Battling in the South• Kings Mountain: October 7, 1780: 900 frontier

fighters (mostly backwoods moonshiners) defeated British and Loyalist forces.

Dec. 1780: Nathanael Greene (commander of Continental Army in the South) split the army in two. Greene led 1,200 to the east while Daniel Morgan was chosen to lead the 800 men in the west.• Morgan used smart military tactics to defeat the British at

the Battle of Cowpens.

Benedict Arnold had been a beloved General and leader for the Continental Army.Arnold believed that he was worthy enough and deserved to be promoted to a better position in the army but time and time again he was overlooked by Congress.

The Final BattleBritish General Cornwallis moved his army

to Yorktown (located on the Chesapeake Bay.

Cornwallis believed the British Navy would reinforce his position in the bay.

British Navy never arrived; French chased off the British ships.

Meanwhile, Washington and his men pushed into VA and trapped Cornwallis.

3 weeks Cornwallis stalled before finally surrendering.

British troops were forced to march between French and American soldiers as they relinquished their weapons.
