T he Eno River Association and the Eno River State Park would like to introduce the Eno River State Park Volunteer Trail Stewards program. This new partnership looks to harness the power of all you trail enthusiasts out there to assist State Park staff in the maintenance of over 24 miles of trail. Because of significant State budget cuts, the Eno River State Park staff has been reduced in size significantly, spreading an already overworked staff extremely thin. That is where the Eno River Association comes in. As the “Friends” organization for the Eno River State Park, one of the Association’s main goals is to provide support to the State Park in whatever way is necessary. Through the years that support has evolved. Initially we advocated for the creation of the Park. Subsequently we have helped identify and acquire key conservation lands to help expand the Park. We also began leading hikes and educational events within the Park to help promote it as an outdoor destination. Now we are looking to expand our stewardship focus into the Park in an effort to provide some relief for the wonderful State Park staff. As for the details, we are seeking 20–25 volunteers. Volunteers will only be responsible for an assigned section of trail. There is no required skill set necessary to volunteer, but you do need to be willing to walk your designated trail once a month and be capable of providing light trail maintenance along the way. Volunteers will also be responsible for submitting a trail monitoring form to the lead trail captain for review. If a major problem is reported by the trail volunteer (such as a downed tree or significant erosion issue) then the trail captain will work with ERSP staff and other trail volunteers to organize a workday to address the issue. So, if you appreciate hiking the many trails of the Park, and you are willing to spend some time each month helping monitor and maintain its trails, email [email protected] to sign up for the first ERSP Volunteer Trail Stewards orientation on Saturday, October 22. We are very lucky to have a resource such as the Eno River State Park in our backyards. With a few extra volunteer hands, we can ensure its continued care well into the future. Kurt Schlimme

Celebrating Our Volunteers

CAlENdAR Trail Stewards Unite in Eno River State Park!

The Eno River Association and the Eno River State Park would like to introduce the Eno River State Park Volunteer Trail Stewards program. This new partnership looks to harness the power of all you trail

enthusiasts out there to assist State Park staff in the maintenance of over 24 miles of trail. Festival!

Let’s do the math: How can we possibly pull off the three-day Festival for the Eno each year,

with only five year-round staff (four full-time and one part-time) who work most of the year on our other priority program areas such as land protection, stewardship, education, fund raising, and advocacy? Our staff does grow modestly each year, with an additional three seasonal staff joining us from late-May through mid-July. Well here’s how the numbers really add up to make it all happen: 685 volunteers working 538 volunteer shifts for a total of almost 3000 volunteer hours before, during, and after the event. We truly couldn’t do it without each of our volunteers who make it all happen each year. If we missed you on our BIG list of volunteers (see right), please email [email protected] to let us know. Thanks y’all! See you next year (same time, same place).
