COVER ART & PHOTOGRAPHY: The Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission features a local artist’s work on the cover of each Quarterly Program Guide. If you are an artist and would like to submit digital files, slides, or photos of your artwork, please send them via regular mail (attn: Marketing - Cover Art) and include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for their return. Artwork is also viewed via email at [email protected]. We do not pay for cover artwork, but we do publish a short bio of the artist with information on how he/she can be contacted. The selected artist also receives a Gold Pass, which provides vehicular entry into seven Charleston County Parks for an entire year.

About tHE ARtISt:Yonges Island resident Nancy McCollum started painting and crafting gourds in 2001, after suffering an injury at work. Her new hobby led her to take painting classes from decorative and fine artists. After years of practice painting, Nancy joined the Charleston Artist Guild and was juried as an exhibiting member. However, Nancy soon realized that the “business” aspect of art was not for her, and decided that she preferred keeping art as a leisure hobby. Today, Nancy retreats back to her shop to paint and wood carve when the mood strikes her.

Nancy likes to portray realism in her paintings and whimsy in her carvings. “When someone looks at one of my paintings and thinks they are looking at a photograph, it makes me smile,” she says. Nancy and her husband are retired, and in addition to art-related hobbies, both enjoy volunteering and kayaking. The inspiration for her work comes from local parks and plantations, as well as more secluded areas that she accesses by kayak. The wildlife in her own back yard is also a great resource for Nancy, providing both inspiration as well as entertainment.
