BEETHOVEN Sonata No. 27 in E minor, Op. 90ELGAR Echo’s Dance from The Sanguine FanRAVEL Le Tombeau de Couperin GERSHWIN Rialto RipplesRACHMANINOV Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor, Op. 36 (1913)

Croydon-born pianist Freddy Kempf returns to Fairfield with a recital marking thecentenary of the First World War. The programme opens with Beethoven’s SonataNo. 27, composed exactly 100 years before the outbreak of the conflict. Elgar’sballet The Sanguine Fan was composed and performed in 1917 at the suggestion ofhis close friend and confidante Lady Alice Stuart-Wortley to raise money for wartimecharities. Each of the six movements in Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin is dedicatedto the memory of a friend of the composer who had died fighting in World War I.Composed between 1914 and 1917, the work is perhaps surprisingly light-heartedand reflective rather than sombre; but as Ravel commented, “The dead are sadenough, in their eternal silence.” The lighter tone continues with Gershwin’s playfulrag, Rialto Ripples, composed in 1917, before we are treated to the lushRomanticism of Rachmaninov’s Piano Sonata No. 2.

‘In Fialkowska’s hands, the notes wafted by in pearlyelegance. This was not a brash soloist but a moremodest collaborator, changing the star-vehiclenature of the modern piano concerto.’The Toronto Star

Enchanting audiences worldwide, esteemed virtuosoJanina Fialkowska performs Mozart’s Piano ConcertoNo. 24. At the summit of Mozart’s creative genius, thework’s unique quality is fashioned through theominous darkness of the minor key and atouch of Mozart’s elegance, rendering itall the more poignant.

Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overturedepicts the Scottish scenery at Fingal’sCave with mysteriously intensemelodies and calmer passages, capturing both the stormy tides andstill waters. Dvorák’s EighthSymphony is one of his mostexuberant works, drawing onBohemian folk music for inspiration.

‘She is a graceful, lyrical player with a sound like a fine-spun silver thread. Yet Iwas both impressed and emotionally moved by her playing of [Britten's] third suite.Clein was alert to every passing nuance.’ The Times

A display of quintessentially Czech music from two Bohemian legends, with Smetana’sexhilarating Overture to his first and most enduring comic opera The Bartered Bride andDvorák’s magnificent Cello Concerto, performed by world-class cellist Natalie Clein.Although composed in America, it expresses the melodic inflections derived from Czechfolk music with a continuous flow of invention and lyricism.
