Folktales are stories based on the way of life of people or places (their traditions) that have been told for a very long time.

Features of Folktales

-often use animals as characters to represent a human qualities

-characters are usually flat-- completely good or completely evil

-dialogue is frequently used to explain the character's nature

-characters are motivated by one desire (greed, love, fear, hated jealousy)

-removed from the real world

-usually unimportant and described vaguely (Long ago in a land far away...)

- were originally told orally

-lots of repetition; very rhythmic

-short and simple

-usually teach us a lesson (allegory)

-endings are almost always happy

Features of Fairy Tales

-magical creatures

-magical situations occuring frequently

-a down-trodden protagonist (orphan, stepchild, cast-out prince or princess)

-the protagonist goes through transformations (psychological, physical, or spiritual)

-the protagonist proves his/her worthiness before the transformation occurs

-the protagonist is pure good; the antagonist is pure evil (no gray areas)

-there are violence gruesome situations

-pattern of threes (three tasks, wishes, journeys)

Figurative Languagemetaphor- a comparison between two unlikely elements

e.g. :the curtain of night covered the busy city.

similie- a comparison between two elements using the words like or as

e.g. The water was as blue as a new born baby's eyes.

personification- a figure of speech giving an inanimate (unliving) object or abstract idea human characteristics for literary purposes.

e.g. The first rays of morning tiptoed through the meadow.

anthropomorphism- interpretation of animals with human characteristics or personalities

e.g. Mickey Mouse, Stan from Dog with a Blog, Jake the Dog, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

alliteration- using several words in the same sentence/paragraph/scene using the same sound

e.g. The wide whispering woods seemed foreboding.

Hyperbole- a greatly exaggerated truth (often used for humor)

e.g. I've told you a million times!

Onomatopoeia- naming an action or a thing according to what it sounds like.

e.g. The birds twittered and tweeted as they flew above me.

Drama Project- Pt. 1

For this assignment, you and your group will be converting the folktale or fairytale of your choice into a short drama you will perform for the class.

For 28 points:

5 to 7 minutes

Each person in your group needs to have a part in the drama (can be small or big) Each person needs to put equal effort into the creation of your drama You may use a folktale, fairytale, or fractured fairytale to base your drama Your play needs to include dialogue and stage directions You should have costumes for your characters A set is not necessary, but allowed Work hard, but have fun!The assignment is worth a 40 point test grade and will be based upon the rubric I have provided for you. Your drama will be presented in class on Friday, February 14, 2014.Along with your play, each member of your group needs to write his or her own one page paper describing the types of figurative language used in the folktale or fairytale you chose. Identify at least five types of figurative language, give an example of it from the text, and explain why it is the particular type of figurative language and how it functions in the text. For this part of the assignment, you will need to use your notes and graphic organizers. This paper will be due Monday, February 17, 2014. This portion of the assignment will be worth 12 points.

For this assignment, you and your group will be converting the folktale or fairytale of your choice into a short drama you will perform for the class.

- Jacob and Wilhelm

-Academics, linguists, cultural researchers, lexicographers, and authors

- From Germany

- Began collecting folktales and fairytales in 1806 from peasants, middle-class, and aristocrats

- Beginning in 1807, the brothers took the tales and began to edit and rewrite them to add dialogue, improve plots, and add psychological motifs

-their tales were not intended to be children's tales because of the content

-the violent nature of their tales is attributed to the medieval culture of the time

-Cinderella was recorded in 1812

-Serbian culture is dated back to the 6th century (1500s)
