The!graduating!Class!of!2010!knew!they!were!in!for!something!special!when!Executive!Producer!Emily!Gerson!Saines!was!selected!to!be!their!keynote!speaker.!!!Addressing!an!audience!of!excited!graduates!and!their!families,!Ms.!Gerson!Saines!spoke!poignantly!about!her!son!with!Autism,!and!about!the!importance!of!occupational!therapy!in!their!lives.!!!Not!too!long!after!her!appearance!with!us,!she!then!appeared!in!front!of!an!audience!of!millions,!as!she!accepted!the!EMMY!for!Best!Picture!for!her!HBO!Film,!TEMPLE!GRANDIN.!!!

Haiti)))))))))))!
In!January!2010!the!international!community!responded!to!the!catastrophic!earthquake!in!Haiti.!Global!efforts!included!contributions!not!only!from!first!responders,!disaster!management!personnel!and!charitable!organizations;!faculty,!students!and!alumni!from!Columbia!University!Programs!in!Occupational!Therapy!heeded!the!call!to!service.!Graduates!from!our!program!came!together!to!support!
rehabilitation!efforts!in!Haiti!through!a!variety!of!roles,!activities!and!donorship.!!
Dr.!Debra!Tupe!collaborated!with!Ms.!Danielle!Butin!to!develop!a!comprehensive!rehabilitation!program!that!included!an!initial!ongsite!needs!assessment,!a!service!delivery!model,!a!plan!for!training!local!Haitian!paraprofessional!staff,!a!plan!for!material!resource!acquisition!and!distribution,!and!program!
evaluation.!!Columbia!occupational!therapy!and!physical!therapy!students!volunteered!their!services!to!refurbish!wheelchairs,!mobility!aides!and!adaptive!equipment.!!Students,!alumni!and!occupational!therapy!practitioners!throughout!NYC!donated!funds!and!supplies.!After!conducting!a!needs!assessment!in!Haiti!in!February!‘10,!an!interdisciplinary!team!of!occupational!therapists,!physical!therapists,!and!a!rehabilitation!medicine!resident!arrived!in!Port!au!Prince,!Haiti!a!month!later.!!Under!Deb!Tupe’s!leadership,!this!team!triaged,!evaluated!and!provided!services!in!a!tent!on!the!grounds!of!Les!Centre!Gheskio.!!!Les!Centre!
Gheskio!is!an!infectious!disease!clinic!that!expanded!their!practice!to!meet!the!needs!of!the!clients!they!served.!They!were!confronted!with!serious!injuries!and!disabling!conditions!as!a!result!of!the!earthquake.!!Haitian!rehabilitation!technician!trainees!worked!side!by!side!with!Deb’s!team!and!participated!in!morning!and!afternoon!classes.!As!a!result,!5!of!the!23!trainees!are!now!employed!at!Les!Centres!Gheskio.!!
Service)Learning)in)Nicaragua))))))))))))
In!May!2010!three!second!year!graduate!students,!Brianna!Lewis,!Ellen!Osei!and!Elizabeth!Cohen!participated!in!the!Nicaragua!Service!Learning!elective!course.!The!focus!of!the!elective,!which!took!place!in!Managua,!Nicaragua,!was!to!provide!educational!and!technical!support!to!the!
families!and!staff!at!the!Los!Piptos!Center.!The!staff!at!Los!Piptos!identified!a!need!to!further!develop!and!expand!their!knowledge!and!skill!repertoire!in!meeting!the!needs!of!children!with!behavioral!conditions!and!their!families.!!Partially!funded!by!and!in!collaboration!with!Global!Health!Partners, the!OT!students!assisted!Deb!Tupe!in!the!development!of!the!program!curriculum,!led!small!group!discussion,!and!demonstrated!occupational!therapy!interventions!and!techniques.!!
Our!students!also!had!the!opportunity!to!explore!the!role!of!Nicaragua’s!cultural!and!social!context!on!the!opportunities!available!to!families!and!children!with!disabilities.!

When!Deb!Tupe!first!went!to!Cuba,!little!did!she!know!that!she!would!be!making!numerous!followgup!trips,!eventually!centering!her!doctoral!dissertation!there.!!Her!initial!journeys!to!Cuba!were!to!conduct!educational!experiences!for!OT!faculty!
and!students!from!Thomas!Jefferson!University,!where!she!was!a!faculty!member,!and!then!with!faculty!and!students!from!Columbia.!!These!experiences!and!the!relationship!she!forged!with!El!Centro!de!Rehabilitacion!y!Neurodesarrollo,!in!Cardenas!,!led!to!research!she!conducted!on!!The$Lived$Experience$of$Caring:$Structure,$Context$and$Typologies.$
Deb!was!asked!to!return!to!Cuba!and!present!a!Scientific!Session!at!El!Centro!de!Rehabilitacion!y!Neurodesarrollo.!!!!The!session!is!open!to!physicians,!neonatologists,!educators,!and!the!Center’s!staff!of!rehabilitation!personnel.!!The!session!focuses!on!the!findings!from!the!collaborative!study!from!El!Centro,!and!covers!the!results!of!the!survey!of!mothers’!perspectives!of!the!services!El!Centro!provides,!how!mothers!and!therapists!interact!during!treatment!sessions,!the!mothers’!narratives!that!focus!on!their!understanding!of!their!children’s!disabilities,!and!the!actions!they!take!in!order!to!acquire!resources!and!services!in!Cuba.!
)Fieldwork)in)Trinidad)
Beginning!in!2008,!our!program!entered!into!an!agreement!with!Caribbean!Kids!and!Families!Therapy!Organization!in!an!exciting,!ongoing!international!fieldwork!program.!!While!we!have!been!placing!stusdents!in!
international!settings!for!many!years,!this!is!the!first!time!we!have!established!an!ongoing!partnership!with!a!specific!site.!!Through!the!efforts!of!Pam!Miller!and!Deb!Tupe,!!we!established!a!level!2!pediatric!fieldwork!experience!for!select!Columbia!students.!!Spending!12!weeks!immersed!in!the!Trinidad!culture!while!learning!about!pediatric!occupational!therapy!in!this!country!has!been!an!invaluable!and!rewarding!experience.!!In!addition!to!our!students!providing!OT!services!unders!the!supervision!of!an!NBCOT!board!certified!therapist,!they!also!are!involved!with!program!development,!occupational!therapy!advocacy,!and!participate!in!the!Association!for!Carribean!Occupatinal!Therapists.

)Members!of!the!Class)of)2011)led!clients!in!the!Bucket$Drum$Group,!the!purpose!of!which!was!to!use!music!and!rhythm!to!increase!socialization!while!addressing!cognitive!impairments.!The!group!was!developed!for!clients!living!in!a!shelter!who!are!homeless!with!mental!illness.!The!students!wanted!to!compare!the!experience!with!outpatients!who!have!multiple!sclerosis.!It!was!conducted!twice!at!a!men's!shelter!and!once!at!an!MS!center!in!New!York!City.))

Raechel!Zipagan,!’11,!Michael!Silver,!’11,!and!Caroline!Brandel!‘12!ran!the!NYC!Marathon!on!November!7,!2010.!!Preparing!for!this!event!can!take!nearly!three!months,!which!means!that!these!students!were!on!a!strict!marathon!training!schedule!while!going!to!class,!participating!in!fieldwork,!writing!papers!and!taking!exams.!!!!
Cheered!on!by!classmates!donning!tee!shirts!made!especially!for!this!event,!our!students!ran!through!the!streets!of!the!5!boroughs!of!Manhattan,!traversed!4!bridges,!ran!up!and!down!hills,!and!made!it!to!the!finish!line.!!With!running!times!between!3:45!and!under!6!hours,!a!couple!of!them!even!made!it!to!class!the!next!day!!!Without!question,!they!each!embody!our!new!brand!!!

Three!of!our!2nd!year!OT!students,!Danielle!Katz,!Caitlin!LaRussa!and!Anna!Shteyler,!are!engaged!in!an!exciting!intergenerational!and!interdisciplinary!elective!sponsored!by!Teachers!College,!Columbia!University.!!The!twogsemester!course!has!a!fall!classroom!component!in!which!selected!graduate!students!learn!about!development!in!later!life!and!meet!artists!with!whom!they!will!be!working.!In!the!spring,!weekly!fieldwork!connects!pairs!of!students!representing!five!different!disciplines/schools!with!older!adult!professional!artists!(ages!68g92)!in!their!art!studios.!The!mutual!goal!of!an!interdisciplinary!group!of!faculty,!students!and!artists!is!to!undertake!the!organization!of!the!artists’!studios!and!the!documenting!of!their!life!work,!with!software!developed!specifically!for!this!purpose.!Simultaneous!with!the!support!and!guidance!students!provide!to!the!artists,!the!students!receive!mentorship!from!experienced!professionals!in!creative!process!through!a!lifetime!that!enables!the!artists’!to!shape!the!future!by!sharing!their!legacy.!

The)Jarvie)Commonweal)Services)Foundation))For!the!7th!year,!our!Program!has!received!a!contract!from!The!Jarvie!Commonweal!Services!Foundation!to!provide!occupational!therapy!services!to!homebound!elders.!!!Initially!under!Dr.!Patricia!Miller’s!supervision,!and!now!guided!by!Professor!Phyllis!Mirenberg!Simon!in!collaboration!with!Aimee!Philpot!of!Jarvie,!our!students!!provide!assessments!and!interventions!related!to!health!promotion!and!health!maintenance!recommendations!designed!to!enhance!the!current!level!of!function!for!clients.!They!address!their!functional!skills,!mobility!and!safety!of!the!environment;!cognitive,!sensory!and!physical!capacity;!level!of!socialization;!degree!of!motivation!to!engage!in!meaningful!activities,!and!overall!functional!level.!The!students!work!directly!with!the!Jarvie!staff!to!provide!these!services!and!meet!the!program’s!objectives!to!manage!daily!life!with!greater!ease,!safety!and!satisfaction.!! !

The!2010!Supervisor!of!the!Year!,!a!transplant!from!Australia!who!worked!first!in!Texas!and!then!came!to!NY,!Mr.!Jason!Van!De!Ven!is!an!outstanding!clinician!who!serves!as!the!Inpatient!therapy!manager!as!well!as!the!brain!injury!program!manager!for!Mt.!Sinai!Hospital.!His!area!of!expertise!is!Brain!Injury,!and!he!is!part!of!the!Traumatic!Brain!Injury!Leadership!Forum.!!Jason!is!also!a!dedicated!clinical!educator!who!is!always!there!to!promote!Columbia’s!OT!program,!provide!a!vast!array!of!

After!15!years!on!our!faculty!as!both!a!professor!and!administrator,!!Dr.!Ernestine!Pantel!decided!to!begin!another!chapter!in!her!life.!!When!Ernestine!first!joined!our!faculty,!it!was!to!teach!our!Health!Policy!and!Management!course,!and!to!direct!the!research!component!of!the!curriculum.!!With!a!doctorate!in!public!health,!she!brought!to!our!program!an!important!perspective!on!health!care!issues.!!Her!research!interests,!in!which!teams!of!students!participated,!also!broadened!the!opportunities!for!occupational!therapy!involvement.!
