Support Our Kids Scholarship (S.O.K.) Program

The City of Union City feels that it is important for all of the youth in our community to have the opportunity to experi-

ence the various recreational programs that are offered by the Leisure Services Department. The S.O.K. Scholarship Fund offers a limited number of special scholarships for Union City youth 18 years and under who wish to experience a Leisure

Services program but are unable to, due to financial hardship. Scholarships provide 50-75 % of the registration fee, up to a maximum of $200. Scholarships are limited to one program

per youth, per year as long as funds are available and families meet the financial qualifications. For more information and a scholarship application, please call the Holly Community Cen-

ter at 675-5488 or the Kennedy Community Center at 675-5357.

We also would like to encourage the members of our commu-nity to help support the S.O.K. Scholarship program by making contributions with their Leisure Services registrations. Dona-tions can be added on the Leisure Services registration form.

Every dollar counts and is appreciated.

IT’S A VALUABLE RESOURCE!

When you put your leftovers and food-soiled

paper in the green cart, you’re helping to

produce compost, a dark, nutrient-rich resource

used by gardeners, landscapers and farmers.

Food scrap composting in Union City is really

easy. Simply COLLECT leftovers in your kitchen

pail or other convenient container, EMPTY the

food scraps into your green organics cart, and

then SET OUT the cart by the curb once a week

for servicing by Tri-CED’s friendly truck drivers.

All food scraps can be composted• Fruits, vegetables, breads, cereal

• Meat, fish, and bones

• Table scraps, dairy products

• Coffee grounds, filters and tea bags

• Food-soiled paper such as paper towels/plates/

napkins/pizza boxes, wooden chopsticks

• Yard trimmings and unpainted wood

also accepted

PLEASE NO PLASTIC, GLASS, METAL, LIQUIDS, STYROFOAM, PET WASTE or PALM FRONDS.

Food scraps and food-soiled paper are the

largest single item in our waste stream, making

up approximately 35% of what we throw away in

Alameda County. By participating in Union City’s

food scrap composting program you are helping

extend the life of local landfills, reduce greenhouse

gases, conserve resources and save money.

The L.I.T.s were assigned to a Union City Leisure Ser-vices Camp or Park and Playground site. They went through a one week intensive training and then worked closely with leaders to put their training to use in the supervision and leading of activities with campers. Their hard work and dedication made a huge impact in the lives of the campers, leaders and with each other. The growth they showed this summer has far exceeded all expectations by leaps and bounds. City News Your City. Your News.

From the Desk of the City Manager Union City is a wonderful place to live, work, and play. With our cen-tral location, diverse population, great educational institutions, unsur-passed quality of life, and access to public transit make this a city that’s good for business and the communi-ty. Throughout my nine year tenure serving you as City Manager, and with the support of the Mayor and City Council, building strong com-munications pathways is important to residents, businesses, and visitors to our City. City staff and I have been working on revamping the City’s web site, improving our cus-

tomer request system, creating a newsletter and venturing into the realm of social media with Face-book and Twitter. Look for our new website by early next year, but for now, like us on Facebook and fol-low us on Twitter. We would like to hear from you! I hope you will find these communi-cations tools helpful and that im-portant news, events and more about our City is shared. Enjoy the fall and the holiday season upon us. - Larry Cheeves

When a 911 call comes into the Union City Police Department (UCPD), the dispatcher answering the phone will ask questions that include who, what, where, when, location last seen, injuries, descrip-tions, and directions of flight. The dispatchers are also interested if there is alcohol, drugs, and weap-ons involved in the emergency. While the initial dispatcher is asking these questions, there is another dispatcher who is sending police officers to the emergency. These questions help UCPD render assistance and apprehend crimi-nals. The responding police officers receive up-dates, based on your answers, as they drive to the location.

In an age where information is available to citizens at all hours of the day, cities have worked hard to provide technology to allow people to access data about their own communities. Union City is at the forefront of such efforts, having in 2010 adopted Digital Map Products (DMP)’s CityGISTM and CommunityViewTM software products to enable the efficient transfer of geographic information to anyone. For the public, Community View, an inter-active mapping website, was launched to provide details on properties, City ser-vices, and local features. October 27, 2012 marks “Make a Dif-ference Day,” a national event dedi-cated to volunteer service. Created in 1992, it has become the single largest community service effort in the United States, rallying about three million Americans last year. The City of Union City has participat-ed in Make a Difference Day since 1995, bringing City staff and the com-munity together to make improve-ments such as planting trees, remov-ing graffiti, and installing playground equipment. Last year, Union City held four events: a clean water environ-mental project, landscape improve-ments, a painting project and garden care. Visit the City of Union City’s website, UnionCity.org to learn how you can volunteer.

Chaplin's Sports Bistro at 2900 Kohoutek Way, is not your common sports bar. Named after Charlie Chaplin and his influ-ence in the Tri-City area, Chaplin’s is stylish, fun with ample seating and nine large-screen TVs to cheer on your favorite sports team. Open since January 2012, Chaplin’s offers unique dining choices including lum-pia and fish tacos plus your favorite beer on tap and other beverages. Union City resident and co-owner, Alfred Anderson, wanted to open his business here because, “Union City needed something different than the typical sports bar. Chaplin’s is a place where everyone can feel comforta-ble plus enjoy delicious food and beverag-es. Union City is a good fit for our business.”

Chaplin’s Sports Bistro is open from Monday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

CityGISTM is a cost-effective solution for the City to share information across in-ternal departments, a notably difficult task, since it typically requires the hir-ing of additional technical staff and a considerable financial investment. With the help of DMP’s software-as-a-service solution, the City of Union City avoided these issues, and the results are promising — an increased aware-ness of the community and easier ac-cess and sharing of useful information.
