SUMMER EDITION
Dear RA Staff:
It is my hope that you are en-
joying your summer and ex-
cited about your return to AU
in the role of Resident Assis-
tant. The RA Training Com-
mittee has worked diligently
to structure a training pro-
gram filled with opportunities
for learning which will lead to
your success. For returning
RAs, we will rely on the
knowledge, experiences, and
success as a partner in
this learning process.
For those of you who are
new RAs, we look for-
ward to your experienc-
es, questions and ideas
during sessions and
conversations. As a Res-
idential Education pro-
gram engaged in contin-
uous learning and im-
provements, we have
developed some exciting
new goals for the up-
coming year. We have
also added new staff
members to Residential
Education and made in-
novative changes to the
residential curriculum to
provide more guidance
and support in your work
as RAs.
I look forward to your ar-
rival back to campus.
Please get as much rest
as possible and enter

Fall Training is quickly ap-proaching (its only a few weeks away), but you don’t have to wait to get started! Here are some suggestions on things you can do to pre-pare for fall!
Complete any academic/
school related tasks such as
buying books, class sched-
ules etc– you wont have
much free time once training
starts
Decide on and design your
bulletin boards and door tags
– if you have things you
need printed send them to
your RD ahead of time
(contact info is on the last
page)
Each year we go to “Camp”
for two days– make sure you
Timothy Staples is the new Assistant Director for Training and
Leadership Programs. In this role he will provide overall guidance
for staff training and professional development, direct and oversee
residential leadership initiatives, and provide administrative support
for the North and Tenley Campuses. Tim comes to American from
Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. At Miami, he was the Assistant
Director of Residence Life for Diversity Initiatives and Student
Leadership Development and a Visiting Instructor in the School of
Education, Health and Society. Additionally, Tim was the primary
advisor for the RHA and NRHH . Personally, his favorite role in life
is “Uncle Tim,” as he is called by 7 nieces and nephews and his
goddaughter.
What can I do now...

One of the most important things you can
do is prepare for all your other fall com-
mitments, class, clubs, other jobs etc.
“
” have bug spray/sun block and
a sleeping bag! (it’s in cabins
not tents-but you still need lin-
ens!)
Send an e-mail or two to your
fellow staff members introduc-
ing yourself!
Visit
www.residentassistant.com or
www.reslife.net for new ideas!
Most importantly relax and
have fun. Training is long and a
lot of work (we have tons of fun
too) so make sure you are well
rested and ready to return

Can your staff be on top? The point system
Staff Spirit Competit ion has begun!
For the past year Jamila has served as an Artis-
tic Apprentice at The Studio Theatre in Logan
Circle. Prior to her work at the theatre Jamila
graduated from The University of North Caroli-
na at Chapel Hill where she earned a BA in
Dramatic Art and Sociology. While she was at
UNC-Chapel Hill Jamila was a Resident Assis-
tant in addition to holding a counselor position
with the Department of Diversity and Multicul-
tural Affairs.
This past spring at the Spring Training Day, each staff created a staff banner as part of a new staff spirit competition. This is a friendly competition that will run during each training (fall & win-ter), with multiple opportunities to earn points. This is designed to be a fun way for each staff to show spirit.
Now some of you may be won-dering if this means more work,
nope! You wont have to do any extra work, just be positive in the work you are doing. Points will be given for things like atti-tude, correct answers, taking initiative, and more (think House Cup Points in Harry Potter). Some planned ways include AU Shirt day, Hall Pride Colors, and spirit show downs. Points can on rare occasions be taken away, you wont lose points for a wrong answer but you may cost

your staff points for playing with your phone or being extremely late.
The most important thing is you can start earning points right now! On the last page of this newsletter is the first staff chal-lenge! So get to it!!!
