But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31
Pastoral Epistle: Out With the Old, In with the New?
It’s something of a tradition to make resolutions as one year draws to a close and another begins. Though there is little difference, really, between December 31 and January 1, some-thing about that turning of the calendar page makes it an obvious place for a fresh start. Whether it’s a new diet or a stricter budget, exotic travel plans or the rekindling of an old friendship, resolutions carry the air of “out with the old, in with the new.” And 2020 is cer-tainly a year that most everyone is ready to toss out entirely. Good riddance! But should we be so eager?
As this year ends, I invite you to consider with me the many, many positive outcomes of the strange year that was 2020. For even in the midst of 2020—dare we say in spite of 2020?—more people are coming to church. Bible study attendance has increased. Our youth group attendance has tripled from this time last year. More and more people around the nation and even around the world are reached every week by online devotions and rec-orded sermons.
But it’s not just the numbers, is it? Families are enjoying devotions together around the din-ner table. Saints are sharing in God’s Word across the generations. Folks are singing the hymns a little louder than before. Things seem a little different than they were, and in a good way. As in the trials and tribulations endured by past generations, Christians here and around the world have been forced to consider what is truly important.
God has greatly blessed the saints at Faith with this renewed strength, hope, and faith. Let us never lose it! Keep coming to church and Bible study and youth group. Keep reading the Bible and singing the hymns. Pray without ceasing. Share God’s Word with everyone you meet. Through this year Faith Lutheran Church has grown and grown stronger. Here’s to another year—and many more!—of receiving God’s good gifts, growing in faith, and abounding in love. Happy New Year!
