Memories of moments celebrated together.....

Memorable moments remain in our minds and hearts forever. But somehow we never think of pen-ning them down. Few of us make an attempt to jot down our memorable moments. Undoubtedly in these days of face book, whats app and selfies, we have progressed to capturing our special moments. However I think there cannot be anything more pleasant than turning over the pages of a book which has an record all those events which have brought smiles and laughter to your face and reliv-ing them.

This issue has prompted our members to share with us some of their memorable moments and it has been such a pleasure going through their articles.

Then of course the FALCON club has always been so special to all of us, members, that there is no dearth of happy memorable moments. The past two months have seen us incorporating many memorable activities into the regular meetings with our dear members adding that special touch to it.

I think in the process of learning and growing, our club, FALCON, brings out the best in each one of us. I wish all our members the very best in their fu-ture endeavours.

ROLE MODEL

every cricket coaches life

easy; they only have to tell

the budding cricket players

who they should replicate on

the ground. This one name is

used to demonstrate sincer-

ity, punctuality, hard work and passion. Not only it

made the life of coaches easy, but also helped kids to

comprehend the meaning of hardworking, sincerity etc

in addition to inspiring to pursue the cricketing career.

Similarly, one should have a role model to model after

to pursue any profession to be successful. To become a

successful businessman one has to copy a successful

businessman, one has to emulate a winning social

leader to thrive in that area. Even, to master the skill

of oratory, one shouldn’t shy off from simulating a

winning speaker if the speaker’s style is suiting his

personality.

One can have several role models to model after to act

different roles in life, whether it is the role of a toast-

master, employee, employer or friend. We may also

imitate a role model who has been successful in differ-

ent roles as well. A role model can be a religious leader

or a character from books, movies or your colleague.

However, a successful person you know in the office

may be easy to copy when you confront with tight

situations connected with your work.

Although it is important to have role models, it is

equally dangerous to have wrong role models who

could become a reason for choosing wrong paths and

ending up throwing away all the values and principles

that one holds preciously once. One doesn’t have to

emulate all the attributes of the role model, he/she has

to be fastidious and the role model doesn’t have to be a

successful person in all walks of life. Hence, one has to

be conscious when choosing a role model as like suc-

cessful persons breed successful enthusiasts an unsuc-

cessful person can breed unsuccessful followers too.

Feel Happy about it.... Yes, we all feel happy about it, when someone say you are my role model, you are doing a great job or you did a great job by forgetting

the reality that many are observing what you are doing and following you to get the best out of you. Many realise it early, many don't pay attention to it and many don't want to pay at-tention at all. But then if you don't pay atten-tion , how will your family members, colleagues and community will be able to grow or learn the best from you? Yes, our parents, community and neighbours had influenced and put their hard work to make you and this is your oppor-tunity to make others, build a new generation who knows how to lead with passion and love. Make use of it. We all do help others, but re-member if you put that so called extra effort, you will be able to change the lives of many and show them how to be a better human be-ing. In TOASTMATERS we learn from others life and this is the only platform where you can bring the best out of an individual. Wish you all a great success.

What’s in it for you?

Toastmasters will give you the skills and confidence you need to effectively express yourself in any situation.

Whether you are a professional, student, stay-at-home parent or retiree, Toastmasters is the most efficient, enjoyable

and affordable way of gaining great communication skills. By learning to effectively formulate and express your

ideas, you open an entirely new world of possibilities. You’ll be more persuasive and confident when giving presen-

tations, and you’ll improve your one on-one dealings with others.

How does it work?

Don’t worry! Everyone in a Toastmasters meeting was once at the level you are now. The environment is friendly

and supportive, and the self-paced program allows you to build confidence with each speaking assignment. And

you’ll love the applause! Constructive evaluation is the heart of the Toastmasters program. Each time you give a

prepared speech, an evaluator will point out strengths and suggest improvements. At first you’ll be applauded for

your effort; later you’ll be applauded for your skill.

Leaders are good communicators!

Leaders are good communicators. Leadership is the art of persuading others to do what you wish to be done. To do

so, you need to communicate, and you need to work as a team. In Toastmasters, you’ll do both. And you’ll find out

how to vary your approach to suit the needs of different people, be they the audience for a speech, the committee for

a fundraiser, or the members of your family.

Don’t delay!

Become the speaker and leader you want to be. Confident, charismatic leaders weren’t born that way. As you pro-

gress in Toastmasters, you’ll get to practice your skills by organizing and conducting meetings and motivating oth-

ers to help you. Become a better negotiator. Gain trust. Sharpen your management skills. Inspire your team. Be de-

cisive!

From the heart of Treasurer , TM Mansoor M It is better be late than never. Though I was given an opportunity to join this Club long back, I

was bit reluctant and did not grab that opportunity. It took almost 10 years for me to join this

Club. From my last term as VP-Membership to the present term as Treasurer, I feel proud as I

am able to learn a lot and still continue learning to become a Leader and a good Communicator.

Tackle English

Wish

‘I wish to' can mean the same as 'I want to' but it is much more formal and less common. Here are a few examples:

(a) I wish to make a complaint

(b) I wish to see the manager.

However, the main use of 'wish' is to say that we would like things to be different from what they are, that we have

regrets about the present situation.

* I wish I was rich.

* He wishes he lived in Paris.

* They wish they'd chosen a different leader.

Notice that the verb tense which follows 'I wish' is 'more in the past' than the tense corresponding to its meaning.

Club Recognition

The highest level of recognition available for any club is President’s Distinguished Club that can be achieved by

scoring 9 of the 10 points in a term. The current executive committee is aiming high for this distinction not only to

stand out as a club but also as a yardstick to measure our own quality, performances and progress. And this cannot

be achieved without a team work, and all members have a major role to play. Our VP Education will be in touch

with you with his plan, and his plan of execution. Our club officer list is submitted on time and four of our execu-

tive committee members attended the officers’ training, DCP constitutes all these and much more. There will be

other requirements like number of projects and the registration of the new members. It is a process in progress, and

your earnest support is requested for its accomplishment.

Do you know?

There are many tricks to handle your nervousness when you have a speech to deliver in your club. One of them is,

come early and meet every member in person. Not only the support will work as a booster but also you will be at

ease when you are speaking to known faces than to strangers.

From The Veterans Treasure…...

History of Public Speaking By TM Mohd. Nazir

The formal study of public speaking began approximately 2500 years ago in Greece

and Rome to train citizens to participate in social discourses. Throughout the

20thcentury, the art of public speaking developed and many Western Universities started public speaking courses

as a part of their curriculum. Throughout history, Emperors, Kings, Rulers, Statesmen and Leaders used public

speaking as a powerful tool to change the course of humanity, to build nations, to empower generations. A brief

history of public speaking can be drawn as below:

Classical Period (500-400BC) There were four prominent philosophers who had taken the initiative to promote public speaking in ancient

Greece and Rome. They were Aspasia, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. Among these, Aristotle’s contributions are

considered as the most important. He taught public speaking in Plato’s Academy and later opened his own school

and taught rhetoric along with other subjects. He divided the means of persuasion in public speaking into three

parts; Logos (logical reasoning), Ethos (human character) and Pathos (emotional appeal) which are widely used

even today.

Demosthenes (384-322 BC) was another eminent orator of Greece, who had expounded intellectual prowess and

provided an insight in to the Athenian politics and culture to the world .Among the Romans, Cicero (106 - 43BC)

and Quintilian (35-100AD) were the prominent figures. Cicero is considered as one of the greatest orators of all

time.

Medieval Period (400 –1400 AD) In contrast to Classical Period, which promoted tremendous growth and innovation in the study of communica-

tion, The Medieval Period might be considered as the dark ages of academic study in public speaking.

The Renaissance (1400 –1600 AD)

Empowered by the new intellectual movement during this period, secular institutions and governments started to

compete with The Church for personal allegiances. Ideas surrounding issues of style in speaking situations re-

ceived significant attention during this period.

The Enlightenment (1600 –1800 AD)

Neoclassicism revived the classical approach to rhetoric by adapting and applying it to contemporary situations.

During this period more and more persuading techniques came into practice. Studies on speaker’s body actions,

gestures, facial expressions and pronunciation were conducted. The Enlightenment period brought back the glory

of the classical period by bridging the past and the present

New School (1900s – Present Day)

Throughout 20th century, public speaking developed as a concentrated field of study with the establishment of rhe-

torical courses in high schools and universities. Communication departments had professors who studied and

taught classical rhetoric and contemporary rhetoric along with empirical and qualitative social sciences.

The Founder of Toastmasters International Dr. Ralph C. Smedley , belongs to the New School of Public Speak-

ing . The first Toastmasters Club Meeting was held on Oct, 22, 1924 at YMCA , in Santa Ana , California. The

rest is history …… An amazing history ………. Another classical journey of many, through the illustrious eche-

lons of communicational excellence…
