The SThe SThe SThe SERPENTERPENTERPENTERPENT of Mof Mof Mof MANLLEUANLLEUANLLEUANLLEU

Manlleu is a town on the river Ter. Today the river banks are one of the

most relaxing places in the town. The Ter has always been important for

Manlleu: In the past people used to go there to wash clothes, and to

enjoy themselves.

The river is the site of some incredible legends, maybe because of the

thick fog which covers the landscape in winter.

Once upon a time, the area known as La Devesa was a thick forest where

you could easily get lost. People didn't dare to go there because in the

deep woods lived a terrible serpent.

The villagers knew about it and warned the children of its dangers:

”Remember children, the serpent is not an ordinary snake! It is as big

as a house, it has got hair on its head and wears a diamond as a

crown!”

-”It eats everything in sight: pigs, horses, donkeys and sheep; it eats

chariots, soldiers and priests... It's terrifying!”.

-”And if you don't believe it, go and see ---for yourself and you will find

out...”

One day a reckless young man named Pere dared to walk into the

Devesa forest. He discovered the serpent's nest on a millstone. He hid

behind some trees and watched the serpent. Suddenly the beast woke

up, left the diamond on the millstone and went to the river Ter to drink

some water - the serpent was afraid of losing the diamond in the river

so it always left it on its nest.

The young man saw the diamond there... “This is my chance” - he

thought. He grabbed it and ran away as fast as he could. “I am rich!”

he said.

The serpent came back from the river. You can't imagine how angry it

became when it saw the diamond had been stolen...

The serpent used its strange powers and followed the scent of the thief.

Pere ran to his house, thinking he was safe from danger. However, soon

the serpent was knocking at his door using its huge tail.

LOVE OF ARTEMIS and ORIONLOVE OF ARTEMIS and ORIONLOVE OF ARTEMIS and ORIONLOVE OF ARTEMIS and ORION

Orion was the most brave and handsome man in Greece, a mighty

hunter, an untiring dancer, a hearty eater. Many women loved him,

and so did the men, because of his generous nature and caring heart.

Orion loved the women as if he were their brother, and with the men he

formed his most intimate and physically satisfying attachments. Even

the gods and goddesses took notice of him, and enjoyed his company.

One day while he was hunting in the forest, he came upon a

beautiful young woman who was also hunting, with a pack of the finest

hounds he had ever seen. Both packs picked up the scent and they

hunted together. When the deer was caught and killed, Orion saw that

his companion was no more girl, but the Virgin Goddess Artemis herself.

He averted his eyes from her in respect.

Artemis and Orion passed the summer together. By day they

hunted and sported, challenging each other to foot races, archery, and

storytelling. In the evenings around the fire they bared their souls and

told each other about their lives, their lost loves, their secrets. Orion

spoke of the men he had loved and hoped to love again. Artemis spoke of

the nymphs who attended her, their love affairs, and her romantic

attachments to the goddesses and women of her cities. They became, in

short, fast friends. After a while their affection grew, but neither

admitted this because of Artemis' vow of chaste.

Apollo, Artemis' twin brother, did not want to see his sister break

her vow.So, one day when he saw Orion swimming in the sea, Apollo

challenged Artemis to an archery contest. He challenged Artemis to hit

the dot on the horizon (which was Orion). Artemis easily hit the target,

and wondering what she had hit, she ran down to the beach where she

found Orion's body, with her arrow through his chest. She suddenly

realized that Apollo had tricked her into killing her friend. She called

Asclepius, the god of medicine, but even he could not revive Orion.

Artemis placed Orion's body among the stars as a tribute to the

friendship they once shared, a reminder to all mortals that men and

women enjoy friendships of every variety and degree .So whenever she

looked up at the stars she could see her friend and also set it also in the

sky, behind Orion, as a warning to everyone under heaven of the

treachery of those who are false to their lovers and false to themselves.

Anyone who has ever seen the hill of Nagyharsány is never going to forget its huge sugar-loaf top. This top is actually a bare limestone rock

which looks like a field with ploughed deep furrows. Who could have ploughed these deep furrows into the hard rocks? Was it

magic or is this place cursed? Once upon a time there lived an old witch at the foot of Harsányi hill. She had a beautiful stepdaughter. By the time she got fifteen her beauty had been well-known far away. One day the devil visited the witch and when he saw her stepdaughter,

he fell in love with her. The devil said to the witch:„I want to marry your daughter!”

The witch was frightened, because she really loved her stepdaughter, and didn’t want the devil to marry her. She answered:

„I can’t give her to anyone! Prove me that you deserve her! She will be yours if you plough the Harsányi hill until sunrise, when the rooster

crows. If you can’t do it, then you have to go back to hell!” The devil liked the offer. He couldn’t wait for the night to come.

He put thirteen magical goats in front of his plough and began

ploughing. The witch was calm for a while, because she was sure that even the devil can’t plough the hard rocks. But when she looked out of

the window after midnight, the devil was getting closer to the top of the hill and almost finished the ploughing.

The witch was worried about her daughter as she was very scared that the devil could do what is impossible.

She had a brilliant idea. She climbed into the henhouse, where the hens and roosters were still asleep, because sunrise was far away. The witch

began crowing loudly, and all the roosters woke up.

There were only a few furrows for the devil to plough and then he heard a rooster crowing, then another, then another, and soon all the

roosters were crowing. The devil was very angry because he couldn’t marry the girl. He ran down the hill with his firing magical goats.

When he reached the bottom of the hill, he stamped his foot and disappeared into hell with his goats. In that place the hot spring water

of Harkany gushed out. That’s how the tricky witch outsmarted the devil.

The AThe AThe AThe AQUARIUSQUARIUSQUARIUSQUARIUS in the Lin the Lin the Lin the LURGROTTEURGROTTEURGROTTEURGROTTE

About ten miles in the north of Graz there is a cave called Lurgrotte

which has been known for ages. There is also a small creek that

disappears under earth where it flows right into this cave. Sometimes,

when the weather is bad and brings rain and violent thunderstorms,

the harmless creek can become really dangerous by growing into an

enormous stream that washes everything into the cave that is in its way.

Trees and trunks, stones and rocks, crops and mud. Only some miles

westwards the harmless creek, or sometimes angry stream, appears

again rushing out from a hole in the rocks and flows into the river Mur,

continuing its long journey into the sea.

Many years ago a poor but courageous and curious farmerland

decided to go deeper into the cave than anybody else had ever dared

to. Armed only with a torch, he stepped through the rocky entrance of

the cave and climbed down into the dark deep that had never been

visited by any other human being before. The torch couldn’t drive off

the darkness but it shone bright enough so that the brave man was able

to see huge domes of crystals and stalactites. They reached from the

ceiling to the floor and glittered and gleamed so brightly that the

farmer, overwhelmed by the beauty of this subterranean world, sank to

the ground near to a deep green and blue shimmering pond.

Suddenly the smooth surface of the calm water began to ruffle and out

of the tides raised a strange and wondrous figure. Scared to death the

man froze with fear and, unable to move, waited for the things to come.

The dark green figure with a shapeless body and a head, red as a

cock’s, reminded the farmer of a fish. It quickly came closer and sat

down beside him, and while the farmer lad was staring frightened and

Page 18: Fairy tale book (ETT Comenius)

curiously at the figure’s big hands and feet, with their webs between

fingers and toes, the Nöck (that’s how they also call Aquariuses

sometimes in our part of the country) began to speak with a voice that

seemed to come out from a deep well:

„I feel so lonely living down here under earth. Don’t ask me why I’m

cursed to spend my life in this cave“, he said rolling his frightening

eyes. „But let me tell you that I’m carrying some terrible guilt on my

shoulders, because I’ve treated

the water disrespectfully and neglected the source of all life in a very

bad way. Please, good man, have pity and bring me something to eat.

Some good food, a nice bottle of wine and a piece of cake would do

every now and then. Help me and I promise, you’ll be rewarded like a

king. “Relieved to get away with such a little favour, the farmerlad

promised the Aquarius to help him and came back to the cave the very

same day with the things he had asked for: smoked meat, some

sausages, cheese and bread. And a bottle of wine and schnapps.

While the Aquarius began to eat with ravenous hunger, still chewing

and drinking, he spoke: ”My name is LUR, and every time you come

down here and bring me some food, I’ll give you one of these“. He gave

the boy a small purse that seemed to be made of seaweeds and went on:

lead a religious life and above all: respect and honour the water, don’t

waste it, don’t pollute it. Otherwise you’ll get into serious trouble. “After

these words the farmerlad climbed out of the cave and as soon as he

had reached the daylight again, he opened the little purse and could

hardly believe his eyes: falling into his palms were wonderful crystals

and stones, shimmering and glittering and sparkling in all colours of

the rainbow. There were also pieces of gold and after some more visits to

the cave the former farmer became a very rich man. But as his

Page 19: Fairy tale book (ETT Comenius)

character and behaviour changed with his way of living, his luck

didn’t last long: he started to drink and beat up his wife and treated

his animals badly. The Aquarius, who had supernatural powers and

could see what others couldn’t, noticed the change in the man’s

character with every visit. He also could see how disrespectfully the

farmer treated the water. He talked badly about it, wasted it and put

all the waste and dirty leftovers from his farm into the creek Lur. One

day, when the Aquarius had seen enough, he took the farmer by his feet

and pulled him into the deep. Since then, the man has never been seen

again. His family went away and his farm became so run down that

today you couldn’t even tell where it was. Everything’s gone and the

only thing that has lasted until this day, is this tale of the Lurgrotte.

The GOLEMThe GOLEMThe GOLEMThe GOLEM

One of the most famous legends told about Prague is that of the Golem.

There are as many versions as there are tellers, but all of them agree on

one point – a golem is some sort of a clay creature with superhuman

strength which under certain conditions comes to life. How and why

this happens is where the different versions diverge.

In the sixteenth century, during the reign of the Emperor Rudolph II,

the great Jewish man of wisdom Löw ben Bezalel lived in Prague. He

was held in high esteem, which was why the Prague Jews elected him as

their rabbi, teacher and leader. One day, however, the emperor decreed

that all the Jews must leave Prague. The rabbi immediately went to the

palace to see the emperor. At first the emperor did not want to receive

him, but the rabbi used all his powers and finally the emperor listened

to his plea. The rabbi entertained the emperor with his spells and

showed him quite extraordinary things. The audience convinced the

emperor that the rabbi of the Jewish community was a man of

exceptional wisdom and powers. He reversed his decree and the Jews

were allowed to stay in Prague. From that time on, the rabbi was often

invited to Prague Castle where he would talk and debate with the

learned men of the imperial court. In return, they would often visit the

rabbi’s study, especially the emperor’s court astronomer Tycho de Brahe.

There were many times when the wise Rabbi Löw managed to avert all

kinds of perils that threatened the inhabitants of the Jewish Quarter,

but he knew too well that he would not live for ever. He therefore took

thought as to how he might protect his people and make provision for

the future. For a long time he studied in books and parchments until he

found what he was seeking. He decided to create an artificial man,

endowed with supernatural power, who would help the Jews in hard

times and in the fight against their enemies.

The rabbi confided in his two most talented pupils, and together they

took clay from the banks of the river Vltava and modelled a figure of

more than human size – a golem. While reciting the sacred words,

Rabbi placed the holy Shem, a piece of parchment with secret symbols,

between the golem’s lips, and all three waited. The Golem’s body

trembled, his eyes glowed red, and, after a moment, the golem sat up.

His size was terrifying.

Page 27: Fairy tale book (ETT Comenius)

The Golem was put to work, by day he helped in the synagogue, and by

night he walked the streets of the Jewish ghetto and with his horrifying

form made sure that no one came to any harm. He was obedient and

did everything that was necessary. Sometimes he went too far. One day,

when the rabbi’s wife ordered him to bring water to the tub, he brought

so much that he drowned the whole street, and when he was sent for

apples, he came back with the whole apple stall together with the

terrified apple-seller on his huge shoulders, so that the rabbi’s wife

could choose for herself. There was just one thing that the rabbi Löw

always had to remember. Before the Friday prayers in the synagogue

(the start of the Sabbath, the day of rest), the rabbi had to take the

sacred Shem from the Golem’s mouth so that he could also rest.

Otherwise, the tremendous power of the Golem would go out of control.

One day Rabbi’s daughter fell ill, and the wise man was at his wit’s

end, unable to help her. Because it was Friday, he departed for the

synagogue with his head full of worries and completely forgot about the

Golem. This proved to be a disaster. With the Shem still between his lips,

the Golem grew restless and went on a rampage. He ran through the

streets smashing windows, pulling down wooden house signs and

tearing them into pieces, breaking down doors and pulling up trees by

their roots.

Alerted by the shouts and screams of the people, the rabbi ran out of the

synagogue. “Stop!” cried the rabbi in a powerful voice. Immediately, the

Golem became gentle as a lamb and allowed the Shem to be taken from

his mouth and became inanimate. With a heavy heart, fearing that he

had created something too powerful, the rabbi took the Golem to the

attic of the Old New Synagogue and ordered him to lie down. The rabbi

recited the sacred words backwards and took the Shem from the golem’s

mouth. He locked the door and, to ensure the Golem remained

undiscovered, forbade anyone to enter the attic.

There the golem lay, for years, gathering dust, waiting until it was

needed to protect the Jewish people of Prague. After the rabbi died,

people forgot about the golem and most people even doubted that it had

ever existed in the first place. The attic room lay untouched for

centuries until one man decided to find out whether the legend of the

Golem was true. When they reached the attic room and broke down the

door, they found a huge pile of dust and rubble inside the attic.

TTTThere once lived a man and his wife, who had long wished for a child, but in vain. Now there was at the back of their house a little window which overlooked a beautiful garden full of the finest vegetables and

flowers; but there was a high wall all round it, and no one ventured into it, for it belonged to a witch of great might, and of whom all the world

was afraid.

One day that the wife was standing at the window, and looking into the garden, she saw a bed filled with the finest rampion; and it looked so

fresh and green that she began to wish for some; and at length she longed for it greatly. This went on for days, and as she knew she could

not get the rampion, she pined away, and grew pale and miserable. Then the man was uneasy, and asked, “What is the matter, dear wife?”

“Oh,” answered she, “I shall die unless I can have some of that rampion to eat that grows in the garden at the back of our house.” The man, who loved her very much, thought to himself, “Rather than lose my wife I will get some rampion, cost what it will.” So in the twilight he climbed over the wall into the witch's garden, plucked hastily a handful of rampion

and brought it to his wife. She made a salad of it at once, and ate of it to her heart's content. But she liked it so much, and it tasted so good, that the next day she longed for it thrice as much as she had done before; if

she was to have any rest the man must climb over the wall once more. So he went in the twilight again; and as he was climbing back, he saw, all at once, the witch standing before him, and was terribly frightened, as

she cried, with angry eyes, “How dare you climb over into my garden like a thief, and steal my rampion! It shall be the worse for you!”

“Oh,” answered he, “be merciful rather than just, I have only done it

through necessity; for my wife saw your rampion out of the window, and became possessed with so great a longing that she would have died if she

could not have had some to eat.” Then the witch said, “If it is all as you say you may have as much rampion as you like, on one condition - the child that will come into the world must be given to me. It

shall go well with the child, and I will care for it like a mother.”

In his distress of mind the man promised everything; and when the time came when the child was born the witch appeared, and, giving the child the name of Rapunzel (which is the same as rampion), she took it away

with her.

Rapunzel was the most beautiful child in the world. When she was twelve years old the witch shut her up in a tower in the midst of a wood, and it had neither steps nor door, only a small window above. When the witch

wished to be let in, she would stand below and would cry,

Page 35: Fairy tale book (ETT Comenius)

“Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair!”

Rapunzel had beautiful long hair that shone like gold. When she heard the voice of the witch, she would undo the fastening of the upper window, unbind the plaits of her hair, and let it down twenty ells below, and the

witch would climb up by it.

After they had lived thus a few years it happened that as the King's son was riding through the wood, he came to the tower; and as he drew near he heard a voice singing so sweetly that he stood still and listened. It was Rapunzel in her loneliness trying to pass away the time with sweet songs. The King's son wished to go in to her, and sought to find a door in the tower, but there was none. So he rode home, but the song had entered into his heart, and every day he went into the wood and listened to it. Once, as he was standing there under a tree, he saw the witch come up,

and listened while she called out, “O Rapunzel, Rapunzel!

Let down your hair.” Then he saw how Rapunzel let down her long tresses, and how the witch

climbed up by it and went in to her, and he said to himself, “Since that is the ladder I will climb it, and seek my fortune.” And the next day, as

soon as it began to grow dusk, he went to the tower and cried, “O Rapunzel, Rapunzel!

Let down your hair.” And she let down her hair, and the King's son climbed up by it. Rapunzel was greatly terrified when she saw that a man had come in to her, for she had never seen one before; but the King's son began speaking so kindly to

her, and told how her singing had entered into his heart, so that he could have no peace until he had seen her herself. Then Rapunzel forgot her terror, and when he asked her to take him for her husband, and she saw that he was young and beautiful, she thought to herself, “I certainly like him much better than old mother Gothel,” and she put her hand into

his hand.

She said: “I would willingly go with thee, but I do not know how I shall get out. When thou comest, bring each time a silken rope, and I will

make a ladder, and when it is quite ready I will get down by it out of the tower, and thou shalt take me away on thy horse.” They agreed that he should come to her every evening, as the old woman came in the day-

time.

So the witch knew nothing of all this until once Rapunzel said to her unwittingly, “Mother Gothel, how is it that you climb up here so slowly,

and the King's son is with me in a moment?”

“O wicked child,” cried the witch, “what is this I hear! I thought I had hidden thee from all the world, and thou hast betrayed me!” In her

Page 36: Fairy tale book (ETT Comenius)

anger she seized Rapunzel by her beautiful hair, struck her several times with her left hand, and then grasping a pair of shears in her right - snip,

snap - the beautiful locks lay on the ground. And she was so hard-hearted that she took Rapunzel and put her in a waste and desert place,

where she lived in great woe and misery. The same day on which she took Rapunzel away she went back to the tower in the evening and made fast the severed locks of hair to the

window-hasp, and the King's son came and cried, “Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair.”

Then she let the hair down, and the King's son climbed up, but instead of his dearest Rapunzel he found the witch looking at him with wicked

glittering eyes.

“Aha!” cried she, mocking him, “you came for your darling, but the sweet bird sits no longer in the nest, and sings no more; the cat has got her,

and will scratch out your eyes as well! Rapunzel is lost to you; you will see her no more.” The King's son was beside himself with grief, and in his

agony he sprang from the tower: he escaped with life, but the thorns on which he fell put out his eyes. Then he wandered blind through the wood,

eating nothing but roots and berries, and doing nothing but lament and weep for the loss of his dearest wife.

So he wandered several years in misery until at last he came to the desert place where Rapunzel lived with her twin-children that she had born, a boy and a girl. At first he heard a voice that he thought he knew, and

when he reached the place from which it seemed to come Rapunzel knew him, and fell on his neck and wept. And when her tears touched his eyes

they became clear again, and he could see with them as well as ever. Then he took her to his kingdom, where he was received with great joy,

and there they lived long and happily.

WWWWILLEMILLEMILLEMILLEM’’’’S JOURNEYS JOURNEYS JOURNEYS JOURNEY along the six mills of Oalong the six mills of Oalong the six mills of Oalong the six mills of OVERPELTVERPELTVERPELTVERPELT

A long, long time ago there was a miller Hendrik, who lived with

his wife and daughter in the Leyssenmill in Overpelt, made an

agreement with the Bokkenrijders. The Bokkenrijders were a gang

of robbers that closed a pact with the Devil and flew around on

their goats in the middle of the night. Hendrik’s agreement stated

that his harvest would be very good for the next fifteen years.

Hendrik thought, that after fifteen long and profitable years, the

Bokkenrijders would have forgotten about their agreement and

would never come back. But after fifteen years, they did return

and they claimed what they thought belonged to them: Hendrik’s

most precious treasure, his daughter Rosalinda... When Hendrik

found out, he immediately devised a plan to hide his daughter

from the Bokkenrijders. The Bokkenrijders, however, managed to

kidnap Rosalinda and they locked her up inside the ‘Sevensmolen’, one of the six ancient mills in Overpelt.

Hendrik was desperate and made an announcement to recruit all

young men in the village to help him free his daughter and bring

her back to safety. All men reported for the rescue because

Rosalinda was one of the prettiest, sweetest girls in the universe.

However, as soon as the men heard that Rosalinda was kidnapped

by the Bokkenrijders, they immediately backed out. Nobody ever

dared to interfere with the Bokkenrijders.

At last, a young boy called Willem, signed up for the hard task of

freeing Rosalinda. He was the son of the local baker. But against

all odds, he was the clumsiest, skinniest boy in town. So Hendrik

told him in all honesty that he would not stand a chance against

Page 40: Fairy tale book (ETT Comenius)

the powers of the Bokkenrijders. And the miller lost all hope to see

his daughter ever again.

But Willem, desperately in love with Rosalinda, ignored everything

Hendrik said and decided to follow his own path. At the first mill,

the ‘Slagmolen’, he met the wisest, most mysterious Bokkenrijder,

who told him that before Willem could reach his beloved

Rosalinda, he would have to endure a long, hard path, filled with

dangers. He was told that Rosalinda was locked inside the

‘Sevensmolen’ , and if he wanted to go there and rescue her, he

would have to follow a path. This path would lead him to all of the

mills in Overpelt, through a path in the local forest called the

‘Hobos’.

Then the Bokkenrijder told Willem what he had to do to reach the

second windmill, the ‘Bemvoortse molen’:

‘Find the light in the darkness.’

Willem kept looking for it, but without any result. After a while, he

realized that it was not literally the light he had to search, but the

light within himself. Besides, there was Rosalinda who to him was

also the light in his life. So he found the strength to get there

within himself because “One should be his own light in the

darkness.”. This was how he reached the ‘Bemvoortse molen’.

There the Bokkenrijders gave Willem the next riddle: ‘You have to

bring us the most precious jewels of nature.’ Willem started looking

for gold and gems. But he didn’t find anything which would be

suitable. Until the next morning, when he awoke in the forest the

‘Hobos’ and saw the light reflecting in the dewdrops on the grass.

Then he realized that these were the jewels of nature and that

beauty is often found in unexpected places. Afterwards, he reached

the third windmill, the ‘Kleinmolen’.

There he received his new challenge: ‘The path to success knows

many roads.’

Yet, after his long and adventurous trip Willem was getting

hungry. He arrived at a small house, where no one seemed to be

Page 41: Fairy tale book (ETT Comenius)

home. He had no time to wait until the owners got back, so he

decided, against his own values and standards, to steal the

delicious bread and the jar full of honey, which were unguarded

on the table. He kept following the path. But it seemed to be endless.

He kept walking and walking. And he reached the very same spot

over and over again. This is why he decided to leave the path and

cross the forest full of blackberry bushes and painful thorns. By

crossing the impassable roads, and by orientating on the river the’

Dommel’, he finally reached the fourth windmill, the ‘Wedelse molen’.

The Bokkenrijders got a bit scared and decided to make Willem’s

mission more difficult. Willem had to solve the mystery ‘Don’t let

your eyes deceive you’. He met an old lady who was trying to lift a

heavy cart. She asked Willem for help but he could only think of his

Rosa and had no time for more missions so he ignored the old lady

and walked on. At that moment the old lady changed into Rosa,

screamed in pain and disappeared into smoke. The Bokkenrijders thought they had won. Willem was really upset and wanted to

return. Nevertheless he hoped there was still a chance Rosa was

alive because the Bokkenrijders didn’t know that true love conquers

everything. So he carried on.

There was still one mill to go, the ‘Sevensmolen’, in which his love

Rosalinda was trapped.

The Bokkenrijders got really nervous now and were very angry

because Willem almost found Rosalinda. Their final move was to

send their strongest and biggest man to knock Willem down.

Willem wasn’t such a big man and couldn’t handle swords. But

fortunately he was smart. So he hid behind a tree and yelled mean

things to the Bokkenrijder. In this way he was able to distract him

and stole his sword. The Bokkenrijder thought a ghost was

following him and ran away in panic. Our brave baker’s son

arrived at the fifth mill and freed Rosa.

But when they arrived at the village, Willem immediately got

arrested for stealing the bread and the jar of honey. He got

sentenced to decapitation and he would be executed the next day.

Page 42: Fairy tale book (ETT Comenius)

Willem felt desperate. After finally finding Rosa, he was sentenced

to death!

The next morning the executioner took him out of his cell. Willem

had given up all hope to be with his beloved Rosa. Because even if

he wouldn’t be executed, who would like to spend life together with

a thief?

Willem was standing at the scaffold, looking at the executioner,

who lifted his cape and…

He was really astonished when he saw Rosalinda standing there.

She smiled at Willem and, in her turn, rescues him. Together they

fled into the wide world. Far away from all the Bokkenrijders!

Narrator: Long time ago, in Manlleu, there was a big snake. The people of Manlleu called it the Serpent. One

day, one boy, called Pere, stole the big diamond that the Seprent wore as crown. When the Serpent saw that

the diamond had been stolen, it got very angry and used its strange powers to discover the thief. While the

Serpent was doing that, Pere ran to his house, to hide the diamond.

Mother- Hi Pere what are you doing?

Pere- I have stolen the serpent’s diamond and I'm trying to hide it but I don’t know where.

Mother- Oh my God!! You have to hide it very well...

Pere - Yes, Do you know any place to hide it?

Mother- This house is not safe to keep the diamond. I think you'll have to hide it among the stars

Pere- Are you kidding me?

Mother- No, it's possible. You have to go Turkey and talk to Artemis. Maybe you can hide it in the

Orion constellation.

Pere- How can I go to Turkey?

Mother- You can go sailing across the Mediterranean Sea

Pere- Great idea!! Thanks for the help. I’m leaving immediately

Mother - Goodbye!! Take care…

Pere - Bye!!!

the sky and puts the crown on Orion’s head. Orion livens suddenly with the effect of the magical crown.

A: Artemis O: Orion

A: Orion, my dear love, is this real, are you alive? I really missed you.

O: Yes, I am alive. I missed you, too. Everyday I watched your beauty from the stars. Don’t tell me

anything but just embrace me. I want to feel your warmth.

A: My love, forgive me. I did not mean to aim at you, I wasn’t aware that you were swimming behind

the bushes. It’s been years that I carry the pain of remorse

O: I know my dear, do not regret. I haven’t doubted you for a moment. You are my only love.

A: Orion, if you wish that the effect of the crown is prolonged forever, you need to help someone

who falls in love with a girl. There is a devil in Hungary who falls in love and wants to marry the

O: Alright my love. I will go there immediately. I promise to return very soon.

A: I will be yearning and waiting. So long.

O: So long.

Our joint Fairy Tale (Part 4: From Graz to Prague)

Narrator: It is a sunny day. The Lur is sitting on a rock and listening to music with his earphones. He

wants to get a little bit sun tanned. The farmer is right next to him on a rock and he is looking for the

waste in the river Lur and wants to pick out the garbage of the water.

F= farmer L= Lur

F: Ah! What people throw away! So much today!

L: Don´t talk, clean on! Hop, hop!

F: Look at that, there are so many things. It´s amazing, what people throw away but they pollute

the rivers more and more. Here are leather pants and Lärcherlschnaps!

(The Lur became angry so he threw a small stone on the farmer´s head)

F: That hurts!

(Suddenly people come to the Lur)

L: Hey, who turned the light off, farmer?

F: Who are you? Don´t interrupt the Lur. Please get away from the sun.

Pere: My name is Pere, I´m from Spain, this is Orion from Turkey and the devil from Hungary.

F: Look, such wonderful things somebody had thrown into the river. Do you want to try it on?

(Orion puts on the pant)

F: You can keep it if you want. Do you want to help me cleaning the river.

Pere: Are there serpents in it?

F: No, I have never seen any.

(So they are cleaning the river together)

F: We have done a lot of work, let’s drink a little bit of the bottle I´ve found.

Pere: Now we are going to Prague, would you like to join us?

F: I have done my work and Lur has fallen asleep, I think I can leave him.

Our joint Fairy Tale (Part 5: From Prague to Kassel)

Rabbi: Hello farmer. Nice to meet you!

Farmer: Nice to meet you too! These are my friends – Pere, Orion and Devil.

Rabbi: What are you doing here?

Farmer: I need to find a way, how to keep our creek near Graz clean. I tried to clean it by myself, but I

can’t do that alone.

Rabbi: Hmm, well, I also have a problem here in Prague.

Student: The Jews are angry. They want to have the same rights as everyone else.

Rabbi: There was a time when even the emperor Rudolph II almost forbade them to live here! Fortu-

nately, that did not happen.

Farmer: Wow...

Rabbi: My point is, I want to show everyone that we are all the same people, no matter of what reli-

gion we choose to follow.

Student: That's right.

Rabbi: The world would be a better place if we all respect one another. We need to be nice to each

other. We can't just judge people of their religion and their beliefs!

Student: Great point.

Rabbi: We need to maintain peace! We are all the same people! There shall be no war. There shall be

peace.

Student: How will we manage to do this?

Rabbi: I have no idea, but I hope it will be solved eventually.

Student: I wish you luck, Mr. Low.

Rabbi: Thank you. It will be hard to maintain peace here, because everyone is different.

Student: Where are you going?

Farmer: To Belgium.

Rabbi: Really? Can I join you? I’ve heard there is a wise man called Comenius and he may be of some

help.

Our joint Fairy Tale (Part 6: From Kassel to Overpelt)

Rabbi Löw walked quickly down a street in Kassel and bumped into an old woman. The woman was Rapunzel’s

mother. She was very small and had grey hair.

He said: “I´m sorry that I bumped into you!”

“No problem“, Rapunzel’s mother said.

“Where are you going so fast? “, she asked.

“I am looking for a place to stay overnight (rest), I am on a long journey to Belgium“, said the Rabbi.

The women asked: “Do you have two minutes to drink tea with me?”

The man answered: “If you ask so friendly, then yes! “ So the Rabbi and the old woman went to have

tea and talked about their problems. At the end the woman said sadly: “I have a daughter and lost

her. “ The Rabbi asked: “Oh that is terrible! When did you lose her?” ”I lost her three years ago. Have

you seen her? She has long, blond hair and she is very beautiful”, said the mother. The Rabbi said:

“Mhhm, I don’t know, but I saw a young beautiful blond girl in a city called Overpelt when I was in

Belgium.”

“Have you got a serious problem, too?” the mother asked.

“Yes, I would like to have peace with people of all different beliefs. You know what? Because we

can’t solve our problems here I think we must go to Overpelt in Belgium!”

The woman said: “Yes, that’s a good idea. You really have got a big problem. And I want to go with

you to Overpelt to search for my daughter. Is this okay for you? ”The Rabbi Löw answered: “Yes, I

would enjoy company on my trip!”

Rabbi: Can we take a rest there? This trip is so exhausting, I'm really tired! Rosalind and Willem pass by, on their way to their new life. They stop to greet the two foreigners.

Willem: Good morning, I'm Willem and this is Rosalind. How are you doing? You look a bit pale, sir.

She's a very sweet and beautiful girl. She's got long blond hair. At that moment 'Comenius' enters and Rabbi Löw looks puzzled.

Rabbi: Who are you? I've seen you before. Are you following us?

Rosalind: Wait a minute, there was a wooden box in the mill where the Bokkenrijders locked

me up. I took it when I was freed and hid it in my father's house. I'll get it right away!

Rosalind runs away to get the box. Meanwhile all on stage start talking with each other for a

minute.

Rosalind: Here I am! Here's the treasure box, sir! Comenius opens the box by using the 7 keys. Everybody is really curious and tiptoes to see what's in it.

Rabbi Löw: Oh, there're only two small pieces of paper.

Comenius grabs the first piece and reads the magic charm written on it. He clicks his fingers and all

the characters from the previous tales are on stage. They are happy to see each other and shake

hands.

He then takes the second paper and reads:

There is no treasure so precious

as brotherhood between people

respect, friendship and acceptance

that everyone is different but also the same

money nor standing, nothing is the measure

let this be told

of what is the most important treasure

it's not beauty, it's not gold

it's only love and that is all

While listening to Comenius, some of the characters are touched, others join hands.

Comenius: Now I've delivered my message, it's time for me to go.

Never forget these words

Never say 'I didn't know'. Farewell, my friends!

And he disappears.
