The Community Foundation is pleased to announce two new members to our staff. Heather Sherwin joined the Foundation on September 1 as our Vice President for Development. On October 1, David M. Laird joined our staff as the Director of Community Impact.

Heather plays a pivotal role in the overall sustainability and growth of the Community Foundation. She develops new charitable funds and works with professional advisors and their clients to fulfill their philanthropic goals. Heather also serves as a resource for charitable planning in the Midlands community.

Heather has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Boston University. Prior to joining the Foundation, she was Director of Principal Gifts for Cleveland Museum of Art where she was responsible for completing a $350 million capital campaign. Her 20 years of fundraising experience include positions with Great Lakes Theater Festival, where she raised $19.3 million to complete the renovation of the historic Hanna Theatre; American Red Cross; Hawken School; and The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York.

Additionally, Ms. Sherwin was actively involved in the Cleveland community. She was president of the Cleveland Arts Prize and Vice President of The Sherwick Fund of the Cleveland Foundation, her family foundation.

David oversees all grant operations for the Foundation’s community philanthropy initiatives. He provides recommendations for discretionary and designated grants and works with community leaders, stakeholders and affiliates throughout the Foundation’s 11 county service area to drive communities to lasting, positive social impact.

David has a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Mississippi and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Alabama. Prior to joining the Foundation, David served as the Director of Policy and Government Affairs for the Children’s Trust of South Carolina. His extensive government affairs experience also includes positions with Voices for America’s Children and the Child Welfare League of America.

Laird is the incoming chair of the Board of Directors for Columbia Opportunity Resource (COR), and serves on the boards for the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce and the Navigating from Good To Great Foundation.

As you can see, both Heather and David have much to offer the Community Foundation and we are privileged to have them on staff. Please contact either of them to discuss how they can be of assistance in fulfilling your charitable goals.

Rising from the binds of poverty can be especially difficult for parents like Tiffany, a single mother struggling to provide for her two children. Tiffany was homeless and had trouble making ends meet while working a minimum wage job until The Cooperative Ministry’s Solid Ground Program helped her take charge of her life. With the program’s assistance and her own hard work, Tiffany is now scheduled to graduate in the spring with a paralegal degree and looks forward to providing for her family in ways she never before imagined.

The Cooperative Ministry (TCM) was founded in 1982 by five downtown Columbia congregations. Their goal was to establish a method of administering assistance to those in need, while also preventing duplication of services. Since then, TCM has grown to encompass congregations of all faiths, more than 120 partnering agencies, and countless civic and social organizations, foundations, businesses and individuals. TCM works diligently to increase the economic self-sufficiency of people experiencing poverty in the Midlands region through crisis assistance and sustainability programs.

The Solid Ground program allows struggling families throughout the Midlands to

regain their footing so they can work towards a brighter future. The program helps families on public assistance overcome poverty by giving parents the tools they need to return to school, complete their education and gain skills to help them succeed. People enrolled in Solid Ground are able to increase their earning potential and reduce or end their dependence on welfare. The Cooperative Ministry established an agency fund with the Community Foundation specifically for this program.

In order to take part, program participants are required to maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher, seek a career in a high-demand field, receive financial and life skills counseling, and give back through community service. The Cooperative Ministry provides parents with childcare, transportation and tuition assistance. There are currently six women enrolled in Solid Ground.

“These are some incredible women who are working very

hard to break the cycle of generational poverty,” says Cooperative Ministry CEO David Kunz. “With the community’s help, we hope to see rapid growth in Solid Ground. Central Carolina Community Foundation also plays a valuable role in helping in the success of Solid Ground and The Cooperative Ministry as a whole,” Kunz says.

You can help Solid Ground by mentoring, donating in-kind items (diapers, baby wipes, etc.), providing financial assistance for daycare expenses or providing facility space for monthly life skills meetings and events. Through this and other programs, The Cooperative Ministry is making a difference in the Midlands by helping individuals and families work their way out of poverty and toward a stable and self-sufficient future. Letter from the President‘Tis the season for holiday dinners; families and friends seated together to give thanks and

celebrate. It is one of my favorite times of year. A time to tell stories, remember those who have touched our lives and share our appreciation for the time and treasure we’ve received. This newsletter provides a glimpse into the Foundation’s bountiful holiday table.

Our dinner conversation is filled with stories of people who have made a difference in our communities. A harvest of goodwill and charity – neighbors helping neighbors and individuals and organizations helping those in need. Please listen in by reading about our Community Champions and recipients of our Vision and Catalyst Awards.

Please join us as we give thanks for innovative programs, like Solid Ground, that are increasing the number of holiday dinners being celebrated in the Midlands. And, as you read the lists of donors, please join us in remembering — with appreciation — the folks who have generously supported nonprofit organizations throughout our community. Their willingness to support the needs of others is cause for celebration.

I am delighted to introduce you to two new colleagues who are seated at the Foundation’s table this year, Heather Sherwin and David Laird. They are already touching lives through their work.

I hope that your holiday dinners are filled with laughter and that you are able to share the joy of the season with those you love.

JoAnn Turnquist

The Foundation exists to help

you – our donors – make the best

decisions you can about where to

invest your philanthropic dollars.

Using a variety of flexible giving

models, we can work with you to

facilitate your gifts in the way that

is easiest and most advantageous.

To help you take full advantage

of the services we offer to our

valued fund holders, we are

sharing some year-end tax

planning ideas from two of the

Foundation’s board trustees.

Jason Caskey is the Financial

Services Practice Chair and

Managing Shareholder for the

Columbia office of Elliott Davis,

LLC. Terry Schmoyer is the

President and Managing Partner

of Schmoyer and Company, LLC.

Please consult with your

tax advisor to ensure your

decisions are appropriate for

your unique tax situation.

Make your gifts by December 31, 2012

to take a deduction on your 2012

tax return. By making a gift to your

fund by December 31, you will

receive a deduction immediately

but will be able to take your

time choosing the charities that

will ultimately receive grants.

Ensure that your gifts are made to qualified organizations in order to take a deduction. Gifts to

your fund at CCCF are eligible

for the maximum deduction

allowed by law. When you

make recommendations to fund

your favorite charities, the

Foundation’s qualified grant

making staff will perform all

necessary due diligence.

Save your gift documentation to support your charitable contribution deductions. This is easy by

making a gift to your fund at

CCCF. The Foundation staff

processes your grant requests

and can work directly with your

tax preparer to provide the

information needed to support

your charitable deductions.

The Foundation can accept several types of assets including

gifts of cash, securities, land,

life insurance policies and

charitable trust payments.

Consider giving appreciated long-term securities. Publicly traded

stock and other securities you’ve

held for more than one year are

one of the best charitable gifts.

Why? Because you can deduct

the fair market value and avoid

the capital gains tax you would

pay if you sold the property.

If you don’t yet have a fund with the Foundation, it’s not too late to do so before year end.

After speaking with your tax advisor, contact Heather Sherwin at the Community Foundation with further questions – 803.254.5601 x331.

The Community Foundation and Columbia Metropolitan magazine partnered once again to present our Best of Philanthropy Awards: Honoring Our Community Champions at the Foundation’s recent annual celebration. These awards honor ordinary people in our community who make giving back a priority for themselves, their family or their business.

Almost 300 people joined us on November 1 to celebrate the philanthropic endeavors of our Community Champions. Each winner was presented with an award and given the opportunity to grant a $500 donation to the charity of their choice in our 11-county service area.

And the winners are:

Local Business Champion Kenneth Long, owner of Long’s Drugs

Individual Champion Cynthia ByrdStudent Champions Airport High School Student GovernmentGroup Champions The CASA QuarterbacksFamily Champions Dr. Bert and Mrs. Jeanne Gué

These Community Champions use their time, treasures and talents to improve the lives of others in our community. They don’t seek out recognition for what they are doing; they do it simply because they believe it’s the right thing to do. As their stories show, philanthropy comes in many forms and sizes.

The winners and their stories were profiled in the November Columbia Metropolitan magazine. If you haven’t read it, we encourage you to buy the issue.

In addition to our Best of Philanthropy Awards, we also presented the 2012 David W. Robinson Catalyst Award and the Carolyn Holderman Vision Awards.

The Catalyst Award, created in memory of David W. Robinson, recognizes organizations in our 11-county service area that have exemplified leadership, creativity, vision and commitment in addressing critical community issues. The 2012 recipient of the Catalyst Award is Family Connection of South Carolina. Family Connection offers a network of support and information for families raising children with special needs with more than 600 parent volunteers across the state.

The Carolyn Holderman Vision Award is named for a beloved member of the Foundation team who passed away last year. Two awards were presented to Cathy Monetti and the Cassels Family (Bill, Charlotte, Tobin and Pat) for their contributions to Talk About Giving, the Foundation’s philanthropic initiative.

“Honoring these individuals and organizations by celebrating their gifts and service is a wonderful way to fulfill our mission to promote, facilitate and increase philanthropy in the Midlands,” said president & CEO JoAnn Turnquist. “We look forward to continuing these awards at our annual celebration each year.”
