

How one gets to that place I believe comes from mastering two skills. First is the science of achievement. I can tell you success is no accident in any environment. Whether you are trying to master your business, your finances, your body, or your relationship, there are laws, or rules of the game, that if followed, will lead to consistent success. There are logical patterns of action, and specific pathways to excellence. Those individuals who achieve extraordinary levels of contribution, impact, and success share a commitment to never rest until they discover these patterns and then take action to immediately utilize them.

But none of that means much without the art of fulfillment. I have had the privilege of coaching billionaires, leaders of countries, and sports heroes who have achieved their ultimate goals but still live in frustration, worry, and

fear. I have seen business moguls who lead an industry come unglued in times of crisis. What’s preventing these successful people from being happy? The answer is they have focused only on achievement and not on fulfillment. Extraordinary accomplishment does not guarantee extraordinary joy, happiness, love, and a sense of meaning. When we fail to be fulfilled, it affects everyone around us, and I believe success without fulfillment is failure. There is an art to life. The reason I say art is that it is not a science – there are no specific rules. Art is unique to every individual – what is beautiful to one person can be ugly to another. It is up to you to decide if mastering this second lesson is worthy of your focus and time. These two skill sets feed each other, and can provide momentum to take you to a whole new level.

For me, I know the driving force in my life is to help make a measurable difference in the quality of life for people everywhere. It is my greatest joy to share the tools and strategies for creating

a life of meaning and fulfillment. Nothing drives me more than to see someone or an organization transform and begin to pursue goals with a purpose that inspires them, and gives them a greater sense of meaning – in not only what they do, but who they are.

Q: Have you attempted and failed at anything in recent memory? If so, how did you handle it?

AR: Of course I’ve had failures! Like most people, I’ve had as many, if not more failures than successes. I’ve made mistakes in virtually every area of my life, but what I’ve tried to do is learn from them, not only for my benefit, but to make a measurable difference in other people’s lives.

Unfortunately, we’re programmed to fear this thing called failure, so we try to do everything we can to avoid it, which is pointless. The key is that when you do run aground, instead of beating yourself up for being such a “failure,” remember that there are no failures in life. There are only results. If you didn’t get the results you want, learn from the experience so that you have references about how to make better decisions the next time around. People who fear failure internalize the mistakes they’ve made, and when they try to go after what they want in the future, they might think, “Well, I tried to go after a dream before and look what happened.” This is what keeps people from taking the very action that could move them to accomplish their goals. Too many people want to avoid any hint of a problem or challenge—yet overcoming obstacles is the crucible that forms character.

Every one of us has made our share of mistakes. But what I’ve learned is that life is not about success and failure; it’s about meaning—the interpretation we give to each event in life—and not the event itself.

Meanings are shaped by what we believe and what we value. Each of us can fabricate a different meaning about the same event because we see things through our own tinted glasses. Take, for example, a high-level manager who’s worked for the same company for 30 years and is suddenly laid off. How do you think most people would respond to something like that? But his response is, “This is the best thing that’s happened to me in years—a true gift from God. I can go back to school and get that engineering degree I’ve always wanted. It’s a whole new chapter in my life. I haven’t been this excited in years.” Now, his colleague in the same situation is laid off, but he responds quite differently. He says, “I gave them everything I had. I sacrificed everything, and this is the thanks I get.

God is punishing me. I might as well be dead.”

Same circumstance, different meaning. You cannot overestimate the power of meaning. We create meanings all the time, whether your realize it or not. But when you’re doing it, you also get a corresponding emotion, and then you take action based on that emotion. The first man focused on the situation as a gift, gave an empowering meaning to it, and saw it as a new chapter in his life, which resulted in feelings of excitement, renewed energy, and gratitude. The other manager focused on the lay-off as punishment and experienced feelings of loss, injustice, humiliation, and limitation. Where do you think his actions are going to take him? I mean, given the way this culture operates, he might file a grievance or a lawsuit for wrongful discharge.

I’ve found that we can do or overcome just about anything as long as we look at what happens to us as lessons and opportunities to discover something that’s going to make us better, make us grow, and not as something that’s going to arrest us in some way or keep us in misery. So I don’t consider failing or succeeding an endpoint. I look at how I can give the most empowering meaning to every situation I face. We can use setbacks as excuses to quit something for good, or we can use “temporary” failure as fuel to move us toward fulfillment.

It has been known for centuries that the mind–body connection is of paramount

importance to the state of our physical health. Many alternative modalities, including crystal healing, meditation, Reiki and tao te chi, are holistic, meaning that they work on the body as a whole, not just on physical symptoms.

Crystal healing is a form of energy healing. Our bodies are made up of vibrating particles. When these are out of alignment or blocked, our bodies will manifest physical ailments. Energy healing works on the aura, the subtle field of energy that surrounds the physical body.

Crystal healing practitioners use the vibrational energy of crystals to heal the mind, the spirit and the physical body by restoring a state of balance and harmony. Your session may begin with a detailed mind-and-body discussion to help the practitioner pinpoint the weak points that are affecting your well-being. Your practitioner will then work with you to balance your energies, using the correct crystals to transmute stuck or negative energy. Healing hands and guided meditations are also part of the solution.

It is often believed that health problems are rooted in our chakras, the energy centres in our bodies. Your practitioner may use crystals to construct an energy grid that corresponds to the chakras, thus surrounding you with a

healing energy.

Crystal healing is used throughout the world with great success, both by holistic practitioners and by self-educated people. Patients often feel that their bodies have shifted into a better vibration after the first treatment. As a noninvasive practice, the use of crystals, guided meditation and healing hands can remarkably transform a person’s sense of well-being.

Judith Maesor has been working with spirit for 48 years. She has a diploma in crystal healing from the School of Natural Health Sciences and is a neuro-linguistic programming practitioner and life coach. From Britain, she has been recognized in the Cirencester Gazette for her healing work and has many followers for her incredibly accurate readings. Judy currently works at New Age Books & Crystals in the Kensington area of Calgary, Alberta.

Maybe you are the owner of your own business, the CEO of your company or a

district supervisor. Perhaps you sit on the board of a community organization, lead a men’s group at your church or participate in a Rotary club. You might be a parent. If any of these titles applies to you, then you are a leader, and you likely find yourself stressed out at times. Finding ways to handle stress is important to maintaining both your health and your responsibilities. Today’s most effective stress management tactics may surprise you!

Leaders must meet deadlines, make decisions and answer to others. Decisions can range from making a multimillion-dollar choice for your company to setting a curfew for your daughter. Depending on what’s at stake, the act of standing in your power and making those decisions can affect you physiologically, inducing a stress response. Your shoulders tense, your stomach clenches or you start to sweat. The more your body feels stressed, the tougher it is to handle whatever is going on. Your judgment is affected, you are less focused and you may be quicker to react than usual.

According to Annie McKee, Frances Johnston and Richard Massimilian, authors of “Mindfulness, Hope and Compassion: A Leader’s Road Map to Renewal,” published in the May/June 2006 issue of Ivey Business Journal, leaders experience power stress, a combination of the need to take significant responsibility, to deal with crises and to maintain constant self-control. Effective leaders keep their self-control in the face of chaos and pressure. As much as they might like to reach across the desk and manhandle the guy who just screwed up, they don’t lose it. Maintaining self-control, staying on top of your mood and remaining positive take a lot of energy, which creates even more stress on your body.

Effectively dealing with power stress requires you to find creative ways to renew. We all know that eating right, exercising and getting enough sleep are central to peak performance. But as McKee, Johnston and Massimilian point out, new research highlights additional key approaches that help renewal: cultivating mindfulness, hope and compassion.

Mindfulness is being present, awake and aware of what is going on in the present moment. Some people practice mindfulness by meditating, but there are other ways to be mindful. For instance, you could become more

mindful when you’re drinking your morning cup of coffee. Rather than using that time to check email, find a comfortable chair and just sit. Feel the warmth of the mug. Drink more slowly than usual, focusing on the taste of each sip.

If you have ever seen someone rock in a rocking chair, you might have noticed that he or she seems to enter into a different state. Many problems have been solved by rocking, staring into a fire or driving around a field on a tractor. Becoming mindful for just a few minutes a day has been shown to reduce stress levels. Practicing mindfulness is about just being in the moment. Stop doing and just be.

Having hope is believing in something and having a positive attitude. To manage your stress, cultivate hope in your life. Believing that you’ll find a solution or that things will work out motivates you to keep trying. Being hopeful shows those around you that you have not given up and that you believe in your own skills and abilities and your team’s strengths. This inspires them to keep trying as well. There is a bonus, too: Hope lowers your blood pressure!

Compassion is the third key to renewal. Compassion is made up of two parts: having empathy for others and truly caring about them. Getting to know the people you work with creates a caring environment. Perhaps you have to ask one of your employees to work late. By having consideration for this person, you’ll be more aware of the effect this request has

on his life. Maybe he’s supposed to coach his daughter’s soccer team. Knowing this does not necessarily mean you can change your request, but it might encourage you to acknowledge how working late impacts him and his family. Acts of caring such as this actually invoke a physical response in your body, releasing hormones that help you handle stress better.

By cultivating mindfulness, hope and compassion in your workday and in the rest of your life, you physically help your body deal with the daily stress of being a leader. Take time to practice mindfulness a few minutes a day. Cultivate hope by intentionally choosing a positive attitude. Develop compassion for those around you by being curious and learning about their lives. Your body will thank you for it and you will be a better leader!
