Craig’sCommuniquéThe latest business news from

Chief Executive OfficerCraig Edmunds

Welcome to our first newsletter for 2019. We are now well into the new

calendar year and the hectic pace of our industry continues. The Company continues to be very busy across all divisions with excellent prospects and opportunities still ahead. In the past nine months our employee numbers have steadily increased with 40 new employees commencing with the company. We are pleased to have these new employees select us as their preferred employer and we are grateful to have them join us. Our direct employee numbers now total 376.

In our Tasmanian and Victorian Construction Reports you will read about a number of projects successfully reaching completion plus new projects recently secured and underway or about to start. The recent announcement of our North West team being selected to partner UTAS for the construction of the new $40m Burnie Campus is great news.

The Royal Hobart Hospital Redevelopment, despite the negative publicity is coming together at a rapid pace and is on target for completion later this year. With facades and external elevations progressively being finished, scaffolding and safety screens are being removed to expose an impressive looking building (see Page 8). Internally, works are very advanced with commissioning already commenced on the lower levels. The project team are doing an excellent job. On completion this will be a landmark building, providing the most modern health services for Tasmanians.

Construction of our new Bendigo offices has finally commenced with a pre-Christmas completion planned. This will provide us with new purpose-built and company-owned offices representing our Victorian headquarters. In a prominent location, in a growing area of Bendigo, our new offices will positively display our quality building capabilities.

Following the announcement of our divisional employee and apprentice of the year winners in our December newsletter, this edition announces our overall Fairbrother Employee and Apprentice of the Year winners for 2018. Each year this is an extremely difficult task to select an overall winner with so many exceptional employees who all excel in their

respective roles.

However, I am pleased to announce our Employee of the Year Winner is Bernard Schrammeyer from our North West Tasmania Division. Bernie played a key role in the successful delivery of the Devonport Living City project and is an excellent role model for the what the company stands for.

Our Apprentice of the Year Winner is Adam Gelston from Northern Tasmania. Adam has excelled throughout his apprenticeship displaying leadership qualities that

have led to him being provided roles with additional responsibility that he has successfully undertaken.

Congratulations to both Bernie and Adam and you can read more about their achievements on Page 9 of the newsletter.

A highlight event that is very worthy of mention is the inaugural Fairbrother Foundation Charity Ride that occurred in February this year.

A year in the planning by Royce and Kurt wanting to create a leisurely bike ride event to raise funds for the Fairbrother Foundation resulted in a two-day, 358km bike ride from Devonport to Hobart involving six Fairbrother cyclists and a further 11 cyclists representing consultants, suppliers, subcontractors and business partners.

Surpassing all expectations, the event raised in excess of $33,000 for the foundation. Well done to all the cyclists and the support crew for an amazingly successful event. Thank you also to everyone that donated to the event. I have no doubt this will lead to an even bigger and better event next year. Refer to the full report on Page 5.

Congratulations to those employees listed on Page 11 who have achieved years of service milestones. We proudly see our employees continually hitting major milestones, with David Parker achieving 30 years of service and Scott Cole, Adrian Lynd, Tim Hurford and Craig Saville all achieving 20 years. Congratulations and thank you for your contribution and loyalty.

I am pretty sure our editor will sneak my name onto the milestone list as well, so on that basis, I will take the opportunity to say I have thoroughly enjoyed my 30 years with the company and sharing an amazing journey with a great team of people.

Inthe business

An update from Tasmanian General Manager Kurt Arnold

The beginning of 2019 has seen the commencement of 16 new apprentices across the state. Our annual Apprentice Introductory Day was held in Campbell Town recently and, from all reports, there is a level of excitement and enthusiasm with these guys commencing their new careers.Over the next few months, we look forward to delivering more apprentice development days. These days provide all our apprentices with additional life skills to help them become the best they can be.Facility Management:In February we welcomed Facility Manager Ben Turnor to our Southern FM team. A significant milestone for the division was achieved in April with the completion of the Mac Point Goods Shed project. This is the most significant project the FM division has completed since diversifying into the “small projects” market. Well done to all involved, particularly Andrew Martin and Daniel Iles. The quiet spell in the North and North West is over, with healthy work volumes around the state.Fairbrother Joinery:Joinery has been experiencing the ever-constant battle of moving project time frames. The joinery package at RHH for IJF Australia has taken longer to come online than anticipated, however the wave of activity is

about to commence! The marquee joinery project for the beginning of the year is CH Smith. This project includes fixed joinery and wall panels, plus the FF&E joinery. The volume of work, and the quality of work here is exceptional. The joinery workshop is having a new roof installed. The timing of this new roof coincides with the purchase of a new Biesse CNC machine. This new machine will replace the older Morbidelli and will significantly increase Joinery’s machine capacity. Construction North:Our Northern division is busy cracking on with four large projects - Riverside High School at $10m; Hotel Verge at $15m; Launceston General Hospital Paediatric Inpatient Unit at $18m and CH Smith at $29m.The April completion of the CH Smith project is a major milestone, marking the end of a 2.5 year journey for the project team. We must recognise Nathan Murfet, Ben Webb, Phil Berwick, Cam Davidson, Matt Sykes and the employees and subcontractors who helped deliver this great project. March saw Phil Roberts re-join the Fairbrother team after many years. Phil is a Project Manager/Estimator and has teamed up with Peter Adams and Jake Herbert at LGH PIU. Mid-April also sees us welcome Tom Yates as Trainee Project Manager/Estimator. Tom will team up with Site Foreman Tom Dare at Hotel Verge.

Construction South:Activity is aplenty in the South, and there has been a big push to bring a number of projects towards completion.Dan Murphy’s store at Newtown, the apartment building at 119 Newtown Road, UTAS Commerce Building, UTAS Midcity and Mona’s Solstice building are all lined up for completion in April and May.Site Manager Mick Johnson returns from long service leave to start the $20m Korongee Dementia Village project, Foreman James Gamble is on track for a June completion at Rosary Gardens, while Southern Cross Care’s $2.7m Springhaven Chalet commenced under Foreman Brayden Webb. North West:Work has been rapidly moving along at Statewide Independent Wholesalers in Breadalbane. A busy schedule has seen 12,200m2 of concrete poured over a 13-day window – a solid effort from all involved. The Cradle Mountain Visitors Centre has structural steel being erected and is in a good position to have the roof over Buildings 1 and 2 before the snow starts to settle. With a few days of snow already, Site Manager Bernie Schrammeyer and the project team have an adventurous winter ahead. We are delighted at the announcement we will partner with UTAS on detailed design and development for their $40m West Park Campus.

Inthe businessVic office under construction

An update from Victorian General Manager Mick Josey

The breaking news is we have commenced construction on our new Victorian head office in Bendigo.

With site demolition complete, the civil, in-ground and structural works well underway. The project is due for completion in December 2019; we will keep you all updated with photo’s in the coming editions of the Newsletter.

It is hard to believe it’s already April, a clear sign that we are busy in all areas of the State with current projects and plenty of future opportunities within the tender market.

The South West has been successful in securing the new Bega Lactoferrin Plant for Bega Cheese Limited in Koroit.

Bega have recently purchased the Koroit plant and the announcement of the $34m plant has shown strong confidence in the dairy sector which has been under pressure for a long period.

Our part is $7m, designing and constructing the pre-cast/structural steel building to house the state-of-the-art processing equipment manufactured in Germany.

This plant will be the largest in Australia and will contain Industry-pioneering equipment yet to be seen in Australia. It is

an exciting project to be a part of and one we hope will build a strong partnership with Bega.

Also in very recent news, we have been awarded the second stage of the Twin Rivers Primary School development in Echuca.

This is a $12.5m project, which will combine the local Special School in with the primary school that we completed in February 2018.

We look forward to the continuation of the relationship we have with the school and it’s community in Echuca.

Our current projects:

• Geelong College $23M, February 2020 completion

• Wills St Bendigo mixed-use development $14M, February 2020 completion

• Edgarley Aged Care Casterton $15M, March 2020 completion

• Ridley Feed Mill Bendigo $14.5M, March 2020

• Warrnambool SDS $14M, August 2019 completion

• Youth Justice Joint Venture $65M, April 2019 completion

• Multiple education projects circa $35M, December 2019 completions.

• Bega Lactoferrin Facility $7M, November 2019 completion

The fast-paced Youth Justice Joint Venture is nearing

completion with only minor defects and operational commissioning to be completed.

What a whirlwind project - two sites, $65M in value and completed in under 40 weeks.

To all those involved take a bow and be proud of what you have achieved as it is a truly remarkable project. Thank you.

In line with our sustainable growth strategies, we will now commence looking for another significant project within the Geelong region. We are building a capable team within the division and will align that team with another suitable project.

Staff matters

We welcome new First Year Apprentices Josh Kirkwood, Connor White and Ethan Mulqueen.

Additionally we have engaged three new carpenters to assist with our workloads. Please welcome Devin Brown, Ben Bacon and Mike Woefle.

Due to our successful tendering in the South West we are also in need of two more Site Managers, so if you hear of anyone with relevant experience please make contact to discuss.

RHH nearing completionMost readers would have last read about the RHH project in our September 2018 edition and at that stage we had just completed the structure.

We are now on the final journey to completion.

There has been a big push with the finishes trades, link-ways to connect into the existing hospital, the ground-level outdoor spaces and street ways.

The helipad was completed prior to Christmas 2018 and the roof works are now complete.

Fit-out is underway at various stages across all floors from

starting to lock up Level 2 to plastering started on Level 10. Painting has started on Level 8 and vinyl has started on Level 7.

The last of the 470+ façade boxes have been installed and three-quarters of the external scaffold has been removed.

All structural links have been installed and areas within the existing RHH buildings have been set up for the break-throughs.

All tunnels under the existing buildings are complete and site-wide infrastructure ring mains through the existing buildings and tunnels are complete.

Loading dock works have started, while the temporary construction gantry is due to be removed after Easter.

Key team members on site:

Rod Bennett - more than 4 years on the project

Luke Wardlaw and Phil Riley - 4 years in June

Heath Lovell and Cam Byers - arrived on site mid-February to help push program to completion

Mick Worker, Jason Devine and Kev Henricks - our attendant labour on the ground since 2016.

Ourpeople2018 Employee of the Year

2018 Apprentice of the Year

Bernard SchrammeyerDivisional Manager, Marcus Perkins says: “Bernie’s past 2 years has seen the delivery of one of the largest and most complex projects Fairbrother has undertaken to date. His ability to manage a site of three separate projects and, at times, 200 people, with his no-fuss attitude had been very impressive. The rapport he has established with the client, their project manager, subcontractors and our employees demonstrates how capable and easy to work with Bernie is.”

Chief Executive Officer, Craig Edmunds says: “With a number of successful large-scale projects behind him, Bernie’s track record speaks for itself. But it’s his display of company values and his leadership qualities that make him such a well-respected operator in the North West division ... and a worthy winner of 2018 Employee of the Year.”

Adam GelstonDivisional Manager, Nick Freeman says:“Adam has a really strong work ethic, is super-reliable and possesses confidence that sees him being drawn on by other apprentices and younger tradesmen. He has a great attitude and commitment, which will stand him in great stead for any future direction he may wish to pursue.”

Chief Executive Officer, Craig Edmunds says: “One of the things that impressed me about Adam was his mature attitude about being ambitious and wanting to advance, but not at the expense of learning all aspects of his trade. Adam has said he wants adequate time on the tools to learn the trade so that when he’s in leadership roles in the future he has credibility and confidence in his directions. His patience in working his way up the ladder is impressive.”

FairbrotherFoundationOur Scholarship recipients

Samuel BertramUTAS Degree: Bachelor of Science (Mathematics and Physics) Campus studying at: Newnham (Launceston)Why you chose this degree: I originally intended to study engineering, but having left school before achieving an ATAR score I had to start with introductory units that scaled from high school level. The big one of these was Mathematics. By the end of my first semester the idea of studying a degree in Mathematics was in my head, so I took another three units and by the end of it the only thing I could picture myself doing was Maths. That began in 2017 and I’m now in the second year of my degree.Highlight(s) of uni so far: At the start of every semester I get asked to get up in front of people and speak about what University is like, what I study, my journey and some of the struggles I’ve faced. The people in these groups are all like myself. People who never completed Year 11 and 12, they didn’t get good enough grades for Uni, or they simply want a career change. Meeting and helping these people is a humbling and rewarding experience. Where you hope to be in 10 years’ time: I want to be making a positive impact in education for the people of Tasmania. I hope to be doing something that gets more people into tertiary education and gives them that second chance at something they couldn’t do at 19 like the rest of us. If it’s not that, I would like to be teaching at the University and projecting my passion onto new students.Parent who works at Fairbrother: Tim Ferguson. Dad is a Construction Labourer. This is a very multi-skilled job from setting up scaffolding, cleaning up, building/removing bracing. One of his biggest passions - being an ex-mechanic - is operating and working with heavy equipment.

Mikaela Adams UTAS Degree: Bachelor of Architecture and Built Environments Campus studying at: Inveresk, Launceston Why you chose this degree: After studying a Diploma of interior design I knew that I was on the right path in regards to the type of career I would like to pursue. I have always had an interest in creative fields and have enjoyed drawing and art. Growing up with family members who are involved in the building industry, I believe my interest in design and architecture has naturally evolved since high school. Highlight(s) of uni so far: Meeting people who have similar interests. Working in a practical hands-on environment and jumping into practical exercises within the first week of classes.Where you hope to be in 10 years’ time: In ten years I hope to have worked within the design industry both locally and internationally. I would love to travel and work overseas for a few years to experience a different lifestyle and culture. Wherever this degree leads me, whether it be interior design, architecture or both, I hope that I have had the opportunity to work with local Tasmanian designers and creatives. Parent who works at Fairbrother: Peter Adams (Northern Construction). My Dad’s job involves pricing and managing costs for builds. As well as his job as a quantity surveyor, Dad also manages projects and spends time visiting sites following the progression and works on site.
