with Trunk-or-Treating

Wednesday, October 25 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Everyone is invited to the Faith Family Harvest Celebration with Trunk-or-Treating on Wednesday, October 25, 5:30–7:30 p.m. Our event theme this year is called “SHINE BRIGHT…LITTLE LIGHT.”

Let your light SHINE! —Matthew 5:16

This is a special Harvest event for everyone in the community with pony rides, petting zoo, inflatable’s, games, face painting, crafts, food, fun and fellowship. Refresh-ments will be available such as hot dogs, chips, lemonade and more.

Join the youth, children and “fun” adults “Trunk-or-Treating.” This is a safe alter-

native to "trick or treating" and gives eve-

ryone an opportunity to wear their cos-

tumes. Adults and teens can have a blast planning and decorating their vehicle. Decorate your car with an approved theme. (Registration forms are available through the Church Office or on www.faithrus.org.)

We are collecting donations of candy or treats throughout the month.

Cars will be lined up with trunks full of goodies and games. Note: We ask that all participants—trunks and costumes—not use scary items. It will be a time full of laughter and memories.

We also ask each family or participant to bring a non-perishable food item to support our Food Pantry. This is a great time to outreach and invite your friends and neighbors—so spread the word!

Another exciting Flea Market is coming and we need you—able-bodied men and women to set up tables and signs and to start unloading the crate and the garage on Friday, October 13, and Sat-urday, October 14. See

complete schedule on

this month’s calendar.

Sneak Peek Sale Night

Wednesday, October 18, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. is what we call Sneak Peek Sale Night, and we charge $5/person to get in on that night only. This is when we have a lot of dealers and resellers attend.

This charge helps offset our advertising cost. There is no charge Thursday – Saturday. Our Faith Family can “sneak peek” anytime especially if you volun-teer to help!

to let her know when you are available to work.

Bring a Brown Bag Lunch on October 16, 17 and 18. Food is available on sale days, and we will always have donuts (or coffee cake) and coffee.

Come share the fellowship of the terrific Flea Market group! We need large brown paper bags for Bag Day!

If you have ever been on a cruise, you will recall that shortly after embarking there is a call on deck for all pas-sengers. We are to go to our stations for a review of safety procedures. Well, today I call everyone on deck as Faith Community Church is about to embark on a new journey under a new captain.

It has been my pleasure to serve as your Interim Captain for the past five months. I want to say thank you to our crew of volunteers who have worked tirelessly with me during my time here at Faith Community. I know that many times you must wonder if your efforts were ever no-ticed—let alone appreciated. I have always been reluctant to name our volunteers for fear of missing someone and so make matters even worse. So, to all members of God’s crew from teachers, to refreshment servers, to choir members, to the one who changes the pic-tures on our notice board, to the person(s) who lock up the facility following Sunday ser-vices a very special thank you for your ministry. God’s Church depends on volunteers

such as you. Although seldom in the spotlight, please do not think that your work goes by unnoticed or unappreciated. Thank you as well to all our department heads especially in the music ministry field.

I also want to single out our elders and deacons and our PNC Committee for your work over what has been a very chal-lenging year. You are the elected leaders within our church, and I cherish the thought that you were there to share the duties and responsi-bilities of ministry with me.

Every ship has a special crew on the bridge to make certain that the ship remains afloat. Thank you to Sally, Eric, Kim, Fran, Justin, Michele and Jazz for their faithful service. I know it is not an easy thing to work with new personnel aware that they are only going to be on board for a short period of time, but you all did a terrific job and I am grateful.

To all members and adherents of the ship called Faith Com-munity, thank you for welcom-ing Jill and me into your homes. It was a privilege for Jill and me to have sailed with

you over the past several months. You have made us feel as members of the family and we shall never forget you.

Now, there is a new sailing sea-son ahead of you and you will be directed by a new captain. But, never forget that this new captain will have received his orders from a hierarchy above him. He will need your assis-tance and prayers that together you will be able to sail the seas that God has laid out before you. Working together, may you en-joy the challenges of the ports of call that lay before you. Bon Voyage!

Love from

John and Jill

What a storm! Did you lose power? Did you have any damage? When did your power come back on? This was the chatter for several weeks after Hurricane Irma. Trees were pulled out of the ground, power lines were down, wooden fences were blown over and even metal commercial signs were mangled or brought down. This was definitely the most powerful storm that I have witnessed. Our properties were really tested.

This reminds of a song our children sing. Maybe you remember it:

The wise man built his house upon the rock.

and the rains came tumbling down!

The rains came down and the floods came up.

And the house on the rock stood still.

The foolish man built his house upon the sand.

and the rains came tumbling down.

So build your life on the Lord Jesus Christ.

And the blessings will come down.

The blessings will come down

as the prayers go up.

So build your house on the Lord.

Maybe this is a good time to check our founda-tions. We may need to rebuild or remodel, but let’s be certain Jesus Christ is the foundation of our lives.

Build Your House on the Rock.

In Matthew 7:24-27 we read:

Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Nursery On Sunday mornings, the nurs-ery is available for our infants and toddlers, up to age two dur-ing our 9:20 contemporary ser-vice and up to age five during our 11:00 a.m. traditional ser-vice. Our nursery nurturers provide a wonderful, loving, safe environment. The nursery is also available throughout the week during Mom 2 Mom Bi-ble study, Faith Connection and special events.

Pioneer Clubs Exciting new experiences await children who attend Pioneer Club. Children, age 2 through grade 5, have an opportunity to participate in Pioneer Clubs during our mid-week ministry Faith Connection. The purpose of Pioneer Clubs is to help children put Christ in every as-pect of life by recognizing him as Savior and Lord and devel-oping a lifestyle based on bibli-cal values. The biblical lessons for kids help them learn about God, the Bible and themselves, as they explore fun activities and make new friends.

Did you miss registering at the beginning of the new school year? NO PROBLEM! It is never too late to register. Each unit is 4 weeks long so you are welcome to join us at any time throughout the 2017/18 school year.

You can obtain an application in the Church Office or the Preschool Of-fice or online at our website. Schol-arships are always available by re-quest.

If you are interested in knowing more about Pioneer Clubs, becom-ing a leader or assistant for 2017/18 or sponsoring a child, please contact me anytime.

Sunday Morning

Children age two through second grade begin Sunday School at 9:20 a.m. in their classroom. Children in third through fifth grade attend with their family during Praising

God in Song time in worship and then are dismissed to their Sunday School class.

We are using DiscipleLand curricu-lum. This comprehensive system helps kids become Christ’s disciples for life. It is a complete plan that ensures children achieve balanced growth in Bible knowledge, Christ-like character and faithful conduct—everything kids need to live as de-voted followers of Jesus. (Disciple-Land.com)

Children, in Kindergarten through 5th grade, attend Children’s Church during the 11:00 a.m. service.

Little Lambs Playgroup

Our weekly playgroup meets once a week on MONDAYS from 11:15 – Noon in the older nursery.

This is a time when young children are in-troduced to the Bible stories about God and his Son, Jesus. There is circle time with singing and stories. This is a great time for you and your child to fellowship with others.

SPECIAL…On the first MONDAY of each month our playgroup has the opportunity to go outside.

This playgroup is a great stepping stone into Mom’s Morning Out and the Preschool.

Invite your friends and enjoy the fun!

There is a place for every child at Faith Community Church.

Listed here are the many opportunities for children.

Good News Club We are excited to see what God has planned for the 2017/18 school year. We will start our 7th year of club at Orange Grove Elementary on Monday, October 2.

This year, our first series of lessons is “God: The Creator King.” This is a wonderful series of lessons that will help chil-dren know God, understand their need of salvation, and con-clude with helping them have a growing relationship with their Savior.

It takes about 8-10 volunteers per week to provide all aspects of club which includes relationship building, music, Bible memorization, Bible lesson, mission and review games.

We are looking for volunteers on and off the school campus: Grade shepherds – People who build wonderful rela-

tionships directly with the children at club each week. This is our greatest need right now!

Prayer partners - folks who are willing to pray for the club, volunteers and the children’s requests we receive each week.

Supporters - We are in need of donations. o The cost to rent the classroom is $38 per week o The cost per Bible is $6 o Gummies o Special Goodies & Incentives

Good News Clubs (GNC) through Child Evangelism Fellow-

ship (CEF) is making a difference in the lives of children. If you have any interest in getting involved with this wonderful outreach ministry or would like additional information, please contact me. Come and join the team!

9:00 – 11:00 AM Faith Church Playground

Our next gathering is SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Bring your kids out for a great morning of fun and mak-ing memories. Give your child(ren) something they can ONLY GET FROM YOU...a little piece of you, your time and attention. Added bonus: Moms get some downtime, too. As always, refreshments are provided for both kids and dads, but most importantly just plan to come out and have some FUN!!!

Remember, don't worry if you don't know anyone...it's a friendly group and how can you go wrong with coffee and donuts? Moms, if dad can't make it then YOU come and join us. This is about our kids and building relationships. Ashlyn and I hope to see all of you.

Reminders: We meet the THIRD Saturday every month from 9:00 to 11:00 am

on the playground at Faith Church. If it's raining, we can always take it inside!

Please mark your calendars and hold the dates so you can come join us. We do meet year-round and we encourage you to "come-as-you-can."

We welcome all dads (and grandpas, uncles, moms, grandmas, aunts if dads can't make it) and kids. Although many have "gradu-ated" VPK and started Kindergarten and even 1st grade, everyone is STILL WELCOME TO COME! This is all about having fun and providing a great opportunity for connecting with your kids and other parents.

Older siblings are welcome (as always) to join too, but the primary age group is our preschool kids.

Our Facebook page is: www.facebook.com/SaturdadsOfFaith and you will find an event for each monthly meeting. Please like our page, join our page and invite friends to come out and enjoy time to-gether.

If you have alternate or additional email addresses you would like me to use, please forward along. I continue to update the distribution list and will continue to keep your information private.

Please feel free to invite others to come join in the fun. We welcome friends, family and neighbors to our play date!!!

September has come and gone so quickly. We are moving swiftly into the season of fall, which means pumpkin-spiced everything, mini-sized candy bars, and the Flea Market. Our congregation is still going through so many changes, but change seems to be the only thing that is constant in our lives. We experienced a literal storm last month and many of us are going through other types of storms and adversities, but the one true constant is the love and faithfulness of our God. Our students can and will be facing storms at school, with friends and extra-curricular activities. Be there to bear these burdens with your students and seek oth-ers to help you bear your own. The school year is upon us—it will not relent—so find rest and refuge on the rock of Jesus Christ.

The month of October is going to be as hectic as ever. We have a couple of massive events that will need the hands and feet of Jesus. These are the dates to set reminders for and put down on your calendars. Friday October 13 – 17 – Flea

Market move-in and set up from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

October 18 – 21 – Flea Market is open. We will also need help break-ing down

October 25 – Harvest Celebration (Deco-rate your trunk, bring treats, and wear a cos-tume)

October 31 – Haunted House put on by our youth leader, Mak Ralston

On Wednesday nights, we will be con-tinuing our series on the 7 deadly sins, or as I have studied them, “The Glitter-ing Vices.” Youth group meets from 6:00-7:30 p.m., but parents are more than welcome to drop their students off a little prior to 6:00 for dinner. For $3 stu-dents will have pizza and a drink. We are also doing something I call, “The Ice Box Challenge.” Students are able to get an ice pop after youth group, if they put their phone in a basket until after youth group is over. Phones are locked away in a secure location, so do not worry.

There is Sunday School for middle and high students from 11:10 a.m. - Noon. We are currently studying through the book of Acts. This is an in-depth look at what happened after Jesus gave the Great Commission to His disciples. This command from Jesus applied to His fol-lowers in ancient times and still applies to modern day Christians. We do have Bibles here at church, but please encour-age your students to bring their own on Wednesday nights and Sunday morn-ings. If you or your student needs prayer, all you have to do is ask and we will pray.

Aloha,

Justin

Director of Student Ministries

Our thoughts and prayers are with the following who have lost loved ones recently:

Nick and Lica Simons and family—Nick’s mother, Jackie Simons, died September 7, 2017. John and Suzanne Cruick-shank and family—Suzanne’s mother, Helen Clune, died Saturday, September 9, 2017.

We believe that Jesus died and rose again; and so it will be for those who died in Christ. God will raise them to be with the Lord forever.

*Operation Christmas Child!

Remember… Continue Shopping for and Filling Shoeboxes

We only have a few weeks to go, so PLEASE pick up a

shoebox in the Narthex or in the Church Office. We are so close to our goal of 200 boxes. Less than 35 plastic boxes remain to be picked up! And even if you are un-able to fill a box, you could donate $9, which is the cost to ship the boxes to the chil-dren.

Information sheets with labels are in each box.

Bring happiness to a child this Christmas!

*Please return your filled boxes by

NOVEMBER 5!

Food Pantry

The need for nonperishable food items is critical at this time of year for the Food Pantry we support. If every-one coming to the worship services brought just one, we would have almost 300 items, which would go a long way to help someone who is hungry.

Dish Towels Needed…

We are in need of new dish towels for our church kitchen. Ours have gotten old, ragged and stained—so if you are shopping for some new ones—pick up one or two for our kitchen!

Opportunities To Help Others

Help at Faith Café— physically and/or finan-cially (weekly program)

Support financially and/ or make pillows for children at All Chil-dren’s Hospital (ongo-ing)

 Usher/Greet at Sunday Worship Services

Work at Food Pantry and/or give financial support

Knit or crochet prayer shawls and/or baptismal blankets

October is a very busy month here at Faith Community Preschool. All of our fall programs have started. Our extended hours started with a great group of three and four-year-old chil-dren enjoying lunch and playground time together. Chapel and Music are also in full swing with Kim Gunthner directing the program.

October Calendar: October 18, 19 & 20 – Grandparents’

Days October 25– Harvest Celebration with

Trunk or Treat

Our preschool has a great enrollment for all ages—2 year olds through 4 year olds. We have a few openings in our 3 year old classes. Do you know anyone who would benefit from our program? We also offer a Mother’s

Morning Out program for children ages 20 months – 3 years old. It is offered Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – noon. It is a fun time of socialization for your young child. Call the preschool (392.5113) if you are interested in more informa-tion about any of our class openings.

We feel that we are truly blessed at Faith Community Preschool with a professional and caring staff, delight-ful children and loving parents.

Thank you for your donations and prayers. Our needs are being met be-cause of a supportive church family.

May God bless you all,

As I write this month’s Steward-ship article, I realize how blessed all of us are that Hurricane Irma did not directly strike our neighborhood and that most of us had little or no damage as a result of the storm. While there is still much to do in the cleanup process and many of us had to cope with no electricity for a few days, we thank God for our safety and the safety of our church. As we keep an eye on another storm in the Caribbean, we pray again for the citizens of those islands for their safety and pray again that it stays well off-shore from our home state.

One thing about these crises though is that it is always refresh-ing to get back to our normal way of life and the comforts of our home and family. Yes, there are still challenges but our new per-spective brings optimism and ex-citement about the future. The same holds true for Faith Church these days. While the past year has had some difficult times and challenges, we are inspired by the spirit that our congregation has shown at our recent Sunday ser-vices. As we welcome our new pastor, Dr. Dillon Thornton, we are excited about the prospects of his ministry and the fresh perspec-tive he will bring to us about the Scriptures and our Christian lives.

Faith Press October 2017

By the time this is printed, Pastor Dillon and his family will have experienced the love and minis-tries that are alive and well at Faith and we hope and pray that you, too, will be inspired to sup-port the church more than ever in the coming months.

We have launched our Steward-ship Campaign earlier this year and will be communicating more frequently than ever to make sure that this year’s campaign—New Beginnings…Strong Future—reaches every member of our church. Just as our communities recover from the past few weeks of storms, our church needs your support to recover from the fi-nancial challenges of the past several months. Your response over the past few months has been encouraging and your church leadership believes we have met the challenge and are prepared for the Strong Future that our theme promises. We ask that you take the extra time in the coming weeks to consider your pledges to support the church in 2018 and that in October you make the commitment to our New Beginnings…Strong Future in bringing God’s word more alive than ever to the Faith Community family.

Ken Banks, Elder Bob Decker, Elder Stewardship Ministry Co-Chairs

As October comes and goes, we suddenly find we are quickly overwhelmed by the thought of Thanksgiving and Christmas preparations. This year let us plan well in ad-vance to acknowledge to Whom we are thankful, and because of Whom we even have a Christmas holiday. And let us determine that early De-cember 2017 will be the time frame in which we invite our neighbors, golf league, co-workers, or any other group of friends and acquaintances to hear about how "God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not per-ish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)

Not sure you have the confi-dence to share the Gospel? In this case, you don't have to speak. You just provide the venue and refreshments and Christmas Gatherings will pro-vide you with a friend who will do the sharing.

Still not sure? Plan to attend the Christmas Gatherings In-

formational Meeting on Wednesday, November 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Faith Center. Learn how easy and fun this can be, as well as the extra blessing you will receive when you see how God uses you to bring others to Himself.
