For thirty years, Faith Lutheran College has built a strong reputation for the quality of its Agriculture program. In fact according to Agriculture Coordinator, Bob Mitchell,

approximately two thirds of graduates have studied Agriculture at some stage of their time at the College, and even more have experienced involvement in one of the College’s three livestock clubs. The Cattle, Sheep and Goat Club teams have become an integral part of College life. The approach to the Clubs is much like any activity at the College - a community of people coming together to create something truly special. This includes the students and staff who work tirelessly over many months, and a stream of volunteers and donors who loyally and generously contribute to the College community.

From the 22nd of March to the 2nd of April, 24 students and two teachers from our Japanese sister school, Seibo Gakuen visited Faith for

a short-term exchange. The students came with the purpose of being immersed in the English language and the Australian way of life. During their stay, the Seibo students attended lessons provided especially for them in the subjects of Art, English, Science, PE, History and Music. They were also given the opportunity to attend regular lessons with their host siblings and buddies. The Seibo students thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Gorge Wildlife Park, where they were able to hold a Koala and pet Kangaroos, and their walk to Murray Street, Tanunda, where they went souvenir shopping. The Year 7-12 Japanese classes also enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the Japanese students. Highlights included the Year 7s practising their Hiragana with the students and showing them their favourite activities, and the Year 9s working with the Seibo students to teach each other about their language and culture. Thank you so much to all staff, students and families who were involved in the short-term exchange.

Think back to when you graduated High School. Many of us graduated with academic results but did we graduate with independent life skills?

As part of our commitment to the wellbeing of our students, the Year 12 cohort have been participating in a Flexible Learning Program (FLP) coordinated by the College and facilitated by guest speakers and staff. Not only serving as a break from their rigorous studies, the FLP is designed to prepare students for the ‘adult’ world. As voted by the students, general life skills such as cooking, financial planning, applying for a rental property, completing a tax return and men’s and women’s health have been amongst topics addressed. Christopher Richardson & Daniel Kitson

Tayla Ames & Blake Dahlitz

At the end of 2019 we look towards celebrating the graduation of 117

well-informed individuals, who are able to negotiate post-college terrain with a sense of

confidence and foresight.

Graduating with Life Skills

‘The cooking session was beneficial as it showed how to make a meal and plan a meal for a small amount of money whilst also showing us how to save money.’Molly Wellman

‘I found the financial lesson very beneficial as I learnt a lot about the different sorts of ways to save money. The cooking lesson also gave great insight into the prices for chicken just because of how it is cut rather than the quality of cut.’ Ashley McInerney

‘I found the session to be pretty fun, something I didn’t really expect but was pleasantly surprised with. I learnt some pretty useful information that I will be using in future.’ Daniel Kitson

While some of us are still tucked up in bed some students from our School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) program are already in a workshop, out in the vineyard or at a Community

Childcare Centre getting a head-start on their future careers.Students are flourishing under the support and guidance of VET Coordinator Dianne Sanders, who undertakes thorough counselling sessions and fills out forms with students prior to their commencement, to ensure the right students are placed with their most suitable employer. Crucial planning and ongoing support takes place to ensure students keep their school, work and training commitments in balance, and scheduled site visits identify potential areas of support throughout the program. The students are in their chosen workplace at least one day per week and additional theory classes take the place of one or more school subjects and attracts SACE credits. After successfully completing SACE, students convert to a fulltime apprenticeship. Upon meeting some of these students it’s impressive to learn that many of them work full time in the holidays in addition to their school study commitments, already displaying critical skills including respect, communication and teamwork, dedication and diligence to undertake the responsibilities of holding a job.

LUCY ZILM, YEAR 12School Based Trainee (SBAT) at Open Arms Community Childcare Centre, Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care at TAFESA Describe your average weekMy average week I go to school Monday to Thursday and study English, Art, Drama and Research Project. I work at the Childcare centre on Fridays 7.30am-3.00pm. I spend all of my study time at school completing my online training in Cert III in Early Childhood Education and Care. Why did you take on a School Based Traineeship?I wanted to complete a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care by the time I finished school so that when I am at Uni I will have a means of support and also an alternative pathway if my uni plans don’t work out.How are you supported at Faith Lutheran College? I have meetings every other week to make sure I am on track and I get a study line to enable me to complete online training. All the teachers are really considerate in helping me make sure I catch up on Friday’s lessons. What do you find challenging?I guess having an extra lot of work with its own assignments and deadlines. I have the pressure to complete this with trainers who don’t know you as well as the teachers at school.Would you recommend an SBAT to other students?Definitely. If you find something that you are passionate about and are willing to put the work in, it’s definitely worth it. Next year hopefully I’ll go to uni to study Costume Design and work part time in Childcare.

Year 12 Drama Ashputtel

‘Since early Term 2, the Year 12 Creative Arts class has been working on an elaborate production of Ashputtel, the Grimm Brothers

version of Cinderella. We have spent our class lessons focussing on memorising lines, developing our characters and working on polishing blocking amongst a professional on-stage environment. My character was the Elder Sister, who desperately wants to marry the Prince, and despises stepsister Ashputtel. I focussed developing my character with mannerisms, a specific walk, and a voice, and spent much of my class time working on keeping this all consistent. Along with this, I was in charge of music across the whole production. This involved finding songs such as the ball piece, writing the vocal line for Ashputtel’s solo, and writing and recording the dove “rookity-coo” song. Overall, this production has given me the chance to refine my acting skills, use my music knowledge, and become closer with the talented individuals in my drama class.’ Ellie Schaefer

‘Year 12 Creative Arts has given me the opportunity to immerse myself into a professionally run show where I was granted the privilege to create the costumes

worn by the actors involved. The main character Ashputtel is imprisoned in her family home where she is forced to cook and clean, however, her life turns upside down when her ugly stepsisters are invited to the Princes’ ball. This presented me with an opportunity to create a transformation dress, a design I have never tackled before. After weeks of refining my concepts, the dress was made out of a beautiful curtain that I found. The transformation gown worn by Ashputtel was an unexpected surprise to all of the audience members.’ Lucy Zilm

‘Over the past few months, I worked on improving my theatrical makeup skills. I created face charts for each of the characters that would help individualise

them, making them unique to one another. It was also my job to design the hairstyles for all of the characters. I used the hair and makeup to make the stepsisters and stepmother look over dramatically doll-like which helped create the effect of Ashputtel being naturally beautiful.’ Theresa Morley

10, 20 and 30 Year Alumni Reunions

A cknowledging the graduating classes of 1989, 1999 and 2009, guests delighted in a relaxing afternoon of food, wine and live music on Sunday 15th September at the Wine Education Centre. Once the ice was broken and nerves subsided, reminiscing lead to laughter and some colourful tales. Fascinating stories

included the location of the original school classrooms in the St John’s congregation car park in 1985. Students visited Tanunda Lutheran School for Art Lessons, Home Economics was carried out in the homes of parents, and Science classes were held in the Brauer’s laboratory. The whole school operated within 4 rooms, a stark contrast to the extensive and modernized classrooms the Faith alumni toured during the day. As many alumni embraced during farewells, it was clear the value of setting aside Facebook for a real-life update could not be overlooked.

BEN CHIPMAN 1991 - 1994After school, Ben moved to Adelaide to follow his passion of working with cars. Ben worked in customer service and the parts department for the Holden Dealership dealing with over one hundred vehicles a day. Ben played football at Payneham Norwood Union with a couple of Faith boys and enjoyed a fun social life during his five or so years in the big smoke. It was then he decided to start seriously working with wine. Ben sat the mature age test and wrote a letter which ultimately saw him accepted into Adelaide University to study Wine Marketing. Soon after, Ben began working for Robert O’Callaghan at Rockford Wines as a casual employee in Cellar Door. In 2004 Ben stepped into the winery for 18 months and reached the position of Cellar Door Manager, while also making wine as a hobby. Ben then travelled to Spain to learn more about the old world of wine. Upon returning to Australia Ben worked for the Canute family at Rusden Wines where he enjoyed looking after the Sales and Marketing role in a small family business. In Ben’s words ‘Having kept Tomfoolery Wines (the little pipe dream) simmering since 2004 with the help of Toby Yap, the Canute Family and of my incredible wife Sarah (whom I met at Rockford and married in 2009) Sarah and I bought our 20 acre Vineyard in 2011. We had our first child Oscar in 2013, built the winery in 2014 and had our second child Scarlett in 2015. My wife and I are making wine and growing grapes, dealing with and supporting many of my ex-classmates and/or families of the school within our amazing region we call the Barossa.’

JEFF KRIEG CLASS OF 1995

As written by Jeff…After high school, I completed a Bachelor of Industrial Design at UniSA and have been employed as a Joinery Designer/Set Out Technician for one of Australia's leading joinery companies ever since. But, as grateful as I am for it, my job is not what drives me and it is certainly not what defines me. My life is about all the stuff in between. The little things. The passions, the hobbies, the people, the joys, the chocolate, the coffee, the love - and the smiles and laughter of my two little girls. This is life!My wife Jen and I live in Adelaide's northern suburbs. Our two girls, Mykayla (5) and Gemma (2) are the love of our lives and we dedicate all of our spare time to them. I am currently finishing off hand-building my own recording studio and workshop - as I still love to write and record music and also build hand-made guitars. I still enjoy sport and although I don't play any competetively anymore, I still like to keep fit and stay active. As well as this, I am photographing South Australian birds of prey for a book I am writing on the same topic - an 8 year (thus far) project which will hopefully be completed in 2020.If I could inspire the coming generations by telling them anything it would be this: Life is not about wanting to do something or be something "extraordinary" - life is about seeing the extraordinary within the ordinary. Be confident and happy with who you are and what you do because we don't need accolades or society's measuring stick of "success" to be successful. For me - I am an every day person who loves the extraordinary blessings that I have in my every day life. And "love" in its many different forms, is the glue that holds it all together. So love with all your heart, laugh often and look for the brilliance in the little things. If you can't find it there, you'll never be happy searching for it somewhere else. Life is a gift. Jeff
