Throughout its long history, the company has specialised in lifting solutions on all types of construction projects.

From its UK headquarters in Shipdham, Norfolk, the company has responded to increasing demand from UK construction companies to supply high quality, reliable tower cranes. During the

1980’s this resulted in a move from self-erecting tower cranes to the more conventional saddle jib and luffing jib cranes. The fleet continued to expand as did the overseas operations. Throughout the 1990’s and into 2000’s the fleet increased to over 200 tower cranes and incorporated, for a short while, the provision of passenger hoists as well, with the self-erector numbers diminishing. Some 25 years ago, a strategy was established to modernise and standardise the fleet using predominately Jaso cranes, with the older machines being sold off through our export division.

During the financial crisis from 2008, UK hire activity reduced substantially and the company shifted its focus from UK rental to worldwide exports. In so doing, the majority of staff were able to be retained during this period, which enabled the company to grow substantially during the ensuing recovery. The organisation has continued to expand across the UK and Europe employing over 400 personnel and running a fleet of 400 cranes, which includes a new dedicated self-erector division.

Along with tower cranes, other activities in the company have grown in recent years, such as the development of the power division (100+ units) to satisfy the growing demand for turnkey projects, transport infrastructure, shot blast and spray facilities and a training academy. The company is proud to be the largest independent tower crane supplier in the UK and proud to be working closely with many of the UK’s leading contractors and developers on specialist projects.

THE LARGEST INDEPENDENT TOWER CRANE SUPPLIER IN THE UKOriginally established in the 1970’s as a self erecting tower crane rental company, Falcon Tower Crane Services Ltd, as it has now become known, has evolved from a regional tower crane supplier to an international brand, selling and renting tower cranes all over the world.

KEY FACTSFALCON ARE THE LARGEST INDEPENDENT TOWER CRANE SUPPLIER IN THE UK

Page 6: FALCON€¦ · FALCON LUFFING JIB TOWER CRANES Luffing jib cranes have many benefits and are widely used in cities and congested areas where “over sailing” is a major consideration.

Falcon has a varied fleet of saddle jib tower cranes ranging from 40 to 700 tonne metre. Predominantly a fleet of Jaso tower cranes, other manufactures also include Potain and Liebherr. Saddle jib cranes offer many benefits and are generally more cost effective to hire than their luffing jib equivalent. Having a quicker operation, lower power and being easier to erect and dismantle they remain a prominent feature across the UK skyline. As with luffing jib cranes, they can be erected on a ballasted base or fixing angles and free stand at height in excess of 100m – no ties to the building required.

1.2m x 1.2m Tower sections

Our city crane models use as standard a tower section with a cross section of only 1.2m x 1.2m. With models up to 52 tonne metre achieving free standing heights of up to 46 metres. This compact solution is ideal for sites with restricted space, and even allows for the tower cranes to be installed within a small lift shaft.

Semi flat top Cranes

Along with the conventional saddle jib crane, we also offer a fleet of semi flat top saddle jib cranes. These tower cranes can have a jib reach of up to 85m with a maximum capacity of 24t. They are an ideal solution to multi crane sites and contracts with height restrictions.

Remote control

In accordance with British Standards 7121 we can supply all saddle jib tower cranes up to 100 tonne metre capacity as pedestrian operated tower cranes (POTC). This function allows the cranes to be operated via a remote control from the base of the crane, giving the operator the flexibility to move around site whilst operating the crane.

FALCON LUFFING JIB TOWER CRANESLuffing jib cranes have many benefits and are widely used in cities and congested areas where “over sailing” is a major consideration.

Falcon’s luffing jib fleet ranges from a small remote control operated Lambri F2010 luffing jib tower crane with a maximum jib length of 20m and a maximum lifting capacity of 3.5t, to a Jaso J380PA which comes with a 65m jib and a maximum capacity of 36t. Luffing jib cranes have many benefits and are widely used in cities and congested areas where over-sailing by the jib is a major consideration. The design of this type of machine enables multiple cranes to be installed on a job site in close proximity to each other. This increases the hook time on site and allows completion dates to be substantially reduced as a result.

Over sailing - what is it?

Under English Law a land owner owns the airspace above his land. It is therefore potentially trespass if a developer or its contractor allows a tower crane jib to swing across land owned by other parties. This rule is the same for when the crane is in operation or when the crane is in free slew (the jib will face the direction of the wind). To limit this impact, all of Falcon’s luffing jib and hydraulic luffing jib tower cranes come with a low park radius as standard, and this can be reduced further by installing a special park radius device onto the crane. By keeping the park radius to a minimum, its reduces the impact of your construction site on the local community.

Hydraulic Luffing Jib Cranes

Alongside the conventional luffing jib cranes, Falcon currently supplies two types of hydraulic luffing jibs cranes with a jib length up to 50m and the maximum capacity of 6t. This type of tower crane has multiple benefits such as low power requirement and an incredibly reduced standard out of service parking radius (7m on a 45m jib).

For total flexibility, we offer a wide range of lifting machinery, with the self-erecting tower cranes a prime example. Suitable for most applications, low on power consumptions and very versatile, these cranes can be manoeuvred into almost any site. With hook heights of up to 33m and jib lengths up to 40m, combined with low transportation and erection costs, these machines can be a cheaper and more efficient option for smaller building sites.

Modern Fleet

With over 75% of our self-erecting fleet under 10 years old, Falcon continues to invest in modern machinery and technology. The recently expanded fleet of just under 70 machines is one of the largest in the UK and it continues to grow.

GAPO

With access to tight building sites an increasing problem for our customers, we can supply the ideal solutions with a GAPO machine. The Italian manufactured machine, complete with site axles for each of our self-erecting cranes, acts as a trolley, to enable cranes to be manoeuvred to the desired location. This negates the requirement for expensive, large, mobile cranes to position the machines in their correct locations.

Crawler Cranes

For contracts that require even more flexibility, Falcon can offer two types of crawler mounted self-erecting tower cranes – The Potain 340A and Munster 30/36. Both machines can be tracked around site using their on board mounted generator. Alternatively, they can utilise an electrical feed from the mains, if used in a static position.

FALCON SPRAY BOOTHAt Falcon we recognise the importance of not just a strong product and a comprehensive service, but also company image.

For this reason, we have invested in 2 shot blast and 5 spray booths across our depots in Shipdham and Manchester. The shot blast booths are accredited to SA3 white metal standard and the spray booths are complete with the latest, state of the art, electro-static equipment. The paint used is a marine based paint which has a high zinc phosphate content and is 100% lead free. Three of the booths are located in an old World War II aircraft hangar on Shipdham Airfield, which includes a 20t overhead rail mounted gantry crane.

The Cranes

The advantages of a respray to our customers are two-fold. The first and most important is for health and safety reasons. Any tower crane in our fleet can be shot blasted to its bare metal allowing our engineers to thoroughly inspect and carry out non destructive testing (NDT) procedures on the structure before it is resprayed. By adding layer upon layer of paint without shot blasting, the risk can increase structural damage going unnoticed. The second benefit is branding. We can supply any tower crane in our fleet, in our customers own livery. Once a machine has been through our booths, the result is an extremely high grade product – perfect for a prestigious project.

What else can we do?

With the facilities we have, we can blast, repair and respray almost any piece of equipment. This includes construction equipment, heavy industrial equipment, lifting accessories, site accommodation, containers and many, many more.

Falcon Power Generation have invested in a modern and robust fleet of hire generators, ranging from a 20KVA to 1250KVA providing both off the shelf and bespoke solutions, so units deliver the power you require to do the job successfully.

Stage 3A compliant

Each of the 100 plus generators in our fleet are compliant with the NRMM regulations and are stage 3A compliant. The benefit is twofold, not only will all our customers be complying with current regulations, they will also benefit from lower CO2 omissions to achieve the European Directive 97/68/EC and achieve lower fuel bills.

What is NRMM?

All NRMM (Non-Road Mobile Machinery) between 37 and 560KW must confirm to the EU Engine Emission Stage or have an exception issued by the Greater London Authority. Currently the regulations apply to all developments that fall within the central activity zone (CAZ) within London and also Canary Wharf, however there are plans to expand this further in the coming years.

Falcon’s Hybrid Power Solutions

These units deliver both cost savings and additional cuts in CO2 emissions, just like a hybrid car but on a larger scale. This works with the generator to reduce running time and fuel consumption. This efficient running creates spare energy which is stored in a high power battery pack, which can then be used without the need for the generator to run, reducing emissions further.

20

Applications include, but are not limited to:

N Tower crane aviation lights N IT and medical equipment

N Small cabin set-ups N Environmental monitoring equipment

N Security lighting and CCTV Systems N PA Systems

N Communications and wireless access points

FALCON POWER GENERATIONWhen our customers tell us what their requirements are, we listen, then we design a solution to satisfy their needs.

Page 21: FALCON€¦ · FALCON LUFFING JIB TOWER CRANES Luffing jib cranes have many benefits and are widely used in cities and congested areas where “over sailing” is a major consideration.

21

Fuel management and 24 hour GPS monitoring

Our fleet of bunded fuel tanks ranges from 450ltrs to 3000lts and on request these fuel tanks can be fitted with telemetry equipment to maintain, control and monitor fuel consumption 24 hours a day 7 days a week. We can also monitor the current CO2 emissions, fuel savings, battery duration and engine run time saved. With this system in place fuel replenishment can be remotely monitored and fuel delivery arranged to avoid shortage.

KEY FACTSALL FALCON GENERATORS ARE COMPLIANT WITH LEGISLATION ON CO2 EMISSIONS

One of the many steps that Falcon takes to ensure a safe place of work is undertaking the accreditation of five different SSIPS (Safe Systems in procurement). Being members of a SSIP shows our customers that we have attained the appropriate level of competence and procedural ability in Health & Safety management.

In addition to the SSIP’s Falcon also holds ISO 9001:2015 quality accreditation, which we have held since 2007. This Management system is critical to our company ethos and demonstrates to our customers the important emphasis placed on quality. Accreditation to a recognised quality standard is essential for dealing with and complying with legislation, ISO 9001 is the world’s most recognised quality management standard.

In addition to the ISO9001:2015 quality accreditation, Falcon holds an environmental management system (EMS) standard ISO14001. This accreditation was gained in 2014 and it assists the organisation to focus on environmental issues, such as the reduction of carbon footprints, making the most out of renewable energy and cutting waste. It ensures that the company stays compliant with current environmental legislation while publicly demonstrating commitment to protecting the environment.

OHSAS 18001, Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series, (officially BS OHSAS 18001) is an internationally applied British Standard for occupational Health and Safety management systems. It exists to help all kinds of organisations put in place demonstrably sound occupational health and safety performance. The accreditation lets our customers know that Falcon complies with legislation to prevent accidents, and protect employees. Implementing the management system quickly helped us reduce risks to our own organisation. It includes processes for identifying hazards and establishing emergency procedures, thus making our organisation a safer place in which to work.

HEALTH AND SAFETY AND ACCREDITATION Falcon takes the health, safety, quality and the environment very seriously and nothing is more important to this company than the well being of its employees and customers.
