How well do we:
1) utilize our classroom space?
2) utilize the seats within those
classrooms?

Given current space constraints, how
much room is there for growth at TRU?
![Page 21: Fall 2011](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062815/5681692d550346895de0708c/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Projection of FTE Growth
1 FTE = 15 seat hours per week
Available FTEs = Total Seat Hours Per Week Available 15 Seat Hours Per Week
• FTE growth calculations based on non-dedicated classrooms only• Time used by the Ad-Hoc bookings and Continuing Education bookings have been
taken into consideration when calculating FTE growth based on classroom utilization
• Ad-Hoc bookings are classroom bookings that are not regularly scheduled
![Page 22: Fall 2011](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062815/5681692d550346895de0708c/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Scenario 1: the 8-hour day
TRU could grow 1,790 FTEs without expanding current space
This number is based on the following assumptions:1. All non-dedicated classrooms reach at least a 75% utilization rate 301
FTEs
2. We reach 85% seat occupancy within booked classrooms 1,489 FTEs
3. We achieve the above goals for the entire 8-hour day
![Page 23: Fall 2011](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062815/5681692d550346895de0708c/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Scenario 2: the 13-hour day
TRU could grow 3,379 FTEs without expanding current space
This number is based on the following assumptions:1. All non-dedicated classrooms reach at least a 75% utilization rate
1,599 FTEs
2. We reach 85% seat occupancy within booked classrooms 1,780 FTEs
3. We achieve the above goals for the entire 13-hour day
![Page 24: Fall 2011](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062815/5681692d550346895de0708c/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Projection of FTE Growth
To actually be able to grow this many FTEs, the following must occur:1. TRU must increase the utilization of classrooms during the
evenings2. TRU must increase the utilization of classrooms on Fridays3. Close the gap between classroom size and course enrolment4. Consider a software assisted scheduling process that would
allow for optimization of instructional space
![Page 25: Fall 2011](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062815/5681692d550346895de0708c/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Proposed Policy Baseline
•26% of TRU’s courses that were scheduled in Fall 2011 meet the newly proposed scheduling policy
• Classes scheduled M/W/F lasting 1 hr• Classes scheduled T/Th lasting 1.5 hrs• Classes scheduled M-F after 2:30pm
lasting 3 hrs
![Page 26: Fall 2011](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062815/5681692d550346895de0708c/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
