Project W.I.L.D. Working for Immigrant Literacy Development BEGINNING PROJECT W.I.L.D. INTERMEDIATE ADVANCED January 20 January 27 February 3 February 10 February 24 March 3 March 10 We build on the basic grammar skills learned in the beginning level and we try to develop writing skills needed to write coherent essays. Our students have a basic understanding of English; it is our goal to try and hone the skills so that they will be ready to creatively write in the advanced level. In intermediate we basically focus on correcting common grammatical mistakes and expanding vocabulary. Beginning focuses on introducing students to the basics of the English language and to help them build upon this foundation via worksheets based on the rules of grammar. This level is primarily geared towards familiarizing the students with the elements of the English language rather than developing their own critical thinking skills. One of the goals of this year is to help students become more comfortable in using English to communicate with others. Advanced level engages students that are verbally proficient in English and can more or less compose a grammatically correct paragraph. We focus on critical thinking and writing skills (both academic and cre- ative), public speaking/debate and emphasize college access for students. We also encourage self-reflec- tion and articulation of students' perspectives, cultures, etc in our activities to promote students' sense of self and their communities. The main focus of our program is to teach students how to speak, read, and write English. Through the use of weekly tutorial sessions, W.I.L.D. helps immigrant teenagers and their families transition into America. In addition, our tutors act as positive role models and help our students through their adolescent years. The kids are separated into three different levels: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. Who is your role model? What is yourrelationship with your role model? What

characteristics make him/her special? Howdoes your role model affect who you want to

be? Would you consider your role model to beyour hero? Why or why not?

Yanru (Ellison) ChenMy role model is my mom. The reason why my mom is my role

model is because she is really smart. Although she is also animmigrant, she is always able to overcome any difficulties she faces.

My role model makes me believe that if I try hard I’m able to beanything. Even though my mom is my role model but I don’t reallyconsider her as my role model. The reason is that she had not savedme like a hero yet.

Jasmine LeeMy role model is my mom. She is my role model because of her natureto care for others and try her best to do anything she can. She makeme want to do my best and become whoever I want to be. I wouldconsider her to be my hero because she raised me to be who I am andwho I will be. She helped me through my bad times, and is always therefor me. She helped me raise my grades by becoming my mentor.

Claudia MerinoMy role model is my fourth grade teacher Mrs. Hum. I was her student, actually I was one of her best students. When ever I needed help withsomething, I would just ask her for help and she would come to help me.What makes her special to me was that she was nice to everyone. Whenever someone raised their hand, suddenly she would appear there tohelp them. She had one kid and what amazed me was that she hadenough time for her kid and her students. In fourth grade I was reallygood at math, so she told me to become something that had to do withmath and numbers. Her as a teacher made me want to learn and actuallypay attention in class. I don’t consider her as a hero because I thinkshe is more than a hero. To me she was better than a hero.

Zelena NavarroMy role model might be Oprah from the Oprah show. She’s my rolemodel because she’s funny and she help other people, like Dr. Phildoes. She and Dr. Phil inspire me to help others and not only myself. Also cause she has a show so everybody can do the same for others.I don’t think she can be considered as my hero cause, so she canbe my hero she has to like talk to me through a big problem I havewith someone or somewhere. If I ever had a problem I will emailher or something like that so she can help me release my feelingsor something. My role model is Oprah she is a great women.

Tracy PhanMy role model is Quang Ngo. He is my dad. He is specialbecause be is smart wise and I want to do what he does. He

affects on who I want to be because he always teaches methe right thing, and he always watch out for me and he

always take care of me. Yes, I would consider my roleas my hero because without him I wouldn’t be able to

have nice clothing, have supplies for school, have nice

I love my mom because she is acaring person.

When I grow up, I want tobe a teacher is because I see my teacher, Mr. Cardenateach my class amazing stuff like acient moves about whathappened in the past or when he reads to us, like if wedon’t get a word he helps us on anything we need helpon.
